Ask the Producer: Design Star Finale and Meg’s New Show!

Design Star Crew

Each week, Design Star producer Loren Ruch gives us the inside scoop on the show.  After this week’s finale, he discusses the panel’s final deliberation. Plus, what you can expect from Meg’s new show HGTV’s Great Rooms.

It must have been hard for the design panel to choose between these two talented designers! What made them ultimately choose Meg as the winner?
It was an extremely tough decision because our design panel liked both Meg and Karl so much.  In fact, the deliberation took nearly four hours!  They reviewed all of the camera challenges and design challenges, and ultimately selected Meg as the winner.  Meg and Karl had each won two challenges throughout the season, and then split the win in the tiny houses episode, so it was a very, very even competition all the way around.

What was it like for Meg to meet so many of the HGTV talent right after the win?
Meeting our HGTV talent was a huge moment for Meg. When she said “Oh my God, you’re all real,” it was a true ‘light bulb’ moment.  She told me it was in that moment she realized winning Design Star was a life-changing event!

The original concept for the Meg’s series was Design Crimes. How did that idea evolve into HGTV’s Great Rooms?
If I’m going to be completely honest, HGTV’s Great Rooms is the same show as Design Crimes.  Meg uses her criminology background to investigate the crimes in her fellow Chicagoans homes, and then redesign the spaces to be more beautiful.  This may sound crazy, but I believe that there’s power in words, so instead of focusing on something negative (like the word “crimes”) I’d rather we focus on the positive (like “great”), which is why we changed it to HGTV’s Great Rooms.  “Great” is a double entendre in the show, because not all of the rooms are true great rooms, but they are all GREAT!

When did Meg’s show begin filming?
Meg’s show started to shoot about three weeks after we completed production of Design Star.  She needed to get working on her designs immediately following our finale.  Honestly, she hasn’t slept much since we started shooting Design Star back in March!

Can you give us any clues about what we can expect from Meg’s new show? What did you think were the best on-set moments?
I can say this with 100 percent sincerity – I think that Meg’s makeovers in HGTV’s Great Rooms are some of the biggest and best makeovers that I’ve ever seen on our air.  I truly believe that our viewers will be blown away by the level of talent she displays in this show.  By the way, HGTV’s Great Rooms debuts Saturday at 6pm ET/PT – so set your DVR’s!!  Learn more about Meg’s new show >>

Note:  The picture is one of our entire crew – look at how many people it takes to get a show like this on the air!  I want to take this opportunity to thank the best crew in the business, and the best viewers in the world…we love our HGTV fans!

  1. I've watched Meg's show to date and she is OK. She's still a little hyper, which is understandable. I've liked her designs but there is something off and I can't put my finger on it. Perhaps she's just too enthusiastic? Anyway, I thought at the time she was the best choice, but now I wonder…. if Karl wouldn't have been a better choice. I wonder what the judges think privately.

  2. my two daughters (8.5) & (6), are huge fans of the show Design Star and Meg!

They both watched the show every week, even multiple times in anticipation of the next show.

It was the cutesy thing to watch. They even picked who they thought the winners were going to be every week.

While I couldn’t believe their interest in this more adult show, it showed me how great HGTV has become for the whole family.

My daughters have recently moved out of the house with their mother, due to us getting a divorce….,

They are surprisingly doing really good with the situation, which helps me and my EX wife feel a bit better.

The house that they just moved into has undergone a complete renovation and is really a cute house, and my Ex Wife has done a very good job to make the girls room feel like a new warm home for them, but due to a minimal living budget she hasn’t had the money to really decorate the room the way I know she would really like to for the girls.

The walls are a blank canvas, being painted all white and the windows don’t have any curtains up yet.

I know my girls would absolutely love to have Meg decorate their room for them, but I’m sure there is a very long list of people wanting Megs talent.

  3. I did watch HGTV all of the time but got disappointed when the controversy of "too many gays and lesbians" were on the shows. I have seen a few couples having their homes or rooms redone, the only two host I know of are Vern and David, so what is the big deal? Let's face it, the network has become homophobic and they do not want any competition to their two gay stars, so no other gay can win "Design Star". If you look over the years, the great, talented designer whom is always ends up in second place and should have won, just happens to be gay and therefore, draws many of us gays in to watch only to be disappointed to see the better, talented, more entertaining designer come in second place. Let's face it another gay "Design Star" is not possible due to the networks heads thinking. So I ask all of my brothers and sisters and gay and lesbian supporters to do as I have done and find something else to watch. A word to the wise for prospective gay/lesbian "Design Star" applicants. They only want you to get the ratings for the show but they will not give you a show. Just be honest and state " No Gay/Lesbian need to apply because no matter how good, talented, deserving you are we will not give it to you!" I also will not be watching Kelly's show online either, do not understand her support, poor design and planning and crying all the time, BORING!!!!

  4. I thought Meg was the best choice from the beginning Karl was not a leader and did not do as well on camera.

  8. Am I the only one that finds HGTV's web site hard to navigate? I want to ask Meg a simple question since she uses products and never tell us what she's using (drives me crazy)….

  9. Does anyone know what kind of glue Meg used on the mirror she made with thousands of toys she glued the toys onto a mirror and then spray painted the entire thing white? She partially dipped the toys into a glue and then placed them on the mirror. Is it an epoxy type glue that she mixed up and put on a plate or WHAT did she use? Thanks for any help….I certainly can't ask the question to Meg since they haven't included her in the the line up of hosts. I have Never seen a web site as messed up and as difficult to use as this one is…
