Challenge 8: Celebrity Homes

The final three face off as they decorate a home office for Kathy Griffin, a guest bedroom for Tiffani Thiessen and a nursery for Jason Priestley.

after-designers-celebrities

Spoiler Alert! If you don’t want to know what happened, please don’t click through.

With only 30 hours and $20,000, the designers had to create the space of their celebrity’s dreams.

kathy-room-after

Antonio was paired with Kathy Griffin, who needed an office space for Team Griffin, her three full-time employees, and wanted a modern minimal look. He showed off his innovative style with custom-built desks, a fresh shade of purple and a cool map of the United States, where Kathy can map out her tour dates.

jason-room-after

Jason Priestley and his wife, Naomi, needed Dan to transform their guest room into a nursery for their second child. Dan created a sophisticated nursery with a touch of a nautical theme. He designed a unique architectural feature of little boats for the ceiling and even showed off his artistic side with custom artwork.

tiffani-room-after1

Tiffani Thiessen and her husband, Brady Smith, wanted a contemporary and eco-friendly design for their guest room. Lonni mixed the old and new with a gorgeous piece of reclaimed wood for the headboard and a textural grass cloth wall treatment. Dark wood floors and eclectic accessories completed the look.

In the end, Lonni ran out of time to hang her headboard, which left the judges wondering if she could plan and multitask, so she was sent home.

lonni

It’s down to the final two! Who do you think is going to win the big prize: Antonio or Dan?

  1. You have got to be freakin kidding me! For the second week ina row the wrong person went home. Antonio should have gone this week. What a joke of a show!

    • I agree. Lonni's room was the best and her on camera skills are better than Dan's.

RSm on September 7, 2009 at 3:06 am
      • Ditto, What a joke. The fix is in. They must want another man host. While Dan's room was great. He can't host and Lonni's designs have been better than his for the whole season! Antionio's was poorly shopped and dressed for. Why didn't he add a pop of color with binders?

      • Yes, Lonni is the true star here – just how many "male bartenders/models" is HGTV going to strut across the stage? Not everyone likes these types….

crazy bad ad HGTV on September 8, 2009 at 8:17 pm
    • You are so absolutely correct. You must be able to design to be a design star and I do not want to see someone with sooo many tats hosting a show. Sorry Lonni you got ripped off!!!!!

      • I was traveling and missed last night's show, but it looks as if I didn't miss a lot. I am with all the others on Antonio, I will not watch a show if he is chosen as Design Star this season. I have watched HGTV since their start and some of their choices have been bad. I work during the day and enjoyed watching HGTV at night, but not now, because all they have on is about buying or selling homes. All of the good shows are not on anymore, ie Gardening by the yard or for that matter very little about gardening. That is what the next Design Star should be for, is gardening.

        • I agree with you. I am so SICK of all the real estate shows in the evenings. I'd much rather see some DIY, home decor, gardening, or crafting in the evenings. I used to watch HGTV almost every evening, now there's no reason to do so.

        • I've been meaning to comment on that to HGTV myself. What ever happened to Design. This isnt RETV or Real Estate TV. I no longer watch at night like I used to because it is all sales and no design!!

skketch on September 8, 2009 at 8:27 pm
          • I actually emailed them about this. I seldom watch in the evening anymore. If I see one more House Hunters, I'll scream. All the women talking about closet space and granite countertops and rooms being too small.

      • totally agree! Lonnie was FABULOUS!! loved her feature wall & the whole concept was amazing. Dan's giggle has to GO! & Antonio… his room was good but the scale of the stuff was way too small! scale is a huge part of design & he didn't pull it off.

Dan who is Just another David Clone Should Have gone last week then it would have been Torrie and Antonio in the final 2 with Antonio winning out…

      • If Dan reminds everyone of David Bromstad, then that is a huge positive for him. There's room for another designer with artistic ability and vision. What we DON'T need is an old, obnoxious, trailer-trash type guy with his "dees-dems and dos" speech. He has also been ungracious and unsupportive of his fellow designers in the green room and has been a total egomaniacal bully when working with others. Hey Antonio….cool it…..you're not that good.

        watcher247 on September 7, 2009 at 7:30 pm
        • Right on!!! I wish there were more David Bromstad- like talents on HGTV. I see absolutely no redeeming qualities in Antonio. He lacks talent, class, and common human decency. His appearance is a distraction and his treatment of others unforgivable. If the HGTV execs want him because he is so different from the others, they need to consider the saying, "Sometimes the road less traveled is less traveled for a reason." Antonio does not deserve this and they know it.

Ann on September 8, 2009 at 5:57 am
          • Antonio has taken every opportunity he could get to stab every other designer in the back, always trying to make everyone else look bad so he could look good by comparison. I had to watch that scene in the van a few times before I was sure that he purposely confused the issue of the $5000 vs. $10000 for the pergola that Tori had given Dan. All the other seasons, the designers were always friends and supportive of each other, but Antonio is only supportive of Antonio.

