7 Questions With: Britany Simon

I’m counting down to the Design Star premiere on Tuesday, May 29 by featuring seven fun facts and confessions from each of the season seven designers. Next up on the list: resourceful girly-girl and color and pattern fan Britany Simon.
If you got to add one thing to the White House, it would be…
COLOR. From what I have seen on TV and in photos of the White House, it appears to be very very traditional and a little stuffy for my taste. I would definitely love to get in there and give it a more updated contemporary look, and a bit of unexpected color throughout would really perk that place right up.
What is your biggest design regret?
Ugh. I’d have to say my first college apartment was just an epic fail. It was a big deal to me (as it is to any college student moving out of the dorms) but budget was small. I ended up buying a furniture set (ick) with all matching pieces and used an abundance of faux foliage throughout. I cringe a little bit every time I think about it. These are now two things I would strongly discourage anyone from doing in their space. Nothing is more boring than an all matching furniture set, and nothing sucks the energy out of a room more than too much dusty faux greenery.
What’s something no one knows about you? A hidden skill or talent?
Strangely, I am freakishly talented at imitating people’s accents. Sometimes I’m having a conversation with someone who has an accent and without knowing it, I pick it up and start imitating it. It’s a sickness…but sometimes it’s just more fun to speak with a twang, or tell a joke in a British accent.
Celebrity crush?
I am really digging Colin Egglesfield (from Something Borrowed). There is something so charming about him, and those eyes…love. It could also be that he slightly resembles my husband, but whatever it is, I like. A lot.
What color do you hate?
I’d have to say my least favorite color is beige. To me beige = blah. I think I have seen way too many overly beige homes and it seems to be the go to color for those who are afraid of taking the plunge of actually using color in their space. I believe that beige should never be used as your main color inspiration but used as a neutral to complement your overall color scheme.
How particular are you about your home? What is the one spot in the home that is the messiest or least designed?
I am pretty particular when it comes to the design of my own home. The home is a great reflection of who you are, so I think it is important that my home represents me well. For the most part, every room is well thought out, and full of pieces that reflect me and my husband’s tastes and interests. But don’t get me wrong, it gets messy, and yes, it drives me crazy… but my husband and I are busy people. My New Year’s Resolution was to try and make the bed everyday…hopefully I can stick with it all year!

Britany Simon, your portfolio: photo four, painted animals? A contrivance HGTV viewers have seen before, and were seriously hoping that they would never see it again!
Britany, I can't wait to see you on the show! I love everything you have to say and your portfolio is by far the best one up there. Love your glam style, hope I can learn some things and bring it into my own home!
She is an awesome designer and i really cant wait to see the finale tonight and watch her win!!!
I agree with the statement about beige…it gets old.
I want you to win!
Please, please win!! You're the best, Britany!!
Britany, you were robbed! For some reason beyond my comprehension, Danielle was "the golden child" all season. She certainly is self-confident to the point of being arrogant. Her fake goofiness was pretty annoying, as well. I won't be watching her show.
