David on Ep 6: “It Was ‘Toile-icious’…Not A Good Moment”

David on the “crazy soup kitchen,” plus whose design skills imploded during the “infamous, ego-crushing kitchen challenge.”
See David’s thoughts from the Design Star set:
Do you agree with David’s critique? Which designers do you think deserved to go home? Give your opinion in the comments below.

I don't think David is catty or mean; he's honest and realistic. This is the big time and the designers are all competitive enough to take it. Stanley probably laughed at David waving good-bye. Danielle and Brittany had the best kitchen, hands down (no pun intended). It was the only one that was not one-dimensional; you could feel that kitchen as well as see it. The others had good ideas but their kitchens were not complicated or cohesive enough to really enjoy living in (or looking at). I think Design Star has improved over the last couple of years. I like Genevieve taking the lead; she is confident and strong without being condescending. David is good at everything he does and Vern seem more relaxed and balanced. Good show. My money is on Danielle.
Donna, I agree with you soooo much. I thought David's comment about Stanley's hands was so funny, it was the first time, I really connected with him, and he made me laugh. Thanks David. I also agree with you about Genevieve. I just hope that someday, I get to meet these fantastic people, David, Genevieve, Meg, Antonio, and last but not least, Vern. TV would be so empty without these rock stars! Thanks Genevieve, because I think she keeps things going! A real professional in every sense! And then about Danielle. Although, she is probably the most talented on the show. Brittany is also super talented. I like that she wants to win, and just pours everything into it. My favorite is Hilary. I like that she is so humble, and so honest, and also so talented. It's really up to her because I think if she brings the talent, her camera style and skills are there, but she has to prove she can do it. And Mikel? He is also talented. Thank you Donna for such on target comments. Much appreciated!
I agree with you, too. David is honest and realistic and it's refreshing! Great comment.
Great comment, but you never know…Britany could win out here. And that Hilari…..
STANLEY WAS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR ..I LOVED THAT KITCHEN! Winning kitchen boring!
I completely agree. Not that I would actually want Stanley's design in my kitchen, truly I would prefer the winning kitchen, HOWEVER, the client specifically said go bold. They should have honored that boldness more than they did.
FINALLY!! Design Stars has competitors with REAL talent. The past several years have been disappointing. The winners were were the "best" among a mediocre group. This season reminds me of the one that David won. There was real talent there. There are several competitiors currently whom I would love to have design for me…and I will be glad to watch their show.
I say, for the rest of the season, let each competitor design independently. No more team design. The judges already know who works well in a group. No need to have team design in almost every episode. Now let's focus on skill and camera readiness. It should not be a contest for who has the strongest personality. By now, we all sense who has one. TURN THEM LOOSE TO COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHER, INDEPENDENTLY.
Loren alluded that Bex may return- I think they will have the finalists each choose an eliminated one- HMMM
I have been watching Design Star for as long as I have had access, but for once for once I wish that they would use the designers in real life situations more often. I mean the entire season – there are people who would love to have a new kitchen. When they put the designers in homes, these are homes that the people together make 100k – try a home that their income is 20k. I know call Kitchen Crashers – but really how often would they do 4 homes in a neighborhood? How easy would it be to design a room from scratch The White Room challenge or the Kitchen one, try doing it in a neighborhood where the kitchens are less than 10 ft long and have little space for anything. Think of all of the good it would do to the homeowners who couldn't afford to have a designer come in and revamp their 70's style home that they can never be able to afford to do. I just see so much waste on this show. What happened to the actual kitchens that were designed in this weeks show? Can you just imagine having a homeowner receive all free new appliances? I don't even think they would have cared about the size of the jazz hands hanging on the cabinet doors!
Do you remember in the first seasons when the show did real kitchens? David had to work with a team of people and they did a beautiful job.
That kitchen may have looked good, but I recall the countertop wasn't fastened down and there were gaps in the floor boards. A crew was sent later to fix things. I agree with other posters that I wish real homeowners could get a makeover rather than create model rooms. Too bad that first kitchen challenge had the designers doing the installations that should have been done by professionals.
I thought the same thing about the waste involved in creating these "model kitchens" and other spaces… Certainly there are plenty of people who would love to have the designers work on their homes. It seems to me that in seasons past there were many more "real" space conversions, and a lot more challenges involved working with real homeowners. As far as them not finishing the job when when in a real home, they are giving the designers so much more help this season, all they really have to do is design, rather than execute thier designs, and certainly HGTV can send in a crew to finish if a designer doesn't. With the exeption of Stanley, none of the designers has been built or constructed much of anything, not even a backsplash.
