David dishes on why Mark failed this week and who the mentor thinks could “sell anything to anybody.” Plus, who surprised him the most? Hear his from-the-set take.
Which finalist would you rather watch on HGTV? Tell us in the comments below.

I think Karl has really developed as the season has progressed, however, I was very disappointed that Mark was sent home. He had a humble attitude that drew the viewer's attention to his innovative work instead of him and he projected a genuine love for what he was doing. I hate to say it, but I agree with an earlier post that, should Meg win, I would not watch her show. Meg's enthusiasm seems more about herself than her design or the final product. The creativity and the beauty seen in the end product should be the star of the show; not the designer. David Bromstad is the epitome of this–he designs amazing spaces and then, with quiet enthusiasm, leaves the homeowner to savor the beauty of his work.

Karl does make you smile. I look forward to those candid moments. It would be so neat if he did something like that on his show too. I usually agree with David's take but…"Hey David ! I don't like what Meg is selling" Karl on the other hand comes across as genuine. The fact that he has grown so much over the course of shooting tells me that his hosting skills will catch up with his incredible design sense. GO KARL !!!!

I agree. I really preferred Mark as a designer but understood the reasoning behind eliminating him. He came up with the most creative ideas throughout the challenge, but was definitely too nervous toward the end. If I had a choice between Karl and Meg I would also select Karl. I really haven't liked Meg's designs, they are too Kitchy. Her Tiny house didn't have anywhere to sleep! Karl's was by far the best in that challenge.

Karl has my vote for the Finals, I hope he can relax on camera and just deliver. He has good ideas and is fun to watch, a little crazy due to his scaredy catness, but once the novelty of the camera wears off he will do just fine.

I really wanted Mark to win, I think he has what it takes to have his own show. I wasn't crazy about the belts, but out of the contestants left I still think he has the best TV Design Star looks, personality and pizzazz!!!!
Linda on September 12, 2011 at 8:24 pm
I was upset that Mark was sent home….especially since they judged on the entire season. The judges thought Mark was very approachable, watchable and always brought unique and creative designs. In other words, he is great to watch, will always bring a unique perspective, and will be refreshing each week. Hmmmm….sounds like the perfect host to me! Very disappointed that they let him go this week.
bridget on September 6, 2011 at 11:06 am
I have enjoyed Mark as well, but he blew the camera time AND the belt thing was a bummer.
Maybe he could have woven the belt to make some great art! Good luck Mark! You are one
GREAT DESIGNER!
Wina on September 6, 2011 at 11:18 am
Belt/smelt!! Was he ever once not among the most innovative? Meg's green was just as horrible as his argyle..she is no better than your average small town design person..Mark is cutting -edge,creative,interesting,appealing photogenic, and has never failed to have something cool to show us. Hope to Pete Karl wins since he,at least, is a really good designer !
Songgal on September 6, 2011 at 12:11 pm
I was rooting for Mark also & looked forward to his work each week. But this was not his best challenge & I agree that belts could have been used for storage as well as design. But if they judged from the entire season & not this week's camera challenges, he should not have been the one to be cut. Hopefully like Todd, he'll get his show. Karl is getting better on camera so if chosen, I may watch his show though I haven't seen any innovative ideas come from him. He probably makes the judges comfortable since I don't see much daring or new ideas from Genevieve or Vern & Candace uses great products beyond my budget. I like new ideas- David, Antonio & Novogratz, can we please bring John Giddings back INSIDE a home, he was great on Design to Sell. Meg has a great camera personality but if I moved into a home with one of her room, it would be changed as soon as the moving truck was unpacked. I can watch non-design shows for personality & stories. I'm watching HGTV for design.
Kat on September 9, 2011 at 12:37 am
I was rooting for Mark from day one. He has that star quality. I wasn't overjoyed with the belt idea but everything else looked great. Doubt if I'll watch Design Star from here on out b/c I don't think the remaining two have the appeal for their own show. But good luck to them anyway….
