David on the Judging Panel

David dishes on what it was like to be in the elimination room while the judging panel deliberated. Plus, why his heart was beating “1000 times a minute” and what is “the golden ticket for fabulous.”

  1. Last season Emily won and I could not understand that. Her subsequent shows have not been great, her voice is robotic, and she seems like a total Martha Stewart wannabe. When Antonio won there were many viewers who disagreed, and I was one of them. But I have to say, he has really grown on me and I love his individuality. It seems that Karl, Mark and Meg were all talented, but Mark just lost his mojo in front of the camera. I am happy for Meg and also for Karl because in the end they both deserved to be in the finale, considering their t.v. personas and their design sense. I hope we see more of Karl.
p.s. I am still having nightmares about Cathy! That woman was THE most annoying, grating and confrontational, with zero design sense. Her craziness unnerved some good designers and I think she was responsible for the departure of several promising contestants.

    • Dittos on the comments about Cathy! Very hard to watch. Very abrasive.

  2. I'm a research analyst and by the looks of the number of posts here, if each 12 group of people represented one location/city/town, HGTV has an incredible number of disgruntled viewers. Their rating is going to tank big time.

You should have played fair HGTV! Not nice to try and deceive your viewers.

    • I've thought about it from that perspective as well. I venture to say that for everyone of us that have expressed our outrage and disappointment regarding DS and the neeeeveeer ending HH (and all shows of that type), a million viewers have just permanently switched channels.

      • people are far more vocal when disappointed

        • I agree Marty, and thought the same. I am a Mark/ Karl fan and am disappointed, but don't feel the need to bash Meg. On the other hand, if Karl had been chosen, I know I would have been on here blogging too, and celebrating. So I have to think there would have been more celebratory blogs if she really had a fan base.

        • It doesn't matter if people are being far more vocal.
There isn't enough time in the day for a handful of people to be making all these posts.
Most of these posts went up in one day.
They still represent a demographic and numbers won't be skewed that much.
They will see a significant decrease with this many dissatisfied viewership.

    • Thank you Nelson for an objective and important view. I noticed, too, how far behind Meg trails in the Fan Vote. HGTV used to be my Go To channel but I don't watch it as much any more.

  3. I TiVo'ed the final episode, but after learning who they chose as the winner, I didn't bother to watch. Deleted it. Viewers chose Season One's David Bromstad, an amazing designer. After that, downhill. When Antonio won instead of Dan, I was sick. Dan was amazing. Emily was also not my choice, but did watch a couple episodes. Quickly realized it was not for me. If her show or designs were magnificent, I could tolerate her choppy, halting way of speaking, but I don't like her designs & I don't like the concept of the show. I find the whole thing silly. Telling someone's design taste based on what shoe they like? Decorating a room one way, showing it to the client, then completely undoing & redoing it? Say what? And now this. Meg is a sweet gal, I am sure, but she has nothing new to add to HGTV or my knowledge base. 3 years in a row now that the winner has been a huge disappointment. Doesn't management see a pattern here? This isn't a simple – oh, I would have preferred Karl or Dan. People are angry. How many years has this show been on & how many winners are beloved? One…David. I have watched my last season.

    • They have changed Emily's show, she only does the room once, she explains more, it wasn't a big enough improvement to get me to watch again. I can't get past Antonio's tatooes, his designs just aren't my style. Meg appears to be a nice person, she just isn't a designer. I guess they should call the show "TV Star with a little design talent" because that is what they picked this time.

  4. I would have preferred that Karl win. PLEASE give him a special. We can learn new things from Karl, but we'll just get more of the same from Meg.

  5. Season finale? Overall, a disappointment. I enjoyed watching Karl's segment. His room was modern and the architectural details on the windows were so impressive. I like his calm demeanor on camera. Meg didn't wow me. Her room was "pretty," but it has been done before. The whole blue/brown scheme has been done to death, and she still doesn't know how and where to hang artwork. I consider those amateurish mistakes. I also find her on-camera persona annoying. It's no wonder her voice is raspy: she practically barks when she speaks. She needs to seek help from a licensed speech therapist, otherwise she is going to do irreversible damage to her vocal folds (I said the same thing about Rachael Ray, and she ended up revealing that she sought help from a speech therapist).

Did the right designer win? In my opinion, no. I hope someone else offers Karl a show.

  6. I would definitely watch Karl's show. So creative and inspirational. Please let's see more of Karl's designs. Not interested in design crimes — a negative no-no, for sure. Meg designs are very well done, but too predictable. I was totally flabergasted at the final choice. Why? Why? Why? Previous judging emphasized that the negative needed to go — and yet they thought Design Crimes was the winner???!!! Unbelievable. And just WRONG!

  7. Hope you are proud of yourselves HGTV. You set the tone for how people will react since you showed such lack of care in how you chose a winner. Look at all these posts. Happy now?
Another view lost…awe. Too bad! What you created.

  8. They so chose the wrong designer, Meg is blah, Karl was so fresh. to me HGTV has gone downhill for a while now no good inspiration, they took all the good shows off like Designers Challenge, House Hunters is nothing but re-runs and the International house hunters becomes too much. I have stopped watching so much anymore and I really didn't like David B when he got his show nor none of the others that have been chosen so I will probably not watch Design Star next season, I can find better things to do with my evenings!

  9. @cyn…

The problem with Antonio's "win" is…. he didn't WIN… he sucked on design star.

As I commented on the blog at that time, if HGTV wanted a grittier, different type of host… just hire him for God's sake… he used to work for Candice. Don't put him on a design competition and keep moving him forward (as with Meg) when he was clearly not the most talented designer….

That is what is pissing the viewers off… the whole sham of a design competition when the least talented designer wins in the end.

caroln on September 13, 2011 at 2:50 pm
    • How do you know that Antonio used to work for Candace? I'd be interested in seeing that info, because she was his biggest fan at the judges' panel and I could not figure it out.