Brenda Spaeth on September 7, 2009 at 3:18 am
      • the labradoodle comment was not an insult. It was funny! even Lonni laughed

llk on September 7, 2009 at 4:53 am
      • Candice Olson has a lot of gaul calling Lonni a dog – I am really sick of her show anyways – it is all just old reruns and repeats for the most part – and her pricey design line – forget it!

bad for business on September 8, 2009 at 8:22 pm
        • I have always loved Candice's designs even when they are my style, they turn out beautiful and elegant. On her show, Devine Design, she is so very sweet, kind and funloving. This is why she had made the (meant to be "silly") labradoodle comment. HOWEVER, I am appalled that she is so supportive of Antonio bullcrap talking (it is not hosting – he just runs his egotistic mouth). Also, I work from my home office and I would never want to have to work in that cold, hard, poorly designed office that Antonio created. Uck!

Dan is very predictable, and I just don't think I could get into anooottthher catalogue home show. With Antonio, you get innovation. I would look forward to tuning in! Hey, in the end, who knows?

sharon on September 7, 2009 at 3:10 pm

      • I totally agree, Robin. I watch HGTV all day when I am home. This show has just been axed.
I will not watch a host who giggles all the time especially when it is a man or a man whose speech is barely understandable, besides, who is going to watch Antonio design a room, when you are trying to figure out his tattoos? Dan should have been gone last week!

      • Let's look at Lonni's creativity. Blank wallpaper turned into a focal point, that awesome headboard (despite not making the wall) and layers of texture. Thats called design. Antonio: purple paint, a map, 3 desks and no wow factor. Hello!!!

Penelope on September 8, 2009 at 9:08 pm
    • I couldn't agree more. It's clear that the choice to send Lonni home had nothing to do with her ability to deliver great design and a flawless presentation. That the judges would use the headboard as the basis for sending her home is absurd. I've lost all respect for this show, and I'll never bother watching it again.

Toq on September 7, 2009 at 4:39 am

Sue on September 8, 2009 at 4:49 am
    • I couldn't agree more. It seems like they picked Antonio weeks ago to win this, and despite his terrible attitude, inability to work with others, deplorable hosting skills and inconsistent designs, he is still there! Antonio's design this week fell flat and wasn't close to a designer level. Yet, he's still there. I can't watch this show any more…

Leslie on September 7, 2009 at 12:28 pm
      • Ok Leslie, who is 'they'? Antonio has been a gentleman from the get go. For those that live in closets, know that there are designers that do have tattoos, are not gay, are not women, and equate to the AVERAGE person. You know…average? There is a whole generation that HGTV needs to capture, and that is the group that Antonio will apeal to.

gonzo on September 8, 2009 at 12:00 am
        • That's all we need on HGTV – a designer who is mediocre at best. If Antonio's design represents a new generation, then please help us!

Sue on September 8, 2009 at 4:53 am
        • Leslie didn't say anything about Antonio's looks, tattoos, sexual preference. She talked about his skills needed to win Design Star – His design skills, hosting skills, attitutude and ability to work with others.

It's hard to say what an "average" person is, but Antonio's designs have been average. A Design Star should be better than that.

mowgo on September 8, 2009 at 6:21 pm
      • I agree Leslie. Antonio hasn't designed anything well when left on his own. The white room challenge was nothing but a paint job. The kid's room was lame. I could have done that with one trip to Home Depot. And this week he paints a room purple, shoves desks against the walls, and buys random furniture and accessories. Where is the thought and creativity in any of it. He lacks everything this show should be about, and yet the producers have decided we will love him because he's different? Guess again HGTV. It really is too bad. My daughter and I used to love watching this together, but now we are just sick of it.

Ann on September 8, 2009 at 6:11 am
    • Dan won this week hands down; I thought his room was very creative, and well executed. Lonnie’s room was very nice. I thought with a custom piece she should have made sure it fit the minute it arrived, waiting to the last minute was a bad call however, I would rather have her room in my house over Antonio’s office. The only thing I liked was the map, and that was not over the top. Obviously, he does not have to sit in an office all day. Who wants to face the wall, and have someone approach their back? If it were my office, I would have turned all the desks facing out to the center, had a return L to house equipment, if space permitted. Cubbies are for children in kindergarten! Just because it was an office, that does not exclude art on the walls. About the color choice, I know Vern is correct Purple is popular right now however, if Cathy has any male assistants I think they would prefer a different color. To quote David from last week, “Where was the design?” It is obvious that HGTV wants Antonio, but I could not sit and watch him on a show.

Guest on September 7, 2009 at 12:48 pm
      • Your evaluation of Antonio's design is right on. This was a total failure as an office. I think the client was disappointed as well. There wasn't anything in there that said,"designer". As far as Lonnie's fate……in the real world, she would have been able to get the headboard up. There aren't such unreal time constraints. She did an absolutely beautiful job and has the class and poise to host. It's too bad that Antonio's unorthodox manner is clouding the judges opinions. Ultimately, we watch HGTV for ideas and Antonio hasn't had one. I wouldn't watch his show.

        watcher247 on September 7, 2009 at 7:21 pm
      • Hi guest,

Was she happy with what he did? Was it with in budget? Was his design done on time?

Regarding offices, yes, there are many way's to work an office design. I'd say it's fairly obvious to me that you don't work, nor have been in the media/entertainment industry. What he created is perfect for a collaborative work space.

Cubbies work. For an example, look at TMZ. That show is filmed at the location where 'work' is done. Looks like a classroom? yep. But that is the way collaborative work is done.

gonzo on September 8, 2009 at 12:10 am
        • "What he created is perfect for a collaborative work space. "

LOL! With their backs to each other? With no conference area?

