David dishes on this week’s many design faux pas (missing bunk beds, anyone?). Plus, who was he most disappointed (and even “irritated”) by this week?
What did you think was this week’s biggest design disaster? Tell us in the comments below.

i would like to know if the show goes back and redo these rooms that are not good.i think they should.
bjm on August 23, 2011 at 11:10 am
I think they should too. Those two boys did not deserve the rooms they were given. Plus, from a mothers perspective, the rooms were completely impractical and unsafe given their ages.
brokenresolutions on August 23, 2011 at 3:15 pm
Yes, HGTV does go and redo or complete the rooms. Vern Yip mentioned that in an earlier season.
Ellen on August 24, 2011 at 5:10 pm
They do not always go back and in the blog directly from HGTV they did NOT go back and fix those two rooms !!! if that family had to pay for HGTV then pay someone else to fix the mess without a refund from HGTV I would be extremely angry..

leslie's room was way to crammed with stuff for a kid that age! she tried to mesh a teen room with a kid room and it did not work! and while I like kellie, even my hubby said where are the bunkbeds and she could have done so much more with a sports theme! The kid even had his own jersey in a frame on the floor that she could have used, found out his favorite sport/team and ran with it!

COULDN'T EVEN DO A GOOD JOB FOR A CHILD'S BEDROOM???? DUH….GO COPY A ROOM FROM POTTERY BARN KIDS…THAT WOULD HAVE WORKED CONSIDERING SHE COULDN'T DO IT HERSELF….AND SHE SHOPPED AT POTTERY BARN!!!!! JUST SAD
danny on August 24, 2011 at 7:13 pm
I have wondered the same thing.. White washed floors done incorectly & no bunk beds for the little guy were clearly desiner mess-ups.
Donna on August 25, 2011 at 9:55 am
As a mom, she'd understand better than most that even though kids are literal thinkers, the things they want in a room are very "of the moment" and going too far or too literal on a theme means that a boy that age finds the room too "baby" a year later. Yes, she should have put in bunkbeds and gone a little more to a sleek/modern feel rather than the Pottery Barn look, but there was solid reason behind trying to steer away from the very literal interpretation of a boy that age.

Is this some type of joke? KELLY should’ ve been sent home before even saying who was “safe” on the show this week. What she did was wrong on so many levels. Not only did she disregard every single request the homeowner had, she put a HUGE safety risk in that child’s bedroom, and the level of “design” was so sparse that she didn’t have to try to rush hanging things at the last minute that might not have been level. Did anyone even consider the safety of that child? Every bunk bed that I’ve ever seen has rails so the child doesn’t roll off. This week’s Design Star, my favorite show, left me wondering about the entire goal of the show. I watch this network daily, I CAN’T fathom what the judges were thinking this week letting go Leslie and Kevin, who both have ability and personality, and keeping someone who cries like a 13 year old girl who I find to be very unprofessional. My friends and family wonder if her child like personality has the judges sympathy.
I was very disappointed in Leslie, Kellie and Meg. Come on they are the designers not me… LIttle kids LOVE lights – flashlights, colored lights, etc. – put something on the floor that you can step on that turn lights on and off or something on the wall (like the records were except make them push button lights). And that bed Leslie, that was not a little kids bed!!!. I really thought Kellie knew better since she talks about her kids all the time. She should have given the little boy what he wanted… If you get a good bunk bed as he gets older you can take them down and make twin beds out of them and she should have done a couple of colored lockers.. If I was that little boy I would have been very disappointed!!! They didn't really listen to the parents/home owner. *** I think the boys rooms need to be done over!!!*** Meg's story book/reading room was a good thought but iit didn't look finished – needs more help.

The best designers are proving to be Mark and Karl!! I love their designs and would watch bothof their shows!!!

Me too! They bring ideas beyond color and pattern. They work with the integrity of the home and bring out architectural and textural elements that bring depth. Love them!
rosebud2005 on August 26, 2011 at 10:52 am
Yes, they are. I do like Karl more, but would be happy with either one as the winner. They both have a lot to offer. Who knows, we might see the runner-up on a future show! Best to both of them. Now I must go and cast my daily votes.

Karls a good designer but he can be a bit snipity under pessure… and he is't great at camera challenges. But other than that.. yeah, his designs are rocking

What is the secret to actually watching one of David's videos?? I get 3 words then several seconds of buffering, then 3 more words, etc.

You must have slow internet speed, I'd guess. You can do a "speed test" online and find out how fast your connection is. These videos play fine for me, but I've been where you are many times. It's frustrating, I know.

