Sneak Peek: Episode 5
The designers’ test this week? Build a kitchen dreamy enough to butter up guest judge Paula Deen. But for some of the designer pairs, it might just be a recipe for disaster…
Watch the sneak peek, then tell us your predictions for episode five.

Predictions: Will Cathy’s team go down in flames (again)? Will Mark and Kellie get it together? Who do you think will go home this week? Tell us in the comments below.

I agree 100% with everyone else, Cathy MUST go, she thinks she's the "boss"! No one died and left her the boss!!! I believe they are keeping her on to increase ratings, where in reality, she is damaging the atmosphere of the show and talents of the other potential designers! Kellie also has to turn off the "facet", each week she has to "cry"! I wouldn't want either one of them anywhere near my home, not even my dog house!!!!! Get them off the show and let those who have "talent" compete fairly!!!!!!!!
I agree, Cathy must go. She is unable to worth with others and as a designer she's going to have to work with others. I feel sorry for the designers that get paired up with her.
Its time this Omarosa twin is sent packing! ! ! ! !
I totally agree that there is always one that doesn't get along with the rest of the designers. I hope the same thing, but believe… she will think that she was right anyway! LOL!!!
I have watched DS from the first season, but frankly it has become a chore to watch. It is so hard to concentrate on the design with all the drama. Cathy Hobbs is just more of that Nina nonsense from last year.I was hoping the elimination of Mark Burnett would have put the show back on track. I would love to see more individual challenges, so each person could stand on their own merit and be voted off accordingly
The early seasons didn't have that many individual challenges at the beginning, either–it's cost-prohibitive for the production. Most of the early to mid-season challenges in most seasons were team challenges.
They're getting it back where it started–this season feels more like the other seasons of DS did than last season's bizarre set-up (I actually feel bad for the designers last season, who kind of got screwed by the format, so we always associate them with that rather sub-par season, which wasn't their fault).
How is it cost prohibitive to do individual challenges? The white room challenge is always an individual challenge. Does that cost more than traveling to an Inn in NJ and setting up the whole production? Why couldn't each "designer" have been given a room to redo? I sure the Inn had more than 3 rooms. That would have been a much better episode. Especially since the "teams" seemed to waste time negotiating/arguing with each other, and generally getting in each others way. Each would have 4 days to do ONE room. Easily doable, and they could have been judged on their own merit and abilities, with no one else to blame.
Well, each room would need furniture, and paint, and accessories and so on, rather than the furniture and accessories for one room shared by three contestants. White box challenges are fun, but if that was all they did, we'd be hearing, "Why don't we see them working for clients?"
I just don't think that, financially, it's a choice between individuals and small groups, but between small groups and last season's "tribe" challenges. Give me the small groups any day.
As I understand it paint is supplied free by sponsors, in any case there was an amount of money allocated for each of the three rooms. How much, we don't know, but there was shown "a fist full of dollars" on occasion, so I don't think it would have been difficult to divide, the total amount for the three rooms, by seven, and let each contestant go it alone with their own room. Seeing them work on a limited budget, might have lead to better choices in purchases and maybe they would have taken the instructions about re-purposing more seriously. And doing more with less is something HGTV viewers blog about wanting to see on HGTV generally.
The basic premise of choosing an individual "design star" can really only be done (in the real world) by seeing what they can do on their own as individuals. It can be done!
Don't know how that double posted, but it bears repeating: We need to see ALL individual challenges! And nothing else!
I would like to see Meg, Cathy and Kellie all on the same team. None of them have had to work with Cathy yet. Kellie gets emotional, Meg is a great designer, but somewhat isolated and Cathy would be able to magnify these qualities to see how each reacts! I actually liked Cathy's kitchen props. I thought nuetral bread colors and vegetables give you the sense that you are actually in the kitchen making dinner and it still looks like a model home. I think we need to focus on finding the top designer rather than to jump on band wagons to vote someone off. Cathy has probably exhibited rounds of self focused ambition, and if her design would have backed her up, it would have been fantastic, but let's see what happens this week.
