This Sunday starting at 9/8c, tune in for the Design Star marathon. Watch all the designs and drama of the first three episodes again, and in honor of the long weekend, we have a poll for you.
Chelsey Bowen is a Decorating Editor for HGTV.com. She is a lover of style, whether found in well-designed rooms or the latest fashion runways. Her obsessions include magazines, cooking, estate sales and her puppy, Baxter..
I am agreeing with some of these commenters. This year DesignStar is a waste of my time. I am sorry to say that being a follower since the start.
Sorry, but the constant camera contests to me say that they don't have anything else to do.
I miss the other judges. I felt a kooky as they may have appeared, they actually said something. Gen and Candice just sit there and let Vern dictate. And Vern, your a bit mean.
This year it is bad formual. Not really interesting, and no real talent.
LaLa on July 3, 2010 at 2:57 pm
Right on again! Vern was very mean. I don't think the show is anything like other years.
I have no interest in it at all this year.

What does it say about programming when the BEST Shows you can offer are old re runs during non prime time! If you are squezing the blood out of the buffalo, so to speak. At least run some of the older show re reuns in prime time. (I'm sure Mike Holmes is an OK person, but I've had enough of him) and just for the record, I can't wait for this turkey of a season of DS5 to be over.

I think a few of those are still around, but they're usually always repeats like most everything else on HGTV is.
I'd like to know whatever happened to:
Kenneth Brown and his reDesign
Designer challenge
Those two goof balls Sheri and Matt?
The Kitty with the "skunk do" show?
That Joanie show (Decorating Cents?) that would show us trash to treasures at the end of her show.

Oh and Homes Across America, regardless if the host was the older lady or Joe.
Mark on July 3, 2010 at 5:36 pm
YES!!! THANK YOU! ENOUGH OF HOLMES ON HOMES ALREADY! WHERE IN THE WORLD DID YOU GET THE IDEA THAT WE WANT TO SEE HIM ALL THE TIME!!! STOP IT!
I used to wake up early on weekends in the summer to watch the landscaping shows.
Thanks. Now I sleep in.

This show has great potential but is very frustrating because the producers seem more interested in soap opera than in design. We want (1) more time spent making clear what each designer has done, and (2) more time on critique, and on justifying the judges' decisions, which seem to be almost completely random. Is the point of the show simply to be the most aggressive person whose design is most dominant? It seems like that. But that's how you actually pick a good designer or good TV show host.
The show would be much better if you adhered more closely to the Project Runway model and actually made it about design.

I have to agree, Design Star hasn’t been up to par this season but I don’t think it’s the designers- I believe it’s the new format. We need Clive back as the host! Where it used to be a fun show to watch, it now comes across as elitest and annoying. I used to love Vern and Genevieve but I’m leaning towards strong dislike the more I watch. They cannot both judge and host, they come across as mean and nasty- and that’s not fin to watch.
I like several of the designers- Emily, Courtland, Tom. But the show is grating and too negative. We need a little Clive love.
Lori on July 3, 2010 at 10:32 pm
Oops, that should say fun, not fin. Gotta love iPod typing.
Lori on July 3, 2010 at 10:36 pm
If each designer was allowed to show his or her own design without being part of a team, it would be much more interesting. Their creativity is stifled by stronger personalities.
Also…I'm really getting sick of the same old line up every evening: House Hunters, My First Home, etc. Let's get some more home improvement shows on at night like Yard Crashers, House Crashers, etc.

Glad that others are feeling the same way I am about the decline of HGTV…used to DVR it all the time…now not so much. So sick of all the variations of House Hunters…totally boring. Where's Gardening by the Yard with the Paul guy?
Nancy2 on July 4, 2010 at 3:35 am
I'm w/you! Where is Gardening by the Yard? I never missed an episode. I learned so many things that I actually applied. This season is a bust! While we're at it, what happened to the past winners of DS? Did Antonio actually get a show (or did I miss it…wait, I couldn't have. I'm sure I'd have seen the reruns by now! What happened to Kim (Myles of Styles)? She seems to have just disappeared into one of here many [weird] designs. Maybe DS should not promise the winners a full show. Instead, give them a few shows and move on instead of leaving us to wonder…WHAT HAPPENED TO…?

Design Star Rewatch?! Uhg! It was painful enough the first time-do you honestly think I hate myself enough to watch it all again?!
I am with many of you-I miss Decorating Cents (trash to treasure-major inspiration). I want decorating ideas, not crazy personality conflicts.
Gin on July 4, 2010 at 5:47 am
i so agree with that. Decorating Cents was definitly inspiring and it made me look at my home in a different way, more like an ongoing project than a finished one. in the other seasons of Design Star there were alot of good ideas and solutions but this season……….BLECH!

I'm glad to see so many comments that echo the way I have been feeling about Design Star, and HGTV, in general. HGTV has been my favorite channel, but this season of Design Star has been such a dissappointment. I don't want to see people fighting with each other. It seems that the producers have gone out of their way to edit simply to show tension and disagreement. If you show the contestants as disagreeable, then who is going to want to watch them on a show? And there is no "design"; the themes and results have been awful. I have no idea who CAN desing a good room, given the nebulous themes and mis-matched group results. Overall, pretty awful this year.
I hope someone there is reading all these comments.
And ditto more design show, especially in the evening. I loathe HouseHunters.
