Emily’s Episode 4 Take: Dear Future Design Stars…

Since she’s “been there, done that,” last season’s winner Emily offers advice to this year’s contestants — including something they should never, ever attempt on the show. Plus, see which designers she’s getting attached to and which she can’t wait to see sent home.
What do you think? Which designs were you most impressed by? Which were you underwhelmed by? Did you think the right designer was sent home? Tell us in the comments below.

I agree with most of what you said and I loved Karl's painting. It was perfect for the room. Bret was definately the one who needed to leave but I'm sick and tired of Cathy. She should be trying out for host of the Home Shopping Network instead of Design Star. Who wants to watch a show about shopping ? She totally cannot get along with anyone she works with and that must scare some of the behind-the-scene employees of HGTV! Thanks for your comments each week.
I completely agree with what you said about Cathy. She acts like she is so good in what she does and never gives anyone she works with a chance to show their design style. Even though her camera challenges, some would argue, have been the "best" out of everyone, you have to be able to work with people. Whenever she goes and shops, she just buys everything for the room without having her teammate(s) look at the furniture. Saying that, I don't like Kevin that much either. Some of his ideas are good, but most of the time he does execute them, and some are just too crazy. Even though he has won last week, he has also been in the bottom 2 twice. Hopefully one of these times he will have to go.
I totally agree about Cathy. She needs to go home.
I agree. Yes Kathy we heard you the first time we know you are a pro get over yourself and get on the bandwagon. I do not understand why the judges do not take her actions into consideration when judging the other designers. She would be a hardship even for Vern!!!!! Love the show.
I absolutely agree with everyone about Cathy. I hope she will not win. I will never watch her show. She is so bossy and cannot get alone with any one on the project. She always says that she is a professional stagier. Well, I got it!! But it is not all about staging it is also about design and personality. Her designs are never impressive and with this personality she should be on some scandal reality show on MTV not HGTV!!! I do not have my favorite person yet. Every week some one else stand out of the crowd but I have to agree that it was fair that Bred left. I like the show and the future stars but PLEASE KICK OUT CATHY FROM THERE, she makes me angry every time I watch the show.
KARL ROCKS and has been rocking it from the beginning…………..I am so scared for him episode 5. Looks like he is paired with Cathy…again. That doesn't seem fair……others haven't had to go a round with her yet. He had to work with her in episode 3 as well. She can suck the life from a corpse and sink the Titanic over and over again. She is some kind of scary. I wish him luck. If he survives her again…..he deserves to win.
I absolutely agree with you about Kathy. I am totally over her and her "shopping" and her unwillingness to finish anything in the room that might "dirty" her hands. I hope at some point the judges see what we have been seeing, that she has no business being on the show!!!
It appears that some of you, including Emily has a hidden agenda when it comes to Cathy. None of you gives her credit for her taste, and design style. Emily, when Cathy does well with her design, you point out her speaking challenge–however, you didn't do that with the others. Sick of Cathy? Why? From what I see, she is 95% correct in her assessment. However, when her partners put their egos in front of the goal, she always comes out in a bad place. What talented people, who doesn't have wisdom, and is self-serving does is get in the way of greatness. Pray for wisdom and you will see and understand true talent–learn from it, then build something great. Emily, you sound aweful as a commentator, stop chewing on your mucus…it's annoying. Sue, look beyond your prejudices and seek the truth about who you are before spilling your hatred. Best wishes, Carol
I got worried when he talked about painting the floor, too. The clients seemed to like the room more than the judges did.
Cathy ruins the show for me each week. I see no talent ex cept trying to intimadate everyone. It make a bad show if all you hear is "We can`t get along" She hasn`t got along with any of her workers the whole season. If I wanted to see a fight I would go watch a cheap boxing match. When she is on now I just flip the channel.
I'm with you regards cathy. She is a real show stopper & I sure don't mean that in a good way.I go to bathroom, before she rolls her eyes (or gives a good impression of her disgust /impatience with everyone around her),I just have to leave the room, she is so condescending, she even looks like she's just putiing up with experts/judges,like she can do so much better.no one wants to see her just shop & spend money, try watching & learning from the other contstants. They have very worthwhile ideas,save/re-purpose But mostly just really act like they want to be there..She really needs to go home, who would want to watch someone bitch &complain, really!
Cathy missed her calling, she should be a personal shopper, not decorator. She obviously only likes to shop, although she doesn't do that too well either. Oh well, will be gland to see her go SOON!
I agree with you. Cathy totally ruins the show every week. She has a bad attitude and only seems to be looking out for herself. Cathy doesn't seem to get along with anyone. Also, why does she keep rolling her eyes and bugging them out so much? Not a good look! Cathy needs to go!
