  1. Please get rid of Nina she is not getting along with any one.

Arlene Pellegrino on June 28, 2010 at 8:29 pm
    • I thought her design rocked this week…well, before she drew all that line crapola all over the place. I think Emily was right about the drawing. The judges got it wrong this week. I don't really care whether she can get along with anyone. She just needs to get along with the clients. If she'd drawn that stuff all over my wall, I would have made her remove it at her expense.

      • Seriously.. you liked Nina's design.. ok glad you addded not the scribbles.
Nina think she is so talented, and she is not.. she is only obnoxious.
These were group creations, yet she refused to work in the group.

She has no talent.. and is going to kill the show.. she needs to go!

gypsy on July 1, 2010 at 7:36 pm
    • I can not wait until they get rid of Nina. I hate her scribbling on the wall. If they keep her, it's clear that they are just looking for drama/viewers and don't care about design. If Nina could have ramped up the size of her scribbling and made it more dramatic, it might have looked like something. If not, she should save it for the local arts summer program for elementary kids showing what they can do with a crayon on the wall.

Beth at the Beach on June 29, 2010 at 1:53 am
      • she would be throw out of a gang for graffetti that bad!!
Beth.. I agree completely.. and I really do think they are keeping her ONLY for the drama, and surely the ONLY reason they chose her to win.. to add more drama.. since her creation was THEE worst!

gypsy on July 1, 2010 at 7:38 pm
    • YESSSS!!!!!!! SHES HORRIBLE AND IF I HAD THE OUTDOOR SPACE SHE DID IN THAT AWFUL PINK ITHE FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS REPAINT, AND YES THE SQUIGGLES WERE VERY BAD, NOT CLASSY AT ALL

KRD on June 30, 2010 at 10:52 am
      • it fits her.. she herself is by no means classy.. she is grating! surely someone told her that before and she thought they were saying she is great.

gypsy on July 1, 2010 at 7:39 pm
  2. I would like to see the show get rid of the team projects and do more individual projects. You really can't see what the individuals can do on their own with all of the team issues.

lam on June 28, 2010 at 11:05 pm
    • I think a couple of the individuals came to the forefront this week. And I have to agree with you about the individual competitions. They are always so much better.

      Lillie 8-) on June 29, 2010 at 1:30 am
    • I agree. Boring shows. Nothing inspirational.I just can't look at another season of boring. The first season was the best. Maybe a talent like David doesn't come around every year. Show the viewers what each person's design style would be and quit basing the elimination on hosting abilities. Tthat can probably be learned, but design talent should already be present.

bored silly on July 1, 2010 at 8:04 pm
  3. The format of the show this season is TERRIBLE! The judges are very scripted, Candace is not good, challenges are lame, etc. Feels like it should be the first season – very amaturish. What happened???

emily on June 28, 2010 at 11:19 pm
    • seems like they are more interested in $$$/drama than finding anyone with real design talent.

      Lillie 8-) on June 29, 2010 at 1:29 am
      • Agree completely, the first season was the best. It was about design and art. And there was great work there. Too bad it's not the same show. It was something I looked forward to every Sunday night.

Coral on July 7, 2010 at 1:49 am
    • Mark Burnett, creator of Survivor took over the helm this season. Thus the drama and little to do with design.

Marc on June 29, 2010 at 2:30 am
    • I agree completely. I've been a Design Star fan since the first show, but the changes this year have not done anything to improve the show. The inspirations in group challenges are stupid. Who designs there space around the sound of an instrument, or try to mix pajamas with a wedding gown in one space??? They never should have gotten rid of Clive – he did a lot for the show.

Fake drama, running in and out of stores (what's the point – who expects a quality job to be done in one day?), terrible themes. Not sure if I even want to watch the rest of the season. If you run the show again next year…. PLEASE change it back!!!!

      Crafty_Creature on June 29, 2010 at 3:29 am
      • I agree. Could Vern, Candace and Genevieve do better given these time constraints? I think they should make the judges do the challenges also- in the same allotted time and see if they could do better-maybe show their designs in a clip and explain why their design worked so well to maybe teach these green designers how they could have done better. Candace could do it but I'm not sure about the other two! Candace, show your wonderful personality on this show and make it more fun!

