Ask the Producer: Design Star All Stars Episode 2

Each week, I chat with Design Star All Stars producer Loren Ruch about the best on-set moments and what you didn’t see on the show. This week: the most memorable behind-the-scenes dish from the Dancing With the Stars makeover. Plus, which room looked better on TV than in person.

Design Star And Dancing With the Stars

Dancing With the Stars Dancers Jonathan Rogers and Anna Trebunskaya with Design Star Producer Loren Ruch

How did you find the Dancing With the Stars couple to feature on the show?
One of our Design Star producers actually worked on Dancing with the Stars, and asked us “Do you think that we’d want to makeover Jonathan and Anna’s house? I’ve been there and they don’t have a lot of furniture!” That’s all I needed to hear to say “Yes, PLEASE!” I just had a hunch that HGTV viewers would be the same people who watch DWTS, so I thought it would be a fun collaboration!

Did the cast/crew learn any new dance moves? What was the best moment we didn’t see on the show?
You may have seen the small ‘dance’ sequence on the show, but it was even funnier in person! Leslie was so excited to dance with Anna that she was literally fanning herself off afterwards! And Josh wanted to peek through their closets in search of dance costumes (which of course he didn’t because we weren’t working on the bedroom), but it was just a hilarious episode behind-the-scenes and in front of the camera. One of our more fun episodes to shoot, by far!

Design Star Judge Monica Pedersen

Producer Loren Ruch, Judges and Host with Guest Monica Pedersen

Did any of the rooms or features look better (or worse) in person than on camera?
In this case, yes. I have to say that Anna’s room did not look as great in person as I would have hoped. This is just my humble opinion, and I don’t mean to insult anyone, but the walls looked like the colors of ‘scrubs’ in person, so it felt a little medical to me. I also thought that some of the dining room chairs would have benefited by pillows, and that the stand for the chandelier looked unfinished. That said, it still made a pretty first impression when you walked in. Jonathan’s room looked fantastic in person. In fact, Monica Pedersen said “I want them to design my house!” – which is a huge compliment coming from a designer!

  1. The video for this episode is still broken. Ironically, it's stuck on the Tom say "I think that's annoying". It keeps repeating like a DJ mix. I've cleared my cache and it still comes up broken. Browser: Chrome

    • It is broken still on Saturday morning, 12:27 a.m. Central Time!! So aggravating! Now it stops about 15 minutes in, but goes back to all of the contestants standing in front of the panel where before you heard Tom say "…annoying.."

  2. Hi, Producer Loren Ruch, it's approximately 945 am pst on Thursday, 8.9, and episode 2 of Design Star All-Stars still is experiencing technical difficulties. There are many of us who depend on our computer to watch one of our favorite shows and we still can't access it! By the way, how about hosting a Design Star special featuring all of the winners from the various seasons in their own white box challenge? Such as having them draw out of the infamous paint can a room, with a specific color scheme, and letting America choose the winner, giving the cash prize to a specific charity. Fun for all!!!

  4. Love Hilari, she is so much fun. Leslie is so threatened by Hilari and Josh, she makes herself look like an idiot. She says their personalities are "BIG"! Leslie tries to control everything, conversations, no one can talk when shes around. Hilari did some really nice arrangements and the home owners did not get to see them because Leslie changed them. Hilari put your foot down. lol the owner said "No mirrors". Leslie, a good designer listens to the owner. Hilari, you deserve to win!

  8. It would have been great to see a little more dancing, I know it's a design show, of course, but just the few steps we saw were a treat. And I might have been fanning myself too, if I had danced a bit with Anna.

  9. Would be nice if Liz or anyone posted a few more comments like Aarti did as a blogger for each episode of HGTV's Food Network Star. Communication is sparse.

This site seems to be neglected and kinda ignored. Did you guys get layoffs over there too?

Wayne on August 9, 2012 at 5:19 pm
    • Food Network has a lot of problems on their full episodes also. Try watching the half of the Great Food Truck Race shows and most of them cut off after 10 minutes instead of the full 40, Restaurant Impossible also has a show that doesn't work. They don't care too much about the websites it seems like (and HGTV and Food Network seem to be run by the same companies somewhat)

  10. Please fix the full-episode video. It stops at "that is annoying" after about 3 minutes into the episode. I would like to see it before I read who won and lost. Thank you.