TMZ is were "work" is done. LOL!!!!!!!!!!

mowgo on September 8, 2009 at 6:31 pm
        • not really good for collaborative – facing encourages more flow. Cubbie between the desks cut off even more flow. Place looked more like a "cube farm" than an office space where people work together in a collaborabative manner. But then again, that may be what Ms G wanted – editing may have dropped that out.

Sue Bunetta on September 8, 2009 at 7:36 pm
          • Good point about the editing out … I hate the layout of that office and I do work from a home office that is more conducive to collaboration and getting work done. There is too much wasted space in the middle of the room. The desks could hae been placed in the middel and storage and artwork along the walls. The fireplace would have been a nice relief from the job pressure so it should have remained. The TV can always fit above the fireplace.

trishaze on September 9, 2009 at 6:53 pm
        • Antonio design might be done on time, but there's WOW factor. His design is average. Lonni is a much better design. Even though her head board was not put up, she thought of a different way to have the head board in the room. It called creative thinking and that is what a good designer does.

bubba on September 12, 2009 at 12:35 am
    • I certainly understand why Vern is so pro Antonio, despite Antonio's claims of being straight, but I don't understand Gen and Candace's obvious crush on Antonio. He is crass, and nothing HGTV will reign in to become a decent show host. I don't see a large fan base here and HGTV is bound to lose on the deal once they put this yokel on the air, if he wins. Dan could certainly be groomed to be a really good show host and his designs have been wonderful, especailly this latest one. My choice would have been Lonni. She has the most polish and talent. The fact that her workman could not get the headboad established on the wall is not really her fault. The item was there and the concept certainly didn't fail. I can say with certainty that if Antonio wins, that's one design show on HGTV that I will not be watching.

      • Vern is the joke of this program. How many times did he have to compromise when he was on a timer in "Trading Spaces". His Holier than Thou attitude makes me sick. And talk about predictable designs…you can spot a Vern Yip design everytime. Gen may not be the best designer choice to be a judge, but at least she is a change. Candace is the only one on there who knows what she is talking about. And, I am sure it was Vern who forced the Lonni decision. Saw it coming when he questioned the headboard. Shame on you HGTV for letting this happen. I hardly watch this network anymore and it looks like I will be watching it less now.

David on September 7, 2009 at 4:54 pm
        • Yep Lonni was the best choice. Vern and Gen where both on trading spaces and neither had much talent. Vern produced a design line and Gen is back with a relatively new show (and a BABY!????) neither still have much talent….

Now that Lonni was given the boot, Antonio is by far the lesser of the two evils, as Dan uses his spare time to post nude pics of his self on the internet google his name

Tara on September 9, 2009 at 11:53 am
      • as the designer everything is your responsibility. having a remodelding business, if my plumber or tile installer don't show on the day I have them scheduled I can't tell the homeowner, "sorry," it's not my fault. Although I thought Lonnie overall did a nice room, she's still ultimately responsible for the entire execution of the design. Time management has been her downfall the entire season and by leaving the mounting of the headboard to the last minute, she once again ended up with an unfinished design.

leleddy on September 7, 2009 at 5:14 pm
        • She didn't leave the headboard mounting until the last minute. She paid the store to have it delivered and mounted by them. They were late, and they hadn't drilled the holes for the mounting brackets. The store was responsible.

mowgo on September 7, 2009 at 11:20 pm
        • No one is suggesting that is wasn't Lonni's responsibility to have that room finished. However, in your own business, if something happens that causes a delay, your client will likely understand a short delay. On this show, Lonni is under the time gun and when others failed, she had no recourse but to leave the headboard where she left it. The concept was still there. Had she had an additional 15 minutes, because someone else did not hold up their end of the bargain, she would have finished. Remember, she did everything in a timely manner; go back and watch the show again. Others failed her and she could not make them work within her timeline.

    • I am with you. Antonio should have gone home as a result of every team challenge. He is not a team player and proved it every time. He never volentered to be the team leader he just took over or created heck for the team leades, griped, complained, and minuipulated situation after situaltion. He has a dominate and controlling workstyle; he is likley to be make things difficult for every onethe works with at HGTV. The other designer should be rewarded for just putting up with him to avoid a blow up.

    • On a show like DESIGN STAR…I think the contestant would be correct to assume that the crpenters are capable of hanging a headboard, much the same way that David, Vern, Candice have their crew hang them week after week. I think Lonnie got the shaft in the crew she was assigned and from the judges. Instead they should have commended her for coming up w/ a "temporary" work around rather than ruining the "reveal" for Tiffany. Dan is too much like David(original artwork?!) and Antonio is a bully….. Lonnie was/is the real deal. HGTV blew it…..

Kathy on September 7, 2009 at 3:31 pm
      • Please note that the woman who sold Lonnie the reclaimed wood for the headboard agreed to have "her carpenter" install it. At the end it was the salesperson and 'her' carpenter who failed the installation. Not "the crew she (Lonnie) was assigned." Look closely at the shot of the salesperson climbing off the bed after failing the installation. Lonnie is ultimately responsible because she left the installation too late. If she had done it earlier her assigned carpenters could presumably helped.

        • I've had many renovations and none have been done on time. Things happen. Do you think that the clients were unhappy! If so, why did they say they wanted Lonni back. Let's be realistic! Either Candace and whatever that other judge's name is are jealous of having a talented woman on HGTV or HGTV have made their selection from the start. Design Star needs to be cancelled because it is a terrible non-reality show!

