David on Episode 2: My Favorite Challenge
Mentor David Bromstad dishes on his favorite Design Star challenge: the white box rooms.
Watch to see why he hates to hear the word “nice.”

The white-box is also my favorite challenge because it dares the designers to be creators and not decorators. Then add in the pressure, time constraint, the unusual supplies and inventiveness required, this challenge would intimidate the best-of-the-best; judges included. I think it’s the furniture that trips a lot of them up. It calls to them to decorate a room. It’s those that create a mood or invoke a feeling that excel.
I loved the show last night, it was my first time watching and I thought it was wonderful. Mark Diaz was the perfect choice for the winner, he did such a great job on camera and with his room. I was very impressed at his work and how comfortable he felt speaking into the camera, made me feel like he was talking to me. Really great show, can not wait to see what happens next.
I also liked marks room. Loved his tribute to his grandfather. Good on camera as well.
Will anyone ever surpass DAVID? He is everything this show was meant to be and his ongoing shows are a WOW almost every time.
I MISS his first crew in SF, especially Danielle.
Keep up the stellar work
Love to HGTV and DAVID,

whatever happened to the ex cheeleader's rubber floor mat that she pulled off the shelf? was it in her room?
She used them on the wall.
Look at photo 39 in episode 2.
Mark's was really cool, very graffiti-inspired – Karl too, using Mondrian to "graffiti" over everything in an otherwise normal room – cool concepts, guys! What happened to the graffiti part of the challenge Meg, J, Cathy – maybe that's why they're in the bottom?
There wasn't a graffiti part of the challenge–just a handful of designers who were inspired by the graffiti on the building.
Yes, but isn't that the point of having at 5-Pointz and not some other venue? Tanika said to use the graffiti as your inspiration.
I just re-watched last night. I remember her saying that the place was inspiring, and used by unconventional artists–I took it to mean a strong hint that they shouldn't go the conventional route–but I missed her saying anything about the graffiti. I guess I'll have to watch again. ;p
If I had to choose a designer I liked the most, it would probably be Kellie. I loved her little nook in episode 1 and I loved the foot prints on the floor in episode 2.
I think Cathy might be my least favorite designer. Her designs are more inside the box thinking, and her camera challenges practically put me to sleep. She really needs to step up her level of energy.
Between the Dresser, the futon and the desk – Iwas hoping for a Chutes and Ladders game. Turn the end tables into dice. Start at one corner and go up the walls and down the other side. How COOL would that be!!!!!
I admired Leslies handling of Cathy in Episode 1, by not getting into an argument with her and just doing what she (Leslie) wanted …letting Cathy's complaining and controlling remarks go in one ear and out the other. I liked her handwriting style on the wall even tho I hate graffiti..but didn't Emily or someone do that in a previous season?
Tyler had the most creative room in my opinion. It wasn't just a mural on the wall, but also an odd furniture concept. Mark was good too…but perhaps as 2nd best.
I agree with EVERYTHING you said. Cathy will hopefully hang herself right out of the show…judging by the show 3 previews, she continues to prove she's not a team player. I loved Tyler's room, too. I thought Mark's was creative and well-executed, but looked to me like a boy's bedroom.
I totally agree with You! Cathy drives me nuts with her constant references to her traveling.. Her inspiration from Barcelona looked very uninspiring. Anyway, I thought the only reason for Tyler not winning this round was, he did not mention his air force grandfather and did not have the hat to match the story… His design was brilliant. Out of box, clever. I liked Mark's, too, I thought it was very good, but I did not like the mixing bowls on the floor, it was too much for me. If it is just the futon/airplane and mural, that would have been bigger effect for me. Tyler's was a project that was done perfectly.
I expected more from Cahty's white box room this week, more color, more creativity I know she has what it takes I love her high style, I think she would make a great TV show host! I loved the brown paper wall that Kevin designed it was super creative – go Kevin! I loved the chair that Tyler designed this was clearly creative and thinking out of the box, yet pratical and usable! I like thinking out of the box, but it has to be practical, user friendly and comfortable with class and style!
David–I'm re-watching right now in a different window, and I just wanted to say, I LOVE the way you coach them in the hosting challenges. Most of them have design training, but not camera training, and what you tell them is absolutely right.
