Episode 8 Roundup

After enjoying some of Aarón Sanchez’s cuisine, the designers are then challenged to design rooms inspired by the dishes they ate. But there’s a catch – they must redesign a room using only the existing furniture and materials!

Come back each week for Heather, David and the rest of the designers as we get closer to crowning the next Design Star.

  1. I frankly haven't seen much talent on this season of Design Star, nothing like I saw last season.

Sharon Heiser on August 9, 2010 at 3:46 pm
    • I agree!!! The talent definitely is not as good as previous years; I haven't missed any year or any episode. Also, the judges do not allow the viewers to hear what they have to say when they deliberate, like in previous years. They seem a bit matter-of-fact this year, which is not inviting and it turns me off.

Theresa on August 9, 2010 at 10:03 pm
    • Agreed. The talent this year has been way below past seasons. I also hate the format: "OK, here's another TEAM event where you must get your inspiration from a bowl of fruit or a tamale"!?! Seriously?! This has been a ridiculous season on all accounts. No one really got to do anything that remotely resembled their individual talents. Also, I may have missed this, but Where is Clive? Vern Yip is good Designer but an awful Spokesperson! Probably won't watch next season if it is like this one again.

Michael is not a talented Designer or potential host. Please Judges, "send him home"!!!

DJenx on August 10, 2010 at 2:53 pm
    • No talent this year!!!!! A teeneager could do this cheesy decorating. I hate the teams. I want to see individual style. I do not like the new format of the show and all the silly inspiration pieces. I barely watch this season. They all suck. AND when they did the trump towers OMG what kinda crap was that, lOOked more like a HOTEL 6…..PITIFUL…..SHOW WILL NOT LAST MUCH LONGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guest on August 10, 2010 at 4:56 pm
    • I agree. Where did they find these people? I thought Courtland was probably the best and now he's gone. What were they thinking. Maybe just looking for a particular audience I guess. Not much to watch now. What a mess these projects have been.

madeee on August 11, 2010 at 1:47 am
    • I totally agree. This year has some of the worst candidates I have seen. I think part of the problem this year is that the challenges are lame. What happened to these designers doing their own rooms either in a location or in the studio. I can tell much from the challenges presented. Designing from a flower, a food, and whatever else. Please. The Judges are three very talented designers and their time and talent is wasted on judging these lame challenges. Need to improve the challenges and pick better candidates.

marlenestabin on August 11, 2010 at 8:23 am
    • i agree but we really havent seen much of their work alone. what happened to previous years when alot of the work was done alone in those blank spaces. hard to bring out your point of view whjen they opposite and if you want the design to work your skills might not get in so design will work. dont see several people doing 1 half hour show with 3 other designers. aw for the previous years when was actually entertaining

angelelly on August 11, 2010 at 8:54 am
    • All I can say is – REALLY – food to design by? I mean, it is not the design stars, it is the absolutely stupid things they are given as "inspiration"!!!! Just WHO is coming up with these totally bazaar ideas? How much "inspiration" can one truly get from a fruit salad? I mean, look at the colors in a fruit salad – can anyone say "Crayola primary colors"? This season, it is truly not the fault of the design stars in competition. Think this might be my last season to watch.

Brenda on August 11, 2010 at 1:08 pm
    • I agree with everyone, no talent and boring foremat. I'm sure they have heard the expression "jump the shark" —–

starlaneely on August 11, 2010 at 2:24 pm
    • I agree Totally. Its should be individuals one on one like the other seasons. Not groups.

bayougatorlgirlie on August 11, 2010 at 9:26 pm
    • I agree. I cannot believe that these people are designers. If the called the show un-talented design stars it would be closer to the truth. Did you see the stuff that Michael did? A coffee table with a cloth over it and a mirror with wings glued on. Please. None of these people deserves a show. My wife and I follow Design Star every year and this is the least talented group ever. Sorry guys but thats the truth.

scoop on August 12, 2010 at 10:56 pm
  2. I cannot understand what they see in Michael's work or his personality. I agree with Sharon, this year has been a disappointment.

Sue Mills on August 9, 2010 at 4:11 pm
    • I AGREE WITH YOU AND SHARON! THIS HAS BEEN THE WORST YEAR ! I WILL NOT WATCH EMILY OR MICHAEL ! NEITHER ONE OF THESE PEOPLE HAVE THE STAR QUALITIES THAT ALREADY EXIST IN THE DESIGNERS THAT ARE ON HGTV PRESENTLY! I ALSO AGREE WITH CAROLE WHO MENTIONED WE NEED TO SEE INDIVIDUAL STYLE WAY BEFORE NOW! JUST NOT A GREAT SELECTION FOR THIS YEARS COMPITION!!

BOOK COLLECTOR on August 16, 2010 at 2:50 pm
    • I completely agree with Sue. Micheal created a great mirror and I"ll give him that but I haven't seen very much else that makes him a "design star". The MOST disappointing thing about Micheal is his superficial personality. After the way he spoke on camera about his fellow competitor, I could NEVER EVER watch his show.

Tanya on August 16, 2010 at 7:03 pm
  3. When are we going to see individual designs … instead of a boring season of all teamwork! GAG!

carole on August 9, 2010 at 4:23 pm
  4. Courtland should not have gone home. He was the only one who could effectively host a show, that I would watch anyway. He didn't get the chef's name correct but, he still did the best job hosting. The others were simply awful. I will no longer watch this season. Also, maybe next season they will select a more talented group and do more individual challenges.

Toni on August 9, 2010 at 4:24 pm
    • couldn't agree with you more! couldn't believe when he was kicked off last night. And Michael is so nasty and backstabbing. Didn't they learn anything after they picked Antonio last season? His show hasn't seemed to take off and he has a lousy personality.

