I don't find that these three finalist are nearly as talented as other finalists in the past seasons.
I agree with you on your comment. I'd like to see Todd back. If their (the judges) are looking for a WOW factor, Todd was the only one who could bring it.
Lonni Paul won the Fendi Casa Design Award in 2008 that says talent to me! How is it she is not the winner here? Something is rigged on this show……
Agree, no one has ever come close to David from the first season. I do not think this season they have shown as much per individual designer as in the past, maybe I am wrong and just do not remember. I personally want Dan to win considering who is left. I think Antonio does more of what he wants vs what the client wants. I would be afraid to hire him. Good luck Dan.
Kathy, I totally agree with you!!!! I could have come up with some of the designs just by looking through magazines….. very disappointed in the show this time.!!!
Kathy and HGTV,
Although I shared your opinion initially, I think some of this year's contestants have shown considerable talent. Dan's nursery was divine! 'tonio forgot the Zen again and ignored the terrific view..
My gripe is with Color Splash's "Tuscan Makeover" on September 10. David total ignores the colors on the Deruta salt and pepper shakers the couple showed him as their inspiration. Instead, the designer imbues the room with earth tones. No clear bright blue and yellow outlined with burned orange, accented with faded green, on lots of clean white. And where did the pink come from? What a shame!
Could NOT agree more!!!
D-Bro, I have to disagree with you on two points 1-Dan's giggling: as a viewer, I can sense when a host is not comfortable. It can indicate that they are not being themselves, and it distracts a viewer from what the designer is trying to convey. So Dan needs to get control over his nervousness because it detracts from all of his positive traits and talents. 2-covering the fireplace in Kathy Griffin's office. I personally don't take issue that it was covered or think it should have been featured because of the purpose of the room. A fireplace to me implies a place to relax and get cozy in front of. As this is an office, this would not be the best feature to highlight and also, the combination of paperwork and fire being in such close proximity to one another personally makes me nervous.
That being said, I think you're awesome, and when are you going to design a space for single women? It seems your shows are focused on couples living in houses or bachelors. Think of us single ladies living in the city too. Luv you, and big hugs.
Love you David!! I don't care for Dan's cheap imitations of your original paintings, his come across as amateur and it is embarrassing in my opinion. He is trying to be you and making a poor laughable job of it. I don't think my child would want to be staring at sticks hanging from his ceiling collecting dust, they didn't look like boats for a child's room, they looked like sticks! I know it is a "design" element but there were too many of them in my opinion. Lonnie should have stayed and Antonio should have been eliminated but the powers that be wanted the two men as the final two, a shame but what can ya do.
I agree with you about the fireplace in an office. It was not a big deal for me to have it covered up and made more sense to have a video center, especially as there was a tv in the room originally.
I agree with you David, the giggle is small stuff. Think Antonio has problems in the shopping area. The small rug and chairs looked silly. Think Lonnie was much better. I do not feel it was her fault her headboard did not get hung. The people she bought it from were suppose to hang it and they screwed up. I think her feature wall is here signature, like your paintings David. To me, Dan had to much stuff in his room.
My thoughts exactly Martha! Every designer has a signature that sets them apart from others. Lonnie's signature are her unique and beautiful accent walls and David's lucky clients are recipients of one-of-a-kind paintings. While I like Antonio's camera presence, I don't think he is a true designer. He knows how to build but not design. Dan is my pick and he will become more comfortable as he gets used to being in front of a camera.
i totally agree…Dans rrom was way to crowded, Antonios looked undone and Lonnies was the best of three, but she was sent home. I totally think she was robbed
Martha I concur! Dan's room was too cluttered. Furniture all pushed against the wall. I wanted to go de-clutter. Loved the boat mobile. That is DESIGN! Antonio has DESIGN talent, but I don't think its INTERIOR design. His room wasn't finished in my opinion. No pop, no accesories. Lonnie is a talented INTERIOR Designer. Her focal walls are her signature and do not feel she is a one trick pony. All rooms need a focal piece, and if there is no archte. piece already in the room, you design one. ITs hard for me to let Lonnie go over the headboard. In REAL LIFE it would have been completed. Antonio is the one who (in my opinion ) didn't finish. "LONNIE YOU ROCK INTERIOR SPACES! I would have watched your show! " So I guess the winner depends on "what kind of" DESIGN show HGTV is looking for. They all are talent in the rough.
