Episode 3 Recap: Kardashian Office Makeover

This week brought big names and big stakes: Ten designers took on the challenge of designing Kris Kardashian Jenner’s new office space, and only eight made it out unscathed.  Well, mostly.

Design Star Contestants

See the highlights, my favorite moments and biggest pet peeves from this week’s episode of Design Star,  then tell me your take on this week’s action.

Britany and Mikel's Conference Room

Britany and Mikel worked together on the conference room. As guest judge and client Kris Kardashian Jenner said, “I never met a mirror I didn’t like,” and Britany delivered a mirrored installation that wowed.  I have to admit, when she said “mirrored wall” I had horror flashbacks to an ’80s workout video, but I really like the finished look:

Mikel held his own on his second project with Britany. I loved his use of two modern, white tables to create a conference table big enough to seat at least most of the extended Kardashian clan (or is that klan?).

Oh, Kris and Miera. It seemed like their partnership in the reception area was doomed from the start. Miera and Kris fell into a vicious cycle: Kris takes over, Miera cries foul, drama, drama, rinse, repeat.  In the end, they went their separate ways but created a surprisingly cohesive space and they even cozied up a bit by picture time:

The highlights for me were Miera’s striped picture rail (above)and Kris’s glam wallpaper pick:

Next up: Hilari and Danielle. They worked together on the Kardashian kitchen. This seemed like Hilari’s chance to show off her over-the-top glam look, right? Well, I’m still waiting to see it, although she did pick wallpaper that “looked like ice” and literally made Momma Kardashian happy enough to hug the wall. Danielle’s wall stripes were a win with the judges, but she had a near-meltdown over a section of badly-mounted wallpaper in the closet. Hilari helped her mask the area with curtains (which the judges, of course, looked behind immediately) but the last-minute snafu left their space with an unfinished look.

Then there’s Stanley and Rachel, who worked together on Kris’s office. Stanley had a rough go on the first team challenge, but he and Rachel were actually a great match-up.  She convinced him to take a risk with the chartreuse, tufted velvet sofa and chair — and it paid off with Kris and the judges.

Rachel and Stanley's take on Kris's Office

This week, Stanley tried something new with couches: displaying them horizontally! Ha. Seriously, the judges loved his cheesily-titled “diamond tennis bracelet” wall sculpture, and I was a fan of the modern stone desk he created. A solid (if canned) camera challenge was enough to clinch it for Stanley, and the judges named him this week’s winner. Two-time champ Rachel came in a close second.

And then there were two: Bex and Luca in the closet and product feature room. Luca, you should have spent less time talking about your high-end clients and Champagne tastes and more time designing a luxurious room. He was so caught up in not being “Bex’s employee” that he forgot to design anything worth getting excited about — the judges weren’t into his abstract art and thought his island didn’t fit the scale of the room. Bex tried to keep the peace, but she made some bad decisions, too — those hexagonal shelves could have worked, but not with the tiny accessories she threw in at the last second.

In the end, this pair brought each other down, and the judges said goodbye to both Bex and Luca.

Check back tomorrow for Meg and David’s reaction to the episode.

Now it’s your turn: What did you think of the makeover? Did the right designers go home? Tell me your take in the comments below.

  1. OK HGTV no more faux designers and porn star families. Do you really have to stoop so low to get folks on the show? I didn't watch the episode just because the KardASSians were on it, but rather watched it in spite of it.

  2. Nex definitely should not have gone home! Lucas' horrendous "accesorizing" ruined her beautiful showroom! Both Luca and Hilari were by far the weakest designers. They have very little vision and think that buying "classy" junk makes the room. I wish they'd given Bex more time to shine! :(

    • I disagree. Luca was more talented than many on this show. Bex tried to push him around and then showed how tacky she was by her comments to the judges at the end of the show (mentioning finishing a project with Luca was a miracle). Low class Bex. Keep crying about your PVC pipe while Khloe Kardashian will probably contact Luca to do her home with Lamar. Whatever!

