Challenge 5: Homes of the Brave

For this challenge, the designers gave back to two deserving military families. After a grueling 22 hours, only five designers are left standing.

Spoiler Alert! If you don’t want to know what happened, please don’t click through.

Antonio, Dan and Torie transformed the living area of the Olsons, who wanted a warm, multifunctional room for the whole family. The designers used two shades of blue to create a neutral atmosphere and added contemporary furniture for a streamlined effect. Vern felt the designers met the Olsons’ needs for a comfortable, adaptable environment, while Candice loved the texture that the panels brought to the wall.

Nathan, Lonni and Jason made over the Maldonado family’s space, who were looking for a modern style, but mostly importantly wanted it to be functional. Nathan decided to build an entertainment center, which took almost the entire 22 hours they had for the challenge. Lonni chose to enhance one wall with a chevron pattern, and Vern felt it was the best part of the room.

Even though the judges felt that Jason and Nathan both had reasons to be eliminated, Nathan’s lack of time management was his ultimate undoing, and he was sent home.

What do you think? Did the judges make the right decision?

  1. I loved the room that Dan, Tori and Antonio did and I'm so happy that Antonio did not get the tan paint. I think Tori needs to get her ears checked seeing as how the client said she was up for anything when it came to color. She may prefer nuetrals but like both Dan and Antonio said that's what they were there to introduce new ideas to the client.

I'm a little disappointed to see Nathan go but spending all that time on one item was wasteful. I'm not a fan of Jason's, can't wait to see him be canceled!!

HGTVFan on August 17, 2009 at 3:21 am
    • The client also said WARM colors! Blues are the EXACT OPPOSITE of warm. Torie works with clients on a daily basis. Dan is a bartender and Antonio plays on movie sets all day. It's the difference between being a professional and someone who is self-centered and only worried about winning the competition.

    • Can someone please tell me where Tori found that green sectional. It's exactly what I've been searching for over the past 10 days. I've just painted my walls a similar light blue & would like a streamlined sectional not exceeding 7.5 feet.

    • I really loved the room also. I am so happy he didn't get the tan either!! Tori definately needs to get her ears checked, because she did say she was open to anything!!! I really like both Dan and Antonio. Jason did what exactly? The little wall memorial?? How lame was that, I hope he goes soon!!!

  2. Antonio has it! He will make for great tv; a little brash, but a great designer and personality. I was so worried for him this week!

Tiffany on August 17, 2009 at 3:21 am
    • Antonio is a bully. He may have talent but his behavior is inexcusable.
Good-bye, Antonio The end does not justify the means. Liz

Liz on August 17, 2009 at 1:51 pm
    • No I disagree……Dan has it! He would make for much better TV as he has far better personality!!
And he is a great designer!!!

      nmsl3 on August 17, 2009 at 9:00 pm
    • He is a little brash, but he is a good designer. I think he has trouble working in a team setting though, but that is something he can work on. It's not his fault that some people have no vision, I think he is mostly just really pasionate and that shows in his work

      deirdre96 on August 19, 2009 at 6:26 pm
  3. Was that Nathan's first "carpentry" of the show? I am thinking he doesn't do it enough to understand how long it takes to get things done. Clearly Antonio has an excellent concept of time, and Dan has a lot of experience. Lots of tension on both teams!

    C.S. on August 17, 2009 at 3:23 am
    • They should have called this season Construction Star! Everyone who builds gets kudos so Nathan was just trying. The judges should have left it to Design.

      photo3 on August 17, 2009 at 7:07 am
    • Nathan did say that he was a furniture designer; therefore he should have some idea of construction time.