I agree with Tammy and Martha. I think Lonnie should have stayed, too and, while I really like Dan, I thought his room had WAY too much going on. Antonio's room was lacking, in my opinion, but I did like the built-ins. My problem with Antonio was the way I thought he threw Dan under the bus in the backyard challenge–Dan said that they had a $5,000 budget for the gazebo and it was Antonio who said that Torie had given him $10,000 and pushed him to use it. No mention was made of this on the program, but Antonio NOT owning up to making that error in Dan's defense turned me off to supporting any possible future program he might have. Maybe something wasn't communicated in the editing process…if so, I'd love to know that. Good luck to Dan and Lonnie, I hope you'll still have your own show some day!
Oi. I can't stand her focal walls. They are hideous. That's all she can do. Focal walls. She has not finished one of her projects. The headboard was just another in the long line of incomplete rooms.
I have to disagree with you on it is not Lonni's fault about the headboard. It is the designers responsibility to make sure the room is done before the client sees it. I had no problem with Lonni overall, she seems a very nice person. However, it was her fault that the headboard did not get hung in time as she is the designer and that is part of the designers job..
I agree. I had no problem with Lonni's signature walls. Everybody went ga-ga over David's signature paintings. Dan should not be in the final three. He totally threw Torie under the bus when he spent $11,000 on that pergola. All four designers were told that the total budget was $25K, so why would he spend almost half of the budget on his "pet" project…because he is selfish. He had a cell phone so there is no excuse not to call Torie and the other team members when he found out how much the pergola was. He was the one who decided to sign for it, without permission. Dan is not a team player. He blew the budget…not Torie. Dan was a jerk for doing that and the judges looked the other way. Also, I feel that Dan is just another David, so Antonio should win because he brings a fresh look to the cookie cutter designer mold.
I don't think Torie went home just for the budget mishap — the judges also commented that her choice of patio furniture was to "matched" and boring, as I recall. But I agree, Dan should have checked with Torie before spending that much, especially on an item that was nothing special, as Candace pointed out.
I hoped Lonni would stay, but Judge Candace warned her after her white room that problems occur and you have to have a backup plan (when Lonni's plastic cups kept falling off the wall). So she again had no back-up plan regarding the headboard. Antonio, too, repeated the same mistake he made with his white room — not enough accessories — that was the judges' comment. They liked his painted design on the wall of his white room, but the judges commented on lack of accessories. He does seem challenged in shopping for the right accessories, but would do well with an internet show of his own. Some of his construction projects are detailed and the internet would be a good format for him. Again, a weakness previously warned about was repeated this last week by both Lonni and Antonio, so I think Dan will win.
I agree about the headboard. They people she was working with messed it up for her and with a little more time it would have been completed.
They (designers) keep saying you need a focal wall and then when Lonnie does it it isn't a good thing. Don't understand that!!!
Well, I DON'T agree with David! Maybe the "giggling" is small stuff to him, but not to those who can't stand it, myself specifically! Maybe David likes Dan because he's trying to be a carbon copy of him, but Antonio should and DID win, and rightfully so!!!!!
I agree with you David and think Dan should be the next design star. Antonio's bad attitudes towards everyone will come out in his designing. He (Antonio) has such a poor working relationship with others and has a truly lone ranger attitude. I personsally love your show David and Dan would be a person who could not only design but will work great with all those very important people in the background who help make your designs come to life. You would be the first to admit without a good working relationship and attitude a great design show couldn't be possible. Dan has this skill and good attitude to know how to bring a truly great show to life. Antonio needs to humble his "I'm all that attitude" and realize no one lasts when they go it alone. David you bless me with your down home friendly ways and Dan also will bring this to the table.
Amen! Couldn't have said it better!
I agree 100% – I think he would scare me if he were working in my house….
I agree too!!! When they said Antonio's name I was SOOOOOOOOOO mad.
