David on Episode 8: “It Was Like ’80s Granny, Not-So-Chic”
David dishes on the final four’s budget design challenge. Who “ignored him completely” and who was practically “peeing in his pants” backstage at The Nate Berkus Show? Plus, he breaks down the best and worst designs.
What do you think was the biggest disaster of episode 8? Tell us in the comments below.

Oh and Genevive your not so much of a artistic designer sorry but your just about like Meg and your shows i do not watch. There boring and you bring nothing new and fresh. Same old same old, Megs show would be like yours, boring. I don't see how u have a tv show and i don't see Meg having one either.
I agree. I hate "Dear Geniveve". I think her designs are ugly and she has no personality. Don't know how she got on HGTV.
I am so sad to see Kellie go. She was my favorite. I love her fun personality she has and the real life designs she brought to her room. Didn't really like Megs room. Would never do the wood treatment she did on the walls and didn't like the way the shelves were done. She comes off hyper and makes me nervous just watching her.
Loved the spoon wall Kellie did, the curtains looked good considering she had a problem with them, loved the bar stools. Hers was my favorite room this week. Really didn't think Karls "book" shelf was that big a deal.
I will probably not watch the 3 who are left since I really don't feel a connection with them. Maybe Mark! Such a shame!
PS: Just read another's comment about Kellie and last weeks room: Not doing bunkbeds and lockers!
I guess that's why she had to go. Oh well!
I do not see how Meg won the challenge. If that was my room I would have to either immediately rip down the molding or add horizontals in between for a wall of random squares & rectangles. Otherwise those stripes made it look like bars in a prison painted light yellow. I did not find it at all attractive. The only redeeming piece was her table. I did not see it as a designerd room, more like a before waiting for a designer to save it.
I totally disagreed with Nate about Mark's shelves, I loved them they were very modern. Yes that large wall could have used a piece of art but some people prefer a minimal look. I would have put more of those shelves on that wall to mix the modern & vintage and also tie the two sides together.
Karl was surprisingly comfortable on camera, so happy for him. His "bookshelves were a nice idea but I don't like seeing L-brackets (Meg's shelves showed them too & so don't hold much weight) so for Karl's shelves I would have used 2 sets for each shelf (shaped more like a U) with a book the size of the bracket to coverup the brackets or strips of wood instead of brackets which could be painted fun colors (sorry I'm into my bright color phase now as my yard furniture would prove – no black metal left only blues greens, yellows, etc..) Glad we can vote online for fan favorites because I'm not huge fans of some of the past winners – don' t think they'll ever be able to surpass season 1 – David is & always will be the Ultimate Design Star. Like that they brought him in as a mentor, but I'd prefer him as a judge.
THIS IS A DESIGN SHOW AND WE ARE STARTING TO SEE A GLIMMER OF WHAT MAY BE REALLY GOOD FINALLY. I LIKE ALL THE FINALISTS SO WE WILL SEE WHAT COMES DOEN NEXT WEEK…SHOULD BE FUN
Kellie was crying in her goodbye speech about missing Meg.
Meg seems just fine that Kellie was sent home instead of her.
hmm..
Am completely puzzled about Meg's work. I don't like a single thing she has done from day one. Her color choices repel me. Her scale is off to me. Those HUGE basket things on the wall were UGLY. The vertical molding made the room look tinier and almost jail like. And the L-brackets (not even painted) were hideous. I wouldn't watch her! Her work looks CHEAP. Mark and Karl at least seem to understand scale, color, and texture and how to use them in interesting ways to make spaces look large and polished. My three favorites were Leslie, Karl, and Ty. So I am hoping Karl keeps bringing it! IMO Karl should have been the TOP DESIGNER this week, NOT MEG!
I completely agree! I cannot beleive that Meg has made it through to this point. She should have been gone long ago.
I'm echoing both of you. I've not liked any of Meg's choices and although many praise her personality, I find her smile fake-looking and her crocodile tears off-putting. I'm baffled as to why/how the judges found her table and painted design at all attractive and creative, particularly as it was purely form rather than function. Perhaps it translates better in person but the pastel colors, the two baskets on the wall at exactly the same height with no relation to the rest of the room, the choices in textiles and even the placement of the furniture didn't come off well to this member of the television audience.
The mixture of light and dark that Karl and Mark used offered the contrast and style a small, urban room needs. Karl's was far more successful and appeared finished, polished, sophisticated, and very functional. He's a serious designer that really understands how to approach a challenge holistically, designing an entire room as a consistent whole rather than a series of small vignettes such as Mark's little dinette (too small for dining, took up valuable space, and was ultimately meaningless). Mark is good but to me Karl is on a higher level than the others, a true professional and for all the talk of his fear of the camera, appears serious but friendly and with just the right balance of personality.
I'm mainly glad Kellie went home because if her kids watched her on tv & saw her consistently crying, I think it would make them sad. I just don't think she could be away from her kids long enough to do episodes unless they filmed it in the same city that she lived in & she had them with her on the set.
I don't recall if I ever heard her say she missed her husband….only her boys. Maybe she said she missed her family.
Do you realize how much editing goes into these shows? They film for hours and only put in 30 sec clips. You can't judge her on not missing her husband if the editors decided not to put it in. And just because it looked like she cried all the time doesn't mean she actually did. Once again, all producers and editors choice.
Yes. I agree with that. I don't think Kellie's heart was in it though. Think she went home because that's really what she wanted. Even if she had not come to that conclusion to verbalize it. Just the way she carried herself. They sent the right person home. Good luck to Kellie.
You can edit away a lot of things but you can't edit out the feeling they are conveying on camera. We saw that with Cathy. That's all I'm saying.
…no Amy…I don't know the exact amount of editing that goes into these shows. I daresay none of us is privy to that exact amount…..we can only surmise…er ..uh…judge….
And as far as your comment regarding judging her missing her husband…. I said..".I don't recall if I ever heard her say she missed her husband:…instead of saying…she NEVER mentioned missing him…every blog and post on this website is the opinion of the person making the comment…as such…all of us here are judging—
No use in getting all uptight, these people posting back are probably friends and/or related to Kellie. I never heard Kellie say she missed her husband either. Maybe she didn't. She's back home with her family and that's where she belongs. I didn't care for her personality, nor her designs. She should have left last week for the bunk beds. I read her blog this morning. She wrote about her entire experience from the day she went to the open casting call. She talked about how she'd give them exactly what they wanted, she'd do anything to be selected. Well, her emotional outbursts and sobbing had come to a halt the past 2 weeks, no more drama from the mama, so there was no need to keep her. So long!
GO KARLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!
KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON
YOU'LL DO AWSOME