  4. I personally do not like blue. No shade. A shade of green could have been better and closer to what she had asked for IF he thought he was not GOD. As I understood. she wanted the elegant white on white, tan on tan color palet. Of course what she got was better than she had, & is bight and clean. But what would they have done IF it had been me, and would not have said Yes ( even after a clean wall)as you see I do not like blue. Antonio should have been off today. I surely hope that he does not win in the end. He can do some things, but does NOT have the designer capability to listen well enough. He is a good carpenter designer in that sense, but NOT the led man. This show just cut his throat for me and I voted for him first at the beginning. But as even he was told by his co workers they could not trust him to shop. And I totally agree. He is not the same quality as ANY OF THE OTHER DESIGNERS ON THIS HGTV CHANNEL NETWORK. IF YOU REWATCH THIS YOU JUDGES YOU SHOULD SEE WHAT i SAW TONIGHT. i AM MADDER NOW THAN WHEN i BEGAN THIS COMMENT. rET. rUTHIE cRAIG, eVANSVILLE, iNDIANA

    • i read somewhere (i think angelo said it) that blue is the most popular color for design.

  5. Great show, wonderfully talented judges! I like seeing what the designers will come up with in such a short time period, it's truly fascinating! As to the designers that are "cancelled", it's all a part of the game they signed up for. Thak you HGTV for entertaining me.

ahmahsheila on August 17, 2009 at 3:24 am
  6. I'm noticing there is not a single post remarking upon the fact that there was not the hoped-for apology from the judges for their shameful behavior last week. And I'm assuming it's because HGTV is pulling those posts. My guess is that this comment won't last long.

Sashmo on August 17, 2009 at 3:24 am
    • This show was taped several weeks ago; therefore, the judges could not know about the incredibly over the top comments posted about the elimination last week demanding everything from an apology to their heads on platters!!! I found many of the comments far worse than anything any judge has said to any contestant in the four years of DS! Go back a watch the previous years and see if this isn't true!!

Diane on August 17, 2009 at 3:46 am
      • Diane, you are exactly right. The comments made me raise an eyebrow. And people keep forgetting that this show, as well as David's vlogs, were all recorded weeks ago and can't be altered.

Lizzie on August 17, 2009 at 4:42 am
    • My guess is that you're psychotic and need to get over it.

Jeffers on August 17, 2009 at 8:36 am
    • I made a remark about it too and am shocked that no apology was made. There is a way to edit in an apology if they wanted to give one.

What also amazes me is this character Jeffers who called you psychotic. He also left a nasty comment to me. This guy is out of control and needs to be blocked from the blogs. No one wants to read his/her/its' nasty remarks.

  7. I really, really think that Lonni is too slow. She talks slow, she shops too slow, she decorates too slow. She couldn't finish her white room on time.
Last week, she forgot the money and during the same episode they (Lonni & Nathan) shopped all day leaving Tashica and Dan in the garage.
And tonight she stayed on the blue wall almost as long as Nathan took on the entertainment center. The one thing I can say about Jason, he put in the effort to shop, decorate and execute (hodge-podge or not).

SweetLesa on August 17, 2009 at 3:26 am
    • I agree with you about Lonni but who cares about the effort in shopping if everything Jason picked out was horrible.

gabby on August 17, 2009 at 3:56 am
    • just because the editors focus on her doing one thing doesn't mean that's all she did. and you don't watch very well, she painted, helped nate, carried stuff into the rooms. cleaned. don't be such a sheep. led around by the editing with no mind to think for yourself!

guest on August 17, 2009 at 7:01 am
      • It appeared to me that she painted, stop to help Nathan, painted a little more, stopped to help Nathan, painted a little more and stopped to help nathan…etc. it took so long because she couldn't get a rythmn. I am amazed that so many people have such a prson dislike of certain designers and judges. It television.

donnash on August 17, 2009 at 9:43 pm
    • Wow. Did you not see Dan forget the $? Her white room was finished but with a different design than her plan A. And she and Nathan got stuck in traffic, not in the stores all day. If you're going to comment, at least watch the show. Then be aware than editing means they don't show you everything.

      photo3 on August 17, 2009 at 7:13 am
      • Her white room was finished because Antonio and Torie finished it. If it weren't for those two the white would've been a total disaster. She maybe a good designer, but she has time issues. She's not at home doing work for a client, she's on TV, a totally different genre that requires different work ethics.
You've got to think on your feet and hustle while thinking.
And another thing, when you are shopping with the clock ticking, you've got to include traffic. If you have a job to go to, would'nt you leave home early enough, in case traffic is a problem?
I watched the show twice, the 10 p.m. hour and the repeat and guess what? She was still too slow.

