Sneak Peek: Episode 5

The designers’ test this week? Build a kitchen dreamy enough to butter up guest judge Paula Deen. But for some of the designer pairs, it might just be a recipe for disaster…

Watch the sneak peek, then tell us your predictions for episode five.

Paula Deen and Design Star Judging Panel

Predictions: Will Cathy’s team go down in flames (again)? Will Mark and Kellie get it together? Who do you think will go home this week? Tell us in the comments below.

  1. ps…whose kitchen with the red and yellow wall color is in the background photo with the judges? and does it look like bare light bulbs hanging down : ) maybe it's a work in progress…yuck…

  2. I've been traveling and just had a chance to watch this week's episode and was coming on to comment on Cathy. Cathy, I hope you're reading this or someone is telling you ..your attitude is terrible. And don't pull the "they're just saying that because I'm a strong, black woman", because that's exactly what I am and you're embarrassing us. Take a chill pill, let your talent and design speak for you. Hope to see some improvement.

    • Why bring race into it….even Cathy hasn't done that!

fanaholic on August 8, 2011 at 9:54 pm
    • Why don't you take a dose of reality with that chill pill. Cathy is by far the most efficient designer on this show, but like the rest of these people you want her to be "nice". If I had a choice, give me efficient over nice any day. And as a black women you should know that nice sisters finish last in business.

  3. The show is becoming more about the drama of personal confrontation than about design. I've been a fan forever, but frankly, I watch to learn and pick up ideas. I have not enjoyed this season at all so far because good design and creative challenges seem to be taking a backseat to the "team" approach. Throw in members of the team who seem to act like six year olds without the ability to "play well with others" and you lose the focus of the show — design and entertainment. Let's hope the producers realize they are risking loss of their audience with this new approach. I sure wouldn't watch a new program hosted by any of those designers who have been acting like brats instead of professionals. Give more individual challenges and fewer team assignments unless the judges begin to evaluate the design to include the behavior of the team members during the challenge.

    • I agree with you, but I have to say Tyler seems focused and not into the drama, just doing his thing.

tonythetiger on August 7, 2011 at 9:07 am
    • I totally agree. Some personalities overshadow any design skill they may have and would cause me not to watch their show.

Marie on August 8, 2011 at 7:19 pm
    • Amen! It is not nearly as fun to watch as it used to be, especially after I found out it wasn't as live as it used to be, either. I loved the short-lived shows where the real designers really did have a short time to put a room together–live on the show. Bring it back!

  4. Just finished watching again the Bed and Breakfast. Cathy even I can shop go back to staging better yet
    back to reporting!

    • I SO agree! i am very disappointed with Design Star this time, way to much drama! I don't watch Big Brother and those other foolish shows. I love design, creativity, I don't have a lot of money and what I watch on these shows has so helped my home. Please HGTV, more design and less drama, please!

  5. Remember – all of this season's episodes have been shot and edited. Most likely Cathy never saw any of the tapes of herself; otherwise I think she might have chosen to dial back on her obnoxious know-it-all attitude.

Mimi on August 6, 2011 at 11:33 pm
    • I think its just her personality. If she had dialed it back after watching I then she would have been fake which is not any better. I do respect you trying to be positive, however, Cathy would not do the same for you. sorry.

Shelli Godfry on August 7, 2011 at 12:51 am
    • I think Cathy would only see what the others did "to her", not how she responded. But, you keep dreaming.: ;)

  6. I am thrilled to see others agree with me on Cathy and her attitude. I was sooooo surprised when I saw her ranking on the fan fav page…She must have a lot of family voting for her. One thing I know for sure, if she wins I will not watch her show. I dont care if she is a good designer, her personality is terrible and her lack of ability to be a team player is awful. Her rooms look staged more than homey. She must go!!o.0

Shelli Godfry on August 7, 2011 at 12:49 am
    • I was so surprised with her ranking as well. It made me believe she has a big family voting for her, as I do not believe she is a person with so many friends. This woman did not show any creative side so far. Any person with money and good taste is able to do what she is doing on the show. Time to go home Cathy, your place in not on TV for sure!

Cindy on August 7, 2011 at 2:32 pm
      • She is being voted in by the Real EstateStagers Assoc., go on their website and leave a comment with their president Shell by hitting contact us

CharlesD on August 8, 2011 at 2:25 pm
        • Thank you for that, I made sure to do JUST that.

Crista on August 8, 2011 at 10:15 pm
    • I thought she may get some of her votes because of where Karl's vote button is located….I almost voted for her by mistake!

Joanne on August 8, 2011 at 4:24 pm
  7. KELLI needs to stop the whining and crying, she acts like a little baby..geez..not a good fit for a TV show.

Tonythetiger on August 7, 2011 at 9:05 am
  8. I'm with you Shellie! How in the world is she able to score on the graph like she does. She must spend all her free time voting for herself because she would think she deserved to be there….NOT!!! I'm a huge Kellie fan but she does need to get her emotions under check. I wish David and Candice would talk to her. They are the kindest of all the supervisers but still know what they're talking about. There are just too many nice cooks and the nice cooks need to dip the other's heads in a soup pot! Karl, Meg and Kellie are still my favorites.

Aunt LoLo on August 7, 2011 at 12:41 pm
    • I agree with you and I think Kellie's designs are good ones.

Libby on August 7, 2011 at 2:58 pm
  9. Can't help but agree with everyone that Cathy must go! She has no concept of how to be a"Team Player", She has yet to understand that whether working with a co-designer or with a customer, DESIGNING IS A TEAM PROJECT! Cathy won't have many customers if she treats them like she has her fellow DS designers.
I love Leslie and Karl, and think there is some talent (better than we've seen so far) from Tyler and Meg.

SuzieQ on August 7, 2011 at 12:43 pm
  10. I think the best designer will show up at the end. What I don't understand is, are these the most talented designers to apply for the show? Kevin had zero taste in color choices. And why are the men always putting up backsplashes while the women shop? Isn't this 2011? I love Leslie's designs. She is a smart, attractive woman who could create a very different type of design show, vote for Leslie and Cathy will go away on her own, she juust isn't as talented as some others.
