Challenge 5: Homes of the Brave

For this challenge, the designers gave back to two deserving military families. After a grueling 22 hours, only five designers are left standing.

Spoiler Alert! If you don’t want to know what happened, please don’t click through.

Antonio, Dan and Torie transformed the living area of the Olsons, who wanted a warm, multifunctional room for the whole family. The designers used two shades of blue to create a neutral atmosphere and added contemporary furniture for a streamlined effect. Vern felt the designers met the Olsons’ needs for a comfortable, adaptable environment, while Candice loved the texture that the panels brought to the wall.

Nathan, Lonni and Jason made over the Maldonado family’s space, who were looking for a modern style, but mostly importantly wanted it to be functional. Nathan decided to build an entertainment center, which took almost the entire 22 hours they had for the challenge. Lonni chose to enhance one wall with a chevron pattern, and Vern felt it was the best part of the room.

Even though the judges felt that Jason and Nathan both had reasons to be eliminated, Nathan’s lack of time management was his ultimate undoing, and he was sent home.

What do you think? Did the judges make the right decision?

  1. I am addicted to HGTV, and Antonio is the only one of this group that I will watch in a new TV show. He is extremely talented and hard working. I am sure he won't let me down. I just hope the judges don't let me down.

    • I'm sure HGTV would love working with him as much as all the other contestants obviously have! Ha Ha. I'd love to see that! They'll be cursing themselves.

    • Me too!!!! Just love Antonio and his work. I don't understand why everybody is so negative about his attitude. He was the one who steeped up to help Lonni during the white room challenge and he did apologize in this episode. Tough exterior, softie inside, and a huge amount of talent – that's Antonio.

    • I'm with you – I'm beginning to think I need to join HGTV Anonymous, for my addiction to their programming. I often watch shows I've already seen two or three times already!

  2. I watched to see if Dan was going to continue he whinning this week. I was bored……………because it was so perdictable. Now that they don't have poor Tashica to kick around and blame the paranas started feeding on eachother. …….PERDICTABLE!!!

I also wanted to see if any reference to the poor behavior of the judges would be addressed by way of some type of apology statement……………………we got nothing which means that by its silence HGtV as a network is condoning the behavior, So, my choice is that for me …………. this show has been cancelled.

ktg on August 17, 2009 at 3:13 am
    • GOOD FOR YOU..THE JUDGES BEHAVIOR LAST WEEK WAS TERRIBLE AND NOT TO ADDRESS IT IS EVEN WORST. SEEMS LIKE THEY WANT TO BE LIKE AMERICAN IDOL..PAULA ABDUL IS AVAILABLE; AS FOR ME HGTV HAS BEEN CANCELLED AND ITS SMIRF VERN WITH IT.

Yvette on August 17, 2009 at 3:59 am
    • Yeah, right. I predict you'll be in here whining about Tashica again next week, and the week after, and so on. Maybe you ARE Tashica.

Jeffers on August 17, 2009 at 8:30 am
      • That was so rude and quite unnecessary. It says a lot about your character.

        ktg1 on August 17, 2009 at 6:40 pm
    • I thought you weren't going to watch it after last week? Would you just leave this party already!

Jay on August 17, 2009 at 4:12 pm
    • Seriously, the taping has been done for months. Did you want a public service annoucement> Give it up AND move on down the road….

      susanmarie04 on August 18, 2009 at 2:34 am
    • I would have liked to see some reference to the mean way that Tashica was treated by the other contestants — you note I did not say designers. I hope Tashica will do well elsewhere but I don't think she was nearly as bad as Lonnie and I think she would have done much better given the chance. She didn't finish the white room and had it not been for two of her teammates she would have looked worse than she did. Why wasn't she sent packing? This is a very disappointing season. Of course, none of the other winners are in the class with David Bronstead but most of them had more talent than any of these people.

Eleanor on August 20, 2009 at 9:50 am
    • I, too, was disappointed by the judges in the way that they let Tashica go.

  4. I'm starting to really dislike the drama they try to throw into the commercials by twisting people's words, I was worried sick for a week that Antonio was going to go home for not painting nasty tan!! I'm not glad that Nate went, but I mean he has been going downhill after that awesome white wall challenge… I still think that Dan is going to win, without a doubt (:

Ashley Jean on August 17, 2009 at 3:14 am
    • I agree! I think Dan should get the TV show and Antonio the online (web based) show.

Linda on August 17, 2009 at 4:03 am
    • I agree about the sound bites twisting peoples words around. I hate that.

Otsie on August 17, 2009 at 2:16 pm
    • I hope Dan Wins. I don't agree with a word ktg said. Dan is not a whiner; he merely states the facts. He also seems very personable.