Sue on September 8, 2009 at 4:59 am
        • When Lonni realized that the store carpenters couldn't install the headboard properly, she made the right choice to rest it on the tables (which were strong) due to time constraints from the installer's incompetence. It should have only taken 15 minutes to install the headboard and the carpenters worked way longer than that (over an hour) and still werent' successful. Lonni had been told in t he past to have a back-up plan so she did exactly what she should have done and the very judges who told her to have a back-up plan, were the ones who eliminated here for doing what they suggested. Unethical for them to do that to her. Her room was fabulous!

    • I'm with you GoHerd1028. This one was a joke. Dan's room was busy and over-accessorized. And those curtains! Hideous. I hated his room. Dan has skated by now at lease three times- both Lonni and Torie were robbed. The wrong person went home again, indeed.

    • You are so right. Antonio is NOT a designer; he is a hairy, unkempt carpenter. I saw that for next week he actually let someone cut his hair and shave. What a new concept for the fact that he is seen on TV every week. Does that mean he disrespect the judges and us as an audience enough to clean up?

    • Is it just me, or does Dan seem mentally ill? Yes, his designs are great, but there is no way I could watch his show. I would be afraid that he would forget to take his medication and the show turn into an episode, "Attach of the psycho designer." Homeowners running and screaming with terror as Dan tries to attack them with a paintbrush. Serious, his laugh is eerie.

I realy thought the final 2 were going to be Antonio and Lonni, because they would have better TV Personality.

becky on September 8, 2009 at 1:29 am
          • I've loved Candice for years and look forward to her shows – even the old re-runs. She's funny and is extremely gifted. Genevieve has come a long way from her shoeless days on Trading Spaces. Vern always does some sort of focal wall with linear patterns – usually a slew of candles that will be impossible to light or keep clean. Is his show even on anymore. Also, looks like Kym Myles has been cancelled.

Bottom line is they gave David the biggest staff (he does none of the work himself). Kym got a carpenter and Jennifer (who's supposed to be back this month) had a special and a spot on that design-battle thing they had. Whoever gets their own show out of this had better be ready to do it all including the camera work!

    • This year is a huge let down for me. Dan is just a variation of (and a want to be) David B. Lonni was pure class all the way and the headboard fiasco was the carpenter's fault. Let Antonio win. He has more personality and is way more real than Dan any day of the week. I dislike the way the judges are acting this year. It's way too forced this year and Clive is not as nice as as he can be. Why all the posing this season!? If Dan wins I won't watch this show ever again!

SAS on September 7, 2009 at 6:03 pm
      • I certainly WILL WATCH DAN'S SHOW. I can't wait to see all the new innovations and how he improvises and creates something unique out of items that were meant for other purposes. Dan is awesome!! He would provide fantastic creative design ideas that I could use in my own home with a little touch of Dan's ingenuity working with my own materials. I've really been waiting for a show like Dan would do.

I thought he should have went when he didn't want to paint that room tan, that's what the homeowner wanted, but he thinks he is all that and did it his way he should just keep builiding sets and that's it. I like both Lonnie and Dan so I am torn between who I want to win it.

    • I completely agree that Antonio is the least talented one left. I think the judges are wowed by his gruff manner and think it's great, but frankly, I'm bored now. Dan has exhibited a truly artistic giftedness which reminds me of David Bromstad. You can coach someone's hosting skills, but real and natural talent can't be taught. Enough already with the old, tough guy schtick! I want to see a show that gives me ideas and inspiration. And to think that Dan is only 26!! He is the one with true talent.

      watcher247 on September 7, 2009 at 7:08 pm
      • Ok you're right… he reminds me of David… like he's trying to BE David! I mean seriously! He's trying to steal David's thing with the custom artwork. He copied David with the taking his shirt off thing. I swear he's trying to be the next David Bromstad which is NOT going to happen!

        sew_1989 on September 7, 2009 at 7:17 pm
        • Since when does providing personal artwork for a client belong exclusively to David? He is not the first designer to do so – nor will he be the last. Most of the Design On A Dime crew provide custom art pieces for their clients. As for the shirt, it was not his idea to take it off. It was the production crew's idea. But either way, who cares? If you have a nice body and work outside in the heat, why not take your shirt off?

    • no, Goatherd you have it wrong about Antonio… I do agree with you: Lonni'e room was lovely and Dan's had the boat mobile. In terms of innovative daring design: ANTONIO gets my vote hands down.An office needs to be a place where one can focus and work, The purple colors are perfect: relaxing but with a little energy…very clever choice…the minimal furniture in a very strange shaped space is just the right design for that room…the stainless map was genius and enough wow for an office…ditto the clocks…ok, maybe a jazzier bigger carpet in front of the fireplace. Antonio did make it a focal point actually a double focal point with the TV – Antonio is the winner. I'd much rather watch a very experienced designer on TV than a giggly boy…I love Dan, he is cute and sweet however, we already have a cute and sweet boy with David. Time for a no nonsense but EDGEY man.

I will not watch a show with either of two remaining contestants nor the last show in the series. They send Lonnie packing because the head board is not attached, but let Dan slide on the $10,000 piece that contributed nothing but to put them overbudget!!!! Kathy's office is a joke, with everything lined up along the walls, and not even a place for the four of them to sit down together and talk! Really makes me wonder about the integrity of the judges that they will go along with this joke of a contest!

