HGTV Star
Have you ever wondered what happens on the HGTV Star set when the cameras stop rolling? Or what David and the judges really think about who went home? Wonder no more! This year, interior photographer and HGTV fan Dan Collopy will take you behind the scenes on the set of HGTV Star. Did I mention he’s a former Australian soap star?

HGTV Star Behind the Scenes Host Dan Collopy
He’ll have access to the control room, the sound guys, the contestants, the producers, and of course, the judges. He’ll get answers you’ve never had access to before — and show you those funny behind-the-scenes moments that might otherwise be left on the cutting room floor.
Join Dan every week here on HGTV.com to find out what you didn’t see on TV. We kind of love him (and his accent!) — watch his bio video to find out why you will, too.

All About Design Star
Each week, I chat with Design Star All Stars producer Loren Ruch about the best behind-the-scenes moments from the show. Read on to go behind the scenes on the judges’ final decision. Plus, find out where you’ll see Leslie on HGTV!

How did you decide to use shipping containers for this week’s challenge?
Our executive producer mentioned to me that shipping containers were a hot new trend for second homes and even some primary residences around the country, so we thought “why not?!” We’ve already done glass houses, tiny houses and yurts, so it felt like a natural transition to try shipping containers!
From a guest on the blog: How did the judges’ come to the final decision for Design Star All Stars? Do they use a numerical rating system, a checklist, a compilation of before and after photos, what is the criteria they use to come up with the winning design(er)?
I wish it were that simple! It was a plain and simple long (and I mean looooong) and drawn out conversation comparing pros and cons, camera challenges and design challenges and the scope of work from the entire season. We also have a big notebook prepared for the panel featuring each designers photos of each challenge, and we show them the camera challenge from the current episode. This episode was not cut and dry at all, so it was a very heated conversation. Hilari had been such a dynamic and fun personality with great designs, Tom was such a class act with an upscale taste level, and Leslie was a bundle of energy with great designs to match — but ultimately I think that in the end, Leslie’s Murphy bed is what threw her over the top!

All About Design Star
Each week, I chat with Design Star All Stars producer Loren Ruch about the best on-set moments and what you didn’t see on the show. Read on for his dish on The Facts of Life set makeovers!

How did you decide to use The Facts of Life sets as inspiration for this week’s episode?
I happen to be friends with Mindy Cohn (and have known her for about 15 years), and I am also an enormous fan of ‘80’s sitcoms – as are many of our viewers! On last year’s blog and message boards many people asked me if we’d ever consider doing a ‘set’, so I thought this would be our chance. What could be more fun than recreating my favorite show of all time, with a wonderful friend on set, and modernize it for a contemporary audience?!
What was it like for Mindy Cohn to revisit updated versions of the sets from her youth?
Everyone fell in LOVE with Mindy on the set! She told so many fun stories, and cracked us up the entire time she was there. She told us that she literally spent ‘ages 14-20’ on that set, so it was really fun to be with her on a trip down memory lane.
Any hints about the All Stars finale?
Sure…why not! If you thought yurts or tiny houses were fun, just wait until you see what our designers do with shipping containers! You just may want to buy one for yourself!
