I totally agree with Kim above. Maybe it's my age (54) but…hanging fabric from the ceiling has been done before A-LOT. Also…here in Texas, most 'receptions' have a table set aside for placement of any gifts brought for the couple. I don't remember seeing any such place set aside for gifts. One more remark…I did NOT agree with placement of the wedding cake/table in the center of the dance floor! OMG! I have never been to a wedding reception where the cake is in the middle of the dance floor!…Where are we to 2-step and get our 'boogie' on!?! The cake needed to be set apart, in a location where it could be viewed and enjoyed by guests when the new couple traditionally 'cuts the cake' with no risk of damage/accident.
Fran on August 16, 2011 at 10:31 am
Placement of the cake at receptions could be a regional thing. I've been to at least 7 weddings in the past two years and the cake has been in the center of the dance floor. It was cut and removed prior to dinner so it didn't get in the way of getting "our boggie on".
DED on August 16, 2011 at 11:26 am
It's actually considered inappropriate to bring gifts to a wedding reception, thus a gift table should not be necessary. Gifts are supposed to be sent to the bride's home.
TexasFan on August 17, 2011 at 5:06 am
I think that is regional as well, it is often used for gifts brought by the grooms male friends, and out of state friends and relatives who did not attend the bridal shower. On the east coast a gift table is normal, it is usually off to the side. In any case with regards to this thread, while the fabric canopy is not new, it is a good solution for highlighting an area in a big loft space. How much cutting edge design do you want to see at a wedding anyway? You are supposed to be looking at the bride.
CharlesD on August 18, 2011 at 3:44 pm
I have NEVER heard that it is inappropriate to bring gifts to the reception.. must be a Texas thing?!?!?!
How do you send them to the brides home? Isn't she going to be moving soon (that is if they aren't already living together)

YES, THE CAKE IN THE MIDDLE OF DANCE FLOOR……CAN YOU IMAGINE THE MESS? CRAZY, BUT OF COURSE CATHY THOUGHT OF THAT ONE, AS I RECALL…..FIGURES, BUT IN HER GLOBAL VIEW, THAT IS OK…YES, FABRIC ON CEILING HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE BUT IT DID HELP HIDE THE OPEN, COLD ROOM….BUT BRIGHTORANGE AGAINST LILAC?????? ENOUGH SAID, I GUESS
danny on August 21, 2011 at 9:22 pm
I agree with this so much. I have never seen or heard of a cake in the middle of a dance floor. When you strat dancing and someone falls on the table there goes the cake. So glad someone else thought the same.
Connie on August 21, 2011 at 11:48 pm
VJ….WOW CATHY BACK TO POISON THE WELL………….PROBABLY MORE PURPLE OR LILAC PAINT AND LOTS AND LOTS OF STAGING JUNK……UGH…..
DAN on August 22, 2011 at 12:00 pm
Thank goodness I am not the only one who has never been to a wedding with a cake in the middle of the dance floor. I do agree there was really not much new in the design area of this episode. I do disagree with the bride and groom not seeing the area before the reception started, that is asking to much. Totally agree with everyone who was glad to see Kathy go. No, if they gave her a show I would not watch it. I have enough stress at the office!
mal on August 29, 2011 at 12:53 pm
I'm so glad the judges finally realized what a no talent Cathy is! ….. She was a complete bragger with absolutely no talent to go with it!!! ….. Cathy was unpleasant, obnoxious and total pain… I'm surprised she lasted this long as she couldn't get along with anyone!!! Good bye and good riddance Cathy!!
CherylM. on August 16, 2011 at 10:45 am
How right you are. And why did she leave her "Emmy" award winning broadcasting career to become a home stager? I would think it would have been perhaps a creative sideline b/c I doubt it's as lucrative as broadcasting. Would love to know why she left broadcasting.
Moonbeam on August 16, 2011 at 9:07 pm
YES, MAYBE BROADCASTING WOULD BE BEST FOR ATTENTION-SEEKING CATHY…SHE LOVES THE SPOTLIGHT….DON;T KNOW IF IT LOVES HER BACK? OR IN MAGAZINES…THEN, WE DON;T HAVE TO LOOK AT HER AGAIN.
danny on August 21, 2011 at 4:22 pm
Glad to see Cathy GO!!!!! She can now design more magazine rooms and wedding receptions that we do not have to see. Think Mark, Kellie and Meg will be the top three.
Mrs. D on August 16, 2011 at 10:48 am
Ditto. So glad Cathy is gone; she just is not a team player, and her sweetheart table fell flat. It certainly wasn't Victorian, nor did it use the bride's colors. And she FORGOT THE FLOWERS!!! In the beginning of the show I think Karl was butting heads with the guys because he was trying to do what they told him last week–speak up for what he believes. When they couldn't all reach a compromise, instead of picking one area to shine in he seemed to just give up and become a helper instead of a designer. And that's what hurt him so much this week. And I agree, Mark, Kellie and Meg are the top three. Can't wait to see who makes it to No. 1!!!
joanpy on August 16, 2011 at 12:45 pm
I completely agree about Mark, Kellie and Meg! But, don't discount Karl yet. I give him one more week to stand up and shine. CLEARLY he is an exceptional Artist. I agree with 'joanpy' he more or less gave up when Mark and Kevin were together with the whole lounge thing. The thing is.. I totally agreed with him in the way he wanted to go with it! He was clearly right in keeping it loungy rat pack retro.. but they could have done it so it "FIT" with the rest of the design of the room. White sleek furniture (which is what Karl wanted) would have flowed sooo much nicer with the bar and the rest of the space. But if he doesn't stand up next week… I think he will be toast! It's too bad too.. cuz he is kinda sweet on camera as well!
Just glad Cathy is gone. I would never watch her. She's arrogant and far from talented. I did better at my daughter's wedding!!