Judith on June 29, 2010 at 2:10 pm
      • I'm with all of you. I'm really disappointed in the themes and challenges. I think I'm more disappointed that Vern would go along with it and stay with the show. He's so much better than that…so disappointing.

Coral on July 7, 2010 at 1:41 am
    • I have been watching since first season am so disappointed with the current season. It is terrible. Bring back the individual challenges. Inspire and teach your audience. What do you gain by seeing these designers run through stores and constantly rushing. I don't understand being inspired by a musical instrument! I don't LEARN anything from the judges…they don't inspire me to watch. Vern says the same thing on every episode.

SCepisode on June 29, 2010 at 4:21 pm
      • I TOTALLY agree!! More time is spent on drama and the judges than on design! It is actually a little boring this season. Why can't they just repeat some of the more successful challenges from before? And, PLEASE, more individual challenges showing all phases of the design efforts!!

Rhonda on June 30, 2010 at 1:32 am
    • I feel the same.. it feels like this is the first season period.. like they never did this show before. i did not watch the previous seasons, and if I was not aware there were previous seasons I would have sworn this was brand new and they were still working out the squeaks!

gypsy on July 1, 2010 at 7:40 pm
  4. This year is lacking warmth and humor…AKA….Clive!!! This isn't Survivor (Mark Burnett). Vern is testy, Candace and Genevieve are MIA. And puleeeze….no more challengers about dresses and musical instruments…..design, not accessorize! I used to LOVE this show….no more.

    erinclare72 on June 29, 2010 at 12:51 am
    • amen

      Lillie 8-) on June 29, 2010 at 1:29 am
    • you got that right. and nina needs to go

carol on June 29, 2010 at 4:23 am
    • Vern has become a nazi judge….Sheeshz..!!. It is definitely not enjoyable to watch this season.

  5. How very interesting that I am the 5th commenter. HGTV/Design Star please take note of this fact. Usually there are at least 100 comments. If I were management for HGTV I'd be pretty worried about my job.

SO, really, if Nina did all that wavy drawing/painting on my walls, I'd be really upset. I thought her design rocked BEFORE she put the other crapola up there. Emily was right about the line drawings. The judges got it WRONG.

Was Casey present during this design week? I did not hear her speak or see any part of her design. Seems to me someone else (Kim Myles) skated through the competition being quite and below the radar.

I'm so sick of all this backstabbing. It's like watching politicians. HGTV, you've gone so wrong with this show. You need to get away from the "drama" and back to some real "design" competition.

Why is Nina always picking on Stacey? Can't she just do her design job and shut up?

    Lillie 8-) on June 28, 2010 at 9:26 pm
    • when did she pick on stacey?

DDedittor on June 29, 2010 at 4:07 am
      • When Emily criticized her wall squiggles Nina responded by criticizing Stacey's design.

CplusE on June 29, 2010 at 5:08 pm
        • I didnt see Nina picking on anyone, I saw Emily at the end of the cahllenge decide to say something negative to Nina about her piece and then run in the other room to hide and whine. I saw Nina respond by saying somethgn like "I think Stacey's wall is boring and the table and bencjed architecturally unproportioned but we all have our moment in this room and I am not picking on your elements so don't pick on mine.

I don't know where you saw it as a Stacey dig.

