Ask the Producer: Brother Vs. Brother Episode 5

Each week, I chat with Brother Vs. Brother producer Loren Ruch about his favorite behind-the-scenes moments and what we didn’t see on the show. This week: Haven’t we seen those contestants on HGTV before? Yes…find out where.

@Marilyn_Deane asks “Is there anything you would change/tweak/do differently in subsequent series for Brother vs. Brother?”
Great question, Marilyn! I am thinking that next season, we might want to play around with our mini-challenges a bit more. So instead of always doing an appraisal challenge, maybe we will try some other fun quizzes or games. If you have any suggestions, please let us know!

Blog reader Laura Paige wants to know: In the finale, will the number of rooms be decreased or the number of days increased with just a few contestants left?
Hi Laura! In our finale, we decided to give each team a few extra behind-the-scenes carpenters and helpers to make sure the rooms got finished! I wanted to make sure that our finale really knocked it out of the park, and with only two competitors that can be tough, so we thought this was a good solution.

HGTV Facebook fan Barbara asks, “Haven’t some of those contestants been on HGTV’s other shows? If so, which ones?” You have a good memory, Barbara! A few of the competitors had appeared on The White Room Challenge. I believe that the ones who were on were Oliver, Torche, David, and Monica.

Torche seemed genuinely surprised when Mark was sent home. Did Jonathan have a tough time making that decision? Jonathan had a really tough time with this decision because both Mark and Torche were such hard workers and so talented. It was also tough because Torche was so sick, he was nervous about whether or not she’d have the strength to really keep going. But when we looked back at the entire season, and each individual contribution from every episode, he decide Torche was his stronger team member.

What was the funniest or most memorable moment on the set this week?
This episode was absolutely insane behind the scenes. Torche wasn’t the only one who had the flu on set. In the course of one day, six crew members had to go home because they also got the flu — and they were part of the crew for Team Jonathan — so it felt like a “contamination zone” over there. Those of us who didn’t get sick were wearing masks and washing our hands constantly! It was really crazy…