LucieC on August 17, 2009 at 9:10 pm
    • But seriously, wouldn't it have been fun if he had been sent home????? DRAMA, DRAMA, DRAMA. Made you watch. Sorry, I am just feeling evil tonight.

      susanmarie04 on August 18, 2009 at 2:35 am
  5. So glad and impressed that Antonio stuck to his guns. I don't understand how people confuse passion and conviction for being obnoxious or a bully. I hope he wins, he is the only reason I watch.

    FM_guest on August 17, 2009 at 3:14 am
    • Compassion and conviction is one thing, but being a team player requires compromise. He just did what HE wanted to do … discarding what the other team members thought. He needs to get along with the others (regardless of what he thinks of them) or he'll go home because of that!

Linda on August 17, 2009 at 4:05 am
    • @FM_guest
It's great that he sticks to his guns, thats what got him brownie points with the judges in the 1st episode (the pink geese). He's just plain awesome!!!

catLoversInc on August 17, 2009 at 7:48 am
    • I think the point is he should have had that arguement during the design phase. To agree to go after three colors and only come home with two was wrong. Let's face it, he laughed so hard when saying he forgot it you know he was lying. He's not a team player and cannot be trusted. He's just lucky the room, thanks in large part to Torrie's ability to accessorize properly, was such a success.

SusanS on August 17, 2009 at 8:50 am
      • I see your point. But there was also the possibility that he caved, and would have been criticized for not arguing for color, which like it or not, the judges approved and HO seemed to like. I imagine he must be frustrated about being left out of the design aspect and often being relegated to carpentry and the like. There have been lots of instances when he has come through (Lonni's white room, a finished kitchen, and thinking of the returning dad/vet with the TV set up) so I'm still rooting for Antonio. :D

        FM_guest on August 18, 2009 at 12:09 am
    • AM I the only person watching who is TOTALLY sick of Torie's complaining and whining? Does no one else see it? I think Antonia understands people so much better than her. He listened to what the client said and it wasn't JUST TAN…………she mentioned tan and the editing put it out front simply because all Torie could do was focus on one little thing the client said. She needs her show cancelled

      J.R. on August 18, 2009 at 12:28 am
    • I like Antonio also; he'll be able to give a new look to HGTV if he wins

lnv on August 18, 2009 at 2:00 am
    • You can't confuse being honest and forthright with being deceitful with what he intended to do either, huh? He is a bully!

Kathy on August 28, 2009 at 11:54 pm
  6. Throughout the season, I've thought that Antonio is not quite as obnoxious as Rob was. No longer. His design skills don't make up for the rolling eyes, condescension to teammates, and otherwise negative attitude. Unlike what the judges think, I will not watch Antonio's show if he wins. I wouldn't want him as my designer and am not interested in anything he has to say.

tbchad on August 17, 2009 at 3:18 am
    • I totally agree!

Linda on August 17, 2009 at 4:06 am
    • he was dead on. tan walls would not have pleased the homeowner. neutral shades are varied, and she said she was open minded. i think antonio is very sweet, like a big teddy bear.

teri on August 17, 2009 at 5:15 am
      • @teri
        I totally agree with you!!!!!

catLoversInc on August 17, 2009 at 7:49 am
    • I agree. Of the remaining group I find Antonio not only hard to watch and listen to, I don't care for his work and he is the only one of the group that dresses like he's ready to sit around the tube with his buddies drinking beer and watching football instead of presenting himself in a professional manner.
There's a time and place for everything. Sad to see Nathan go. He has been a solid contributor and at times shown real genius – he got booted for one tactical error while others are allowed to get by with poor to mediocre contributions every week.

      sammie1411 on August 17, 2009 at 2:28 pm
    • Amen. People who are creative geniuses don't go as far as they might when they have a "my way or the highway" attitude. That's how Antonio sounds.

Nan on August 17, 2009 at 11:37 pm
    • I agree. While Antonio is an excellent designer and has the potenial to win it all, his lack of team spirit will break him in the end. I do see him surviving for a another week or too. He is quite good.

  7. Don't quite know why Torie made such a stink, when the owner said that they weren't "against" any color choice. It would have been a mistake to paint the room tan when everything was tan in the first place.
Liked the 2 television concept. Loved the teaching area.

From the other room, I loved the chevron pattern on the wall. Didn't really like Nathan's entertaiinment center and definitely agree that he should have gone home. Have the feeling that Jason will be next, because, so far, they don't seem to be impressed with his design style.