Kayla G. on September 6, 2011 at 11:29 am
I agree with you 100%. Mark has all the qualities I would want to watch on a design show. His designs were sophisticated and professionally implemented. Meg and Karl look like deer in headlights on camera and their designs sloppily done. The judges blew it. I too won't be watching the rest of the series.
Kathy on September 7, 2011 at 12:05 am
Amen to that!! Mark was the best all season..bring him back ! Is Design Star based on one down day? Poo on th judges !!
Songgal on September 6, 2011 at 11:54 am
I looked forward to watching Mark on Monday nights – his style was so rich looking. He has the eye for design. PLEASE GIVE HIM A SHOW – he does make you want to get off the couch and watch him. PLEASE BRING HIM BACK.
Smitty on September 6, 2011 at 7:33 pm
I think Mark should have gotten to stay, and Karl go home. Karl reminds me to much of Bromstad the first design star, and I don't was my time watching his show "color splash" any longer. Karl is in that class. I am happy that he already has a successful career as a designer, I wouldn't watch Karl on tv each week. I would have watched Mark, unfortunately he didn't make the final 2. My vote would go to Meg now, all though a little bubbly personality goes a very long way. I don't watch Emily, last years winner, I was voting for her all the way, but then she got her show and it's a flop, and Antonio, oh please, design star hosts get with it, and actually do your job that you are suppose to be doing or let the people who watch HGTV vote for a winner again.
shadoedancer77 on September 6, 2011 at 10:39 pm
I agree, I really thought Mark would win at the end. I was disappointed but I did think that Karl really pulled off the last challenge with style.
Nancy on September 7, 2011 at 5:16 am
I agree with all 8 of you guys. I picked Karl at first, but along the way, probably from his White Box Challenge when he turned that bed into a flying machine, I absolutely fell in love with Mark. He is absolutely adorable, charming, and a sophisticated, risk-taking designer. His rooms were always classy and elegant, and talk about star power. The camera-readiness can be fixed with only a little bit of coaching – the judges and David provided none! It wasn't fair. I think the Design Star producers made a mistake. Mark is the only one of the final three whose show I would watch…
Stefrock104 on September 7, 2011 at 6:32 pm
Hi Bridget, I totally agree with you. Mark was the complete package, great design skills and pleasant to watch on the screen…I couldn't believe they let him go especially taking his entire performance into account…he rocked it – they blew it!
MIke on September 7, 2011 at 7:16 pm
I agree, I thought he had to most creative ideas and is very good with using his imagination.
Flo on September 8, 2011 at 9:08 am
Mark is much easier on the ears than Meg, and the belts are easier on the eyes than that horrible green and yellow. David is so in love with Meg that he can't see past the upside down plants. Too bad.
Kim on September 8, 2011 at 10:18 am
Sad to see Mark off the podium but he did not deliver like the other two designs. The belts were his downfall, he could have spent much more time on space design. Mark will be back tho, they will find some special shows for him as he is just TOOOO creative to let go. Both my grandfather's worked with wood and built antique reproduction furniture and other furniture pieces that my house is filled with, some pieces over two hundred years old. Mark has that talent to work with wood and his pieces will be around long after he is gone. The hand carved eagle from black forest wood from Germany that my great grandfather made in honor of moving to America is still displayed in my office, a magnificent piece of work and when I saw Mark's ability to work with wood he reminded me of the passion to be creative.
ChattiePattie on September 8, 2011 at 12:57 pm
I whole heartedly agree that if they were truly judging by the whole season, Mark should have stayed. While he may not have been at peak camera performance, his personality and ideas were great! He brought a lot to the table, and was so creative. He never threw a pile of pillows on the floor in a landing area and called it good, and we've all seen floating shelves(?!) I want NEW ideas, even if they are a bit risky. Meg is sweet and has a great personality, but she's not the next design star.
Jessica on September 8, 2011 at 2:47 pm
I totally agree. Big disappointment since Mark has creative designs and can complete a challenge without the help of others. Meg has yet to come through when she has to work on her own.
