David on the All Stars Finale: The Toast Goes To…

David breaks down the designs and the final decision. Plus, inside intel from the judging room.
Here’s what David had to say from the set:
Do you agree with David (and the judges)? Did the right designer win? Weigh in in the comments below.

You know what, I'm starting to believe it's a conspiracy to keep Hilari from having her own show on HGTV. She brings in the viewers on Design Star but she is threatening to the current hosts (Gen I'm speaking directly to you). I can see why. She is vibrant and her energy is infectious. Besides Candace, she is the only person on the network I'd truly want to ask advice of. This is not meant to take anything away from Tom or Leslie. The judges had a difficult decision and their rooms were quite nice (and I do find Tom quite endearing), but I think given the body of work displayed over the competition as well as past camera challenges (saying nothing of her fantastic shipping container!), Hilari should have won.
The Murphy bed? Where do you keep the bedding. You can't even close it with pillows on it. the space was cluttered, and look disorganized. Not a vacation space at all, looked like an attic.
Judges got it wrong!
wow. poor hilari. she can design my house anytime! i LOVED the color, LOVED the space, LOVE her personality. i agree with others that she was robbed. SHE SHOULD HAVE WON! i don't normally like tom's style, but i thought he did a great job this time. definitely better than leslie! i like leslie's quirky personality, but not her designs. and isn't that what this network is all about?? hilari–i love ya, girl! and i'm gonna use all your awesome tips to help me with my own home.
To be honest, I think all 3 of them did a fabulous job! But if you look at the overall performance:
camera challenge: Leslie hit both personal touch and info, Hilari and Tom both missed on the personality
Leslie had that one misstep on the design with the bench but Hilari's salmon walls just wasn't quite there. I LOVED her room though. She did the best job. It didn't look cluttered. Leslie's room felt a little cluttered to me. Tom did his usual and that's probably why they chose Leslie.
Do these designers get amnesia or something? Just last week Dan got booted for that lime green wall color.
And someone from season 6 got booted for that same Salmon color. Seems like wall color is a deal breaker to continue on DS. I can't think of one designer who got to stay for a bad wall color come to think of it. And I guess it makes sense since walls are pretty dominant in a space. Wrong wall color and it throws off the whole space.
I have to say that up until Design Star All Stars I was a huge fan of Leslie's but unfortunately I thought her container room was her least admirable design project. I'm sorry, I know she is talented because I adored all her other rooms before but I think in this competition Hilari was by far the winner both inside her container crate and outside. I disagree with Genevieve in the color choice although perhaps it did look fleshy as she said when viewed off TV. But Hilari's divider piece and just over all panache was evident in this mid-century cozy spot. I find it hard to believe that these designers would choose to say in Leslie's space over Hilari. I would have rather stayed in Tom's container room over Leslie's. Dearest Leslie did not space plan well, the murphy bed was hardly luxe and had about as much style as a lodge bed! Sorry guys but you guys were all off the mark! We love you Hilari!!!!!!!!!! But congrats to Leslie because if you take this container project out of all her designed rooms, there is no doubt she is a designer with a great deal of style and talent. I'm still a fan.
Like many others, I liked Hilari's salmon color choice. When Genevieve criticized it as too fleshy, I thought: it's not fleshy for Hilari — her flesh is a different color! I'm sure Genevieve isn't racist. She was just oblivious to the irony of her remark. But then Dear Genevieve seems oblivious to a lot of things.
Hilari should have won hands down. Very surprised Leslie is the winner, her personality is not pleasant to watch and her designs have been done before. Hilari is great to watch and a breath of fresh air. Bad decisions HGTV.
Did anyone mension that Hillary also went outside her comfort zone to create the wonderful room in the last episode? She was also the only one who actually listened to the assignment and made the patio an extension of the house. Leslie's room really isn't even worth mentioning except to say that it looked as if it was the room of a very messy teenager. Tom's was nice but no departure from what he usually does. Very disappointing.
Genevieve is always critical when she sees competition. She should go. Hiliari should have won. I am completely turned off by design star. I really liked it the first few seasons when the audience could vote, as soon as they stopped that, the quality of the winners has gone down. Genevieve and Vern should move on, their comments are so one-dimensional. When Genevieve's show comes on, I turn the station and Vern only does some random show so why are they the judges. The shows I like are Sabrina's, Davids, and Candace. Those are the people who should be the judges. Candance probably left because the other two were so pushy but didn't have her depth of deisgn talent.
I love, love, love watching Design Star, and was very happy for the full episodes of this All-Star to stream smoothly this time! I do not spend time posting comments, but I am so very disappointed, and still very much in SHOCK with the decision that was made. I have to say that this was a huge thing for the judges to make a decision outside of the specified criteria. This is "Design Star All-Star", not "Innovative Idea Star". There is no way the judges can say that Hillary by far had the best design, and then give the win over to someone that had a (singular) innovative idea. Like I said, I love the show, but I don't have the heart after seeing this to watch the next one. It is unacceptable to set the bar for what will win, and then veer from that after all contestants have delivered against those set criteria. This was a huge blow to the gut for me, and I don't trust the judges after this. There is no question about who the Design Star All-Star winner was, and yet she, Hillary, went home empty handed. This is wrong on so many levels that I will NOT be watching Design Star in the future. The judges really let the network and all viewers down with this decision.