Ditto Kim. You said it all
I think David is bang on with what he said about letting all three through to the final. They have been doing new things this season and I think that would have been a FABULOUS twist!! All three are so talented and it would have been wonderful to see what they would do in the final challenge.
I also don't mind Dan's giggling. I don't really notice it because I am focused on his room and designs rather than his giggling.
Love your vlogs David! Look foreward to them every week!!
Totally agree!!!!
Now that is a good idea. Let all three of them compete in the final design show.
I agree that taking all three thru to the final would have been awesome. They could have had a two-hour and eliminate one the first, and then the face-off with the last two . Would have been a spectacular finish to an awesome season. Maybe they'll get the hint and do it this way next year. And, I like Dan's giggling.
David, I have to agree. Dan's giggling is fresh and to me shows that he LOVE"S what he is doing. Antonio, well I can surely see him designing tatoo parlors, etc. a little rough around the edges. Too rough. The wall Queen, well she just had to go, that was her oppurtunity to do something different, and she didn't.
Recall on the apples, Dan must win.
Danny boys giggling shows what an idiot he is – maybe David and Dan could do a Giggles the Clown show together…..(lol)
While Antonio's braying like a jackass makes as all aware of his genealogy. It was cute when Donkey did it in Shrek, but on Antonio it leaves much to be desired.
Everyone's poking at Dan's giggles and says absolutely nothing about the design. Yes, he's nervous in front of the camera. Go back and watch Design Star 1 – that was David's biggest hurdle too.
You wanna pick on people, let's have a go at the guy who took speech therapy from Chewbacca and apparently shares the same grooming habits too! His hosting is neither informative nor intelligible. If I wanted to watch a bad rip-off of Emeril's "Bam!", I'd watch Emeril.
OK, DAN HAS NO TALENT AND HE GIGGLES! LIKE A 12 YEAR OLD – he should NOT be in front of a camera EVER!
Please. Dan's room was the best this week, Lonni's was the most sophisitcated but unfinished, and Antonio designed an ice cave for hobbits while braying like a jackass on camera. The braying doesn't include the unintelligible garble that spews from his mouth, is he supposed to be the white version of Chris Tucker? Go take another peek and if that doesn't convince, try putting on some glasses.
No need to shout. I think Dan is endearing. I don't think he's a David wannabe. I do think he has certain things in common with David and those things are what make David a success and can make Dan successful too. As far as taking the shirt off, working in the hot L A sun, I'd think most men would take their shirt off, which makes me wonder why did Antonio NOT take off his shirt. Is it because one or more of his tattoos are so offensive they'd immediately eliminate him if the viewers saw it?
Ally,
Too funny and too true. Thanks for the laugh.
I think Dan's room was the best. The only thing I did not like was the boat mobile. Which all the judges, including David, seem to think is the best thing since hot sliced bread. Oi.
Lonni's room was, yet again, unfinished. Just another piece in the long line of incomplete projects from her. And really!!! Another focal wall? Paa-lease. Enough with the focal walls.
I did not even notice that Antonio gave us a look at his hosting ability during the "big reveal." I can't understand most of what he says at any given moment. "Bam! Here it is!" I think his room was the weakest this episode. I love purple, it's my fav color. I don't want it on my walls. He totally missed the WOW in the conversation area. And covering up the fireplace??? Comon' dude. Who doesn't love a roaring fire…even in LA????
OMG I hadn´t laughed so hard in a very long time. Well said!
He is not nervoius in front of a camera – have you seen all the nude pics he has posted of his self all over the internet? goodle his name he is another openly gay boy like David
What the flaming hell is 'goodle'? A search engine for the not so straight? And if so, why are YOU using it?
The guy is a model, so what if there's nude or semi-nude pics of him? What, you got an inferiority complex or are you just a phobe? Why the bloody hell does it matter, Stevie – if someone is gay or not? Did you sit and worry over the women designers and their sexuality too? Too weird.
It's interesting, don't you think, that a prominent online gay blogger interviewed the gay designers of this seasons Design Star, in fact, he interviewed TWO gay men. Neither of those men's names was Antonio or Dan. That's right, dear, Jason and Nathan were the gay duo according to this: http://www.afterelton.com/blog/snicks/meet-the-ga…
it;s a typo should be G O O G L E
David IS OPENLY GAY look him up on http://www.afterellen.com a gay website!!!!
does it really matter?