I didn't feel he did as poorly as they said. I thought this was a nightmare to shop for, because the rooms were so small and needed to serve so many functions. He used wisdom to buy the right size, even if it wasn't as modern as they wanted. Bummer about the desk.

    C.S. on August 17, 2009 at 3:19 am
    • I loved Nathan's Dining Room and White Room, but in retrospect, much of what he does might be "canned" — designs he's already done, or ideas he's prepared for the competition….

In contrast, Lonnie's wall of chevrons demonstrated she can think on her feet, although I had the same question about bringing work motifs into the design of your haven ….

IMHO, Jason should have been sent home long ago. His contributions to team challenges have been underwhelming: shopping and accessorizing mistakes, not running to a home improvement store to get a rod for curtains … Unless he shows up bigtime next week, it will be curtains for him….

Antonio has a strong personality, but he knows what he's doing and would be suitable for a show. I loved his White Room, but once again, the idea was probably canned. But he is smart enough to learn, so I look forward to more of his designs ….

Torrie comes off as a professional, blessed with creativity, practicality and the ability to both work alone and with others. As far as her hosting abilities, time will tell — she may need to get more assertive ….

Dan, a strong contender, can win this if he doesn't muck things up — he'll still need to wow the judges in the remaining weeks ….

psychick on August 17, 2009 at 6:16 pm
    • Agree with you on Jason…editted to look the blumbling idiot….did most of the work on this one while nate fiddled the enterrainment center and lonni dabbled the tired military emblems!

      Cassie243 on August 17, 2009 at 9:12 pm
    • I disagree! Nathan did not deserve 2 go home! First off the chevron pattern was his idea. It just didn't air that way. Secondly who else on his team was up 2 the task on the construction of the entertainment center! HELLO! No one! Jason should have gone home this week!!

      deb1019 on August 18, 2009 at 12:42 pm
  8. Nathan should have not gone home! Where is the judges judgement? Jason, should have gone. The furniture choices where horrible! Anyone who nails curtains to the wall should not be called a designer. Lonni wall was not great. The design was thoughtful, but it's something you would get tired of looking at daily. Totally out of place with the furniture that Jason purchased. The judges made a bad choice tonight.. If you look at past challenges, Jason's designs has been bland.

Candice Olson Rocks! She's the best designer on HGTV!

Spencer on August 17, 2009 at 3:20 am
    • These are supposed to be professionals. Jason's choices weren't anything out of the ordinary and he should have been gived the boot weeks ago. While shopping he really didn't take the family's wishes into account, not to mention totally stripping them of any privacy. Lonnie's wall would drive me crazy after a couple of days. Thank goodness it was only on a short wall.

I agree!!! Candice Olson is the best!!!

LEL on August 17, 2009 at 7:17 pm
    • Don't agree with you…..Jason managed time, did the work while his team managed their personal projects. Shopping in LA is not like running down to your local WalMart or Cosco……..

Calridge on August 17, 2009 at 9:15 pm
    • I agree- Love her designs and sense of luxury she adds to every room.

  10. I am a fan of this show. I love the new judges and respect their design sense tremendously…..I am sooooo disappointed in these designers!! Do any of them know how to style a room!? It is really awful. $10,000 and hardly any accessories and lighting? The area rugs were eithe too small, missing(dining room) or oddly placed. You seriously could not go to Target and get a curtain rod?? That dining table styling was atrocious. I do like the green couch and think that color needed to be pulled into the room more. What do these people have against pattern? That wall was brilliant however there needed to be more in both rooms. I am going to keep watching but I really hope to see batter designs from them in the next episodes.

Kristin on August 17, 2009 at 3:21 am
    • YES, what DO they have against pattern!

I thought that Torie should have bought some fabrics with patterns. Not all, but some pillows or curtains.

      C.S. on August 17, 2009 at 3:38 am
    • Kristin, I agree with everything you said. I feel this season's designers miss the mark on how to spend the money creatively and the curtain thing had me going "What!!!". Rugs and lighting can really pull a room together but the overall design on both rooms is bland and nothing jumps out at me to say i would want anyone to have their own show except….. Antonio has the bad boy "not gonna play with the other kids" mentality but has a strong creative presence that makes you stick with him. It's always fun to watch what he'll do next. Dan has great woodworking skills but is lacking the TV star wit and exuberance that is needed with your own show. Still I am addicted to Design Star. Hope it gets better in the weeks ahead.

      presti4 on August 17, 2009 at 5:41 pm
    • I totally agree! I hope that future seasons (if they are any) wil have designers with a little more common sense AND creativity. I didn't watch Seasons 2 or 3, and I'm not sure how much longer I'll be watching this one.
