How Would You Decorate a Yurt?

On tonight’s episode of Design Star (tune in at 9/8c), the final three take on a brand new nontraditional home challenge: turn a yurt into a dream bedroom suite. But first: what the heck is a yurt? It’s a portable structure with round walls built on a wood lattice frame.
Though the centuries-old structures originated in central Asia, today they’re used in both old and new ways. You can find them anywhere from vacation communities in the English countryside…
…to traditional farming villages in China.
Here’s the blank slate (via the Colorado Yurt Company) the final three designers will start with on tonight’s episode:

How would you decorate a yurt? Tell me in the comments below!

As a family of 3 (and a dog) that live in a yurt, there are definitely unique challenges outfitting a yurt – round walls, proportion, multi-functionality. Not sure if the "yurt challenge" was a success for the designers. No one really embraced the round walls, building furniture to curve with it – and this was just a bedroom. Want a real challenge? Try designing an entire living space (think round-back kitchen countertops!) It seemed like the possiblities to do something really cool were there but the results were kind of "square".
I am stunned by the decision to send Hilary home. I thought she had won the week's contest. Very surprised.
I agree, I can't stand Danielle, her voice gets on my nerves and Britany doesn't seem to have a "loud" enough personality to carry a show. I liked Hilari, and can honestly say that I won't be watching any show that Britany or Danielle does.
I so agree. She has had the best camera presence out of all the contestants since day 1. Also, her designs have been innovative and attention getting. Her bold colors in the gurt is exactly what I would have chosen-an arabian/persian style. If she had more time, to perhaps drape tapestries and a moraquan chandalier and a persian rug, it would have been great! Although I loved her bed, I think I would have chosen a round bed and had them build a curved headboard, and it may not have taken so long to put together. I am very sorry to see Hilary go, and think they made a big mistake!
Love to have a yurt for our son. He served in the US Navy for four years with three of those years off the coasts in the war zones. After he returned he continued his schooling thanks to the GI Bill.
For some veterans who return home there is a change and the ordinary day to day life is difficult. He is homeless and unemployed and being treated for PTSD. A yurt would give him a home, a place to relax.
We have a piece of property in the woods just perfect for a yurt. It would be on our son's favorite place, his grandpa's woods.
Just a thought; why don't u contact the Colorado Yurt Company and find out whether they would work with u on financing something like this? I don't know anyone who works there, but i noticed from their website, they do finance yurt purchases, and they probably have a heart for suffering Vets, right? Perhaps there's something to be done to help your son. (BTW the yurts in this episode were a bit smaller than he would need for an actual home – aim for a 27sqft yurt, if at all possible.) Maybe a fundraiser (some garage sales or word-of-mouth requests) could help bridge the gap funding. It sounds like a great idea. Good Luck!
I am thinking of using a yurt for my next home on a mountain in Arkansas. The surroundings are so beautiful, that a traditional house would just be out of place. I am doing research on yurts to get more perspective. I see a warm cozy interior, full of useful and multipurpose furniture and storage. Seems like custom interior would be the only way to successfully make yurt living a possibility. A waterbed, seems like good sleeping in a yurt.
Hi Pat,
I just posted a comment about our experience living in a yurt in Hawaii. Check it out. If you want to join my blog – MY YEAR IN A YURT… God's Little Lessons While Living in 450 Not-So-Square-Feet, go to my Facebook page – Jennifer Clay McGeehan, and ask to join the group. I post pictures and share some very interesting challenges as well as how we have dealt with them. Pictures too. Take care.
This show is so rigged! Hilari's yurt was by far the best one. They set it up nicely to have the two they wanted in the finals, with Brittany for the win. Hilari was robbed. Not a good look HGTV.
Hilari was robbed!
Everyone has their own taste. I have liked all of Hilari's designs and think she is talented, but found her yurt standard. Without the bed, it was nothing special. I hated the way she covered her windows. I thought Brittany's was the best, we're all allowed our opinion. The judges wanted to see tips and info and kept telling Hillari that. So even if we viewers don't care about the tips and found Hilari entertaining, the assignment was to provide information. I'm sure Hilari will do great because so many people have seen that she is very talented.
Congratulations Dannielle and Brittany.
I agree the only show I would watch would be hilari. She is so entertaining. I don't watch the network for tips I watch to be entertained. They missed the boat here, I might as well stop watching!
I agree Kelli, no need to watch anymore.
I feel the same way. On camera, they two winners are not that appealing. They have had some good ideas, but Hilari by far has the personality to capture by attention. I won't be watching the rest of this show, either.
So disappointed they sent Hilari home. Loved her personality and design style overall. I wish both Danielle & Brittany the best in the final and Brittany for the win!
I was really disappointed when Hilary was eliminated, I really feel that hgtv needs to stop type casting its host, I think she was great and wld have brought some versatility to the network…
I so agree, whats up HGTV???
WHY DID YOU REMOVE HILLARY?? I LOVED HER CHARM AND PERSONALITY! YOU SCREWED UP THE WHOLE SHOW BECAUSE OF THAT STUPID CHOICE!!! HILLARY WAS A BETTER DESIGNER, HAD BETTER CAMERA PRESENCE, AND DID EVERYTHING BETTER THAN BRITTANY AND DANIELLE!!!!
Who ever asked for your opinion?
P.S. Not that appropriate to write in all caps on a blog. Being the father of such famed farm equipment, I should know! Such a bad example for the youngsters.
