Meg on Episode 8: “…And I Thought Tiny Houses Were Bad”

Meg on why yurts are way more difficult to design than tiny houses, and why she loved Hilari’s space and camera challenge. Plus: A carpenter not quite capturing your vision? Meg’s been there (on Design Star and her own show.)
Do you agree with Meg that Hilari’s space was the most luxe? Who do you think should have gone home?

You know, if Brittany had used photos of water, she would have achieved the "beachy" feel she said she was going for – water or sand or both.
I hate to say this , but I think Danielle should have been the one to go home. I love all three of the designers, but Hilari had a much better design in my opinion and always does better on camera. Brittany is still my number one favorite. I hope she wins.
I agree…no way should Danielle have won.
I have enjoyed Hilari the most all season and am soooo disappointed!!! She was a breath of fresh air
and was entertaining to watch! When the camera first showed her bedroom design it took my breath
away-loved it!!!! We're stuck with the same-o, same-o. Hilari, good luck and I will miss you!!
One more thing—-I think we've seen that 'round ball' light fixture enough that was in Brittany's design!
It has been used over and over on many HGTV programs.
An example of how creative Meg is: she said she might have put Britani's photography on the headboard. Sounds great to me. But I have tp agree with Vern that I would have liked to have seen Britani's photos more abstract b/c the diagonal trellis design of the yurt wall was already so busy, so lots of leaves in the photos were a bit much. Perhaps a close of up a leaf or a couple of leaves, and more close ups of just a branch, etc., so that it would look almost abstract and not compete with the diamond trellis pattern. Still, Hilari's room transported me the most, with Hillari's second. But I can see why the judges had issues with her space planning and her camera challenges. Danielle and the carpenter apparently miscommunicated, because the design Danielle showed him looked different from the final product. I agree with Meg that it needed to be draped more heavily to disguise those too-broad posters.
With regard to the smallness of Hillari's daybed. I believe it was an antique and probably built at a time when people were smaller and I'm not sure the concept of the double bed had even been invented. When I was young, I actually had a "3/4 bed," and that's about the size Hillari's bed looked to me — just slightly wider than an average daybed.
I have seen these beds at antique stores and they are slightly smaller than a double bed, however I think Hillari was looking for effect and a WOW factor for this fantasy challenge so again I have to say her choice was spot on ! In real life they are so dramatic I could see why she didn't choose a lot of extraa fluff to go with.
Hilari should have won…..hers was best of all for sure…..better than Meg's place last year!!!!!!!
Meg, you thought small houses were bad? Not necessarily, but yours certainly was. It was gawd awful.
I agree that Hilari's presence in front of the camera is good and that she is definitely the one I'd prefer to watch from an entertainment standpoint. Hilari hopefully will will the online contest. But I did she some big goofs with her room… One fault I did see with her bed was that in the store, those panels that she had on the side that created what the judges saw as wasted space and that functioned as a kind of "blinder" on each side were actually originally shown on the top of the bed where they made a roof of sorts which made the bed look much more open and accessable. You can see this in that segment. The lack of windows exacerbated the bed issue of closing everything in. At night this room would be pretty and exotic, but I wouldn't want to spend much time in it in the daytime.
If you're on vacation, you probably will be out and about all day…the time you spend in the yurt will be for sleeping (or romance…lol).
Totally agree with Tina, Hilari and Brit in the final. Loved the clever rotating bed/wall/storage, cool. Hilari's was the most beautiful, period. Danielle, I have to wonder, what am I not seeing the judges do? What happened to Candace as a judge? LOVED HER! Vern and Gen need a vacation, bring us new judges. Love David, he is a wonderful addition!
I'm sick of David, too….always so perky and preachy….kinda' annoying.