Judges, you have lost your minds. Or else, the show is fixed, and someone decided who would win before the show started.
I just heard the ad for next week. Highlighted were the tiny disagreements with Lonnie's room. What about the comments on Antonio's room, that the furniture was out of scale, the rugs were tiny, the room lacked accessories, and looked like it was designed by a Hobbit. Actually it was designed by the Geico caveman.
      So sad…..

amazontealady on September 7, 2009 at 9:18 pm
    • I agree, sort of. Dan should have gone home. That room looked like it had 10 themes going on at once. I wish that whale mobile of his would have swallowed him like Jonah! Dan had one good room design and that was the individual white-room design. Ever since then it's been downhill. I can't believe the judges keep saying this is the best group yet? Not! David is the best designer they've ever had and no one has been able to approach his talent and design style. Big disappointment!

    • You are right! How did Antonio even make it to the show? His audition only showed an unfinished room that could have been aroom in a basement. If he is a set designer, why not show a few sets? Perhaps this guy is a complete fraud. Lonni showed REAL jobs for REAL clients in her audition tape. If HGTV thinks woman are going to watch Antonio over Lonni or Dan, they are mistaken. I have not seen one room from Antonio that looks elegant or polished. Last night's show indicated Dan and Lonnie for design skills!!!

gonzo on September 7, 2009 at 11:51 pm
    • Honestly, I think Lonni went home because she has a weak screen presence. She had a great room design that made the other two look ordinary, even with the headboard delay. Antonio's design was too simple to compete at this level, but i think he will win this due to the fact that he is so different from all the other faces we see on HGTV. Dan is another story, he's been done before-several times. The only way he wins is if antonio messes up big time. whoever wins this in the end will have to be able to sell a show so we can watch them without fliping the channel. Dan would have gotten kicked of last week if it wasn't for his team leader who needed to have a more active role in leading. she needed to have the last word on the design and cost instead of shrug her shoulders and saying , " I'm not taking responsibility for this.' Also, lets not forget the high pitched voice and that bending over she did at the end of her presentation. What was that exactly?

Joy on September 7, 2009 at 11:53 pm
      • ok, the whole leader thing, the "i'm not taking responsibility for this" thing, & the high pitched voice, bending over & such in the presentation was all Torie. Not Lonni. She (Lonni) was fantastic the entire time. she had some setbacks in the whitewall challenge. She is super comfortable in front of the camera & she's a great talent. the judges commented that she was "girl next door" in the kid's room challenge. she had a great camera presence & i think she should have been in the final 2.

    • I agree with you. I have been somewhat underwhelmed with this season. The backyard team challenge was odd this late in the season. That ugly white pergola plopped down in the yard was an eyesore and a waste of money. Dan should have gone home over that. So this week he had some interesting elements, but the rug he chose was such an ugly color and had no relation to any design elements in the room. Antonio's design was disjointed and unfinished. The lounge area was awful and the judges criticized him for that. To me, that was a much bigger problem than a headboard that simply needed to be attached to the wall. At least Lonni's room was complete in design. Antonio's room lacks so much more than the other two. I am not really impressed by his work.

kazeywazey on September 8, 2009 at 12:25 am

    • I AGREE! WTF? Lonnie is far more talented and watchable than Antonio. I really can't imagine him getting a show so don't understand why they let him stay, unless it's to assure that Dan wins. I am an Interior Designer and love Candice Olsen's work but she does a large focal wall in every room as well so I can't see why that would be held against Lonnie and the headboard isn't even an issue. In design things happen. It was minor compared to the lack of design sense in Antonio's office. It was boring! No WOW other than the map and Kathy Griffin didn't seem all that impressed. All of the furniture and accessories were the wrong scale and the room just didn't come together. It seemed to me that he just left the most important part (the decorating) as an afterthought.

    • Your all wrong.

Lonni can only do focus walls. And this one was worse than the chevrons. What a hideous design she came up with. She is truly a one trick pony.

Antonio did an OK design. I did not see the Zen in any of it. I would have preferred to see real wood floors. Not laminate.

Dan did the best design of all of them. His design was warm and inviting. And designed to grow with the child. Although I did not care for the boats hanging from the ceiling. What a dust collecting nightmare.

In the car he turned around to Dan and said, "You have $10,000 right?" May not be a direct quote. Dan said he had $5K and Antonio said to him "No, you have $10K." I think that is where Dan became confused. I watched Antonio's facial expressions and actions on this and other episodes. I think that he is going to win and I WILL NOT watch his show. I just signed on and do not know how to post on this site, so replying. I wanted to say this for a week now. Thanks and I hope it shows up not just on GoHerd's page.

