  1. Who Cares!

dpisme on August 27, 2010 at 10:17 pm
    • You have got to be kidding me! Emily is the only designer on the show who will bring in the "Domino" reading crowd. She has such an organic design sense and is totally going to bring up the level of design and viewership on HGTV. I think HGTV is going to be surprised with who tunes in to that show, a wealthier, more design savvy group, because she could really crossover into a whole new demographic, as well as surprise the old HGTV demographic with how much they love her style. I think HGTV should promote this show on other channels because this could be a huge hit for them. Just the preview for the show caught me and had me looking forward so much. Kudos to them for taking the channel up a level!!

      • HGTV is in the dumpster. Since they would much rather be the Real Estate channel, they don't care what non-talent zeros, as excuses for designers, that they inflict upon the viewing audience (much diminished, as it is. They're not bragging about ratings this year!). Emily seems to be able to fill any room with a pile of garbage and call it design. What higher demographic is going to love that?

dpisme on August 29, 2010 at 2:36 pm
    • I like Emily and I like her design, although she had some really bad designs at the beginning, I don't know whats up with that. Anyway I will be watching her show tonight, I'm just glad HGTV has a new DESIGN show can't be more tired of House Hunter shows, I wont even watch those shows! HEY HGTV IF YOUR LISTENING WE WANT MORE DESIGN SHOWS PLEASE!

    • I am very excited to watch Emily on her new show Secrets from a Stylist because Emily is "real". She is incredibly creative, her design style is accessible, thought provoking, and fun. I love her because she thinks like an artist (although she says she can't actually draw or paint) and her rooms do not look "designed" or boring. I am a thrift store junkie and I love that she mixes her finds with upscale pieces. I totally get her and can't wait to see more of work. I only hope that she remains true to herself because that is what makes her style and her presentations so enjoyable.
P.S. Her blog, The Brass Petal is WONDERFUL.

Lindsey on August 30, 2010 at 6:09 pm
    • I agree, the judges definitely missed again this year.

      lv.girl on September 1, 2010 at 6:04 pm
    • I agree. If Emily were alone in a room, she'd go unnoticed. She can't even style herself in an updated fashion, let alone offer creative designs to shut ins….

      B-Girl on September 2, 2010 at 11:41 am
    • Hey Emily, Watch the up-speak. It gets annoying quickly!!

Sal on September 4, 2010 at 9:02 pm
    • Why hasn't there been more episodes of this show ? I had to google to find out whats going on….will be very disappointed if this is it :( Like with any new show, this too have a few rough edges which I'm sure the producers should be able to smooth en out. But I would really like to see what else Emily has to share.

Abb on September 12, 2010 at 10:49 pm
  2. What a disappointment – the whole season of this Design Star. Emily should have been eliminated on the first episode. if she is a "designer" then 3/4 of the women in this country are as well. I think she must be related to someone connected to the show, the network?? Judges, while talented, appeared stiff and uncomfortable. Their comments about great design were so off – there was no great design this year. Am I mistaken, but didn't the audience vote in previous years to determine the winner from the final two? If this had been the case this year, no Emily!

bunny on August 27, 2010 at 10:38 pm
    • You are right!! Watched her first show — I couldn't even understand half of her comments. she talked so fast and with that rising question in her voice. I think HG needs some new judges for design star — what a disappointment!!!!

Gretel on August 30, 2010 at 9:36 pm
      • Do you normally criticize things?

Ree on September 12, 2010 at 6:44 pm
    • Bunny, by the "VOTES" (thumbs up or down) on your comment…it looks like Emily would have still had a likely shot at the title! Just sayin…

Ree on September 12, 2010 at 6:54 pm
    • Emily is awesome. Give the girl a chance! Seeing how sucessful the three judges are in their lives….. I am sure they know more about a potential designer than any of us.

Lmprocessor on September 14, 2010 at 12:13 am
  3. emily designs… what? plastic flowers glued to a box? spray-painted bottles?

c'mon, design star – bring clive pearse back, and go back to one designer and two nons – we would like to see real, i mean REAL, designs – never liked genevieve even on trading spaces

but i don't think it's too much to ask, no beg, for a "real" person's judgement-call on what's good

one designer per three votes – and let us americans (read "payers of design fees") decide who's the best

    oh – one more thing

individual rooms/spaces FIRST – i mean really, who is gonna vote for a team when the designer they hate the most is in it?

