David on Episode 7: Where Were the Bunk Beds?!

David Bromstad With Design Star contestants

David dishes on this week’s many design faux pas (missing bunk beds, anyone?). Plus, who was he most disappointed (and even “irritated”) by this week?

What did you think was this week’s biggest design disaster? Tell us in the comments below.

  1. I love Karl's and Marks designs. Maybe two go home this week ,maybe two new shows. I love HGTV but the same stuff over and over again . Trust me two new shows would be the talk of the town! It's so unexpected. Oh and did I mention GOODBYE KELLI you are a terrible designer and you don't deserve clients who actually pay you!

    • Kelli actually has in her portfolio twine and moss balls in a hallway as if……I think she is next to go too and so surprised she is still there too.

      DOD10 on August 23, 2011 at 4:27 pm
      • that's debatable…

        I don't think so on August 27, 2011 at 11:39 pm
    • Karl and Mark are top notch….real designers. Everybody should have gone home except Karl and Mark. Then the rest of Design Star season we could watch and learn something. Meg…what a disaster. Whiny. I would not have wanted to see what the designers did to the rest of my house after walking in and seeing what she did in the foyer and landing. EEEKKKK!

    • Wow… You're increadibly rude and incensitive…

  2. Whether you like what you see or not, I think the biggest enemy on the show is the timeline. I sit there biting my nails when the host calls "one hour left!" and the place is a shambles! Not everyone can work his or her best while under the gun. I guess that is part of the competition… who can plan and execute a design knowing they only have a fixed time to get it done. I would bet that the designs would be much better and the finished product would shine if an additional day was allowed.

mbdesignstar on August 23, 2011 at 12:46 pm
    • I agree – more time should be given to get a better result.

Connie on August 23, 2011 at 1:56 pm
      • I agree but there are some designers who pull off an amazing look in the limited timeline. I think that is what makes it so much fun to watch… seeing them scramble around like that :) horrible.. I know but true.

brokenresolutions on August 23, 2011 at 3:09 pm
    • I agree. That's why I hope the HGTV people made it right, even if it means redoing every room. Not right, even if it is free.

Diana Menendez on August 27, 2011 at 9:33 pm
    • You got that right!

Oh Yes! on August 27, 2011 at 11:50 pm
  3. Very disappointing season so far! The only two designers who I would watch (or have design anything in my home) are Karl and Mark. How could the others mess up so badly? Worst two kids rooms in any season of Design Star… Hope they brought in some real designers to fix them.

GeeBrr on August 23, 2011 at 12:56 pm
    • I feel same way, they can't leave the rooms as they are.I feel the homeowners were being polite, but very shocked at this HGTV'd.Please make it ALL right if any of it was substandard, and if it wasn't what they asked for.

Diana Menendez on August 27, 2011 at 9:29 pm
    • Hgtv edits their episodes in miss leading ways to make it more interesting. If you want to read first hand what was really going on visit kellie clemants modern wimsical blog. Here's her latest post. It's about episode 7. http://modernwhimsyinteriors.com/design-star/abse…. Her room disaster wasn't entirely her fault.

  4. Oh yeah… I forgot to mention… (1) that platform bed in place of the requested bunk beds was kind of dangerous for a small boy. What would keep a restless sleeper from just rolling off the edge? Plus, the underneath space was way too small for imaginative play with two or more kids. (2) that hula hoop with the curtain on it looked like it would survive one yank by a two year old and then come crashing down. Also, saw only hurt fingers with a two year old and that chalk board/clap board thingy. Over protective mom, I know, but I bet other moms saw the same problems.

    • ditto

  5. I thought most of the rooms were pretty bad. Kellie and Leslie had the two easiest rooms to design and they both bombed. I bet that poor kid doesn't spend one night in that dangerous lofted bed. The two year old's room was just ugly. I didn't like the wood wall divider but the kitchen table was beautiful, however what made
Mark think the home owners wanted a rustic look. The only room that looked attractive and professionally done was the master bedroom. Good job Karl. Now you just have to learn to work well with others. This season i don't care who wins.

    M.N. on August 23, 2011 at 1:49 pm
    • Yes, that divider and dining room was far too rustic for the rest of the house. Just because Mark likes wood does not give him the right to impose it on all the homeowners regardless of their tastes and the rest of the house. He messed up on 3 other shows because of wood.