Yeah, I think I managed to point out the typo with the "search engine for the not so straight" comment.
Didn't find him on that website, even though I did a specific search for his name separate from the search for Design Star. Oddly enough, you can search for Dan Vickery's til the cows come home, cause honey – there IS more than the one who's this year's Design Star finalist – and some of those Dan's are gay and some of them aren't.
So where's this so called info on Ellen's site at? And why the HELL does it matter?
I AGREE!!! I think Candice keeps going on and on about Antonio — give it a rest — he mumbles!!! I think he's a control freak, doesn't play well with others, and is not that talented as a designer!
LOL – Antonio is the set designer for Divine Design – that is Candice Olson's show……..
I agree also, Candice is a little tiring over Antonio – and I like her a lot but….I think he is obnoxious and he just changes stuff without consulting with the others, i.e. – the river rock dry bed – I thought would have been soooooo great and yet he dumped the rocks all out and covered it up…..gee if he hadn't liked the pool what wouldhe have done to it!!!! He needs to go for sure….I didn't think it was such a big deal – as Vern made it anyway – over the headboard not been attached in Lonnie's room – I amnot sure the judges take into consideration when THEY do a room – they have much more time etc……fun to see them compete and they all have and some of them didn't do so well either….I liked Torrie but she is NOT a leader and just shrugs her shoulders and goes with whoever…..
I agree with Pat in that Torrie was not a leader. People are blaming Dan for throwing her under a bus over the budget overage, she also got sent home because the judges didn't like the "matched" patio furniture she picked out and I believe they could see that she really didn't take charge of the project — I suspect they watch a lot more footage than we are show.
It appears that HGTV has found their cave man to design man caves. Gee, I thought they were searching for a design star not another addition to the Geico commercial.
So, yous guyses will just hafta be cool wit der choice. YO!
Why does he look as though he's been straddling who knows what (or whom) for too long? Will he topple over if he puts his feet together? What kind of audience are they targeting? Beer drinking, pot bellied…ewww, I'm getting a visual of some fat guy in dirty jeans, stomach hanging over in front, smelly undershirt, leaning over to turn on the TV, butt crack showing as he belches his beer, staggers up and plops himself down on a filthy sofa in his potential 'man room'. Way to go HGTV! Show us you can pick a winner!
Don't forget the pack of Marloboros rolled up in the t-shirt sleeve!
This guy doesn't have shirt sleeves. It's one of those sleeveless undershirts with body hair sticking out all over… but he does have a toothpick he's been chewing on as he gulps his beer!
I agree with Kathy that none of these designers are as talented as in past seasons, and am not sure I would watch the winner's show. Antonio should have gone home this week, IMHO; he is abrasive and arrogant, and he hasn't learned how to accessorize his designs appropriately. Dan is talented, but seems to be copying my fave designer, DB, with the shirtless look and custom artwork (David did it first, and better!). I thought Lonnie's work this week was good enough to keep her in the finals. Her feature walls are, as DB stated, her "thing" — it works for her, and there's nothing wrong with having a signature feature in your rooms (think, DB's custom artwork in every design — love it!). If I have to choose between Dan & Antonio, I'll go with Dan. But, Colorsplash with the amazingly talented and hot David Bromsted will remain my favorite show on HGTV!!
I still like David and Kim the best. Why isn't Kim on as much anymore? She was so innovative and out-of-the-box.
Yes, I thought the same thing…oh gosh, he's copying DB!!! How can he get away with that..he'll never measure up…can this be allowed?
why does everybody rag on Antonio so much? The epitome of arrogant was Rob and last year's juvenile prima donna (I think I'm remembering his name right) Michael (even his mother rolled her eyes in the final audience get together). Both of them were vicious and self-centered and had highly inflated senses of themselves.
