David on the Finale: “Can You Handle This Moment?!”

David on the Judging Panel

David dishes on what it was like to be in the elimination room while the judging panel deliberated. Plus, why his heart was beating “1000 times a minute” and what is “the golden ticket for fabulous.”

What did you think of the season finale? Did you think the right designer won out? Tell us in the comments below.

  1. I'm heartbroken. Here was a chance for HGTV to have a host with some depth. Instead you chose bubbly verging on raucous.

    • maybe they choose poor designers to win on ds because they don't want the winner's show to be too successful and become real competition for their own shows.

      • I've said the same thing on a prior blog…I think the judges should be outside people who don't have their own HGTV shows.

    • I so agree….I can't see myself ever watching Meg.

LynnF on September 13, 2011 at 3:30 pm
    • I Agree! They made a big mistake. I was looking for quality design. I will never watch Meg's show.

    • I have not been a Meg fan, but I actually thought she did better in the finale. I was so disappointed in Karl's room. The armor looked ridiculous, the color scheme was bland, and the small framed photos on the molding were too high up to be seen by anyone. Overall I thought they both did ok, but I really liked Meg's better…… and that surprised me. Every year people threaten not to watch the show ever again if their favorite doesn't win, but then they always tune in the next year. I was surprised when Emily won last year but have enjoyed her show. I think she is doing a good job, and I think we need to give Meg a chance also.

    • I am really sad they chose Meg over Karl, I would so much rather be inspired than called out for a "Crime"? I thought he did sophisticated, inspired work the whole series. Bummer!

  2. Why do they all say the camera loves Meg? I just don't agree with that. I also don't think she was the clear winner, Karl is the better designer.

CorvetteLady on September 13, 2011 at 11:02 am
    • I would have Meg as a friend but Karl as a designer. He is gifted and transforms little spaces into tiny little better spaces. Meg is ho-hum with her designs and she better get someone else to design for her . I hope they get credit.

Ann on September 13, 2011 at 5:42 pm
    • Could it be that the designers, each with their own successful shows watched by millions, might have some insight you don't?

samantha on September 13, 2011 at 8:45 pm
      • Considering what has become of recent DS winners, they don't have much of a track record as judges.

Jojo on September 13, 2011 at 9:02 pm
    • I definately agree. I would have watched Carls shows but will never watch Meg. She doesn"t have his talent and is just plain silly. HGTV judges need to really pay more attention but hey they have other shows I'll still watch.

Linda on September 13, 2011 at 8:47 pm
    • I agree with you. Karl is the better designer.

Lee on September 13, 2011 at 9:35 pm
    • I agree! Karl was consisently the best designer who incorporated the most interesting architectural components into his design, and his thoughtful use of space on the little house challenge was ingenious – much better than Meg's floating shelves … for knick-knacks . . . really??? Also Meg's voice is too rhaspy and annoying to listen to. I, for one, will not watch her show – or Design Star next season.

Pat Perry on September 14, 2011 at 1:05 am
    • I agree. I knew they would play safe. But SO prefer Karl!

  3. I guess you had to follow the party line, David. But choosing Meg as the "better designer" was a big mistake. She turns off as many as she pleases with her camera persona.

Betty on September 13, 2011 at 11:17 am
    • Completely agree, Betty. So many other good choices. They blew it big time.

Emily on September 13, 2011 at 11:45 am
    • She is a big turn-off. I didn't watch for a while because of her.

Linda on September 13, 2011 at 8:48 pm
    • Based on the posts, she turns off more than twice as many as she pleases, including ME.

Penny on September 15, 2011 at 10:52 pm
  4. I agree with the previous comments, my vote was 100% for Karl. He was the better designer and the better host, easy to watch with a good eye for design. What a real shame for HGTV viewers that the wrong decision was made.

karen on September 13, 2011 at 11:21 am
    • I so agree. I so looked forward to what Karl would design each week.. His designs were amazing. Maybe so good the panel was afraid he would upstage them. Only reason I can think for him not winning.

JOnnie on September 16, 2011 at 8:08 pm
  5. I, too, am heartbroken… the finale had a game show feel to it with actors as designers. I was so looking forward to a show with a designer who focused on the work and the client (think Karl or Michael Payne from Designing for the Sexes). I had such high expectations… sigh…

KCMary on September 13, 2011 at 11:22 am
  6. Meg is bubbly. Karl worked really hard to improve the camera challenges. Design Crimes?? Puh-leeze. I'll watch at least once. How many people want to say they've committed a "crime" as opposed to needing some design inspiration?

brightintexas on September 13, 2011 at 11:25 am
    • They already have a show like that on the style channel. What ever it is not like most of these people who win this show are still working.

Humore on September 13, 2011 at 5:59 pm
  7. To be honest, "Design Crimes" reminded me of a skit they would have on Sesame Street (a favorite show of my daughter). The design panel shocked me. Meg is the "girl next door" but she is also the "designer next door" A.K.A…my friends that are good at choosing paint colors, etc. could design as well as she did. No joke. Not one thing she did the whole season inspired me. HELLO>>>how about MARK??? KARL??? Each had numerous inspiring moments. Karl has an amazing designer/architect eye and Mark brings the much-needed male/rustic inspiration to HGTV. WHO is your target audience for Meg? WHAT does she bring to HGTV???? Big mistake, lost opportunity.

Emily on September 13, 2011 at 11:44 am
    • AGREE!! 100 percent Mark and Karl are far better designers than Meg..not to mention how ANNOYING she is when she speaks!! Also agree about hgtv dropping the ball on a more rustic..earthy designer like Mark. Oh well..I happy watching David, Antonio sometimes, curb appeal and Emily..would have checked out Mark or Karl's show..Meg's ideas just don't dazzle me.

Louise on September 14, 2011 at 12:55 am
  8. I didnt watch, have no interest in seeing Meg. What a mistake! Still think Mark should have been there, but hell, please, Meg instead of Karl! Who is gonna watch Meg???? HGTV you really blew it this season, what a bomb!

marina on September 13, 2011 at 11:47 am
  9. If anyone cares at HGTV, a big NO–the right designer did not win. Karl's room was superior to Meg's. Her furniture placement was basic design 101 and seeing the pictures scattered on the wall above the buffet looked terrible. As most people have said, I won't watch her show.
I can only hope that HGTV cancels her show after a few episodes and brings Karl on for his own show.

CA dreamin on September 13, 2011 at 11:58 am
    • I do agree. Karl is the better designer and I hope HGTV offers him a show of his own. He and Mark could be a team. As for Meg, congratulations but her designs are so ordinary and expected. There is no surprise element to it.

jing on September 17, 2011 at 6:26 am
  10. WHAT A LETDOWN…….KARL SHOULD HAVE HIS OWN SHOW SOON…………………….:)