Moonbeam on August 23, 2011 at 7:29 pm
      • MOONBEAM……THIS WOOD STUFF AND DARKNESS NEVER ENDS. WHAT IS GOING ON…..THE JUDGES ARE IMPRESSED EACH WEEK. AND THOSE RECORDS, THE ROPE STUFF, AND THE SKATEBOARDS…..WOULD YOU EXSCEPT THAT FROM A PRO?????????

danny on August 23, 2011 at 10:55 pm
    • LOVED Carl's master bedroom, and the girls definitely blew it on the easy rooms. They should know that kids more than any other clients know what they want! Felt bad for both boys.

Kainoa on August 24, 2011 at 12:16 am
    • I hope someone buys the boy a bunk bed. I agree the master bed was the best design. Karl is talented. However, we must count our blessing….at least catty cathy is gone!!

annhird on August 24, 2011 at 1:06 pm
  6. I was really disappointed with all the rooms this time. Even Mark's seemed skimpy to me. Karl's had some good ideas but his too seemed unfinished. Kellie really blew it as I'm sure she knows. I had picked her after the first show to win the whole thing. Now I don't know. I am so glad Kathy is gone. That wedding sweetheart table was a disaster. I work in a special events/catering business and we do better than the whole bunch of them all the time. Being in New York there must be so much opportunity for selection of materials, why do they end up with such mundane stuff?

Gayle on August 23, 2011 at 2:09 pm
    • Kellie could still win the whole thing. She has a fresh, new style (I believe, that is) that's at a level of experteze not scene on this show since David.

Kellie Rocks on August 27, 2011 at 11:45 pm
  7. I think the time crunch for this show may have something to do with the design results, but in the REAL WORLD there are deadlines to meet. You have to bring the A game each time. They all are trying to do there best, and sometimes it seems they try to be over-creative and over think things. Just keep it simple, listen to the client wishes and the great design will follow.

ngp on August 23, 2011 at 2:36 pm
  8. I now know that Mark can complete a room if he doesn't do the work. Sorry. He's always been the last minute on several "hands on" projects. He had good carpenter help along the way. I liked his room, but I think it was an easy one. The wall of records, alright, but my memory says I saw it on Trading Space via Hildy. Kevin, you did try. I still have no clue as to why you went where you did to find a mantle; you had to know it had to be a custom job. Kellie, Kellie, Kellie – the mom came to do the room and not the designer. There are sooooo many cool bunkbeds. Leslie, bless you, you tried. You really did, but it just missed. Karl, for me, you completed the room with extra details. It was a whole. For me, I think Meg had the most difficult space, huge, not welcoming, split into hug sections. Table needed to be round, not rectangular. Upstairs just not "warm" enough for a story corner. There were some really good pieces, but Karl wins my vote.

    shehopes2 on August 23, 2011 at 2:47 pm
    • SHEHOPES….YES, DESIGN ON A DIME CAME TO MY MND…IF A CLIENT WANTED DISCO LIGHTS, BLACK WALLS, AND PINK SHAG……MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, THE DESIGER WOULD WALK AWAY OR TRY TO TALK SOME SENSE INTO THAT PERSON? I DON'T KNOW…SEEMS SO UMNPROFESSIONAL TO ME THIS YEAR …LISTENING TOO MUCH OR NOT A LOT…..A DESIGNER GETS THE GIST AND THEN, DESIGNS THE CORREDT WAY :)

danny on August 23, 2011 at 10:25 pm
  9. Please enjoy hgtv and remember folks, the contestants bear no resemblance to the actual designers they are pretending to be.

CharlesD on August 23, 2011 at 2:53 pm
    • LOL! Thanks for injecting a little bit of humor here. Gosh I think we take ourselves way too seriously on this blog. Hehe. :p

      fanfair123 on August 23, 2011 at 11:32 pm
    • Charles, why don't you try out for DS? I'd love to see what you did with the restrictions the DS contestants have placed on them.

      @MsWildhack on August 26, 2011 at 10:27 pm
  10. I love Design Star. David is such an asset to the show. I also enjoy seeing visiting judges each week. The challenges are very interesting. I still like the white room the best. But doing a whole house with different rooms for each designer seemed to be a pretty good idea too. What happened? Such a dissappointment (to say the least) in the entry & bonus space, & both children's rooms. That should count heavily against those designers.
Mark's and Karl"s rooms were great. Both had good concepts. Good luck to them. I'm rooting for either one to be a winner.
