Challenge 9: Meet Your New Design Star, Part 2
We received over 3,000 comments (wow!) after last night’s big announcement that Antonio is the new Design Star!

We’re experiencing some problems right now with last night’s post, but we’re working hard to fix them. In the meantime, we want everyone to have their say so feel free to continue the conversation here.

I am so glad Antonio won. HGTV needed someone different alot of the shows were starting to look the same.
HGTV is really trying to do some damage control now removign all the posts! 95% of people are saying to BOYCOTT HGTV, Boycott advertisers, Watch TLC or Food Network because of the selection of Antonio. Vern, Candice and Gen have lost my respect. They sacrificed their design integrity by going along with this choice. Dan was clearly superior in color selection, design concepts, staging and personal appeal. And now they post a few fake approvals of Antonio at the top of this blog. Can't fool me!
Everyone in my h ousehold has already decided we will be watching more Food Newtork and the major newtworks Fall Line up rather than HGTV, it's just nonsense. We all watched HGTV to learn about design or real estate, etc..but if this is what they call talent and the direction this station is taking, we are OUT>
And then of course…we have GUY FIERI on the Food Network. He was a rebel in his day. Did people think he was the best cook? Was he the best talent? I don't think so. But look at him now… everyone loves him and he has made it big for Food Network.
Guy could at least cook1
Advertisers are almost immune to boycotts because of immature folks like yourself who wants to have a tantrum every time you don't get your way. This is just a television show not a political hack calling for the death of the US Speaker of the House wherein it is appropriate to boycott sponsors.
Just as there is scale in design, there is scale in response to television show networks and you fail immensely in your response here. It is unkind, nasty, and over the top. Turn off your damn television and take a walk or something to calm down your psychotic response to a contest in which you were not even a participant .
The vituperative tone shows a really dangerous attitude and its a shame that you try to spoil it for every one else. If you support Dan so much, please go to his designs, rate them and wish him well and make any suggestions that might help him with feeling down. You could, at least, contribute to making him feel like a winner instead of spreading your dvisiveness and spewing hatred all over the world in this forum.
Antonio is clearly the winner and I find him very engaging and so did his clients. We don't all come out of the same package, our society is divergent, and it was time for HGTV to add a bit different perspective and Antonio will fill that bill perfectly.
The way this blog works, it could be a handful of folks with small computer programs doing all the voting and voting multiple times. That is why the judges make the decisions. Besides the fact that the judges have lots more information than we do.
You are having a blowout based on the cuts HGTV decided to show us of the whole process. Get real and grow up. Your tantrum is boring.
You are a person of profound mental retardation having a mental age below three years and generally being unable to learn connected speech or guard against common dangers. The term belongs to a classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensive.
idiot!
LOL!
Well obviously you had nothing better to do than to come on this particular blog and post how awful everyone is for having opinions. I know the kind of person you are. You feed off of making people feel inferior to you but you can only do so through blogs and other written communication because you would be the inferior one if it were in person. I bet you have a thesaurus on hand so you can look up all those fancy words to make yourself appear smarter. I see right through you my dear.
This is not a tantrum and you are in the minority. Are we, loyal fans of HGTV, supposed to either sit back and not voice our opinions when we are obviously in the majority or simply stop watching? And advertisers are certainly not immune to public opinion! Actually, HGTV should appreciate the feedback they are getting so they can try to repair damage they have done with their viewers.
great post Ann. Amen to every word you said!!
Do you feel better now? It wasn't about "spewing hatred". The outrage was over the process and it was clear who had the most design talent, and yo, it wasn't antonio. Just becasue he "won" doesn't make him all the sudden anything more than a set designer. And did you know, it's the scenic artists that make sets look good, not the set designer?
I have never blogged or written anything on a site before now…but I have to say I had trouble going to bed last night after the final! What an injustice. It was clear that the network had something to do with the choice, because Dan by far was the best choice. HIs design took into consideration the family's space issues, color choices and the function of each element…Antonio "decorated" plus made a few structural changes. The judges always define the importance of differentiating between design and decorating. The only logical conclusion after last night's decision was that the network was trying to pull in a new type of audience. I can say, that although I am a fellow New Yorker and I can appreciate Antonio's "shtick", I will not be one of those watching his TV show. I hope that the network realizes that with the addition of some temporary audience members, that they might be losing some loyal fans.
