David on the Finale: “Can You Handle This Moment?!”

David on the Judging Panel

  1. I dunno, David, I like your show but that gold jacket——–whew!!!!! It's "Color Splash" gone wrong. YIKES!

MEG: I liked the blue color, but it isn't Tiffany blue as requested. (Shades of "I know he wanted bunk beds, but I know better…" signed, Kellie). Also the Buddha perched on the table looked dangerous considering the couple was soon to have a new baby. Was it secured to the table or wall somehow?

KARL: That was a weird room you had to work with. I'm not sure anything would make it look cozy. The Armoire was too white—it stood out — but, too much, IMO. Perhaps the graffiti could have been in pillows or wall art—on the armoire it looked kind of messy. But, I really liked your personality and presentation.

    • It was the painted staircase. He should have just left the writing and no painted staircase in the background. Maybe just painted another texture for a backdrop to frame the words for a backdrop would have sufficed. The staircase is what made it seem a bit odd. But I like his different overall! He sure knows how to tie it all together in a room. It was exquisite and warm! He made it look grande and inviting all at the same time.

      • The staircase was strange. Just an oddball room—but there are no brownstones here in my midwest city, so maybe that type of living room is de rigueur for NYC. :-)

Perry on September 14, 2011 at 1:59 pm
        • Actually I looked at the room again and it's really beautiful.
I wouldn't change a thing. Karl nailed it with this challenge.
Something about the way they showed it on TV was off.
It looks much better in photo shots.

I live Harlem NYC and yes. There are some very big brownstones here.
Many held their original architecture and has a quite the sub-urban charm in an urban setting with its high ceilings and lofty spaces inside. But many had been run down and needed restoration that has been done now. But because like many old homes, they built small rooms with awkward layouts so sometimes it's a hit or miss when you are trying to take out and open up the living space.

I suspect the space that Karl did were actually 2 to rooms with the staircase sectioned off with a wall to the entry way. Looks like they took all the walls down on the second floor too by the stairs which would have been also sectioned off originally.

  2. This is the last straw. I've lost all respect for Vern, Candice and Genevieve with their winner selection this year. First, Dan Vickery from two seasons ago, has more talent than any of the designers from this year and they chose Antonio instead. This year Karl had more talent than any of the other contestants and definitely deserved to win. Apparently HGTV doesn't really want another designer on their network – they just want some "over the top" personality that polarizes viewers in hopes of a big ratings score. Well guess again, that's not going to happen with Meg. Aside from her annoying habits and voice, Leslie and Kellie bought most of the furniture and it was their styling that saved the room. What did Meg do? She bought a rug, then when it was placed in the space, it looked terrible and she had to go get another one to avoid committing a design crime herself.

Here's a suggestion for next season – if there is one. Instead of the designer challenges, just have all the contestants on stage and see who has the best comedy routines, who can juggle 5 vases at once and who can rip out carpeting the fastest and see who is the most entertaining. Whether they have any real design skills is at the bottom of the list.

    • Let David host that. He's certainly dressed for the part. :)

    • The only real designers have been David Bromstad, Dan Vickery and Karl. HGTV blows it every year. For what? I don't get it. Antonio has been my least favorite "winner"… until now.

Lynn on September 14, 2011 at 11:33 pm
      • I liked Dan a lot. He was really talented too. I know Antonio is not everyone's cup of tea but he can hold his own when it comes to designs (if you can get past the tattoos and the grunge look). He also seems pretty down to earth and generally a nice guy. I don't watch his show all the time, but I do catch it on the fly and I always learn something new from his show.

The thing is I can see where the judges were going with picking Antonio – a straight and edgy male designer (who actually has some skills and talent to call his own).

But Meg? Really? No design skills dammit! How can you be a DESIGN Star with such haphazard skills? I have not seen the likes of Meg ever as a winner on Design Star. All the other winners surpass by far, even if they weren't my choice.

  3. CATHY'S RECPETION ON THE FINAL SHOW WAS RATHER COOL……I DON'T THINK ANYONE WAS HAPPY TO SEE HER.

DAN on September 13, 2011 at 3:06 pm
    • AGREED! The thought of Cathy possibly being the new "Design Star" was enough that I was ok with Meg winning, even though I was cheering on Karl!

Margaret on September 13, 2011 at 5:10 pm
      • I kept waiting to see Cathy start neighing…poor thing!