Antonio is not perfect–who is?!–but I think he's authentic and that he's driven to be the best he can be. No one seems to remember that when Lonni's plastic cups were popping off the wall like confetti, it was Antonio who went over to help her with the bit of spare time he had–Torrie followed only after he took the lead on that and no one else helped.
I like the twinkle Antonio gets in his eye when he's a little mischievous in his strategy and that he's really a teddy bear underneath the gruff. I think he's smarter than the other contestants and says what a lot of us are thinking. I loved his eye rolling when Dan took off his shirt the previous weeks (the shirt strip and the original painting both seem to be derivative attempts to be the next David Bromstad–no offense David; that's the ultimate in homage) and Antonio's comment about being 40 and out of shape–40 is a lot older than most if not all the other designers and it says a ton that he's willing to show up and go for it. I get the sense there have been a lot of hard knocks wisdom won along the way, so where others see arrogance I just see someone with a strong presence who stays focused on the big picture. He's got some solid design sense and strategizes well though I do some room for improvement, but I think that will evolve as his career continues.
My hope, however, is that Antonio is the last one standing for the on air show and that Dan keeps his lead for the online one so that they're both winners.
I could just hug you right now Minnesota fan
Well, I could just throw up!
If Antonio took his shirt off, I might throw up
Agreed! I really hope Antonio wins since I think he'd have a really fun, entertaining and original show.
You summarized my sentiments, exactly Minnesota fan. From the beginning I thought Lonnie and Antonio would be the final two. Dan is fantastic, too, but in the end I think Antonio is the real deal- he's genuine and warm with clients and passionate about delivering the best. His hard rock biker/carpenter-gone-bad exterior just makes him that more interesting. Compared to the other contestants (and especially Dan and Lonnie), I think he is better at building rapport with all types of clients–from a 5 year old kid to a wise-cracking celebrity. His on-air personality is refreshingly different-and with a little polish, will make for a dynamite HGTV show. In terms of his designs and ability to manage jobs, he has been the most consistent at creating style that is finished, well-constructed, meets client needs, and delivers a wow. I can't wait to see what he could do when not confined to a 30 hour time limit. My vote is for Antonio!!
i like your good memory and judgement, lonnie messed up the white room challenge completely and who came to save her from a complete embarrassment ? antonio… in fact i'm happy lonnie's out, regardless of her designs, her boring / depressed attitude is not what i want to see at tv; dan was the "brat" in this team, almost always messing up something and blaming on others – remember he screwed up the aligment of the cabinets in the kitchen challenge, then the pergola, i think he must grow up before starting a tv career; i hope antonio wins
You do realize that Lonnie changed the design for the cups with five hours on the clock, right? Antonio is shown only to go help her out during the last 30 minutes of work time.
Who stabbed teammates in the back on paint color ALL 3 agreed on? Who blatantly vetoed the river of rocks idea, ripped open a bag, began pouring out rocks, and to hell with the others? Who went shopping WITH Dan and co-selected that $10,000 pergola? Who lied to Vern about not being involved in budget discussions? ANTONIO! But we're supposed to believe Dan is the brat, right?
As for the alignment of the granite countertops for the cabinets, according to an interview given after her show was cancelled, it was Tashika who'd incorrectly measured the template given to the stone cutters, who then cut the granite to those flawed specs and THAT is why the granite didn't seam properly. Not Dan's fault at all.
Antonio was not involved with the budget nor did he LIE to Vern. He simply repeated what Tori had been said in the van and that was $10,000. As for the pergola fiasco, did he not tell Dan that they needed to wait and see how the others would feel about the quote? Dan did not have to sign that contract, it shows his poor judgment. And just because you have $10,000 does not mean you need to spend it all.
Dan is a brat and he is a phony. I did not like how he threw Tori under the bus for the budget issue when it was his lack of judgment in signing the contract, for a third of their budget, to begin with. He needed to take responsibility for that being that he never gave Tori or anyone a chance to decide on the issue to begin with. Tori was the leader and the buck stops with her, but how is she to be responsibile for someone elses lack of judgement?
I would never watch any show Dan would host, he just does not seem sincere to me. Antonio is the real deal and he is completely different from any host you currently see on designing television. I think his show would be fun and entertaining.