Susan on September 9, 2011 at 8:57 pm

I totally agree with you…he had star potential…a diamond in the rough!
Tracy P on September 11, 2011 at 9:00 am
I'm glad that I'm not on the judges' panel because I like them both! I loved Karl's tiny house and his architectural take on design, I love Meg's idea for Design Crimes and I like both of their personalities.
I remember the final challenge when David Bromstad faced Alice and both were so good but David NAILED the final challenge. He was the winner hands down. I hope net week will be the same — one of these two great people will nail it and we'll have an undisputed winner!!
robinreader on September 6, 2011 at 11:09 am
I dsagree about David and Alice I really liked her last design.
But I wish HGTV would do like the Food Network/Cooking Channel- take the promising second placer and give them a show too.
Nebraska on September 8, 2011 at 12:15 pm
Meg would be good at Design Crimes, she could design a room & then let a real designer in to identify all her crimes. Or maybe design jail cells to further punish offenders. I hate sounding so mean but I really don't see that she has any more design sense than an average 8th grader.
Liz on September 9, 2011 at 12:45 am
Hard to believe that Meg is still standing ! Who will watch her??? Her voice is awful and she is not creative enough to me. Mark should have won the event!!
jerry on September 6, 2011 at 11:17 am
Jerry I would agree with you. I would not watch meg. I like Karl better. I hope he wins. Meg did not have any storage in her little house, while the other guys did. She should have been voted off.
Cookie on September 6, 2011 at 12:53 pm
Mark didn't e even paint his house!!!! Those belts and argyle design was awful!!!! You guys have no idea what you are talking about. Meg's design was airy and open! She also had a closet right when you walked in —- STORAGE!
Melissa on September 6, 2011 at 1:45 pm
Yes Melissa is right. Meg had STORAGE – a closet! It was the only closet in any of the 3 houses.
DeeDeePA on September 6, 2011 at 5:22 pm
Too bad she had to steal Karl's design on the loft bed and had the bathroom door right up against the entry door. It would have been better to switch bathroom and closet and install a sliding door for the closet. That way there wouldn't competing entries. And don't get me started about all the other flaws in Meg's space. You don't really want me to give you the laundry list.
guest81 on September 6, 2011 at 5:25 pm
I totally agree with you. Meg's confidence to too much and her voice would drive me crazy. Karl or Mark were my two favorites! The judges didn't notice the paint on the windows of Megs house and how you like to be in that bath when someone opened the door!
HGTV Lover on September 6, 2011 at 1:48 pm
I agree! I am not watching the final episode because I wouldn't watch a show from either Karl or Meg. How can they say Karl wasn't nervous?? It is always so hard to watch him on camera; I just feel bad for him. Mark had the BEST ideas and was acutally interesting to watch; he was so innovative! Sad to see the best designer is gone! If Mark hosts a show, I'll watch it-sorry Meg and Karl!
Anna on September 6, 2011 at 10:24 pm
This is how I felt the season they let Todd go and now look at him, he has his own show. I love to watch his creativity and personality. They all can't be the Number One person but that does not mean they don't have something to offer, I can't wait to see Mark again, too, he will be back I am sure.
ChattiePattie on September 8, 2011 at 12:30 pm
Well said. I totally agree with you.
ChattiePattie on September 8, 2011 at 12:26 pm
Absolutely right about Mark! Can't stand Meg's voice and Karl is too whiney (blah, blah, blah)!
Bedstuy Barbara on September 8, 2011 at 2:49 pm
Yes I agree. Meg is hard to watch. She just skated by and now is in the final episode, how did that happen? They need better judges or something. I won't watch her. I really liked Mark, and I think he should be in the final show. His house was had better function than Meg's. Her house reminded me of a kid's playhouse. Karl has a good eye for design. I think he sould win – hands down over Meg !!!!
