David on the Finale: “She Just Glistened in Front of the Camera”

The mentor and host joined the design panel this week as guest judge. See his critiques of the designs + why the panel chose Danielle.
Do you agree with David’s critiques? Who did you want to win Design Star? Chat in the comments below.

Congrats Danielle! You did a fine job.. I look forward to watching your show.. Love your colorful pallet. Britney you rocked too…you have an eye for detail… You’re definitely going places!
I was glad to see Danielle win. Besides being more natural on camera, her design reflected what the clients wanted with her style bringing it together; whereas Britany- though a very good designer- always has her glam-chic style overliad. Will definitely watch Danielle's show. Would also like to comment on Meg- last years winner. I was reluctant at first but now I watch her every week and enjoy her design style and personality.
Same with me — Meg's show is addictive! Love her work, her personality and her interaction with her carpenter. They are great together.
Nope, sorry can't do it….tried but couldn't deal. But will agree with you about Danielle and Brittany, both of them were shining stars but Danielle definately had the right edge. Thank God none of the D-R-A-M-A of the last season, that was just way too much and detracted from the whole premise of the show.
Loved the finale! Have been rooting for Danielle all season. Yes, she had some down times, but the judges were still able to see her talent shining through.
I haven't always liked the winners (Emily comes to mind), but I always watch at least two of their shows to give them a chance. Never did like Emily, so don't watch her, but Antonio grew on me and he does a wonderful job of listening to his clients and giving them what they want. Adored Meg all season and love her show. Her personality shines through and she constantly comes up with clever things I never would have thought of.
That doesn't mean that I love everything …they all do things now and then that I dislike, but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop watching their shows.
Go HGTV. Great job on Design Star this season!
Danielle was my favorite from the beginning! For the first time, Design Star and I agree. Danielle has both personality and design style. I was rooting for her the whole season! I can't wait to watch your show.
HGTV needs to let the viewers not the judges decide who the winner is. This format is to Politically Correct and that is the basis that they chose the winner on not talent. Britanny was by far the better designer and in time would have gotten great on camera. But as usual Vern and company wanted to be PC so they picked Dnielle. If HGTV continues doing this then they will lose viewership and when viewership goes so does sponsorship and the money that it brings in. Either get rid of Vern and company and put some unbiased judges who will judge strictly on ability or let the viewers decide they know better who they like and want to watch on TV on a regular basis. Hi Dave –
I'm confused at your use of the term "politically correct" (or "p.c."). If HGTV were to let the viewers decide the winner, wouldn't that be far more politically correct? If we think of politics as an appeal to the people, or at least some political process without a direct mandate from a higher power, the design panel in this case, then the network is not being overly politically correct at all.
But that's an issue of semantics. I'm not completely naïve and can guess your true implication – I just wanted to ignore it because it's so backward, even childish. Correct me if I'm missing the boat, but please please please don't assert that Design Star boils down to some kind of competition between binary ideas of black vs. white. Danielle is seemingly mixed-race, and why jump to conclusions about Britany's racial profile? We're living in 2012 and the competition was between adult professional designers, not between continental ancestry!

PC? Huh? Do you mean racially? There were some commenters who complained that Hilari was eliminated because HGTV would give a black contestant her own show, but Kim Myles won season two of Design Star. So I'm confused about what you mean by PC. Letting viewers decide would be a big mistake because (1) the public can be flaky, (2) some contestants simply have more friends and/or relatives who will vote multiple times, (3) the public has little professional taste, and those who do often will not be the people voting (look at American Idol and Dancing With the Stars, where it often too turns into a popularity contest more than a talent contest).
Yikes: You are so backward with your" PC" = to BS……what century are you living in, anyway? Danielle and Brittany are both super designers, unbelievably talented…..what's your real beef??
I have to say Danielle was a bit over the top with her camera challenge, she got on my nerves with her cutsie comments. Reminded me of GG and I can't stan her or Vern. They think the are all superior and they are far from it.
I have watched design star since it started but don't think I will watch again, too many times they let the wrong person win based on personality not design! Britanny was definately the best designer. She always delivered her room with class and not funky stuff anyone could do. That is the point of the show not who can do weird stuff but who looks more professional as a designer.
Britany Simon was BY FAR the best Designer on Design Star this season. I watched every episode and was totally convinced she should win. Her style was the best and was much more interesting than any of the other designers. I was really looking forward to seeing her show in the future. Frankly, Danielle's style and colors were boring. Britany, best wishes to you in the future.
Congratulations to Danielle! I did like much of Britany's work over the season and I think she, Danielle and Hilari were the most talented, but all 12 had talent that appeal to some and not others.
Britany lost for the simple reason that she did not listen to her clients. Period. After an entire season she should have learned that. I also would NEVER have picked that wallpaper in the dining room, it totally clashed with the beauty of the stain glass windows (did you even notice them viewers?). I also thought the bamboo shades (which fit the bohemian style of Danielle's clients) were completely out of place in Britany's living room. Yes, Danielle should have put the tv on the wall opposite the sectional and I hated the blue dining room chairs, but everything in the space fit her CLIENT'S taste. And really, let's face it, these people are ARTISTS! The viewers may not have appreciated the wife's artwork, but let me tell you, that woman would have been PO'd if Danielle had put them away and replaced them with store bought pictures!
Good luck to Danielle, Britany and let's not forget Hilari. I think Hilari will turn up with her own show because she has an engaging personality. She made me laugh at least once every episode!
Hilari was my favorite. I was sorry to see her go. Her designs were great and her personality made me smile
I am definitely going to do that wall hanging that she taught us to do where you take material and staple it over two boards. Of everything I watched on this Design Star, the one thing I remember is that. I also loved it how she showed us to put a silk plant into a lamp.
Funny she didn't win, but she is the one I learned the most from.
HORRIBLE job this year. If you are going to put so much into how someone is on TV, then their nasally, nails on a chalkboard voice has to come into effect. No one wants to watch a show when the person's voice is grating. My wife and I couldn't stand Danielle's voice and her designs were nowhere close to Britanys. In fact she should have been out way before this. Hilari could have a show and people would watch. I'd want rooms that look like Brittany's. I don't want to hear a lazy version of Fran Drescher. Besides David, when has one of the recent choices done anything worthwhile. Again, you failed.
They blew it again–just like last year–Meg over Karl!! Danielle's show is so blah–watching a designer shop for a cool accent for a room–BORING! I think Britany was by far the better designer and listened to what the clients wanted. I wish her all the best–she is going to have a bright future. Keep it up HGTV and no one is going to watch the new Design Star episodes. Meg show is terrible and I am sure whiney Danielle's will be the same
Karl had become occasionally snarky and sulky, and his last two or three efforts weren't great. His last room in the finale was good, but it just didn't look as finished. I agree he's very talented, but his personality could be grating. Meg's personality is warm and her rooms look wonderful, full and finished. Her homeowners are usually just thrilled with what she does.