Finally our "want to be Martha Stewart" is gone. Thank you HGTV. I do like Kelly But I agree with Fran & Kim on their above noted comments. I also agree with Charles D's comments regarding Mark. He really is a one trick pony. I never understood how the rope netting on the wall was such great design. I think about 29 yrs ago it was chic to decorate your bar or bathroom area with fish netting. Also Karl did a lot more work in setting up the fabric than Mark did with the lighting. Basically I believe that the HGTV judges are lot less perceptive than their audience.
Jane on August 16, 2011 at 10:54 am
JANE….GOOD ONE …MARTHA STEWART WAANBE….MAYBE MARTHA WILL PICK HER UP FOR A NEW SHOW ON HER CHANNEL????? FABOULOUS. YES, MARK, THOSE WALL HANGINGS ARE BEYOND ME….ONCE WAS OK BUT NOT EVERY WEEK MAKING ANOTHER LITTLE HOMEMADE THING…..YOU ARE TIGHT…MACRAME WAS A BIG THING IN THE 70S….THAT IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE.
danny on August 21, 2011 at 4:26 pm
Karl wasn't supposed to be working with the fabric to start with, that was Kellie's thing. Karl was supposed to do the groom's lounge, bar area with the other guys. Maybe he should stay focused!
DR25 on August 21, 2011 at 6:43 pm
DR25……YES, KARL WAS RUNNING ABOUT A LOT….BUT ALL DESIGNERS WERE IT SEEMED. HE TRIED TO TELL THE OTHER GUYS ABOUT THE FURNITURE BUT WOULD NOT LISTEN SO HE GAVE UP AND LEFT AND MARK ALSO SO HE COULD DO SOME LIGHTING BEFORE THE FURNITURE WAS EVEN CHOSEN…BAD IDEA. MARK WAS SO FOCUSED ON HIS LAST-MINUTE WALL SKATEBOARD THING HE DID NOT HELP MUCH EITHER REALLY…..LESLIE WAS DISTRACTED BY CATHY AND HER WORK WAS VERY SAD….THAT WONDERFUL TABLE COVERED UP BY BAD FABRIC.
danny on August 21, 2011 at 8:24 pm
Ahhh, we can breathe a sign of relief now that Cathy is off of the show. We can now focus on what we enjoy Design Star for…. watching talent unfold. She was like a dysfunctional family member being/creating center of attention for herself and deliberately causing everyone else to be out of balance. Her cosmic propwash spewed just too much negativity.
I would hope we can see the other people really blossom now and have fun with the show.
Helen on August 16, 2011 at 11:01 am
Yes, she was bragging from the very first episode — just obnoxious. It was so nice of Meg to offer to put some flowers on Cathy's table, and Cathy wouldn't even answer her. Then Cathy tried to say she thought "they" (meaning Meg, too) were taking responsibility for the flowers. Cathy wouldn't even discuss the flowers with "they"! Meg should have let Cathy's table look even more barren than it already did by not offering to put flowers. But Meg is a kind person who was thinking of the bride and groom. Not always a good idea, though, in a competition. In the season (I think the third) where Jennifer Bertrand won, Matt, the runner-up, had givne her the best carpenter b/c he was thinking of the homeowners they were rebuilding homes for in New Orleans, homes that had been destroyed in Katrina. Matt figured Jennifer needed the carpenter more than he did so that her home would turn out best for her homeowner, and I think it cost him the competition. And where is Jennifer now? We should have had Matt. I guess the contestants often have to choose between making the customer happy or winning the competition.

Thank You HGTV for finally getting Cathy off of the show . She had to blow her own horn because she sure could not design. We got tired of hearing her drama and not working with the other designers. She acted as if they were beneath her and there to do all the work and her get the credit. Bye Bye Cathy yahooooooo
Brenda on August 16, 2011 at 11:02 am
Agree! She wouldn't take responsibility for her own table, which annoyed one of the judges. I also thought it was funny that the only thing the judges liked about Leslie's table, the lamps, were the very things that Cathy had told Leslie were wrong for that table. Even in the first episode, the judges liked Leslie's work on the room she did with Cathy, and they dissed the project Cathy did. Some people never learn that pride comes before a fall.
Moonbeam on August 16, 2011 at 9:17 pm

So glad Cathy is gone!!! Nobody would want to watch her on TV…she is rude and obnoxious!!! I totally agree about the comment on Mark…seems like he can only focus on one thing at a time…with the kitchen design, he did not even finish the backsplash on the other side of the kitchen!!!!

Let Mark design by himself and you will see that he will shine. As was seen in his white box challenge. He is doing EXACTLY the right thing by finding an element that he take total ownership of and making it look fantastic. Let the other designers run around like wild people. He is a star designer and great on camera. Watch out for him, all you ladies who resent a man winning this show.

There's a question I'd LOVE to ask David…
Last year he did the "dish" on each Design Star episode- but he did so as an observer. This year he is a participant. So, David- Does getting to know the designers and their personality quirks change the way you approach your video blog? Are there things you'd say as an observer that you can't bring yourself to say as someone who actually knows these people?
originalTQ on August 16, 2011 at 11:20 am
GREAT QUESTIONS! I personally can't sit through any of Emily's observations. I would prefer for Candace to be the one who is doing it. I didn't much care for Emily as a DESIGNER so why would I want to listen to her? David and Candace have IT. They know design and they can transform space so beautifully! Those opinions I DO care about. Bummed so much of David's "dishing" revolves around the CAMERA challenges instead of the DESIGN WORK.
