Ask the Producer: Design Star All Stars Episode 2
Each week, I chat with Design Star All Stars producer Loren Ruch about the best on-set moments and what you didn’t see on the show. This week: the most memorable behind-the-scenes dish from the Dancing With the Stars makeover. Plus, which room looked better on TV than in person.

Dancing With the Stars Dancers Jonathan Rogers and Anna Trebunskaya with Design Star Producer Loren Ruch
How did you find the Dancing With the Stars couple to feature on the show?
One of our Design Star producers actually worked on Dancing with the Stars, and asked us “Do you think that we’d want to makeover Jonathan and Anna’s house? I’ve been there and they don’t have a lot of furniture!” That’s all I needed to hear to say “Yes, PLEASE!” I just had a hunch that HGTV viewers would be the same people who watch DWTS, so I thought it would be a fun collaboration!
Did the cast/crew learn any new dance moves? What was the best moment we didn’t see on the show?
You may have seen the small ‘dance’ sequence on the show, but it was even funnier in person! Leslie was so excited to dance with Anna that she was literally fanning herself off afterwards! And Josh wanted to peek through their closets in search of dance costumes (which of course he didn’t because we weren’t working on the bedroom), but it was just a hilarious episode behind-the-scenes and in front of the camera. One of our more fun episodes to shoot, by far!

Producer Loren Ruch, Judges and Host with Guest Monica Pedersen
Did any of the rooms or features look better (or worse) in person than on camera?
In this case, yes. I have to say that Anna’s room did not look as great in person as I would have hoped. This is just my humble opinion, and I don’t mean to insult anyone, but the walls looked like the colors of ‘scrubs’ in person, so it felt a little medical to me. I also thought that some of the dining room chairs would have benefited by pillows, and that the stand for the chandelier looked unfinished. That said, it still made a pretty first impression when you walked in. Jonathan’s room looked fantastic in person. In fact, Monica Pedersen said “I want them to design my house!” – which is a huge compliment coming from a designer!

For those of you who are still running into technical difficulties when trying to view try emailing HGTV at the following link: (Perhaps if they are inundated they will put a priority on it. I am not sure anyone reads and really responds actively to these comments.)

Choose the option of "Question" and "Technical Problem", and then fill out the rest of the fields. I received an email back the next day, saying that they are aware of the problem and are trying to fix it. HGTV is a part of Scripps networks, and the email came from them.
I tried what one user said, using Safari (thanks for the suggestion!) and had no luck. I tried 3 different browsers on my PC, tried 2 on my son's PC, and tried Safari on my husbands relatively new MacAir. ALL of them resulted in the same glitch. So it could be that there is some other technical problem, such as how firewalls are configured, or something. But bottom line, there are a LOT of us faithful HGTV fans and viewers who are becoming more and more frustrated. And if there are SO many of us that still cannot view it then Scripps network needs to help work on a solution.
Genevieve has been wearing the same gold “B” necklace on all the episodes, and I love it!! Where did she get it?
What is the hotel that the stars are living at in epsiode 2? Was it in the names that go by really fast at the end of the show? It looks cool.
Genevieve is so condescending. I can't stand to listen to her talk. Vern is a nice guy, but I think it's time for him to go, too.
PLEASE FIX THE VIDEO FOR EPISODE 2! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At least allow season 2 to be seen on youtube or something!!!! Gosh!!!! How hard can it be? Take the old one down; out up a new video file!!!! Anyways, i'm moving on!!!! Season 3 it is… going in blind without the knowledge of the last challenge. THANKS A LOT HGTV!!!! (PISSED!!!!)

Still no luck watching episode 2 online … HGTV, don't hate me because I don't have cable!
What r u guys thinking ?? Leslie? She is so dry n annoying to watch. Hilari draws me n 4 of my friends who all watch it. She is so down to earth n makes u feel good, also it would be nice to see a little more diversity in your hosts on your network don’t you think? I’m a 36 yr old Caucasian and even I want to see what to hear about and see new exciting ideas from different types of people.