AT least donate the materials used to Habitat for Humanity!
So impressed, yet again, by all the talent.
. And, anyone hiring you as their designer would appreciate your pleasant demeanor and ability to work well with others.
Stanley — you're an amazing and talented artist, and I'm sure that there are now countless people out there who would be willing to commission you to design an original piece of your art for them.
Hilary — you are young, talented, and vibrant. I, too, loved your red countertop choice, and liked the blue with it, though maybe in a living room rather than a kitchen.
Rachel — you might be going home, but you have immense creativity and talent. I just get the sense your biggest challenge is the intense pressure. No worries, you have great talent and originality, and I would hire you in an instant (with lots of time for you to do your best work!).
Mikel — you are immensely watchable, and your creativity and strong design sense are all incredible assets. I wish there were several slots for new design shows, I would watch yours every week.
Britany — such talent, and you were great in your camera challenge (but you know that already
Danielle — you are truly a star. You have exceptional design sense, and you're easily the best in your camera challenges. Yes, you've sometimes made mistakes in some of your design challenges, but you always recover well. I love the colors, textures, and polish.
David — I love your show. I missed your warm, fun personality on this week's episode. Your eye for design is always so strong, and your succinct and sage advice to the designers is an education for me, too.
HGTV — thank you for this amazing show. It's easily the very best show on the channel. I save every episode on my DVR and go back and look at various designs several times thereafter. And I'm now totally sold on Lumber Liquidators lol Please keep shows like this on the network…. and pare back a bit on house hunters. There are a lot more homeowners renovating than there are new buyers, and even more still than new buyers with large sums of cash to spend on reno's when banks are limiting mortgages to purchase only. I hope the channel's editors consider those market realities when selecting shows. Design for the less well off is a theme reflected in many of the comments above, and could easily be incorporated into the challenges on this show, and into other shows to make them more versatile (such as, if you only have $x budget, do these things first, like the paint, flooring, etc. in the various designs.)
I agree, they need to take out the hundreds of house hunters shows and open up more design show slots. Mikel, I adore your personality. I haven't seen you be rude to the other competitors or act like you are better than them. I would watch your show over any others just because of that!
Britany- your designs are awesome
Danielle – flawless
I agree about the budgets: My budget is more of a design on a dime type than any other. I want to see shows that give ideas I can afford to do in my home.
I actually loved the hands idea! However, I wish they would have been functional. I am disappointed though because the client specifically asked for the designers to go bold. What'd ya expect, boring mint green…. oh wait.
LOL! Yes, that color scheme in their kitchen was pretty bland. And that distressed cabinet? I just wanted to paint it and fix it up!
This week's kitchen episode was a little disappointing for me. These were not real kitchens! Does anyone remember the seasons when the kitchens were real and the time elements were crazy? Those designers had to put in backsplashes, appliances, and almost all the surfaces by themselves!? No white box, little carboard space without reality. This is supposed to be a reality show, right? That said, I give a lot of credit to Stanley and Hilari for creativity, but crazy does not win out in design. I agree that Stanley had to go home. Rachel was a big disappointment in these past three episodes, but I will always remember how beautiful her first two designs were. It will be interesting to see how the final four meet the challenges of the next episodes.
This competion required a mainstream kitchen for a magazine for the masses. So … Creative & outside the box would not make it.
I've seen lots of blue/red kitchens out in the world – Gorgeous.
BTW and lots of wallpaper in kitchens-yes near the stove. Honestly when you cook just don't wander off. Sheesh!
Backsplash -Those Cousins are so uptight & they are guys. Women decorate with almost anything. Anything!
Last – Educate all regarding the difference between granite & quartz. Big difference & big fauz paux in the episode.
so is writing Fauz Paux when you mean faux pas.
My faux pas! Lol
Love the show!
Get those hotties the Property Brothers on as judges. Love them!
Glad for the finalists. Stanley has a career out there. I am hoping that the powers-to be in hgtv read this- You guys need to have a simple concept show where an ordinary space is improved with only paint and the addition of ONE FEATURE/FOCAL ITEM/POINT. Can you see it? The room is gutted out, painted, the feature piece is built and placed and then the owner's items are returned back into the room- with some editing and repositioning. THIS is REAL life. It would be good on cost and then sponsors could be included for the feature- ie a fireplace company. So logical!