Karen on September 11, 2011 at 10:26 pm
I liked all three, so I'd have been disappointed with whoever went home, but someone had to! In this case, I think they were right with Mark. He had the weakest of the spaces, and his camera challenges were sub-par. I like Meg and Karl, and their show ideas, quite a lot as well. I want them both to knock it out of the park and make the judges' jobs hard.
BuffaloBarbara on September 6, 2011 at 11:20 am
I agree. the most negative thing about Mark was that he was very disorganized. he was constantly behind the eight ball with his creations. He seemed to get stuck on one aspect of his design and then freak out about getting the whole thong done. Karl is the most knowledgable and most creative. his final creation is always right on. Meg is good and she has a good personality but Karl is the better one.
Marci on September 7, 2011 at 5:16 pm
Gee, I live in the Windy City and I am so PROUD that the final two designers are from CHICAGO!!!!!!
Good luck to both of you (although this already has been won by now). You have made your hometown
thrilled with your creativity and design. Previous years were filled with drama, whining and cat fighting.
This year, was filled with TALENT and great ideas!!! Thanks to all the designers and HGTV for bringing
back the kind of show, that all of enjoyed watching. Save silliness for the catty reality tv shows. I am sticking
with HGTV!
wina on September 6, 2011 at 11:22 am
Would be nice if either of their shows was set in Chicago-land wouldn't it? We used to have two HGTV shows here but the leads were not strong enough to hold the viewers
qmanik on September 9, 2011 at 6:32 am
Sorry, David, Meg can't sell me anything. I find her camera work annoying. She is too hyper and not at all natural. And Mark got sent home for the belts which were a poor idea. They had not purpose and didn't add anything to the design. If Meg wins, it will be another Design Star I don't watch. David, you are the only one I bother to watch. Karl, I will give a try.
Betty on September 6, 2011 at 11:24 am
Seriously, does ant one really watch Emily from last year? What are the judges thinking? Will not watch the final. Karl definitely a great talent..mundane Meg not so much. Mark was The most innovative and interesting. Who thinks he is worse on camera than Karl..really? They lost this viewer. Bye bye.
Sandym on September 6, 2011 at 12:01 pm
What was interesting about Mark??? He had NO personality. At least Meg has personality! I like Karl as well.
Graham on September 6, 2011 at 1:47 pm
I LOVE Emily!!! She is way better at designing than David B. His designs are awkward and too over the top for a real functioning household to run. Emily gives functionality and style with a cute, quirky personality.
P.S. NO ONE CARES if you or other viewers are going to watch the final show. It won't bring Mark back or keep Meg or Karl from having their own show. You are the one going to miss out.
Laura on September 6, 2011 at 2:00 pm
It's ok to have variety on HGTV and not everyone has to like all the shows. That's what different taste is all about. Both Emily and David B. have their following and have their 'gift's they bring as designers. That's cool and I can respect that. But let's be real, Meg lacks this quality and no matter how much you or she wants to talk us into believing that she is, let me just say:
SHE IS NOT. NO. NAY. NEGATORY. NEIN. DON'T THINK SO.
And I'm SURE I won't miss anything on Meg's show (if she gets 1) because there's nothing new about anything she has done yet! Not to mention she copied Karl's loft bed design.
But let's say this was all forgivable.
She DID NOT have a functional space. At the very least have a functional space!
1) Her bathroom door competed with her front entry door.
2) Her ladder to the loft bed area was not user-friendly and looked like a book case. (which is sad bc it would have made a nice bookcase but ALL YOU CAN DO IS STARE AT IT EMPTY SINCE THERE'S NO OTHER WAY UP TO THE SLEEPING AREA.
3) Her stolen idea of a loft bed was not big enough for a grown up to sleep in.
4) The built in shelves did nothing to provide additional storage.
5) AND she hung plants upside down! Who does that? Really?
6) No ONE, single comfortable space to sit in with all that 'airy' space she created. Not one!
No, thank you. There is nothing I will miss if I don't watch Meg's show.