SweetLesa on August 17, 2009 at 3:09 pm
  8. Why are you all so upset by the preview? It did its job: got you to watch the show! Antonio's passion played well tonight. Great TV. Sponsors should be happy.
I am a total HGTV addict and I'm amazed that two of my LEAST favorite shows' hosts are judges…Vern and Genevieve. Ah well, they must have been available.
Nate was the right one to go home. Jason will be next. Lonnie's chevrons were the best thing in that room and they were awful.

Cindy on August 17, 2009 at 3:26 am
    • I LOVED the chevrons! Very creative and different!

guest on August 17, 2009 at 7:02 am
      • Maybe the chevrons would've been better suited to a smaller/non-focal wall.

Wally on August 17, 2009 at 7:45 am
    • Agree with you about Vern and Genevieve! But don't you just love Candice…no money spared in her designs!

sue on August 17, 2009 at 12:31 pm
  9. Great episode!!! Nate was sent packing and rightfully so. Time was of the essence and he spent too much on an entertainment unit which served little purpose. Lonni did ok this week and Jason should be praised for all of the shopping and picking up the slack. The room was not very impressive, but the family was happy and that's what matters most.
Antonio—Good for you for stepping up and taking charge of the color palette. Loved all the furniture you constructed. I thought the room looked very nice and cozy. Torie, great furniture and accessories, and Dan the space you created for the children's therapy sessions was just precious. Well Done!!!

    Looking forward to next week…

Vanessa on August 17, 2009 at 3:30 am
    • Jason's shopping choices ruined the room! Are you people blind? Even if he put the desk together would it have really made the room better? AND Lonni's wall took JUST AS LONG AS Nathans piece. Jason should have went home because he is an awful designer. Him and lonni are skating by. What has either of them done thus far to make them design star??? At least Nates white room, dining room and kitchen challenge were all great.

gabby on August 17, 2009 at 3:59 am
      • I agree, gabby.

Lysha on August 17, 2009 at 4:02 am
      • the wall didn't take as long or she wouldn't have had the time to do all the other stuff she did. were you WATCHING!!!?????

guest on August 17, 2009 at 7:04 am
      • If I'm not mistaken, Nate's Kitchen challenge leadership and lack of overall abilities to get things done was very revealing.

Wally on August 17, 2009 at 7:50 am
      • I'm not a big fan of Lonni's wall. I think it is just too busy. But part of the reason it took so long was because Nathan kept calling her outside to help him. So when he said it didn't take 22 hours to build (because it was finished with 1 1/2 hours to spare) was a falsehood, because it took two people working on it, so it was actually much more than 22 hours. Jason spent way too much time shopping and was of little help in doing any of the work.

SusanS on August 17, 2009 at 9:01 am
    • I thought Dan's attention to the need for a therapy space was good. However, I think all three designers should have taken more time to talk to the owner about the specific needs of children with Autism. Different colors, textures, patterns, noise, etc., can all impact these children in positive and negative ways. But all in all, I liked the room, thought Antonio was a bit heavy handed although I did see his point and Torrie's accessory choices were great. I also think Jason should have gone, not Nat.

      K. Anderson on August 17, 2009 at 4:25 pm
  10. Antonio, Dan, Torie, Good Team WORK!!!! I liked the room that you all did. Challenge 5.
Oh, and Antonio, you played quite the role for the judges on stage didn't you??? Sad to see you getting the tiff going again when waiting back stage for the Judges to send someone home. Good designer but you make me sick!
Nathan, sorry you had to go home. All and all it seemed right this week though. Lonni , Nice wall there. Vern is right it did make the room. Jason. The Judges said it all.
    Dan still has my vote.

Millie on August 17, 2009 at 3:31 am
    • What team work? Dan and Tori worked as a team, but Antonio did whatever HE wanted without any regard for his teammates or the homeowner.
