David on the All Stars Finale: The Toast Goes To…

David breaks down the designs and the final decision. Plus, inside intel from the judging room.
Here’s what David had to say from the set:
Do you agree with David (and the judges)? Did the right designer win? Weigh in in the comments below.

That's an interesting question: Where do the glass houses, yurts, little wooden houses, shipping containers go when the last challenge is completed? To the big design house in the sky? Are they auctioned off? Dismantled and returned to sender? Wouldn't it be a great idea to auction them as is or piece by piece with the money going to habitat for humanity, for instance. In this case, I agree that Tom and Hilari should each take home their own shipping container as they designed it, and enjoy the fruits of their labors (courtesy of HGTV, all expenses paid, delivered to the destination of their choice). How much does a shipping container cost? And where/how do you get one? Kind of a cool idea if you had a place to put it……..
I can't believe the show is over! I really enjoyed it (except for the myriad of streaming problems which seem to come with Loew's commercials). With Dan eliminated, I was rooting for Hilari. I liked Hilari's room the best, it's much like my own style. Love the mid-century look layered with girly color and glitzy accessories. I loved her paint color, but maybe it would have worked better as an accent wall. I really didn't like Leslie's room, It looked overdone to me, as did Tom's. But I do like her quirky personality so I was happy for her. I'd watch any show with these designers on it. I really don't like Tom's style, but I'd still watch his show because I like him so much. That's how I feel about Emily Henderson too. Love her, but not her style so much, so I watch. I love Antonio's style and personality! Please bring back his show.
Oh my, what am I going to do with no Design Star! At least there's still Project Runway for a little while. Hope there will be a new season of Design Star and All Stars soon! Thank you to all the brave designers who participate on these shows.
Guess we need to tune in to Amazing Race instead.
Previous comment about Leslie's space looking cluttered to the viewer was right on. Hilary's space was the best thought-out. Tom's was second.
was shocked at the decision. To me, Leslie was on the bottom of my list. Tom was dynamic and artistic, and Hilary was youthful and brought a spark of color and a current style. I have watched HGTV since it started. It used to be so creative and appealed to people across the board. Now it seems that going to foreign countries and showing the most gaudy of millionaire, billionaire houses is the latest trend. I don't like Leslie. She was flighty and nasty to the other designers. I will not be watching her show. Hilary would have been a great asset to HGTV. Sadly HGTV is going downhill.
David. I always have been a fan of yours, but this time, I feel like you fell into a trap of some kind of evil spell. There was no way that Leslie was the best for any of the reasons you mention. Get out while the getting is good. You are a great designer and artist. HGTV is going down for the count. Don't go down with it.
Yay for Hilary. Whatever she does, she is going to wow 'em. Just like she did on the show!
My computer is slow as molasses, but I had to review the comments from the finale. I'm happy to see that I am still in touch with reality. I disagree with the judges' choice also. Leslie's room came across as cluttered, cramped and a knee- bumping space on my tv. Leslie's room looked like a thrift shop from a seaside/coastal town. I went to bed thinking that I needed to buy myself a new tv because I didn't see the beauty of the room. I was glad to see that Hilari was invited back to All Stars, and I thought the judges would rectify their error from Design Star. Even more confusing to me is the fact that Hilari's design is featured on the site, but she did not win.
Ah, yes! Hilari's design was the featured picture on the Design All*Stars site, and last week, the pic was of the bookcase in the set she and Dan designed. So you noticed that, too……..interesting, huh?
I, also, found it ironic that the losing designer's creation is the feature photo on the Design Stars All Stars page!
Don't know what you were thinking! Hilari was consistently the best designer, especially in the final challenge, and she has by far the best personality both in the show and in the camera segments. It was a no brainer to choose her and I was shocked and frustrated when she didn't win.
Hilari should have won! It seems that nearly all of the commenting is in support of her design. I just can't understand the judges reasoning. Hilari was the only person I was interested in watching from the Design Stars season, and I had really hoped that this Design Stars All Stars was going to be her chance to win, because she should have won. I wish the audience had a say! Hilari's room was gorgeous, it made me want to buy a shipping container and do exactly what she did!
I concur. I'm still mystified as to the judge's decision, and don't understand it at all. Where are the producer's comments, by the way??? He has alot of explaining to do about this week's decision…….
it would be fun to see hilari on david's "color splash" or meg's "great rooms". they would all play well together & there'd be some interesting colors & designs.
No, I think they will have Leslie on Danielle's new show-they both are shoppers.
I really do not understand what the judges were thinking. I so totally disagree with them. Hilari was by far the winner in my opinion. Not only was her design the most well thought out plan for inside and out but certainly looked so much better on screen. Tom's was so classy and I would love for him to come decorate for me as he hits my style on the head each time but I have to say Hilari is by far the best designer. Vern and Gen are really lacking in my opinion. Hilari has consistently shown herself to have excellent hosting and designing skills. I hope some network exec is smart enough to grab her up. May have to be a competing network!!!!
Hilari – You go girl!!! You know your the better designer and guess what, the public agrees that you are. I heard once that politicians pay attention to how many write in supporting or disagreeing on some issue and figure for how many write in that there are multitudes who agree but nerver take the time. Look at the 70 or so comments on here. I only saw one that agreed with the judges. By far the majority agrees you should have won!