Lynn on September 13, 2011 at 5:21 pm
  4. Maybe this is the design personality show. Vern, Genevieve, Candace and David were disappointing. Individually they are so talented, so bland together. Maybe there was more discussion but it just didn't make it to the show. Hope for Karl. After all, Todd Davis is back on the air. He lost to Emily :)

brightintexas on September 13, 2011 at 3:09 pm
    • I think Todd lost to Kim Myles. And Todd's new show is much better than Kim's ever was.

Steve on September 13, 2011 at 3:12 pm
    • No, Todd lost to Jennifer. Her show never made it..
Michael lost to Emily. However, Casey, who finished after Michael, has a show now.
Maybe there is hope for Karl.

Lily on September 13, 2011 at 4:44 pm
      • No the first person to answer was correct. Todd lost to Kim Myles and, I believe her show is gone or only shown in the wee hours.

Connie on September 13, 2011 at 5:07 pm
    • No, He lost to Kim and Kim,s show was so boring and dry, not a single creative idea at all!

  5. why do we bother posting our comments? IF HGTV even reads them (I highly doubt that they do), they surely just laugh about it. They surely don't act as if they ever cared. Maybe this is their way of getting rid of viewers (not smart, but might be their intent). Daytime drama (soaps) did the same thing when they changed many of their soaps to cheaply produced programs that only upset the viewers then they eventually cancelled them. Just look how HGTV has cancelled countless programs that many viewers tuned into the network to see. I personally don't believe they should even be called HGTV because they are only focused on BRAVO-like network production anymore.

  6. I love Vern Yip. I love Genevieve. Watched them both since Trading Spaces. And I respect them both as great designers. But Vern had it wrong the two best designers were not up there. Kellie by far has the best design eye of the whole group. She just faltered at the wrong moment. Meg skated because her big oopsies came earlier in the season. My opinion … Mark and Karl were equally good designers. Mark struggled with perfectionism and the camera challenges. Karl matured into a good camera presence. Meg is bubbly and good entertainment. (Sorry, but the voice somehow grates on me). The final four was correct, but Kellie blows the others away. Great design sense. Great camera personality. Easy to watch. A real Design Star.

  7. One other thing I noticed. Earlier in the season, when they did the wedding reception, Meg was called out by the judges for dissing the client on her camera challenge when she called their room selection "BORING!". Yet now, they see fit to reward her with her own show called "Design Crimes" which essentially berates and trashes the client into thinking that their styles are criminal in nature in need of correction? How hypocritical can the judges be!!

Steve on September 13, 2011 at 3:25 pm
    • Didn't you hear David? He said it's easier to bring someone down a notch than to bring someone up a notch on camera. Isn't it all the same if you have to re-tape a shot because they didn't get it right? What a ridiculous statement to justify their decision.

sadie on September 13, 2011 at 3:37 pm
    • This is television. Producers are always trying to create tension. They believe it sells.

Lily on September 13, 2011 at 4:48 pm
    • If you look at the end of the show, Meg's new show is NOT design crime's which, I agree, was a diss to the client, but is called Great Rooms.

Connie on September 13, 2011 at 5:09 pm
  8. I think Karl was the best DESIGNER! Meg is a good decorator, and her voice grates- I won't be watching her show!

Diane Silver on September 13, 2011 at 3:30 pm
  9. I recorded this because I knew they would not make the right person the winner. Meg voice drives me crazy and she was not the best designer..Most of her designs were bad. No storage in the little house and Karl's was great. But again this is the show that pick Antonio and he last design was horrible and I do not even bother watching his show. And the blond after him that one and has a show designer secrets or something like that..her show is really bad to me a lot of waste of money and time. They have not got it right since David. And I am not really liking him in Miami all the house are just too much. He is such a great designer. I would have watched Karl show but since her voice is so bad and her design not good to me at all – I will not be watch yet another show on HGTV.

Cin on September 13, 2011 at 4:02 pm
  10. I'm very disappointed Karl didn't win, but I knew they would pick Meg based on HGTV's marketing. Donna Desecrates Dallas, Dina's Big Fat Guido Party, this is where they are going.

CharlesD on September 13, 2011 at 4:07 pm
    • Haha…I don't like either one of those new shows, but I did like the new show following Design Star, except for having to listen to Bloated Bob, and watch all those extras parade around the spaces.

      Mark G on September 13, 2011 at 6:11 pm
      • Charles & Mark- I think you are on to something. Either the host –or–the design has to be bloated. The guy from Nashville was bustin out of his vest and Meg could vie for Nutra Systems when Carrie Fischer melts away. And the shows with the slimmer hosts go bloated with their decor—over the top, obvious and loud rooms that unfortunately leave nothing to the imagination. I'm glad I'm not the only one to cringe when Donna & Dina strut their stuff.