Totally agree! Cathy is nauseating with her know-it-all attitude! I can't believe she is in 2nd in the voting! Her camera skills are what carry her each week and she can shop and usually pull it off. She can't get along with anyone and I wish the judges wouldn't be so critical of everyone that is paired with her for not standing up for their designs. You tell them to work as a team which they are trying to do, and get their designs in there, when she won't allow it and then you slap them on the hand for not standing up to the Dragonlady!
Way to go. I am so glad that someone else sees what I see.
You are so right. Everyone that she has been paired with has not gotten along with her. I have no idea why she is still on the show. These designers don't see how intimidating she can be. It's really sad how this person is still in the running for design star.
If she had a show on HGTV, I'd turn the channel…….can not stand her superiority complex – that she knows better than everyone else.
I totally agree. I can't stand watching her. I was surprised to see that she is 2nd in the fan votes. I would watch any other show over hers, even Doug's!
Mark a fave again? I disagree. His rope ladder contribution and clock were so so, nothing memorable. I will say, he is nice to look at:)
Emily, the winner from last year, has an annoying voice and speech pattern. She needs to slow down and enunciate better. Also, I don't like her show concept. HGTV just needs to let her design the final room from the beginning. Not design, tear up, and redesign. This shows "waste" of time and money– that is not the message that the public needs to see in these economic times!!
I agree and obviously people were complaining because she no longer gets a second and third chance to get it right. The new season has her designing the room one time, though I did see a recent episode and she repainted the walls. I do like her and I think she has potential. It's a learning process for her, she's a stylist, not an interior designer. She offers something different and people are intrigued.
What happened to the one that won the time before Emily? It was a blond gal, haven't seen anything she has done except one of those summer fill-in one show things. It seems like David is the only one with a show that is continuing. Unfortunately they moved it to Miami with a cast that is like fingernails on a blackboard. I don't watch at all anymore.
I agree about Color Splash Miami- David is great as always but his staff just doesn't come across the way his old staff did. They all got along so well as a team. I miss them. Bring them to Miami!
SOOOOO wrong, Love Emily and her style (almost as good as Sarah from Design Inc, just not quite as mature). Only complaint about Emily is that I have a hard time finding her show
I agree with Bee about Emily's annoying voice and speech pattern. She needs to slow down in her speech. It all runs together for me and I rarely hear everything she says. She also needs to see a dentist and have a cap put on her right tooth on the side. It would greatly improve her appearance. I like the format of her show this season. It is much better. I also like that someone speaks about what she is doing in a voice I can hear clearly. It improves the show since I can't understand Emily. I like her show much better now and enjoy her approach to decorating and finding unusual things to put in her rooms.
Wow, way to tear a girl apart! I think Emily is adorable, genuine, smart and talented. I like that she's real, I like that she stumbles over words sometimes and I would love to see her show succeed. I guess I don't understand why people feel the need to tear apart a person's appearance like that, she's a designer not a model…
Agreed – I love Emily exactly the way she is! I also preferred her show with the two-step process. It wasn't showing her "making mistakes" it was showing how you can go over the top when you focus on one style, and how you can balance by weaving multiple styles in one decor. I found that refreshing and innovative, but now they've taken out the layering of styles on her show and gone straight to the one makeover. Too bad.
Get her tooth capped? Really?? Give me a minute to pick my jaw up off the floor. Then again, you might be 15 years old or younger and that would explain such a ridiculous comment. Young kids can be all about the superficial.
I am so glad to see someone else feels like I do. She was at the bottom of the pack the whole season and then whoops she won…… I dont see it, everything about her is like chalk on a black board and her whole design idea seems to be "I dont know what I am doing so I will just keep redoing untill they can stand it" That is not professional at all.
I like Emily!! at the beginning of last season, i really thought she was going to be a goner fast. But she lasted and won! I didnt think she had a chance. And I like her show. Obviously, the judges liked her too…….she comes across as very real, and l like many of her rooms. Her looks and voice are fine to me, maybe she should just speak a bit slower, but I really enjoy Emily and will watch her. Now on the opposite end of the spectrum is Antonio, and he is imaginative, but way too wild for me.
Cathy is condescending, can't get over how she takes over the other person, so tacky. I am super impressed with Karl. I scrolled through his work and loved his use of White woodwork! I get sick of all the modern styles, I prefer a Traditional, classier, wealthy look then what I am seeing from all the designers.
My aunt couldn't agree with you more Lisa. She watched last week's and yesterday's episodes and she asked, what was up with all the contemporary design? She added, she would be so disappointed if she were a homeowner or a guest and the rooms looked like they did. I myself, like contemporary but believe all designs should have a mix of different styles to keep them from becoming tiresome. Too much of a good thing is boring.
