Ask the Producer: Design Star All Stars Episode 2

Each week, I chat with Design Star All Stars producer Loren Ruch about the best on-set moments and what you didn’t see on the show. This week: the most memorable behind-the-scenes dish from the Dancing With the Stars makeover. Plus, which room looked better on TV than in person.

Design Star And Dancing With the Stars

Dancing With the Stars Dancers Jonathan Rogers and Anna Trebunskaya with Design Star Producer Loren Ruch

How did you find the Dancing With the Stars couple to feature on the show?
One of our Design Star producers actually worked on Dancing with the Stars, and asked us “Do you think that we’d want to makeover Jonathan and Anna’s house? I’ve been there and they don’t have a lot of furniture!” That’s all I needed to hear to say “Yes, PLEASE!” I just had a hunch that HGTV viewers would be the same people who watch DWTS, so I thought it would be a fun collaboration!

Did the cast/crew learn any new dance moves? What was the best moment we didn’t see on the show?
You may have seen the small ‘dance’ sequence on the show, but it was even funnier in person! Leslie was so excited to dance with Anna that she was literally fanning herself off afterwards! And Josh wanted to peek through their closets in search of dance costumes (which of course he didn’t because we weren’t working on the bedroom), but it was just a hilarious episode behind-the-scenes and in front of the camera. One of our more fun episodes to shoot, by far!

Design Star Judge Monica Pedersen

Producer Loren Ruch, Judges and Host with Guest Monica Pedersen

Did any of the rooms or features look better (or worse) in person than on camera?
In this case, yes. I have to say that Anna’s room did not look as great in person as I would have hoped. This is just my humble opinion, and I don’t mean to insult anyone, but the walls looked like the colors of ‘scrubs’ in person, so it felt a little medical to me. I also thought that some of the dining room chairs would have benefited by pillows, and that the stand for the chandelier looked unfinished. That said, it still made a pretty first impression when you walked in. Jonathan’s room looked fantastic in person. In fact, Monica Pedersen said “I want them to design my house!” – which is a huge compliment coming from a designer!

  1. Ok … Got to watch about 2/3 of the episode online before video glitched … again …
    *sigh*

  2. I love Dan and Tom together. They're both so talented. I'm glad they worked their differences out. I thought the blue that Tom picked for the room looked great. It might have looked different in person. Maybe a little more gray in the blue? The only reason Sparkle Josh picked the lighting fixture he did was because Leslie was spending all their money on mirrors that the client didn't even want. Hillary, Hillary, Hillary – I love this young woman. I'd love to see more of her too.

  3. Vern, love love love the blue color Dan picked out. It must read a little different on camera, than in person. Please reconsider. Love that Tom got the win this week, he really did a good job last week, even though it was all nuetral, and I think I see his style. Dan's media center, OH MY GOSH@! To die for! Dan is like unreal, and doesn't seem to be annoyed when things don't go his way! Still trying to completely understand him. In a good way. Leslie, very mature, and good for her, that she's on the final four! Well deserved. Hilari has some serious talent! I agree with the judges that the stripes could have been tone on tone, and would have been a little easier. Best guest judge so far, including all of Season 7. So professional. Hilari wants to be just like her, and rightly so. Hilari, is already like her. I'm not making a guess of who the final two will be, but if it's the two that I'm thinking of, I'm going to have brain freeze and stop the show for over 3 weeks just so that I can be prepared for a huge win, but also a huge disappointment for two of my favorite favorite people!

  4. I would sure love to meet David and Meg and Genvieve and Vern. Are there ever tickets to events like the taping of a show or any events to meet them at? Would also like to meet Dan and Hilari too.

  5. Bring back Clive! This year's Design Star is substandard. All the emphasis on camera challenges-"Buy things on clearance"- and judges such as Kris Kardashian are just NOT professional. Vern and Genevieve are extremely dogmatic in their criticism of the contestants without giving reasons. Most disappointing and morphing a initial creative concept into redunduncy.:(

  6. Here's my dream Design Star All Stars cast:

    Temple McDowell (season 1)
    Robb Mariani (season 2)
    Michael Stribling (season 3)
    Courtland Bascon (season 5)
    Miera Melba (season 7)
(I'm not sure who I would pick as my third girl. I wasn't a huge fan of seasons 4 and 6. If we could have two people from the same season it would either be Donna or Tracy, just because drama is hilarious. If two girls are sufficient, I'd pick Kris, because I'm sure the Kris/Michael/Courtland/Robb encounters would be hilarious)

    • You know what I'd like to see? Either an all-female, or all-male cast on design all*stars. Talk about competition………..I do like your choices, though; for another female on your dream cast, how about the woman who was on emily's season; she had long, curly black hair and was always painting vine-like designs on the walls in every room she ever designed……talk about drama!!! Plus, I'd like to see about ten designers to start, and I think making them work in pairs or in a group tells alot about their personalities, how well they work with each other, and also with the client(s). HGTV, are you listening? Your loyal fans have some great ideas!!!

  9. I would love to see Hilari win Design All Stars. She is so fun to watch. She glows! Give her a show or make her a returning/permanent HGTV personality. She would make a great host!!! Give her a chance. She truly shines! I really like her fun energy!

  10. Seriously??? The video is still stuck when Tom says "I think that's annoying"……..must have missed part of the day when it worked for awhile. Please fix it, HGTV!!! Thank you….
