It’s time for the final installment of 7 Questions With The Season 7 Designers. Today we have Yuki Northington, a designer and mother of four who loves bright colors and eclectic pieces. (She’s also the Design Star fan vote frontrunner!) Read on for Yuki’s design confessions.
How particular are you about your home?
We recently moved, so at this point I have to try to be patient and change things in stages, when I would like it all done NOW. That said, I also have 4 kids, 3 very bad dogs and a cat. I am particular about what goes up on the walls — I prefer nothing to the wrong thing, while my husband would rather have me just “hang up our stuff”!
What is the one spot in the home that is the messiest or least designed?
I’d have to say the kitchen. It sees the most activity, yet needs the most design work! I want to change the ceiling, lighting, cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring, hardware and window treatments!
Lightning round! Yes or No…
Jaccuzi tubs: No to hot tubs (Eww!); Jaccuzi tubs for a bath – YES!
Polished gold: Yes, when mixed with silver.
Dogs on the bed: No! (Again: gross.)
Wire hangers: Yes, better on a wire hanger than the floor.
Taxidermy: No! I can barely eat meat as it is.
What’s something no one knows about you? A hidden skill or talent?
I was the first female mascot for the University of Missouri (Truman the Tiger). Also, I can paint with encaustic wax (beeswax).
Celebrity crush? Dave Matthews, no question about it.
What color do you hate? Fleshy beige
Is there something that you do in every space you design?
I try to add at least one unexpected, “wow” factor — something humorous, personal or just plain amazing!