      • I saw that sneaky move to confuse Dan as well. Antonio did that on purpose…You have $10K started with Antonio, not Dan. That budget problem was his fault and how could that be overlooked?
I will not watch Antonio if he wins either for many reasons, but mainly because he sabotaged the budget for Torrie and made it look like Dan made a poor choice and he ruined the river walk concept. Oh ya, one more reason…he has no sense of design. Design Star???LOL

Goodbye Design Star on September 8, 2009 at 3:12 pm
    • I have watched Design Star for all 4 seasons, and I think that this was the most boring one, with little insight into the real people the designers are as well as their own voice in design. In the past, they have had more individual challenges to showcase themselves and have had to use much more unusual materials that stretch their creative side. Even I could design a room with all the cash they had available to them. Whatever happened to using recycled items and $50 for paint or remixing a homeowners own items in the design?? I can understand the need to see how different spaces in a home can be updated but there was so little inovation involved in most of the designs, I would be bored with whoever is the winner. And, I agree with GoHerd that keeping Antonio around was absurd. He is not a user friendly kind of guy, though he does possess some talents. He has been aggressive and overbearing throughout the show. Dan is a nice person too but he is not as creative as some of the designers that are already on HGTV. I am completely disappointed with the outcome.

skketch on September 8, 2009 at 7:31 pm

    • I watched the re-runs againyesterday, and on the first show, in her bio, Lonni said "I own my shop and don't do the manual labor, I have people to do it" – she might be a decent designer and no, she can't multi-task – she always had an attitude, like she was better than everyone else. -It was time. Dan is just another David wanna-be. Go away and give someone with some personality a shot.

Guest on September 8, 2009 at 10:43 pm
    • I'm with you. There is NO WAY Loni should have gone home. She did an excellent job designing that guest room and it was unfair to send her home because her assistants had difficulty hanging that headboard. Vern Yip should be ashamed of himself. Antonio is a joke. Hopefully Candance will soon figure it out. His personality is annoying to say the least. He can't even get along with anyone but his ego and teamwork is a word that doesn't even register in his vocabulary. If Dan Vickery does not win at this point then this Design Star show needs to be canceled.

Lavonda on September 9, 2009 at 1:58 am
    • What is HGTV thinking sending Lonni home over a headboard not hung? It looked pretty good down low as well. Hey, did anyone else notie that now they are not letting us see who is ahead for the on-line show? I smell a rat!!! What do you bet the producers are covering up the real vote!!! I agree with many of you: HGTV has got to return to design shows and loose the House Hunters and Design to Sell shows. In this economy, if you haven't lost your house, you are staying put and making it look new on a budget. THAT is the next wave of design shows we want to see. Anyone at HGT reading this?? Lonni's featrue walls were just that. Silkscreening on grasscloth wallpaper was so cool. You expert design star judges must be puppets if they didn't think it was perfect!

    • Antonio had the toughest task as he wasn't really given a sense of direction by Griffin. His ideas are fresh and he comes through every time. I think that debate is hot because all three designers are more or less equal. Lonni however seemed to be repeating her idea in every design… Go Antonio!

george on September 9, 2009 at 2:38 am
    • You got to be Freaking Kidding me! Antonio is great! The stupid people on here that attack a talented designer like him! I'm so tired of the anger here. I think all three are talented but Antonio is stronger then Lonnie, it is unfair to base the competition on one week, its all the challenges and the judges make that clear. Lonnie was warned not to repeat the same design again and they felt she did.

      Get real!

MANCAVE on September 9, 2009 at 3:41 am

Building Materials on September 9, 2009 at 3:31 pm
    • Yes, I completely agree. This has really disappointed me and made me wonder how "prejudged" this is? Lonnie's design was so far superior to Antonio's ….what a joke. As for Lonnie not having her headboard attached, well wasn't that the fault of the store who told her they could install it? The week before it was Torie would should not have gone home, but rather Dan. So here we are at the final week and competing are two designers who should have been eliminated. Get a grip judges…we are not stupid, we do see what is going on with the eliminations. I will not watch a show with either Dan or Antonio, they just are not qualified, in my opinion.

hip grandma on September 9, 2009 at 7:15 pm
    • I agree whole heartedly. We all saw that Antonio was to blame for Dan's error in last week's episode. He was the one that kept saying that there was $10,000. He should have been gone then. He is a bossy so and so and can in no way be compared to Guy F. on The Food Network. He has a personality and Antonio does not. This week his challenge was very poor!!! I have a feeling now that the whole thing was fixed from the start. And Genevieve, you were not the greatest on Trading Spaces" and your new show doesn't qualify you as a great designer, either. I still can't believe they let Lonnie go because the headboard wasn't attached(her crews error)!!!!

Caryl on September 10, 2009 at 2:56 am
      • Genevieve was on Trading Spaces (with Vern) and she has no actual design training and it shows! She is very sex crazy andnow she had a baby with one of the guys a Tyler Harcott

Candice Olson is very matey with Antonio as he is her set designer for Devine Design!!!!!

Dan spends his spare moments posting nudie pics of himself all over the internet

this show is a joke Design Star needs to be cancelled!!!!

I am voting for Lonni. She is a charming person and she actually listens to the client and tries to create for them. I like her work.

Patty on September 11, 2009 at 11:13 pm
    • You are absolutely right. Cannot understand Candace- unless she is afraid Lonni will be her competition! Dan is a goofball who loaded the room with junk and Antonio is a scruffy, inarticulate who undersized the wall map and furnishings. Lonni's room was beautiful and balanced. Seems like they want Anotonio to win toappleal to the scummer audience.

lisa hodgson on September 12, 2009 at 12:55 pm
    • I disagree with the judges as do you. To have Sent Home Lonni was a massive mistake! The people
informed her they knew how to hang the head board, and she didn't have time to build a cleat. But in
terms of talent, Lonni is so much more talented, and looks best on camera as well. She's talented, and
her room was a home run. Antonio's room has out of scale furniture, rugs and even the map was out of scale. Dan's room was out of scale as well. He has one crib in the corner, with the boat mobiles, and
large sized chairs that added nothing to the room. His design was also very easy to do. Who wants to
see Antonio and Dan on each night. No me! I've studied art and art history, and design, and sending
lonni home was horrific! Send home the man whose arms are all marked up or the Bartender, but
no, you elected to send home the one person who studied design. This makes no sense'allall.