I agree. After rewatching both men and looking over there rooms. Antonio rooms look nothing like Dan's. Trust me if he would of done my house i would of not of been like the couple in the show. What do you expect when they are getting a total house make over. I agree BOYCOTT HGTV.
I agree BOYCOTT HGTV, I will not be watching the shows anymore. Dan should have won. It was all fixed against Dan, he didn't have a chances.
I agree Dan should have won this hands down.
I don't know about damage control, but as of mid 9/17 inside the 3042 COMMENT Blog before this one is now shows 1985 comments. Inside This 2158 COMMENT Blog II is now shows 900 comments. IS the counter messed up? or..
What I wanted to share was (just like our HGTV going "Bad" ~ That is THEIR word " big bad bold!") is the new marketing for the Mini, remember the fun~ sparky~ "let's Motor" campaign? well NOW it's trashy women with their middle fingers in the air! you think I jest! SO just to say our culture's trend is DOWN at the moment…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox9GnXk7qxc&fe...
You will just be replaced by other viewers and unless you have a box, no one will ever know.
Betty, are you a real person or just another HGTV illusion? And how did the first four posts come out in favor of antonio when the 3000+ other posts that have been removed were something like 95% in favor of DAN? Hope Dan got to read the blog. He really was America's choice.
I had the first posting last night and had over 100 replies..only 2 or 3 disagreed that it was 'a crock'. After I posted it, my ability to login was compromised. I was able to post comments but NOT able to vote. I had to change my user name in order to login today. I suppose by today most of Dan's fans are so disgusted that they don't see any point in further commenting (after more than 3000 responses that mysteriously disappeared), thus the 'pro Antonio' comments posting early here. The whole Design Star season was such a waste of time. I'm especially pissed off that I fell for it! It won't happen again…I see no reason to watch it through another season.
I sympathize with you. I am so mad they took the other blog down. It is just so much BS, I can't stand it.
OMG! Taking down all the posts!!! HGTV what a scam! You have no idea in the power of the masses and now you are just making it worse. I think less of you now than I did 12 hours ago..if that is even possible!
OMG!!!! People get a grip! It's a TV show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know! People need to grow up!! They are trying to see conspiracy theories everywhere! There IS such thing as server overload when too many people come on and try to comment! Happens all the time! Everyone is overreacting so just calm down….
I agree. Afterall, this is only a TV show for heaven's sake. Both were good. Both were different.
Take a look at DIY channel….lots of Antonio types there..so why not one on HGTV. If you don't like it, then watch something else.
Dan will have a great future and things happen the way they do for reasons. We don't all get our way or get what we want, but when we are wise we take the lessons positively and learn from them. Then come back stronger because we have addressed our weaknesses.
Dan will take lemons and make lemonade. He is bright, personable, attractive, and talented. He just need a bit more experience in life and he will go far.
But I picked Antonio from the beginning and never faltered in realizing he had what it takes to be a Design Star. So far everyone required grooming and further polish before their shows were ready to appear. I look for great things from Antonio because he is willing to take the risks and Dan played it a bit safe. Antonio relied on his own instincts and wasn't afraid to stand up for what he believed in. He was warm and appreciative with his workers in every sense.
Just seems like the tantrums are way out of proportion to the fact you mentioned, it is a television show. I find myself totally amazed at the level of response and the suggestions of conspiracies. The network can make any decision they feel balances out their programming.
He had the on camera personality perhaps but certainly not the design talent. I think the judges totally sold out to the producers. I will not be watching Antonio. I thogh he was a total jerk in all the team challenges. A real A**H***
HGTV OBVIOUSLY PUT THIS UP. WE ARE WITH DAN. HGTV, IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN YOUR VIEWERS, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAN IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!
We're not all with Dan! He lied to the judges… and he wasn't interesting to watch. Sorry, if I wanted to watch a show on decorating, I would open my JC Penney catalogue. Antonio was more interesting and his rooms were his own design, not a carbon copy of every other predictable room out there. There are a lot of viewers who like Antonio. I personally thought he was pretty funny! I look forward to watching his show.