René Wynn Dulaney on August 28, 2010 at 12:01 am
    • OK, I thoroughly agree with you. Emily is just a fake!! I disliked her from the first show, cannot believe she won. What design talent? she sat around doing nothing, pretended to like the other contestants then dissed them . It was just lucky she always seemed to be on the team that was winning. Talk about psyched, all the judges out! Don't they look at the camera background reviews?

Sally Bee on September 28, 2010 at 6:02 pm
  4. I have to agree with Rene's comments. This year's designs were, for the most part, so…ho hum. Real yawners. I really disliked the inspiration elements, e.g. clothing, flowers, etc.. Pretty lame. Who in their home wants a room design inspired by an outfit or flower? Let's get real. It's all about mood and feelings – emotional ambiance. Next time base designs on personality, mood, purpose. That's what people really want.
I think Vern was a bully at times.( BTW, I was never impressed with his designs from the Deserving Design days.) It's like, who is he to criticize? It's so cliche' – as in repetitious, oh geeze, not again – like other reality shows. Why does there have to be a 'heavy'? I'm tired of that crap. Let's turn it into a real discussion on why an element worked or didn't. Certainly that would be so much more helpful and informative.

Kit on August 28, 2010 at 1:01 pm
    • I think Vern was a bully and rude too, until the last two shows. Let the designers design from the beginning not make the show so much live Survivor. Pretty lame to make a room full of mostly junk into something great.
Emily is so charming. I think she will surprise all you doubting complainers .

Mary on August 29, 2010 at 8:32 pm
    • I agree, i thought all of the designs this year were not only ho hum, but down right boring. As for the final choice, she has no personality. Her voice is so annoying i couldn't even finish watching the episode. I always and mean always fast forward during the commercials, but with this design star i couldn't wait for the commercials. As i said, her voice is annoying, it reminds me of Snoopy, when he was trying to talk. He actually sounded better. Also, she doesn't stop to breathe. It was all so boring

Helen on August 30, 2010 at 2:04 am
      • Watching her first episode — I could hardly stand to listen to an hour of that whiny, question mark voice. She talks way too fast……

Gredela on August 30, 2010 at 9:40 pm
    • I think the format this season involved reducing the budget by having more group projects, and in order to inject an individual element into the group design they came up with the contestants choosing a particular object as an inspiration. I agree it was annoying, but they saved a lot of money in not having to supply as many individual spaces and obviously saved on supplies as well. Also, I noticed that all episodes were shot in the NYC area — no traveling as in the past. Also, eliminating Clive saved a salary as well, though I don't know if that was the motive. He's California-based and perhaps did not want to spend that much time in NYC.

Moonbeam on September 5, 2010 at 3:24 am
    • Vern is a bully…but you are not?

Ree on September 12, 2010 at 6:46 pm
    • Yep, that's what galls about Vern. His designs are dishwater dull, and turns out he is to. Hearing him talk about his designs for that New York HGTV apartment almost made me suicidal. How do these people get where they are? He's lacking talent and charm and yet…

casey on November 13, 2010 at 5:11 pm
  5. I'd love to see Mike Holmes judge on design star…I can only imagine what he'd say

Amanda on August 28, 2010 at 8:02 pm

BoredwithDS on September 3, 2010 at 4:16 pm
  6. Sour grapes. Emily is exactly what this network needs. She isn't a stuffy host with cliched designs, or someone who paints a wall bright orange just because it pops on TV. She is young and relatable, and her style on so on trend right now I'm shocked that its on the network. Smart move HGTV, you must be aware of the mood outside this bitter comment site. If these people would actually explore the design world outside cheesy shows, they'd see that Emily is on the cutting edge. Congrats Girl! The Blogger World Loves You!

sam on August 29, 2010 at 12:43 pm
    • Emily is cutting edge? She couldn't cut soft butter with a Ginsu knife! Her "style" is clutter.

dpisme on August 29, 2010 at 1:38 pm
    • Bravo Sam, I was just thinking the same thing. Emily is very different from all of the other designers and she is just what HGTV needed. She is more down to earth than many of the others. She has great ideas on how to pull out what a client wants. She has also given me tons of ideas that I think even a clutz like me can pull off. Although I said bravo Sam, I think the bravo goes to HGTV. I can't wait for more of her shows.

Fran on August 30, 2010 at 1:40 am
    • I am an avid HGTV watcher and I must say that Emily's premier show was so very unique. The hour show flew by – I was that entertained. When do you ever see a designer design 4 rooms in 1 show and redo 1 of those room 3 times. Can't wait for the next show.

sassy on August 31, 2010 at 1:55 pm
      • I completely agree. Though I thought the entire season of Design Star was less than spectacular, we never really got a chance to see the designers individual styles or talents, Emily was the exact right choice for her own show. I thoroughly enjoyed her show. I found it entertaining, informative and unique. I really, really loved it…so congrats to Emily!

