Meg on Episode 8: “…And I Thought Tiny Houses Were Bad”

Meg on why yurts are way more difficult to design than tiny houses, and why she loved Hilari’s space and camera challenge. Plus: A carpenter not quite capturing your vision? Meg’s been there (on Design Star and her own show.)
Do you agree with Meg that Hilari’s space was the most luxe? Who do you think should have gone home?

Hilari should not have gone home…Her work is awesome, engaging, lively and totally colorful! HGTV needs more diversity on the network!!! Hilari style and personality would have boosted ratings and attracted a more diverse audience! Hilari final challenge I personally feel was the best…out of all the rooms surveys says We would Love to sleep in her fantasy bedroom! Blessings to her Bright future!!!
I actually loved Brittany's room. I loved the polished look, her drapes of color across the ceiling and the chandelier, I thought the bed was genius, and I think she showed she can think out of the box. Her art work wasn't my favorite, but I think she made good use of the tools she had at hand. Danielle's room was also beautiful, while completely different from Brittany's. She has a great eye, though she does get flustered easily. The bed wasn't that great, but hats off to Danielle for admitting that she didn't give Chip enough direction to realize her vision. She has shown nothing but class throughout this competition. Hilary's room was beautiful, but not my cup of tea. And while her personality leaps through the camera at you – and yes, I love her – she rarely offers tips or information that really is going to help me or make me think. I think the judges made the right choice, and look forward to seeing the final challenge.
Everyone has the same triet response about Hilari not "explaining things". I for one feel that would be incorporated into the production. Are these shows live? Let's see if they can produce personality, genuiness, warmth and likeability for the other two. Yet judges willing to try that, but not just a few editing problems. Guess they had to think of somthing to get her off the show to set up their "fantasy duel". Blah!
They were judged based on overall design and camera challenge. Hillary did improve but at the same time she does not provide new ideas and tips that we can do on our own. Danielle is amazing, love her designs ever since week one she never failed a challenge or was on the bottom. Brittany is also very good. Its a hard decision this season. Hope the best designer wins.
Finally got to watch last nights episode and like so many others am beyond disappointed that Hilari was sent home! I thought her design was the best and she has an awesome personality. I’m not criticizing the other contestants but she seems genuine and warm which are key components to having people tune in each week. I will not be watching the finale because it will end in the same predictable fashion.
Wow I love all the excitement. I think Hilari’s room looked great. She really surprised me by stepping it up from the awful red kitchen mess or the white room challenge but her camera challenges missed the point. She was super giddy and fun but I learned nothing from them. With Britany her paint a lamp shade idea camera challenge, I actually want to try. I think they all have talent but if you can’t explain what to do it’ll never work for you on TV. Then again if you cant finish in time that poses problems too. Seems like Danielle has had some blunders that im just surprised she made it this far. It’ll be interesting.
Hillari has an engaging personality, but over the length of the series I did not find her designs particularly innovative, or appealing. It was evident the 3 women remaining had become good friends. Hillari was much more gracious in her comments and reaction than 95% of the snotty comments on this blog.
I have never disagreed with the HGTV staff for Design Star like this before…. but guys???????? Either you are seeing takes that went on the cutting room floor that we are not privy to or I desperately need a new tv..and I do not think the later. Something is just not clicking this season. Love the YURT…. we have seen this before on HGTV in the desert I think, and I loved the idea….but Beach Bungalow.. where?? Not a thing in this yurt said beach, vacation, sand or water and on camera the pictures were so busy they just didn't work sorry but way too too! However, she has won three of the challenges and that has to stand for soemthing so I agree keeping Britiany was the right thing to do. Her room shows creativity just not cohesive enough (continued)
Part 2….Danielle, although a good designer and I am sure wonderful talent has shown her skills many times before last night… but she always winds up stressing out not only herself but the audience because she doesn't leave herself any flexible space to "wiggle" should a problem arise, hense the panic and tears in the past. But tonight when she is left to pull out all the stops her main focal point is really sad, that bed just didn't do it, but her room was judged the best one of the night by some? Because of the texture she used????From my screen it was just not hitting the level that a winners room should , sorry. (continued)
No way should Danielle have won.
Sometimes it's difficult to see the design details on television. Maybe if we saw the rooms in person we would understand the judges' points of view more. They obviously see things we don't; and, who knows what goes on behind the scenes when the cameras are off. Some of the designers may be shooting themselves in the foot with missteps that are of prime importance to a network. They are making a huge investment in one of these Design Stars, and they have to go with the person whom they believe will deliver the goods – and handle stardom well. Not to mention being able to "go the distance."
part 3 And you sent home the only room that was cohesive on camera………luscious, rich, well dressed, this room is THE room that said rest, relax and enjoy the fantasy. Ok so she covered the windows and left the area on each side of the bed empty..that was enough to send her home after the great recoup she made in her 30 second spot? And the rooms she has transformed in the previous shows? On another similar show the mentor said something like "I can teach you to cook, but you have to have that special repoire with the camera and that must come naturally.." Sorry folks I just think you sent the talent home this season.