I agree! Cathy needs to go…If Karl wins I will watch his show over and over…
Cathy, Cathy, Cathy! She needs to be eliminated soon because of her "I am better than everyone else" attitude.
I am also not completely on page with Meg. She did do a good job this episode, but she is very inconsistent.
Kevin needs to go soon as well. He takes a lot of risks, but some of them just don't work.
I feel like Mark is improving week by week. I think he is really showing us that he wants to win. Loved the rope ladder!
My dark horse is Kellie. She hasn't been in the bottom, but she has been in the top 2 once and has just hung around. Look for a big statement from her.
I liked Mark's rope ladder, too… the only problem I had with it is it seemed to take waaaay too long to construct. Since they were at the shore it is possible he might have been able to purchase one. But that tableaux he put together was really nice.
I totally agree with you about Cathy! She can't seem to get along with any of her teammates, runs all over them, doesn't want to hear any of their ideas, and only wants to shop. She spent the day painting chairs, then when Kevin returned from his shopping trip, she says she can't do the walls all by herself. Of course not, she did all the "fun" stuff while he was gone, so he'd feel obligated to help her with the walls, just so the room would get finished on time. She did that on the last episode, too. She did all her shopping, then came back & complained that she couldn't be expected to paint the walls. She has no desire to mess up her nails or clothes. She doesn't want to do ANY of the DIRTY work. She need a severe attitude change, or better yet, she just needs to GO!!!!
Cathy is being hidden in the pack, and not getting eliminated for her total lack of design talent. Her television production company has a show ready to go after DS. That's why she is acting so superior and holier than thou. You are going to see a Cathy Hobbs Design Show on HGTV, in the near future. Well, if your are stupid enough to watch her.
OMG, thank you. Now I will have time to catch up on all of the recorded shows I have been saving. I certainly will NOT watch Cathy. I am so sick of her and her attitude. And they have yet to compliment her on anything she has done or purchased. That railing last night was ridiculous. I thought it brought the ceiling down and made the room look smaller.
Wait — Cathy has already been given a show?! Then get her the hell off of this one. She must be related to or sleeping with someone at HGTV…
No Way!!! I am horrified that she is on this competition. That is so unfair to the other contestants who could have had a shot at her spot. I will not suppport her show or watch it ever. She ruins each episode with her holier than thou attitude. I hate to see people mistreated and she is the expert in this regard.
Well, I'll turn off her program just like I do "Selling New York". Actually, I turn the channel to DIY
I sure hope so, then you all will see this lady has talent and style. She isn't the only one with issues. If you listen and watch closely, she saves everyone she works with from elimination with her style and choices. It seems that if you have good taste and make sound decisions, you shouldn't have to fight about it. If her partners would listen to her instead of trying to make an individual impression, they would win. If her partner had spent his time going shopping with her instead of wasting it on that ugly floor, then he would have been able to make selection. However, week after week, his ego gets in the way and frankly, he should have been eliminated. Time management abilities, skills, talent, and know how are attributes Cathy has that no one on that show can beat. When along, she rocks; when with a partner, she rocks! I think she should win. and I believe you do so…Carol
Welcome to the boards! I'm glad someone from the Real Estate Staging Association has finally come to see what the viewers think of their entry into the competition. It's quite brave of you to post – though I have to admit it is safer to do it now than it would have been a couple of days ago when there was more traffic here.
guess you are a friend of this snake dirt cathy.. No she does not work with people. No she did not ask the guys to go shopping with her,, she just takes off and does NOT listen to a word they say. She is nasty, ugly, rude and condescending …. She should have been eliminated in episode 2.. no she does NOT rock .. she is a bug eyed mule toothed waste of time and energy…
Kellie's thing seems to me to be lime green and hot pink. Did you look at her portfolio? But of course, maybe you like lime green and hot pink. She is cute and very emo, so if she wins, I suggest that she should have a show that targets a very young audience.
You know… a kids' design show might be fun, now that I think about it. Teaching kids how to do fun stuff with their rooms, looking at cool furniture that can grow up with them. It would be good.
Kid's design? Didn't Trading Spaces do that already? and Dan Vickery, fan fave from season 4.
I meant, like, actually working with kids.
We need to just ignore Cathy. I think she's digging herself a very deep hole all by herself very well. Not sure how I feel about giving her so much space seeing all the blogs about her. I don't see Emily or David giving her any air time on their feedbacks! I think that's smart. She's not hgtv material and she'll go away eventually. In the meantime, I hope to see some of these designers really step up their game as elimination narrows the selection for a winner!