    • Antonio made Candace's nickers flutter a couple of weeks ago, so what did everyone expect. It has been Antonio all along, but they (the producers) ahve to amke it look good for the program. Lonni, Tori, and several others were much better, but HGTV need a rough, tough guy like Antonio to hopefully spice up what has become a very dull program lineup. Dan is good, but he doesn't stand a chance without the public vote of the past years (look at the online voting for the on-line show). I really don't see a reason to watch next Sunday, Antonio got it locked up.

Headboard well it wasn't designed to be a headboard, but what a concept and if I remember the shop said they could install it!!!…Now for Antonio…What a new talent…and I would really enjoy watching a show he would host and maybe even my husband would watch!!! He designed a work space with furniture he designed, I have seen several designers on HGTV that cover fireplaces and floors (wood floors would be a lot warmer than tile), and what beautiful map and wall piece! and excuse me to the one blogger about not showing Alaska and Hawaii, I'm sure he knows that they are states. Dan's room was not a room designed for growing baby boy, judges went ga ga over the boat ceiling mobiles, very nice but the room didn't cry out baby's room! Thanks, for letting me voice out bene and everyone else out there blogging.

    • I think that Dan will be the next Design Star. He showed even more talent this week working alone that he can sew drapes, paint pictures and hang uniquely, have terrific ideas for furnishings, decor and all sorts of extras that take a creative mind such as the boats and wall hangings.
If you look at Antonio's, it is just pieces of furniture and paint but nothing creative and different. And the furniture did not coordinate in size or taste. Dan also smiles as a host where Antonio looks mad.

For instance, the little girls room smart design, window seating, repurposing the gumball machine very smart but that ugly stripe around the room and those ugly colors, NOT CUTE! The room this week was also not impressive, he had too much stuff in there and the ceiling boats, uhh again not cute. I realize form follows function, he's got the function part down pat but the form, errr, no. If he wins I probably will not watch his show, I think a lot of people are rooting for him because of his looks, He's cute but I'll take an average looking designer with a fabulous room over eye candy anyday

He is the only one of the designer who has completed all his assigned challenges, who has taken a leadership role and who has excelled in hosting. Dan's giggle just grates on my nerves. 4. I don't think the headboard is the reason Lonni was sent home. If so, give me a break! She did the best she could given the lack of progress made by her carpenters. I think the real reason she was sent home is that, in spite of her beautiful room this week, she never designed a room with a unique "wow" factor. Her rooms were nice, but never really cool or different. I think HGTV would have had a hard time creating an interesting show for her.

Dan and Antonio have been my picks for the final two since early on in the competition. I'm rooting for Antonio, because I think his show would be more interesting and different from what's on right now, but I'm sure Dan could do great also.

I'm already dying to watch next week's episode!

the truth is, lonni's style and sophistication is what gives her such host-potential.
      think about it.
would you really watch a show hosted by either of the two guys, week in and week out?
the judges had it wrong, too.
you can always get better at decorating.
but you either have host-potential, or you don't.
      neither of the guys do.
i, too, am done watching this show, because i no longer care who wins.
and i wouldn't watch either of them on a regular show.

      • Hosting can be learned. As one becomes more comfortable in front of the camera, hosting will become easier. You either have design style, or you don't. Antonio doesn't! And his hosting is obnoxious!

GGG on September 9, 2009 at 4:13 pm
    • I think all three are very talented but I disagree that Lonni's room did not have a "wow" factor. Actually, she kept repeating the same "wow" factor each week, strong pattern on the focal wall…and that is the problem. Personally, I found flaws with each room, so I think they all came out of the challenge about equal. Dan and Antonio have always stood out (weather good or bad) among the others, so I'm not surprised that they are in the final two.

Let's remember that even David had his share of problems in front of the camera…camera presence is teachable and look how far David has come.

Penny3, you're right…either will do well with there own show. I'm leaning toward Dan myself but I will share both joy and disappointment next week in the final show. I wish they could keep both.

Pam on September 7, 2009 at 4:20 am
    • I think Antonio should have gone home this week. He didn't achieve anything the designer at IKEA couldn't have and probably for alot less. It had no personality except for some purple walls but even they didn't contribute to the whole design. because they weren't part of a design realised as a whole. The analagous color scheme needed the punch of a color across from it onthe color wheel. In any case the lounge is poorly laid out, it needed a table and chairs where poeple can brainstorm and show what they are trying to propose. No designer could look at that room and see it finished, it was still lacking so much. On the other hand Lonni's room was great and because the headboard couldn't be installed she was sent home. If she had put the mirror on the side over the bed it would have been great and the slab of wood could have replaced the mirror as a statement piece. Her design was so much more thought out and realised that it is hard to see how Antonio won, with a room that ended up looking like a dorm room using mismatched furniture they brought from home. Lonni was robbed and I am a designer with twenty years experience.

lolo on September 7, 2009 at 4:13 am
    • Boy..do I disagree. Sorry. Dan is a one room wonder. Remember what he spent for the white square thing in the backyard!!!