MIKE on June 29, 2010 at 5:49 pm
  6. HATE the new format! I was disappointed that Clive was gone, but still willing to watch for a few episondes. However, now I'm finished with it – Design Star IS NOT Celebrity Apprentice. I think the format is stifling the designers and makes it uninteresting to watch. I won't be watching any more this season

karen on June 29, 2010 at 1:29 am
    • I agree. I thought this show was about design, not politics. It was supposed to showcase the designers' style and abilities–not how they can backstab their competition. Also, why don't we get to hear the judges' comments, like on Project Runway. We truly have no idea what they like and dislike about the designs, or why one is the winner and another is in the bottom two. I really don't care, at this point, who wins. I won't watch the show they get anyway. And I'm done with this season!

barkberry on June 29, 2010 at 8:44 pm
  7. Okay, I will be the first to admit that though I'm not completely loving the show's format, it's alright. I mean, its not THAT bad people. Look at this realistically people. Clive is missing, I love him and miss him but overall this show is about design, and Clive was a great host but focus on the bulk of the show people! We are so blinded by all these little things and excess crap that we don't realize hey, these designers have got some talent, the format is bearable and the drama is decreasing. Remember design star junkies, there is only drama when the contestants produce it. I did once think that this show as all drama and terrible and blah blah blah, but it's not that bad. It's true that they should focus on them designing more but hey, there getting there. Babies need to mature.
Anyway, I thought this episode was okay – they should have more individual challenges. Poor Trent! The second I heard him say, "I'm taking the backseat for now," I thought, You're out! NEVER take the backseat! They're looking for stars, not followers. Though I hate her drama queen attitude, Nina did deserve to win. Also the Ladies + Dan executed their space well. The guys room was so cluttered and horrible! I'm no expert but I can tell that THAT room was bad. I really hope they stop having inspirational challenges, shake things up, you know? Still liking the show.
So people I know I sound the the producer's pet but let's stop using the blog to complain about little things about the show or exaggerate (as I once did), and let's talk about the design star show! That's why it's a design star blog…right?

Carol Hannah in Cali on June 29, 2010 at 1:33 am
    • I would agree with a lot of what you said…but we've been watching 5 seasons of this show and its' not in its infancy. It should be at the top of its game but this season is completely different than the other seasons. The only change is who's producing it and the story editors. Its hard to watch and enjoy the show as you said when there is so much negativity going on screen, the coldness of the judges and actually the lack of interaction between the judges. Maybe its edited out…but all I see is Vern ripping on people and being nasty. It seems like its trying to follow the Project Runway manual…but its not being done right. At least with PR they had Tim Gunn to lighten the mood. Clive is out…and he should be thankful he got off this sinking ship in time.

Alex on June 29, 2010 at 2:39 am
      • With the new production team the show is once again in infancy. If the Burnett crew is paying any attention and I am sure they are there will be some big changes next season.

Henry Cloud on June 29, 2010 at 4:11 pm
    • Kinda sad. This is the most positive comment I've read, and all you can muster is "It's not that bad"?

billyjobobb on July 1, 2010 at 12:57 am
    • You guys! Though I'm not in love with the show, she has a point. Look down at the blog and all you see is complaints. What she is trying to say is that the show is not as a bad as everyone thinks and lets start talkin' DESIGN on this DESIGNSTAR blog! I'm pretty tired of only seeing complaints, too.

Dory Connors on July 1, 2010 at 5:49 pm
  8. Where is Clive? Vern bores me. I would rather Candice do the talking. This season seems alittle short on talent. Get to the real decorating!!!!!!!

Audra on June 29, 2010 at 2:11 am
  9. Does anyone else agree with me that they should change the title of this show to, "Vern announces his newest Design Star – Nina"? They can just do completely away with all the challenges, other contestants, other judges, and just start taping Nina's new show right away!! I think we can all see the writing on the uh, wall so to speak. Boooring!!

David on June 29, 2010 at 2:31 am
    • I personally think that they are keeping the very nasty Nina around to contrast what a likable person Emily is. We see very little of anyone else. This years show is ugly at best. The challenges are ridiculous and the designers are weak and unappealing to watch. I don't want to watch arguing, backstabbing, and massive egos.

Elaine on June 29, 2010 at 5:20 pm
    • good call… gotta wonder if Vern & Nina have something going on.. because seriously Nina does not have talent, she thinks she can paint.. and all she does is attack others. Pathetic!

gypsy on July 1, 2010 at 7:45 pm
  10. While they were changing the format why didn't they change the name to one that more accurately reflects what HGTV has turned this program into — Design Apprentice?