The producers didn't show the entire TRUTH….. Dan took back the 10,000. perg. that's why that little one looked so small. He came close to his budget and the editing was left on the production floor with a lot of other information left OUT!!!!!!!!!!! This is a reality show NOT CNN!!!!! Stop bashing Dan for something that did NOT happen!!!!!
O, really? Frankly, no. Antonio did not "repeat" Torie, he's not a parrot. They clearly discussed the budget.
Torie: "How much money do ya'll need?"
Antonio: "At least give us five grand, six grand."
Torie: "'Kay, that's $10,000, right there. You want to count it out while I finish drawing this?"
Dan: "I got $10,000 from Torie."
Torie: "I gave Dan $5000 for the pergola."
Dan: "Okay, here, I've got $5000."
Antonio: "So you didn't get $10k?"
Dan: "No, I got $5000."
Antonio: "No, she just said $10k…."
They two guys thought they had more than the $5,000 to work with, this is evident in that first discussion, just as it was evident in the second discussion.
They went shopping together. They selected the original design that cost $10,000 together. Yes, Antonio said they'll give us the final fee and we can discuss it together, but when it came time to discuss it everyone but Dan was gone. To have delayed meant not having the purchase at all, because they'd also requested the store to deliver and set the darned thing up.
Signing the contract didn't show poor judgement on his part at all. Had Antonio been there he'd have said 'go for it' or signed for it himself. Why? Because they both believed they had 10 grand to work with and the final tally was just a wee bit over by $684 of that 10k budget. This is confirmed by Dan in an interview:
"Antonio was with me when we shopped for the pergola and did not have an issue with the estimate of $10,000. We were told that this would not be a final price until the installer could inspect the site and create a final bid. I did approve and sign for a project that was slightly more that $10,000, but the budget issue was primarily resolved in the end and Antonio washed his hands of any responsibility," Dan explained.
So when the girls here the price tag from, they discuss the budget again:
Lonni: "You spent ten grand on the…? We had budgeted five when we were all talking about it in the car last night."
Antonio: "Huh…really?
Lonni: "Yeah."
Antonio: "Did we?"
Lonni: "Yeah."
After this convo everyone sits down while Torie tallies the total and discovers they're all way, way over budget. Then they have ANOTHER team budget discussion in which Antonio is clearly shown participating in.
So, later on in the show, the budget discussion is questioned by the judges.
Vern: "If you guys all decided together…?"
Antonio: "I can't say we all decided on the budget."
Vern to Antonio: "You were outside budget discussions?"
Antonio: "Yeah, yes."
So tell me again how Antonio didn't lie to Vern? Tell me again how it's all Dan's fault. Oh, and then tell me why HGTV didn't tell us the pergola budget issue was completely resolved and yet Torie was still in need of Clive's five grand. Because according to Dan, this issue was moot:
"There was, obviously, some big confusion about budget," Dan said after the show aired. "Nothing was ever in writing. Once Torie and Lonni came back and we realized the issue, we went back to vinyl store and made some major cutbacks.
"The original pergola, at $10,648, was raised, with steps, had railings, built-in furniture and included a matching arbor along the far end of the pool. After all the cuts, the final cost was $5,500," Vickery said.
"That's why I was laughing in the elimination room. I had made a huge mistake, but it was fixed and only $500 over budget. In the end we were still somehow $5,000 over budget. I had nothing to do with any other costs, so the remainder of the overage was baffling to me."
Tell me again how Dan threw Torie under the bus? A clear accounting of the facts shows your argument is full of holes and will never hold water.
Not to flog a dead horse but I would like to interject with the instance during the garage challenge when Lonni and Dan left and forgot to take any money with them. In case that was presented truthfully, without any creative editing, it's another instance of Dan's absent-mindedness about money. Dan is very talented, but in the future he should have an accountant or project manager who is on the ball because fiscal snafus can ruin you.
No, it's not "another" anything. He didn't forget the budget, both he and Antonio believed it was $10,000.
Yes, it was silly to go anywhere without money. That is all on the two of them, Lonni AND Dan. Not just Dan. However one moment of absentmindedness does not equate to repeated performances throughout the entirety of either person's career.
