  1. I'm so dissapointed with the results this year. It was a pleasure as a viewer to watch Karl ( a spectacular designer and space planner) grow into such a warm, knowledgable and confident host. His designs have been wonderful from the start. Meg seems more like a interior decorator then an interior designer, made poor and impractical choices at times. I tried to view her as bubbly, but all I see is brash. I hope and pray that the powers to be will appreciate Karl enough to also offer him a series or special. Even though he didn't win, he is definitley a winner in this viewers eyes!

    • Totally agree

    • Totally agree! Meg seems like a nice person but I will not watch her show. I will miss seeing the work of both Mark and Karl!

      They made a big mistake!

    • I have to disagree. I love Meg. She has such a bubbly, bright personality and fun design aesthetic.

    • I agree with everything you said twofold.

      • HUGE mistake to let Meg win but I"m sure they had their reasons….time will tell and Karl will survive this! He is just to brilliant for the likes of them all!

  2. sure, meg has a bubbly personality, but truthfully, sometimes HGTV has too much high-energy hosting. karl is laid back, and a much better speaker than meg. he does not use the word "guys" incessantly like she does (tamika, take note). i think losing karl was a big mistake…

  3. I am unable to open the video. Anyone else having that problem?

caldreamin on September 13, 2011 at 12:17 pm
    • YES!!! And the previous one would only play for a few seconds and then shut off…

    • I still can't view it from the blogs, but it does open from the videos link.

      • Hi all,
The video should be working now. Thanks!

  4. I can't view Emily's vlog, either. I liked both pilots, and really wish there were a way for them both to be part of HGTV – I liked Karl's architectural slant. I hope they bring him back in the future, and I wish Meg luck with her show.

    • Hi Linda,
      The video is working now.
      Thanks!

  5. Karl must have his own show. He's got too much talent, and so much to teach, to just disappear. His easy going style is refreshing to watch.

    d'artanian on September 13, 2011 at 12:38 pm
    • Unfortunate decision. This was HGTV's opportunity to step it up a bit and use Karl's architectural inspiration to get people involved with design beyond fluffy pillows, the perfect pattern, or this mellow subdued trend. Karl could have taught us about style and influences the motivate generations and also get people involved in the community with restoration projects that define our small towns and big cities. Way to dumb it down HGTV.

      • Karl's style is just that – Meg's is not.

Barb on September 13, 2011 at 2:49 pm
    • Absolutely…the judges got it wrong this time

Barb on September 13, 2011 at 2:50 pm
  6. I agree. Karl would have provided some depth. But maybe dumbing down sells better. (:

  7. So disappointed in the judges choice. Carl was the right choice, he is a better designer and his work was always elegant. I loved the idea for his show, Inspired Design, it was a great idea and he did a really good job on the pilot. I have a hard time watching Meg, her speech is hard to listen too and she is actually way too bubbly for me. I found him to be charmingly low key and much easier to watch. This is a loss for HGTV, I hope someone, somewhere sees Carl's promise and makes him an offer. I'm sorry Carl, this time the best mad didn't win.

LynnF on September 13, 2011 at 3:29 pm
    • Yes – so true.

Annette on September 14, 2011 at 10:37 am
      • Absolutely….Karl will go much farther than Meg. I wish her well with the show, but not sure how she couldn't know all this is being said. I'd be in tears!

  8. I am very happy Meg won but Karl was great too. Meg has a real eye for design. Everything she did looked very balanced. Karl's room in the finale was nice but lacked some balance I thought. They were both perfect for the final. I bet they will use Karl later in something. He has such a great personality and his idea incorporating architecture and design is good. Meg has a great personality and I think people can relate to her ideas easily. It was a great final competition. What a great lineup HGTV has now with the addition of Meg and maybe Karl too.

Emily I love, love, love your show!!!!!!! Your rooms are always so great and full of ideas. You, Sarah, Candice, David, Vern and John are my favorites.

  9. Go back and look at the white box challenge. That's the purest test of design skill — it's a completely even playing field. Meg's design was a mess. To quote Candice's blog: "Knocking the coffee table over at the last second was the least of her problems." To me, it looked like a grade-schooler designed it. To judge Meg as the design star after producing this was a travesty.

Karl's white box design seemingly didn't have the wow factor that Tyler and Mark did, but it looked finished. To quote Candice's blog again: "With the exception of his take-out container light fixture, Karl played it pretty safe." But look at it again. Karl's inspiration was the painting style of Piet Mondrian, as he later stated in his blog http://www.karlsponholtzdesign.com/blog. Even I noticed the Mondrian style, and I'm no artist, but none of the judges picked up on it. But there's more. Unlike Doug's homage to Keith Haring, which basically just copied Haring's work, Karl re-interpreted Mondrian's style and wrapped the Mondrian grid into three dimensions to include not just walls but pieces of furniture bisected by different colors. A 3D Mondrian? Wow! Like all of Karl's work, it was fully thought out and sophisticated. Unfortunately, too subtle for the judges.

Final point: what is the point of the camera challenges with no retakes? With the exception of the reveal, which you can't retake (or it would be totally fake), on a real show anything else can be re-shot. The no-retake camera challenges prove nothing and should be eliminated.

  10. the "judging" and the "celebration" were all Hollywood…..totally scripted and FAKE! Totally unnatural to see Vern jack-o-lantering
    Sickening