Sherri on September 1, 2010 at 2:16 pm
    • As an interior decorator myself, I have to say that I enjoyed this show a great deal — and actually learned a few things. The process she went through to build the room is more authentic than the usual TV process. Good job, Emily. Look forward to the next show.

      Barbara D.C. on August 31, 2010 at 4:56 pm
    • I can't agree more! I take inspiration from many of the designers on the show but Emily gives us spaces that we can live in and call our own. Her formula for determining our individual style allows her to design a room that is all 'US'. The 'undecorated' room that is just put together to reflect the person who lives there. Come to my house!!

pam on September 4, 2010 at 9:23 pm
    • Emily is indeed unique and fresh. Loved her first show and was so glad it was a whole hour. I learned so much by watching her layer the room by using three differene design styles of her client. Some people have accused her of being cluttered, but when she designed for Tom's clothing style during the last design star challenge, she was not at all cluttered. She hit his style perfectly — and his style involved a tailored, clean-line, classic look. My style is a more cluttered, cottage style, and I enjoy that she can do that as well. I hate boring rooms, and hers are never boring. Just because she is good at accessoring does not mean she is cluttered. Her rooms are just interesting with many great things to focus on. Love this show and hope it continues. Will be one of the highlights of my week.

Moonbeam on September 5, 2010 at 3:31 am
    • Emily is the only decorator or designer I've seen on HGTV who I would let touch anything in my home! Her show was the best for seeing how the design process works. And she didn't create a room full of stuff from Pottery Barn or ZGallerie.

Nona on September 6, 2010 at 8:38 pm
    • How does one just comment on this? Anyway I agree with you Emily is superb. I was really suprised at the quality of her design skills and LOVED LOVED LOVED the premiere! Can't wait to see more of her. I am also digging Antonio's show – he is wonderful and his team is great – it's fun, it's different, it's young, it's personal and touching to see all that testosterone design!

LuvEmilyAntonio on September 11, 2010 at 10:48 pm
    • YES!!! THANK YOU SAM!!! I agree completely and couldn't have said it better myself! Emily has such a sophisticated eye and brings a wonderful sense of humor to her work. Her style is unique while still being classy. Her ecletic taste is pulled off excellently…and c'mon on…her personality is absolutely charming! I love her authentic quirky and yet reserved personality. Her blog could not feel more like a conversation. It's like I've known her for years.

Ree on September 12, 2010 at 6:41 pm
    • I agree 100% with you. She is new and cutting edge and not a phony. We do not need another bombshell as others were commenting about. We need someone who people can relate too.

Lmprocessor on September 14, 2010 at 12:15 am
  7. It sure seems funny to me that within one week, Emily already has a prime time special. Makes you wonder…

    CHECKER148 on August 29, 2010 at 12:47 pm
    • Wonder about what? Design Star was shot in June, Emily won in June. HGTV has had almost two months to put the special together.

Rachel on August 29, 2010 at 2:38 pm
    • Yeah…what are you wondering? Do you actually think that Design Star just finished shooting last week? Your comment makes no sense.

anonymous on August 31, 2010 at 1:41 pm
    • I think the idea is that they take advantage of any momentum gained during the Design Star season and they have succeeded. It's being done on other networks too. It's just smart for them to follow with the winner's show – otherwise you lose the audience… And of course just like survivor – this show was taped and won before (I'm guessing?)…

LuvEmilyAntonio on September 11, 2010 at 10:52 pm
  8. Can't wait for Secrets from a Stylist! Emily is innovative, clever and design savvy. Her charisma and talent boosts HGTV up several notches in my book!

Allison on August 29, 2010 at 3:20 pm
    • I truly agree, Allison! As I'm making this comment, I'm watching her premiere. It's definitely fresh and innovative; I think I'm an instant fan!;)

Heather on August 29, 2010 at 10:45 pm
  9. Emily's talent speaks for itself. I can't wait to see her show. As an upper income 30 something New Yorker, her style is exactly what I'm looking for. I waiting to renovate my apartment until after I've seen a couple of her shows, so I can hopefully find some inspiration and use some of her ideas.

  10. you people bashing emily are idiots, she is the hottest thing on tv these days, super cute, petite blonde with georgeous blue eyes. I'd watch any friggin she she hosts, and by the way, i like her design style too.