Maybe it speaks to Dan's inexperience with the business end of design.
Maybe it speaks to Lonni's inexperience with design? Why just single out Dan? What about Antonio? He 'forgot' to buy the paint. So obviously, by the standards Dan is being measured, we're supposed to assume that older and wiser Antonio will always & forever forget to pick up at least one paint color on every job shopping spree he goes on, until he either retires or dies. Right? Wrong!
See, this is the issue, a simple and even application of logic towards respective designers shows the flaw in the argument. It's nothing more than little nitpickers trying to make mountain out of molehills.
Well, if she changed the design with five hours left, why did anyone have to help her in the last 30 minutes? As far as the river rock is concerned, Antonio said they bought enough to fill in the entire area because that was their original plan. So it would seem that Lonni and Dan took it upon themselves to change the original plan without consulting the other two (Torri and Antonio). Tan paint on the walls, obviously all three never agreed on that from the start. There was a clip showing Dan & Antonio looking at paint samples, and it would appear from that he and Antonio both agreed on blue for the walls. Later in the van when they were discussing the paint Dan looked like he wasn't sure which side to be on. I don't mean for that to sound like a slam against Dan, because I think he really just wants everybody to get along. Why did they let Antonio shop for the paint when he was strongly opposed to the tan? If you will remember the judges told Dan and Torri they were lucky that Antonio overrode them on that. The pergola thing has been discussed to death and nobody is going to change their mind on that.
Good question, Sharon. The answer was she didn't need their help, but she didn't turn them away either. It's also interesting to note that this is the 3rd season where a challenger has been shown to aid their fellow designer in the White Room challenge. David was an incredible helper during the first season and he wasn't the only one helping either. Same for season three, and Torie in fact is shown to have helped Nathan out well before she went to help Lonni. I'm not seeing where it's such a unique thing for Antonio to have done. Nice, sure.
Regarding the rock issue, they had no set plan with it or the mulch, and in fact the team was still so massively over budget that both Dan and Lonni were trying to save on the rocks AND the mulch by using them sparingly and wisely. With the budget still over by $5000 after the pergola bungle was fixed, the team managed to have to take back loads of things for refunds, just to be at that $30,000 mark. Had Antonio let them continue, I think it could have turned out nicely-or not, we'll never know.
The paint issue, well both Dan and Antonio wanted the blues & Torie was all 'paint it tan'. However, they all AGREED to the color scheme of adding "tan" and when entrusted to get the necessaries, he accidentally on purpose forgot the tan. Personally, I'm glad he forgot the tan, the room didn't need it. I think Dan's whole issue was of trust. They trusted Antonio and he betrayed their trust. If he'd change the design on them without blinking or consulting, how were they then, as his teammates supposed to show their design input into the room?
fyi-Dan was told to take off his shirt by the producers-see DIYDIVA.com
I couldn't agree with you more about Antonio! Your comment was dead on!
Are you kidding me? That office was so blah and amateur-what exactly looked designer? A magnetic map?He is just not that talented design wise-would be better suited as a carpenter on a show. Lonnie was ripped off.
I'm with you Minnesota fan! I just don't get where people think Antonio is so rude and abrasive. Compared to a lot of people I know, he's not rude, he just tells it like it is. Clearly that was needed many times (including when he "forgot" to buy the ugly tan paint). I think it is probably more of a New Yorker vs. west coast thing. He was also the best at time management in many of the design challenges. The fact that he can build as well as design (although I will agree there is some room for improvement) makes him more unique. Get him a partner he can play off of and he'll have a great show. I'd watch every week!
I agree 100%
From the very beginning, I have liked Antonio's appeal and personality..I do not find him to be a bully or obnoxious..He is very knowledgeable in what he does.He is just one cofident man.
Good luck Antonio.
I AGREE WHOLE TOTALLY!! ANTONIO IS THE "JACK OF ALL TRADES" & IS GREAT AT ALL!!!
Jack ass is more like it!
