David on the Collage: “It’d Look Good…In My Trash Can”

Design Star Host and Mentor David Bromstad

David’s back this season with behind-the-scenes dish from the set.  This week: Hear about behind-the-scenes fights, his favorite spaces and, of course, the collage.

Now it’s your turn: Did you agree with David’s favorites?

  1. The team projects are so unfair. The pushy one always stays and the polite one, who may be a great designer,
gets the boot. Please find a way to stop the team designs—-as you can see they are very unpopular. I agree with the others that the judges should ALL be designers, not just celebrities.

  2. I have to say I definitely agree that the first impression should have been the designers way of showing off what they know!!! Not pairing up with another designer who has completely different taste!! Team projects should never be apart of this show. It doesn't say Design Star for nothing!!! I know Yuki personally, and I have seen her work , and even own a painting of hers. The show did her no justice. She is a very talented person.
I also agree that the only judges that should judge should be professional designers themselves. Daisy Fuentes sounded like she was on meds when she was giving her opinion! Keep the judging to the real designers!!!

    • Too bad they can't bring guest judges in like John Saladino, Rose Tarlow or people with similar clout. Of course the show would have to raise itself a number of notches in quality to attract people of that caliber in the industry.

  3. I find it strange that David is the Host, mentor and dishes gossip at the end. I thought the the Gray living room and the Blue bedroom with the silver headboards were the best designed rooms. Really enjoyed episode 1.

  4. David, what were you thinking? Someone with some taste needs to dress you! You looked rediculous in tight pants and boots. Don't care about seeing your dong filling tight knit pants! Get a grip on the average person's reality. Producer's where are you?

    • A definite fashion miss! I totally agree. A great host, good interior design sense – but that outfit qualified for the worst dressed list!

  5. For all the complaints about this first episode, it was the first one in years that reminded me of when Design Star first started. David was a fabulous host. He reallly brought the energy up and the editing was really about the design and not drama. Thanks for rescueing this show.

  6. I loved this episode! Sure you have the obvious personality clashes, but that is what life and the show is about. Who wants a Design "STAR" that can't take criticism or give their own opinion when tested? These things can't be taught or faked and the partner pairings showcase each of their star potential. Being nice is great and what your mother taught you, but clients aren't nice or tactful- fact. The great room transformation was simply brilliant. I don't know if they could have saved the collage room – it was all a mess to me.

  7. I HATE when they pair designers up – especially in the beginning. The viewers want to see INDIVIDUAL design efforts. And, I wish that the judges could view the behind the scenes "drama" to see who is doing what – it would appear that they do not take any of that into account in their decisions. Keep the "GUEST" judges (miss Candace and her comments) OFF the show and stick to actual designers if you need guest hosts. The people who watch this show and buy products from your sponsors are not interested in flashy names with no substance- we want someone to properly evaluate and intelligently contribute to the judging process. Yes- shows are filmed ahead of time- but if this is the way the season is going to go I will not bother to watch it. . . and I have watched since David won!!! Daisy Fuentes was a waste of time. I suspect having a rapper judge the WHITE ROOM will be even more inane. Everyone at work on Wednesday was in agreement – many of us will watch one more show and see if we can stomach another uniformed guest host added to the mix. (PS We all also agreed that David is a great host!)

  8. Miera will stand out as the clear choice for a new show! We boomers long for shows with maturity and sophistication…in the realm of Divine Design and Sarah's House. SHINE ON MIERA!

  9. I agree with others that they should NOT have a team competition, especially for the first episode. let us see what each of these designers can do. The contestants do need to be able to work with others but last season a LOT of the episodes were team, not individual. Too many chances to be sabotaged by others. Sorry David. You need to lose those tight pants.

  10. As many have previously noted, having a team challenge at the very beginning, if at all, is very unfair. The white box should be the very first challenge with a slight twist injected to make the designers use their creativity…remember David's white box using only pet store products? I'm so glad the contestants were asked to leave the room at final judgement time; last season having the designers there while Vern et al whispered with each other was so rude…and we, the audience, want to hear the bases for the eliminations. And David, you're a handsome guy, but if a stylist picked your outfit, fire him or her…if you did, hire a stylist.