Opgal on August 9, 2010 at 9:12 pm
    • The only thing Courtland can do is paint and we already have color splash.. Besides. Faux painting is so out. Wallpaper is in….. Lets have a show about that… And you all are right this season really stinks.. its like they all just got out of school.. I would like to see some reall design work not this cheap ikea looking crap they are always doing plus real designers dot do all the work they just design. This show needs an over hall and get rid of vern already.

Mike on August 10, 2010 at 10:36 am
    • I am very disappointed that Courtland was eliminated. I am also very disturbed that although all
designers are told they need to be agrgessive, and project their ideas and designs , Candice and Genevieve allow Vern run the panel and speak for both of them in giving the designers the design challenge results. Very lame ! I am done with not only this show but all of the three judges shows.
I think this season brought out i the flaws in the character and decision making of the judges, more then the flaws of the design contestants.

Alice on August 10, 2010 at 1:41 pm
    • Toni you are so on it… Michael has not won any challange yet he stays and Courtland is gone. Makes me not want to watch anymore This was absolutley a bad call!!!!!!!!!!

Bonnie on August 15, 2010 at 6:18 pm
    • This is a real disappointment. Courtland was the most talented of the three – it seemed to easy for the judges to eliminate him. And if given a real chance for individual creativity, he would have shown what he could do. Hopefully this will change next year!

Webladty on August 15, 2010 at 11:47 pm
  5. I agree with everyone this season is disappointing, nothing exciting just ho-hum, I don't think any of them deserve their own show. Could the judges actually say???

Edithe on August 9, 2010 at 4:31 pm
    • I second that!

Bayougatorgirlie on August 11, 2010 at 9:27 pm
  6. When I first saw that lady painting fake flowers, I immediately thought that she would be the one eliminated, her rectangular white box surrounded with fake flower (the chandelier) was horrible in my opinion, I never thought that my Courtland would the one, very disappointing.
Not that this lady does not know how to design, but this was not her best at all.

eddy on August 9, 2010 at 4:36 pm
    • This is something cheesy you would expect to see on Design on a Dime, which thankfully is no longer on.

imaboomer on August 10, 2010 at 1:55 pm
    • I agree Eddy. That flower thing was a real joke. Can you imagine having a designer hang that junk in your home? It was good for one thing…a laugh. But the judges loved it., what does that say about them?

vmccallister on August 12, 2010 at 11:00 pm
      • What it says is that the judges are OUT OF TOUCH with reality!!! If that was put in my space by a designer I would take it down right in front of them, I can tell you that. It was just tacky. My favorite two contestants, Alex and Courtland, have both been eliminated – waaaaaaaahhh. So now I really don't give a fig who wins, I most likely won't watch. I can guarantee that I will NOT watch if Michael wins.

Michelle on August 13, 2010 at 5:50 pm
  7. I haven't been participating in the blog so far—but wanted to tell HGTV that the whole cutthroat tone of your "judges" is so sad to me. All three of your hosts on their previous HGTV programs were warm, generous, loving—here they're fascist cold beasts! What a disappointment to take warmth and martialize it with iciness!

Christine Williams on August 9, 2010 at 4:40 pm
    • I seem to remember an old episode of Trading Spaces in which Genevieve covered a wall in moss! How does she have the nerve to criticize anyone else's design after that???

Former HGTV fan on August 13, 2010 at 9:31 pm
  8. This years design star has been just so frustrating. An entire season of ridiculous "inspirations" and group rooms has me stunned. Then finally it comes down to four and the only host I think anyone would want to watch is sent home. What are you thinking?

    Lynnette

Lynnette Covell on August 9, 2010 at 4:44 pm
    • Totally agree. Court had this contest won from day one. Judges are afraid of him, Girl!

      Sad X D-Star Fan on August 9, 2010 at 6:35 pm
      • Amen!

Martha on August 9, 2010 at 8:32 pm
        • They must not have thought he was a bombshell.

Jillian on August 10, 2010 at 1:22 am
    • I totaly argree. I don't think that Courtland should have gone home, same with Alex. Also, I think that there needs to be more individual challenges to see what the designers can do with an entire room by themselves, not just a part of a room. I don't think that I will be watching this season anymore :(

Lydia on August 11, 2010 at 11:51 am
    • I agree Courtland was the only one that could have had a show that was watchable. The last 3 will never win me as a viewer.

vmccallister on August 12, 2010 at 11:01 pm
    • I so agree with the "ridiculous inspirations" comment. I am soooo not enjoying this season. I am currently watching a rerun of last season to remind myself why I liked the show to begin with. Only thing wrong with last season (in my opinion) was the choice of Antonio as 'winner'.

Mingo on August 13, 2010 at 10:53 pm
  9. I agree, especially Vern, he is just plain nasty this time. None of these designers have any talent, the only one I probably would have tried would be Courtland. Michael…yuck WAY too flamboyant, gag. I thinkk Casey will win after Candice's comment that she's the one to attract more men to HGTV.

MMM on August 9, 2010 at 4:47 pm
    • What is really funny about that comment from Candice is that my husband does not watch HGTV. At all. Ever. Any program. At all. The ONLY thing he has ever watched is design star. If anything else HGTV is on, he will leave the room. He said that he is disappointed in design star this year because the only two contestants he would have watched were sent home. Courtland and Alex. He doesn't think any of the remaining three have any personality or talent worth watching on tv.

Michelle on August 13, 2010 at 5:54 pm
  10. help!! bring back clive and the old format this year is bad and not creative at all I will not watch next season if it is like this as i learned nothing new and would not let any of these do my home