I think you are right on about Antonio
I totally agree Minnesota fan. I also personally believe Dan is trying hard to be the next Designer star, following David lead (taking off the shirt, twice at that in the same episode. At least David did that in his own show, not prior winning. I don't think it wasn't that super hot, else any other guys would have done so, and there was no sign of him really sweating out there… In addition, he had to make a painting. It was a bit of copy cat of David to me! As for the ceiling art project, it was not that extraordinary! The judges will have done better keeping Loni in the show. As for Antonio, he may not have the best relationship with all the designers, but he has style, good design and he is very unique.
I agree whole heartedly with your take. Antonio has the comfort within to be a design star, but
Dan being young will be successful if he keeps at it.
I agree with you 100%. I am a real fan of David and Candice. They are the best on HGTV. I cannot stand Dan. He is so juvenile!!! Why is he on a show trying to get his own show when he has naked pictures posted all over the WEB. He is not even cute to me. His attempt on the pergola on the previous show fell way short of being anything short of pitiful. He needs to go. Time to have a real he-man with a show.
Finally someone I agree with! This is the first season I've watched Design Star and both my husband and I think Antonio is the hands down winner. He's so comfortable in front of the camera and we find him so entertaining. Dan is too much like all the other hosts HGTV already has. They need someone new who can bring something different to the table and Antonio is IT! LOVE HIM!
I wish the judges would admit they made a mistake and bring Lonnie back and do a repeat with the last three designers. Lonnie was the best one of the three and she couldn't help that she didn't have good installation help. I don't like Dan's giggling or boats on the ceiling and Antonio's design wasn't all that good. He should not have covered up the fireplace. We need a repeat of the last three or I'm not going to even watch your finale. I am always anxious to see the shows and tape them so I can watch at my leisure. This was so obviously unfair.
They have made a big mistake – Lonnie sholuld be the next DESIGN STAR! Blonde and Beautiful (and a Cally girl too) – she has the look!
LOL Antonio is a hairy tattooed slob and Dan is an oversized giggling idiot – Neither has any talent.
Squirrelly guys looking for a nut are a dime a dozen these days wake up HGTV……
I completely agree with Susie. Lonnie is the best of the three hands down, and I have lost interest in the whole finale thing. Sorry.
I agree. Lonnie hands down is better than Dan or Antonio. Lonnie missed with the headboard–small oops, but Antonio's design–yuK!!! I am so disappointed in Candace and Vern–Genieve, well is not the person I thought. She was just flirting with Antonio.
Lonni should have won this season. The fact that Antonio is still there and Lonni is gone, let's me know that Design Star has sold out or has "fixed" the results in such a way they think will help the ratings. Sorry guys… I would not let Antonio decorate my house. I would not watch a show hosted by Antonio. I may not watch Design Star again if he wins. HGTV in general will have taken a blow to their credibiilty as far as I'm concerned.
Think of last season. The designers were so professional and the last two standing were really good designers. On the last challenge, Matt made decisions that would help Jen. It was a great show. Antonio, this season, has gone out of his way to create confusion and undermine the other designers. The judges keep rewarding his horrible behavior and lack of taste or style.
In the absence of Lonni, the real winner, I'll take Dan any day!
Lonnie should not have been eliminated, Antonio should have been. His office was the most boring space I have ever seen. The colors were dull and everything was up against the all. Yuk – he needs a design intervention. However much I wish Lonnie had not been eliminated, I wanted to scream when she decided upon her focal wall. Hello, Lonnie, been there, done that! She should have gone up against Dan. THE JUDGES FLUNKED OUT ON THIS ONE. I do like Dan's ideas and execution. But in the end, it should have been Lonnie's show.
Fireplaces are for relaxation and being snuggly, not for a work room.
I am a Web site designer. I work from home in front of my fireplace. Aside from the warmth, it comforts me, and when I'm comfortable, I'm much more productive. If Kathy's assistants work hard at their cubicles, they should have a place to relax and toss out ideas to the others.
really you can not expect the designers or us at home to accept that anyone can be picked to help with your room and if they mess up you are at fault…that's a tough one to swallow. Had the designers at anytime been able to pick help themselves it would have had an entirely different feeling…this just left you feeling really crummy. Lonnie was excellent…this was very wrong.
I absolutely agree. Lonnie was much better than the other two.
