David on Episode 5: “Make a Room. No Walls. Good Luck.”

David on Design Star episode five: Who rocked, whose design bored him, and who failed miserably. Plus: who he thought should have won.
Here’s David’s from-the-set take:
Do you agree with David? Who do you think should have won last night? Shout it out in the comments below.

My favorite "designs" come from Stanley and I have been voting for him like crazy, but he hasn't moved up in the polls… I also like Britany, Danielle and Hilari but for different reasons. Hilari has a good "on air" personality, Danielle is sweet and strikes me as someone who would actually listen to her clients and Britany has good designs but the pouting really out me off. Very unprofessional. So happy Kris is gone, he was just downright annoying and fake. Rachel needs to go next and although I like Mikel, his designs have been pretty uninspiring. Next week's previews hint that two designers are going home. That should prove interesting.
I can not imagine how frustrated I would be if I hired Stanley as a designer.
That is too funny! LOL!!
I, too, am glad Chris is gone — he lacked self awareness, among other things. I love Danielle and Rachel, but agree Britany's room was perfection. I suspect the judges gave Danielle higher points for her on camera work, though Danielle's room was pretty amazing, too, and the only one that has really stayed in my mind. I don't know who will win; if personality trumps all, then Hilari. When it comes to actually hiring a designer, I would go with Danielle, or Mikel, or Rachel — because they strike me as the most flexible. Though Rachel sure did blow it on the Victorian — that set she designed could be used in a Victorian horror flick; I don't understand why she made the task so much harder than she needed to; she's got a lot of resistance that she needs to overcome; she blew it with the outdoor challenge last week as well.
Danielle's art deco room was fantastic!! she is a very talented, impressive designer! She does a phenomenal job and is really good in explaining and articulating her work on camera. Glad she won!! brittanny's was really great to but her verbal presentation was poor, so overall Danielle had higher marks!
Barbara….I agree. Plus, Brittanny is a very sore loser. Instead of being woman enough to congratulate
Danielle, she chose to pout like a baby. She has a very bad attitude. I hope Brittany doesn't win. Danielle is a great designer, with class!
How about a design show with two winners..find out who works best together.
Bring back Kim Myles as a judge – I miss her show very much. She's a brillant designer, right up there with David B. I also loke Magee's idea – a show with two winners might be a little less intense?
First of all, I want to scream about how much I not only didn't like Rachel's "modern" Victorian room, I hated it! Then, I really liked Danielle & Brittany's rooms, both about equally. And then I thought Hillari pulled herself out of a mess (after she ditched the spandex rug!) which was impressive. I think that Mikel's mid-century didn't quite work–it must be hard to master all the different style eras, I don't know how people do that. I loved the futuristic metal chairs that Stanley chose, didn't hate the coffee table that the judges were so mad at, but didn't love it either. As for the challenges I don't know. They all seem likeable enough.
I forgot to mention the eliminated, Chris, he did seem rather different in the camera challenges than he did the rest of the time. And his room wasn't very well arranged but I couldn't say why I didn't like it.
Chris had some awesome pieces, then it seemed as if he just picked them up and threw them into the room. The bubble chair hanging too high, the chaise stuck in a corner facing….nothing, the sofa slid over into another corner, seeming to just get "put somewhere." If he had imagined people actually trying to have a conversation in the room, he might have been more successful. And the camera challenge..YIKES! Lift a glass to his departure…..
It looked like he didn't realize that people would be in the room sitting and talking. Look back at the arrangement, and it has no connection to actual use. That's my opinion, anyway.
I think Rachel has failed miserably the last two challenges but for some reason has not been sent home. I think it is strange and unfair to the others, especially the two who were sent home instead. Rachel was far worse!
You are right, of course, but do you think that they are keeping her because of her strong first and second shows??
I think you're exactly right. She had built up credit. But it's all used up now.
This is not so much a comment as a question. Is there any way to view previous seasons? I have only seen the last two…… Thanks!
Right online here. You'll see the seasons listed under the video tab at the top.
-Rachel's portfolio has some random Victorian looking things in some of the rooms so I thought it was weird that she was so opposed to the style. She could have made a great library look or gentleman's club or garden room.
-Kris's room was just way too busy for me – great individual pieces, but they all seemed like little islands. I think he is talented, but David must be right with the "over buy" comment.
-Danielle's room – loved it! That panther, those lamps, that floor, the print – spot on. Sophisticated, Parisian, chic.
-I really liked Brittany's room as well, but I'm kind of bored with Hollywood Regency. I see it all the time on shelter blogs/magazines/random stores. (I think she should have won for the the mirror wall/conference room). Plus her camera challenge was awkward. However, I don't think she was whiny at the end. It's edited as a reality show. I don't care about the manufactured drama part, so I just ignore it.
-And Hilari is a little firecracker. Ditched the spandex rug and didn't look back, just designed the heck out of the space. She made me love the 80s again! Loved all the pieces, thought it all worked together – very cohesive.
Yes, somehow Brittany should not have gotten Hollywood Regency. That is the style she specializes in. For me it was too comfort zoned. Anyone else agree?
Rachael should have definitely gone home. She made a very poor design choice of putting a child's toys next to garbage bins. Plus, she basically designed nothing! Then this week, the sloppy, ugly color blue for her latest challenge was terrible. Why are the judges letting her get away with this? She even looks shocked when she is the one not going home. Kris was the wrong choice to be sent packing. It should have been Rachael. It seems the judges have their favorites and whether they do well or not, they are going to stay.