If I want entertainment I have 200 other channels that can provide me with that.
pissedoff on September 6, 2011 at 2:47 pm
wow maybe you should be one of the judges coz you got them all excellent observations well maybe because yours are not phony ..they're real and you help lots of the viewers to see more of Meg's flaws .. but they chosed her over Mark with the belts ..just the belts I feel sorry for Karl being a very talented designer to compete with Meg no need to say why
designcrime101 on September 7, 2011 at 6:36 pm
Agreed! Meg moves her body soo much. Her arms are all over the place. Not a fan of her. I don't care who wins now; I was voting for the good designer (and the TV host people would actually watch). We'll miss you Mark!! I know we will see him soon though; he's too good not to be picked up by someone.
Anna on September 6, 2011 at 10:28 pm
oh moving her body so much is infectious, energetic, engaging she can even grab viewers from their seats all the judges and even David B wowed on her camera challenges remember ? in my simple words I call it SUPER HYPER
angry bird on September 7, 2011 at 6:41 pm
Emily is soooooo annoying!!!!! What i dislike the most is the format of her show and the geeky "your style is… Urban, Greco, modern, antique, traditional…." whatever!!!! Can't stand the flipping from one design to another design. never watch he r-oh, and I hate her voice. I like Karl.
Marci on September 7, 2011 at 5:23 pm

Bethany on September 6, 2011 at 8:37 pm
I totally agree, I am not impressed with Meg or her designs.
Nancy on September 7, 2011 at 5:18 am
Meg should have been eliminated in the foyer challenge when she couldn't hang a row of lanterns in a straight line, and when she couldn't do anything with the loft above the foyer–didn't even finish it. It was a mess and even she was surprised that she wasn't eliminated. Add to that her scratchy voice and I don't know who will be watching her show if she wins–not us anyway.
Daisy on September 7, 2011 at 7:36 pm
Hey David, would you consider doing a tiny house design? This concept is intriguing and I would love to see your take!
Snapdragon on September 6, 2011 at 11:29 am
Do you remember David's glass house in his final episode of Design Star 1? Zen was the word I remember the judges used over and over. But you're right, I, too would like to see David's end result.
KCMary on September 8, 2011 at 6:17 pm
Karl's design for this small rustic space was awesome. This is supposed to be a tiny house that people will live in and I think that Karl hit the mark. A eating area that can be a prep area and office space with space for office supplies, how awesome is that! Loved the big mirror and the overhead bed and storage areas. I liked the color in there too.
Barbara on September 6, 2011 at 11:32 am
I was surprised at the appeal of Karl's tiny house. When they opened the door it was really inviting. The house also had purpose. Meg's reminded me of a playhouse for children.

I was rooting for Mark from day one. He has that star quality. I wasn't overjoyed with the belt idea but everything else looked great. Doubt if I'll watch Design Star from here on out b/c I don't think the remaining two have the appeal for their own show. But good luck to them anyway….
I agree with you 100%. Mark has all the qualities I would want to watch on a design show. His designs were sophisticated and professionally implemented. Meg and Karl look like deer in headlights on camera and their designs sloppily done. The judges blew it. I too won't be watching the rest of the series.
Amen to that!! Mark was the best all season..bring him back ! Is Design Star based on one down day? Poo on th judges !!
I looked forward to watching Mark on Monday nights – his style was so rich looking. He has the eye for design. PLEASE GIVE HIM A SHOW – he does make you want to get off the couch and watch him. PLEASE BRING HIM BACK.
I agree, I really thought Mark would win at the end. I was disappointed but I did think that Karl really pulled off the last challenge with style.
Hi Bridget, I totally agree with you. Mark was the complete package, great design skills and pleasant to watch on the screen…I couldn't believe they let him go especially taking his entire performance into account…he rocked it – they blew it!
I agree, I thought he had to most creative ideas and is very good with using his imagination.
Mark is much easier on the ears than Meg, and the belts are easier on the eyes than that horrible green and yellow. David is so in love with Meg that he can't see past the upside down plants. Too bad.