I have been thinking about the "EGGS BY THE SINK" in the METAL container and wondered if Cathy has ANY COMMON SENSE at all. Think about it. When you think of farm fresh eggs do any of you think of a METAL CONTAINER? Metal containers on a farm are a dime a dozen but when it comes time to gather eggs, they are gathered in a wooden basket or a flour sack or even an apron – not a metal container at all. WHY? GEE, maybe because most folks understand metal conducts heat – and a metal container near a window and sink is going to conduct even more. Wonder if Cathy has ever heard the term SAMONELLA?
I viewed the video again. I was mistaken, her GREEN container was pottery not metal; it just looked like a metal floral bucket to me when I first watched the segment. Still not a good idea to set eggs in any container near a window IMO though. And the shape is ALL WRONG too. I did notice this buffet now includes oranges too. So there's cherry tomatos, hoagie rolls, giant roots, and oranges and eggs by the window. CLUELESS CATHY has to GO – PLEASE!!!
Maybe if it were A prop…….like A stick of butter ('cause its Paula) But last season, when they did kitchens,over-propping was a big no-no. Besides, it makes the kitchen look really cluttered, rather than seeing the design of the room. I would go with what you hear people on House Hunters are looking for also, the 'public' is who your design clients will be, right?
When Cathy sees the episodes on DS this season she will probably NOT see how difficult she has been! Difficult people rarely do……she would probably just point out where others were the source of her problems. Too bad for her (AND she fails to listen to critique, not sure how she would be with actual clients).
Cathy's kitchen props are awful. Karl move them anyway. If these guys would stop being so nice to her, maybe just maybe, she would get booted!
Cathy is a beeoitch ! She can't work with anyone! I feel sorry for whomever has to work with her ! More individual challenges for all the designers' sakes !! I like Karl, Mark & Leslie!
here here…Cathy has to go…she doesn't play nice.
Play nice? Are you a 5yr old?
I must say, that I agree with everyone regarding Cathy. She wants to take total control and do none of the work. I find her to be quite lazy and obnoxious. I am sure, that the judges she how she is, and I really don't know, why this goes unchallenged. I also think that Cathy, does an extremley bad camera shot. If she goes on to be the next Design Star, I think that I will stop watching. She surly does not have what it takes to be on TV. Her attitude is so flat, just like her designs.
Really….who WOULD watch if Cathy were to win?! you are right on, Ellen!
Glad to see that I am not the only one that feels this way about Cathy. And I hope she sees these post. You know the judges see all the takes during the designing so they have to know how she is even though she is not being judged on her attitude. It bothered me that Mark got criticized for not standing up to her or himself. HE REALLY TRIED but Cathy got her way in the end!
Yeah!!! I agree totally!
I agree as well….. I wish I was her team mate because we would both get booted…. I would not put up with her at ALL she is just MEAN and that is not fair to all the others…. they want them to work as a team but no one can work with her…..
I am a huge DS fan and have been watching since David Bromstad won. I believe the judges see all the tapes and know what Cathy is doing. I can not imagine they will let her stay with her "I'm the boss, not a partner in this room" attitude. I truly do NOT want her to go any further. I was in hopes that she was headed out the door last week, however, I believe her time is growing short. More personal designs and less teamwork would be great. I want to see what the designers come up with on their own. Thanks for listening!
The next challenge (after kitchen) is designing a wedding reception space; doesn't sound like too much individuality will be involved in that one, but who knows? some personal design style would be welcome about now. I am not a designer, but I know what I like and what I would enjoy having in my own home. So far, Karl has done the best work that could come to my house. I think that Leslie and Tyler may be the dark horses in this competition.
Tyler for sure, I like what I am seeing from him so far..
How do you know what will be next? (I'm just wondering, not trying to be rude)