    • The best thing about that showroom was the sunken frame wall, which Becky didn't have anything to do with.

On the bright side, now she can return home and continue her lifelong work of cultivating a personality by playing up her love of weird hats.

Wyatt on June 12, 2012 at 8:00 pm
      • The sunken wall frames were Bex.

Liz on June 12, 2012 at 9:17 pm
      • You must have a listening problem because it was evensaid on the show that those were ALL Bex!!!!

NikD on June 12, 2012 at 9:27 pm
        • This isn't the first time Bex has gotten credit for something that was not, in fact, her design. Look at her portfolio- those vignettes from her store were not arranged by her, but from other Abilene designers.

          • you are pathetic for writing this Abigail

          • Designers don't steal people's work for fame. That's what's pathetic

Abigail on June 13, 2012 at 9:58 am
    • Totally agree

NikD on June 12, 2012 at 9:26 pm
  4. Yes I agreed with the judges' picks for dismissal. The waiting room/entry
    outshined the others imho

  6. It was definitely a bad call to send Bex home, she has a lot more talent than Hilary! Given a little more time I think she would have shone…whereas Hilary has not completed any of the 3 challenges with anything that stands out. Her visions don't come to reality. She has a good personality, but not what it takes to be a design star. Bex would have been a far better choice to continue on.

  7. I agree with the two that went home. However, Kris (with Meira) was a show off bully as tho he was such hot stuff. Am suprised that their project turned out so well. Could be Meira was the great influence?

Peggy on June 12, 2012 at 7:13 pm
    • Could be. I mean she didn't let him paint the walls in clown colors lol

jslater on June 13, 2012 at 9:00 am
  8. Kris is such a pain in the you-know-what! I can't wait to see him eliminated.

Suzanne on June 12, 2012 at 7:16 pm
    • ARE YOU KIDDING! It was Miera who was creating all of that snot-slingging drama! The K-family photographs wall installation looked great, but I'd sure hate to work with Miera on any kind of collaborative effort. Talk about ultra sensitive, paranoid, and just downright nasty–ugh!

Pamm on June 12, 2012 at 8:55 pm
      • No Way! Miera was trying to figure out how to deal with Kris the Drama Queen. She brought his design way, way up! Remember last week with the burned out white box challenge? Kris is a weak designer. Miera brings experience and class to her clients.

Heather on June 13, 2012 at 6:01 am
        • If you call ripping off a wall from the elimation stage "experience and class". Does anyone else think the wood picture rails look just like the wall next to the judges? Look closer next time. I'm not a fan of Kris' aesthetic, but I think she was the one being a passive aggressive bully and then crying for sympathy. She was a complete drama queen.

Miera is tired and outdated, and clearly crazy. Did you see how she flips out at Danielle? How she was rude to Jordan?
          Team Danielle all the way!

  9. I enjoyed this episode, what I didn't enjoy was David's wardrobe! What was up with that?

Emy on June 12, 2012 at 7:17 pm
    • I don't know what is going on with David , he looked like Pee Wee Herman tonight. He needs a wardrobe assistant and he needs to listen to their advice…He is so cute, I think he would look nice in a Ralph Lauren collection.

Mary on June 12, 2012 at 9:39 pm
    • So far this season he's completely tacky. And way over spray tanned.

jslater on June 13, 2012 at 9:01 am
  10. Luka's designs belonged dead last again as he is finally sent packing! Only nice moment was the light in the white box challenge and that is not enough. Anyone who doubts that he deserved to go home should have changed their minds when he could not accept the criticism for his awful decisions and instead blamed Bex. It was you alone, Luka. You alone. So happy to see you GONE!!

    tanyacookie2 on June 12, 2012 at 7:19 pm
    • And he then he sat in the back room still blathering on about how much better he was than everyone else! Talk about delusions of grandeur! Glad he is gone!

Pamm on June 12, 2012 at 8:57 pm
    • Luca was this year's Kathy/Nina/Penny. Like the others, he stayed around for a few episodes for the drama and then left.