Aside from Karl's room, Mark's kitchen table (though it would look better in a more rustic style home) and Meg's row of candle lanterns (great idea, but major points off for being crooked), that whole house was terrible.
I feel so sorry for the family, you could tell they hated most of the rooms but were too polite to say so. I hope HGTV paid for another makeover so they're not stuck with a house full of crap.
What was Kellie thinking? "I didn't want to be too literal…" Small kids are literal! When they say they want bunk beds, that's what they want! Give 'em a freakin' bunk bed! She should have been sent home for breaking that poor little boy's heart.
redrabbit on August 23, 2011 at 12:16 pm
Exactly – what is hard about "I want a bunk bed"? Kellie could have done so much in that room, but instead she ignored what he wanted and the room was horrible. He was crushed, you could see it on his face. And she's a mom!!! She should have gone home. I agree with the earlier comment, I hope HGTV has David do the boy's room and give the kid a bunk bed and some sports stuff.
guest on August 23, 2011 at 5:25 pm
I was so looking forward to seeing this sports themed room when it was done! I watched the show and my hubby and I were throwing ideas back and forth about what we expected to see! Imagine our surprise when we didn't see even the basic sports things in the room! And a bunkbed is so very typical for kids that age! And an sports theme bunk bed in a bright basic color and his favorite team/sport, etc. The little boy even had a jersey framed and ready to be hung on the wall and I don't recall seeing that anywhere! I was very let down by the finished product! Kellie has rocked other rooms but this one was a total loss!
Joe on August 24, 2011 at 6:17 pm
I agreed with everything you said until the very end, when you said "Kellie has rocked other rooms." I have not seen that. Even her cabbage candle ideas have been done done done before. I am not happy she's in the lead so she'll have her own online show. I won't be watching it.
I hadn't noticed the team jersey you mentioned! Wow, how did she not even use that?!?

I can't imagine having such a short period of time to plan – shop – do a tv spot and not have a bad showing. I enjoy the show and I have heard contestants admonished NOT to be so literal in their interpretation of what the "clients" have asked for. Kellie messed up – it happens – but it was apparent from the outset that she was struggling with how to make the ordinary, extraordinary. It is clear that the judges take into consideration the "stars" past accomplishments or lack thereof. There were soooo many misses this week the judges must have had a difficult time.
guest on August 23, 2011 at 12:26 pm
Karl's design was great – what was the fabric used on that beautiful headboard? My favorite room was the dining room, although the homeowners didn't react the way I would have – I'm not sure if they liked it. The upstairs landing was just missed opportunities. I'm so glad I didn't have to watch Kathy again this week.
no5 on August 23, 2011 at 12:27 pm
I think the reason they didn't react the way you thought they should have was because I heard the wife ask for something elegant. I thought the room while nice was more rustic in appearance rather than elegant. I do agree with you on Karl. He did an outstanding job. I think he listened to his clients, gave them what they asked for, and it seemed to suit the style of the house.
sharon on August 23, 2011 at 7:44 pm
SHARON….YES, DINING ROOM WAS NOT ELEGANT AT ALL….VERY EARTHY, WOODSY, OF COURSE FROM MARK. KARL WAS SUPERB…..SO FINELY CRAFTED AND PERSONAL IN EVERY DETAIL…..IF HE COULD DO THAT WHY COULDN'T THE REST GET THEIR WORK DONE ON TIME???? MAYBE JUST NOT PROS OR CAPABLE????? TOO BAD
danny on August 24, 2011 at 7:20 pm
yes Sharon I agree … the clients asked for a dining room for ADULTS something elegant and adult oriented. They received a more family room kitchen table.
Karl so far has been the best overall!! I wish this show was live or a 1-2 weeks off instead of already completed and they know the winner so our opinions mean nothing
I do hope Karl wins wins. his ideas and designs are good and he is fun to watch.
I wish Tyler did not get booted so early I think he would have been a better contender than Kellie and definitely cathy who should have been booted then instead of Tyler. Meg has good ideas but can not adjust. Kevin had a good design but need to just rearrange the furniture a bit. yes his screening was too loud but honestly Kellie should have gone. Cathy should be removed from the voting list since she was beyond nasty and selfish
StraightShooter on August 27, 2011 at 10:56 am
The fabric on the headboard was a blanket! Loved it! Also loved the molding he added to the windows and that he actually gave the homeowners what they asked for; romantic but not too feminine or flowery. Well done. And my daughter and I couldn't agree more that it was a relief not to watch Kathy's eyes bug out.
Kainoa on August 24, 2011 at 12:22 am
If I hired a designer to come and design a room in my house, I would expect them to listen to some of the things I like and work with me on the look… It seems most of the designers on this show don't do that. They act like they know what's best… and proceed, overriding any thoughts or views from the client. I think it's because this show isn't about the people being designed for and what they want.. it is about the designer and their talents. So why bother having anyone tell them what they want, it isn't gonna matter anyway.
Since this show dismisses the owner's opinions.. then they shouldn't do them. The show should be a design this space, for instance… design a kitchen using modern appliances using your ideas. And let the designers show off their design skills and ideas.
I don't like the pop in camera shots.. Everyone knows if it were the designer's own show, they would have time to fix mussed hair, and clothes, plan out what they will be saying or describing, and working on the timing. And putting to good use… an editor.. So these off the wall spontaneous (???) camera shots are useless and boring.
I would like to see a budget… for each design done. Also I would like to see how and why the designer chose to go about things the way they did.. instead of the rush.. rush… rush… hurry… hurry… hurry.. it gets tiresome.
