Challenge 1: Hollywood, Here We Come
The premiere episode of HGTV Design Star just finished, so I have to know, did you love it? The final designer has been added to the mix and the first competitor was sent packing.
Spoiler Alert! If you don’t want to know what happened, please don’t click through.
The episode begins with the question I left you with on Friday. Which of the three semi-finalists would make it in: Alyssa, Gary or Torie? The original 10 finalists were given the opportunity to vote in their last competitor, and Torie, the custom home designer and Texas beauty queen, won!

Of course, that was just the beginning of the night. Host Clive Pearse gave the designers their first challenge: to make over their Hollywood home. This season the designers had 30 hours to complete the makeover and were given the biggest budget in Design Star history: $50,000.
Check out the designs from tonight’s episode and tell me what you think.

The dining room by Dan and Nathan was my favorite design of the night. While it’s an incredibly bold statement, I think it’s just what we want to see on Design Star. Innovative design!

Antonio, Lonni and Amy tackled the large living room and did a great job of breaking the space into different areas. While I was as unsure about the pink ducks as Lonni was, Antonio’s idea paid off in the end. The judges love it and the hot pink ducks added a much-needed splash of color.

Torie and Jany’s bedroom is very pretty, but very predictable. I think the judges are right. While I love blue and brown together, we’ve seen it a hundred times.

Jason and Jen’s room makes me smile. While the design may not be entirely cohesive, the faux taxidermy and typography are fun trends, and the whole room has an atmosphere of creativity.

NataLee and Tashica definitely bit off more than they could chew in this bedroom. The color palette is bold, several of their ideas were glamorous, but they weren’t able to finish the look.
Ultimately, the judges decided it was NataLee’s time to go due to her seemingly lack of stamina and definite lack of design execution.

Spill it! Do you think the judges made the right choice? Was the NataLee the one who needed to go?

The judges got it wrong! I would have sent Tashica packing …. she is definitely NOT a design star.
No, they were right. She panicked at too many things, she was disorganized and couldn't physically handle the work. She and Tashica were both careless, sloppy and spent a fortune on Nothing. If Tashica doesn't show a tremendous turn around next show, she should be the next to go. Anthony's pink ducks were nice but he was abrasive and a real bully!
I totally disagree NataLee does not have the overall endurance necessary for Design Star, the judges were right!
I see a lot a haters for Tashnica. She had the physical and mental capacity to continue. Natlee is probably a good designer but you need stamina. Amy S. and Lori dont be a haters. You both were probably rejected for the show. Jason and Jen taxidermy on the wall was awful. The winner of the challenge was obvious. Adeiye you dont base a show on breaking a bottle of wine. Its called design star. No one need to go to your facebook page for more stupid comments.
I agree too.
I think Tashica was a little bossy and she seemed very suspicious but if NataLee couldnt stand the heat I think, duh!, she should have been eliminated. You dont want her fainting in the middle of her show!
I am with you! Tashica needs to go home! She is absolutely NOT a design star. Twice now……when will she go?
I agree with you Amy S
Definitely NataLee needed to go…who broke the wine bottle in the showing of the next episode tho? Was it Tashica? If so, she needs to be the next to go!
I would have liked to see Natalee have another chance. I have already picked the ones I want off due to personality, but who knows they may end up being good. I didn't like Jason and Jen's room at all and even though I agreed with the judges about NataLee and Tashica's room, it was still a fun room.
definitely! I think NataLee was a weak link that needed to go. She can't handle the competition.
Well, I at first didn't think they picked the right person to eliminate, but after some thought,
I saw the judges point. NataLee seemed to be a great designer, but just not cut out for the trials and
tribulations of Design Star. You have to be physically in good shape for something like this. I would love to see some of her designs, though.
Her design style is 90's mormon. Watch her video and look at the design elemetns in her own home. Baaaaadddd.
Will someone please tell me why the bedrooms had multiple beds? I missed the first part of the show. Thanks. Rene'
The house is a 3 bedroom. With 11 designers in a 3 bedroom home, there better be multiple beds! lol
Because there are 11 (well 10 now) people who have to sleep there.
the contestants will be living in this house.
This is the home the designers will be staying at.
I thought the same thing! It looked like girl scout camp to me!
Finally, some REAL JUDGES! I LOVE that they have the best designer in the world that is Candice Olson.
Genevieve is also a great designer, I think this is going to be the best Desingstart so far. Good luck to all of them.
I agree with you about Candice, disagree about Genevieve being a great designer. David Bromstad would've made a great judge!
you guys are right about Candice .. she has an incredible sense of design. I agree with you about David Bromstad making a wonderful judge. He is the best designer of all 3 past seasons.
I agree with you. I don't think Genevieve is an especially good designer. I find her to be both abrasive and obnoxious.
Definitely love to see Candice there – not so with Genevieve; I thought she was sneering and negative. Love the idea of having David B. as a judge – would be great to have the best of the previous DesignStar winners participating; someone who's actually been through the process and knows what it takes.
I total agree! Candice is the best and Genevieve has come a long way since her day's on Trading spaces. I do like David's work! I am looking forward to the next show. I think the judges lend towards Natalee as a choice due to health more then design. It is hard to do all that work in such a short time frame.
Candice is the only one who deserves to be up there judging, her show and her designs are still as fresh as a newborn, Vern is sooo yesterday its pathetic, someone should cancel his show "deservingly so" and after seeing a few of Genevieve's designs and shows, Natalee is just as talented if not even more than "Dear Genevieve"…
Awesome designer Candice! Great designer Vern! Geneiveve, I dont know what happened they could have picked another designer.
Hmmm, hard to say if Natalee was let go too soon. I would have liked to seen more from her. She was weak no doubt. In television having a design show looks to be a very tough industry. So if you can't handle the heat and in this case pressure, you need to get out of the kitchen.
I think the judges got it right. NataLee couldn't even make it through the first episode. She didn't want it badly enough.