I totally agree. Big disappointment since Mark has creative designs and can complete a challenge without the help of others. Meg has yet to come through when she has to work on her own.
true!!!
I totally agree with you…he had star potential…a diamond in the rough!
I dsagree about David and Alice I really liked her last design.
But I wish HGTV would do like the Food Network/Cooking Channel- take the promising second placer and give them a show too.
Meg would be good at Design Crimes, she could design a room & then let a real designer in to identify all her crimes. Or maybe design jail cells to further punish offenders. I hate sounding so mean but I really don't see that she has any more design sense than an average 8th grader.
Hard to believe that Meg is still standing ! Who will watch her??? Her voice is awful and she is not creative enough to me. Mark should have won the event!!
Jerry I would agree with you. I would not watch meg. I like Karl better. I hope he wins. Meg did not have any storage in her little house, while the other guys did. She should have been voted off.
Mark didn't e even paint his house!!!! Those belts and argyle design was awful!!!! You guys have no idea what you are talking about. Meg's design was airy and open! She also had a closet right when you walked in —- STORAGE!
Yes Melissa is right. Meg had STORAGE – a closet! It was the only closet in any of the 3 houses.
I totally agree with you. Meg's confidence to too much and her voice would drive me crazy. Karl or Mark were my two favorites! The judges didn't notice the paint on the windows of Megs house and how you like to be in that bath when someone opened the door!
This is how I felt the season they let Todd go and now look at him, he has his own show. I love to watch his creativity and personality. They all can't be the Number One person but that does not mean they don't have something to offer, I can't wait to see Mark again, too, he will be back I am sure.
Well said. I totally agree with you.
Absolutely right about Mark! Can't stand Meg's voice and Karl is too whiney (blah, blah, blah)!
I agree. the most negative thing about Mark was that he was very disorganized. he was constantly behind the eight ball with his creations. He seemed to get stuck on one aspect of his design and then freak out about getting the whole thong done. Karl is the most knowledgable and most creative. his final creation is always right on. Meg is good and she has a good personality but Karl is the better one.
I am sticking
with HGTV!
Would be nice if either of their shows was set in Chicago-land wouldn't it? We used to have two HGTV shows here but the leads were not strong enough to hold the viewers
Seriously, does ant one really watch Emily from last year? What are the judges thinking? Will not watch the final. Karl definitely a great talent..mundane Meg not so much. Mark was The most innovative and interesting. Who thinks he is worse on camera than Karl..really? They lost this viewer. Bye bye.
What was interesting about Mark??? He had NO personality. At least Meg has personality! I like Karl as well.
If I want entertainment I have 200 other channels that can provide me with that.
wow maybe you should be one of the judges coz you got them all excellent observations well maybe because yours are not phony ..they're real and you help lots of the viewers to see more of Meg's flaws .. but they chosed her over Mark with the belts ..just the belts I feel sorry for Karl being a very talented designer to compete with Meg no need to say why
Agreed! Meg moves her body soo much. Her arms are all over the place. Not a fan of her. I don't care who wins now; I was voting for the good designer (and the TV host people would actually watch). We'll miss you Mark!! I know we will see him soon though; he's too good not to be picked up by someone.
oh moving her body so much is infectious, energetic, engaging she can even grab viewers from their seats all the judges and even David B wowed on her camera challenges remember ? in my simple words I call it SUPER HYPER
I AGREE COMPLETELY! I won't watch Meg- I find her so annoying. They say she is a great host and good on the camera, but I don't buy it. She is just irritating.
I totally agree, I am not impressed with Meg or her designs.
Hey David, would you consider doing a tiny house design? This concept is intriguing and I would love to see your take!
Do you remember David's glass house in his final episode of Design Star 1? Zen was the word I remember the judges used over and over. But you're right, I, too would like to see David's end result.
I was surprised at the appeal of Karl's tiny house. When they opened the door it was really inviting. The house also had purpose. Meg's reminded me of a playhouse for children.
I would love to watch Karl's show and he doesn't win…Karl, you can come to my house anytime!