      • The pergola was returned and exchanged for one that cost $5k — where they went over budget after that seems to be anyone's guess …

    • You are so wrong, Lonnie was the only designer left. These women are affraid of the competition.

KHB on September 7, 2009 at 8:28 am
      • You're soooo right!! You have the two most conceited designers in the pack!! Too much ego!

guest on September 7, 2009 at 2:13 pm
      • YEP considering Lonni Paul won the Fendi Casa Degigner Award in 2008 she is definitely a real winner! The judges have made a BIG MISTAKE!!!!

Antonio has been on Design on a Dime and Dan has posted nude pics of his self all over the internet – not much talent in either one…..

Guest on September 9, 2009 at 2:47 pm
        • Antonio doesn't work on DoaD. He lists that and Devine Design as his favorite HGTV shows.

What "nude" pictures of Dan are all over the internet? Sounds like a rumor to me.

kryptogal on September 10, 2009 at 12:49 am
    • The carpenter couldn't finish the headboard. And how much more original can you get with that headboard choice??? The "wall thing" is her "signature" style which all designers have (or should have). Each and EVERY wall WAS original, bold and made a statement. You think Antonio is a original??? He's getting by on his schtick of being different in his delivery. His room looked like a beginner decorator did it!!! I couldn't believe he intentionally asked for the smaller rug for the sitting area! As I said…beginner decorator not seasoned designer.

        • lol) check out all the nude pics he has posted of his self all over the web –

did you read his biio under : What's your most unusual talent?

his answer and this is a quote form his bio
" In most homes these days, with a classic 8' ceiling I can do a handstand and plant my feet on the ceiling. "

          WHAT A JOKE!

Lonni Paul was awarded the Fendi Casa Degins Award in 2008 so something is rigged here????

    • Kudos to Antonio!! Although Dan is good, he to ordinary. HGTV needs someone like Antonio to add some "flavor" to their network.

yendor on September 8, 2009 at 12:22 am
      • LOL – HGTV has already had Antonio on Design on a Dime – try and keep up…..

    • i think lonni's room was the best room

    • I think Antonio will win

  8. I am not sure what the judges are thinking. The best designers are no longer in the game. No matter who wins now, I will not watch.

ailurophile on September 8, 2009 at 11:54 pm
    • You're right! The judges don't have any room to talk because even with their "expert (and they have expert ) help, they don't always get everything finished in the limited time-who does. Given the inneptness of the carpenters, she should not have been singled out. Kathy Griffin, you're the joke–you got the tinniest funiture for your space I've ever seen–you said you would get them–go, girl!!

Guest on September 7, 2009 at 2:10 pm
      • I'm sure we'll hear a lot about this in her next stand-up special. Maybe we'll see them re-design the room on the next season of her show.

mowgo on September 7, 2009 at 2:37 pm
    • I'm with you. I don't care who wins because I won't watch either one of them when they stumble through hosting their show.

dijoens on September 7, 2009 at 9:09 pm
    • It's about personality also. Everyone else either was a BIG baby, or complained too much.

  9. First of all I think the judges made a big mistake. Lonni's design was so much better than Antonio; his funiture was hidious and her headboard was fine until it could be properly placed later- the rest of her design was gorgeous!!!!!!

Donna on September 7, 2009 at 3:06 am
    • I totally agree with Donna. The only mistake noted for Lonnie was the headboard (one item). Antonio had a room full of mis-scaled furniture and the judges even said he lack a "wow" factor. Yet they kept him because they like his brash onscreen style. I too am VERY disappointed in the judging on this round.

Barbara on September 7, 2009 at 3:20 am
    • i agree. i was watching a show of genivienves about a new jersey couple that had their master bedroom redone. it was the one where the couple had been waiting for like 13 years. get this when she brought the couple in the room, there was no switch plate on the wall for the double light by the door. check it out. it you watch closely there have been other things not done on canidices show and vern's show also. who are they to say lonni didnt finish. maybe they should finish their designs on tv also.

pmc on September 7, 2009 at 5:25 am
    • I totally agree with you! I have no interest in watching the last show. Antonio should have been sent home, not Lonnie!

Lynnie on September 7, 2009 at 7:16 am
      • Lonnie was a looser!! I love Antonio!!!!

Renee on September 7, 2009 at 10:21 pm
    • I'm glad the judges are in charge this year. Look what a mistake people made last time. Have you seen her show yet? I can't even remember her name. The guy should have won.

Renee on September 7, 2009 at 10:20 pm
      • I agree but was curious and looked it up on the website, she had a baby in February but her show will be on after this design star show is done airing. From past shows I have been very pleased with Myles of Style, she does the most creative things so may give the new gal a chance….I can't remember her name now either though:)

        76purple on September 8, 2009 at 12:09 am
  10. I can’t believe Lonni was sent home! She was the only reasonable one on the show. They sent her home because she can’t “multitask”?! That’s ridiculous! She was the best one out of all the designers. She was the best at hosting and at designing and she was the most calm and reasonable one out of them all. Whoever wins, Dan or Antonio, I am not watching their show at all!