I am also Betty and I am NOT glad Antonio won. He is different all right. And not in a good way. I personally feel this outocome was planned from the beginning and I don't think HGTV was ready for the outrage when the best designer was shafted.
I agree completely!!!! Antonio is overbearing and steps all over the designers. If that's what HGTV wants, they can have him. I will not watch his show and will start watching more of the other channels. I'm very disappointed in the judges. I knew 1/2 way through the show that he was going to win, because they made it soooo obvious! I will not watch any more design star shows either. What's the point!
Antonio is edgy but not endearing and I am so disappointed that "personality" was chosen over talent. Dan put together very well thought out and planned rooms. Antonia got some of it right but so much was lacking, even the judges commented on these things. I am a devoted HGTV fan but will NOT watch Antonio. I'll switch to whatever else I can find.
The the judges blew it… Dan out did Antonio on the last two competitions. Compare if possible the chilrdrens rooms. Dan's design hit the mark, meeting all of requirments plus and Antonio's design was a blank room with stars on the wall. Furniture placement in Antonio's living room was the before for most HGTV design shows. Antonio is a new face without the design talent of Dan. Judges you blew it and HGTV is going to suffer for your lack of good judgement (Candice I thought you were better than this decision).
I find it rather distasteful that HGTV is marketing Antonio as.."Meet YOUR new Design Star." It shoudl say "Meet OUR new Design Star." I would not have voted for antonio, sorry. Dan had design skills that far surpassed Antonio's. When Antonio starts his new show and they actually give him a designer and stager, we will figure that out. If his rooms start to look more in scale with more pleaseing flow and color palettes, well, that will just signal that HGTV really didn't like his style either. It will be obvious, but I wont watch.
I AGREE WITH YOU COMPLETELY. ANTONIO IS CERTAINLY NOT MY DESIGN STAR! DAN SHOULD HAVE WON! THEY SHOULD HAVE SKIPPED THE DRAMA AND JUST GIVEN HIM THE SHOW. HE WILL NOT LAST.
I think Antonio's designs were varied and interesting. I also think his interpersonal style is sometimes unpleasant to observe, so I'll tune out if he goes on a bossy ego trip. The other problem came into focus for me last night when Candice said ".. and I don't even think you know you're doing it " (certain design elements). I never learned a thing listening to any of his reveals. He couldn't teach me what he did, because it "just comes together" for him. I watch the shows to learn how to do stuff for myself and how to pick someone when I need to hire a pro. I don't think I'll get that from Antonio, although I may be entertained for a half hour. Dan was much better at designing consistently and at explaining his concepts and approach. His nervousness, however, often made him seem fake and he was too blatant in his efforts to mimic David B. (whom I LOVE). I hope next season, we'll get more insight into why the judges make the selections they do because, bottom line, I'm not sure the two best candidates made it to the finals.
It's clear to me now that the reason why there were so many group challenges on this season of Design Star was to minimize Antonio's weaknesses on the individual challenges. Nice try HGTV!!
EXACTLY! AND EVEN THEN, HE SHOWED HE IS NOT A TEAM PLAYER!
Nothing could be more refreshing than the addition of Antonio to the HGTV family and the kind of meanness that is being written in this forum is sad. Some folks need to grow up and realize that in real life we don't get everything we want. The ugliness of the tantrums thrown by some of the most immature, uncivil watchers is unreal.
When a political hack threatens the life of the Speaker of the House and calls the President of the US a racist, that is reason to discuss boycotting advertisers, but simply to get their way is selfish and dangerous. Very simple to turn the channel but to vomit out such hatred over a design contest is unbelievable. Most spoiled behavior I have ever seen exhibited. As far as Dan's future is concerned, he has plenty of time while working as a waiter to pursue further experiences in design. He lacked practicality many times. I sure wouldn't want travertine in a kitchen. Requires far too much maintenance (sealing) to be able to clean and avoid trapped soil because of the porous nature of the stone. And that backslash would be a nightmare to keep clean, so unsanitary.
Dan is 27 yrs old and needs experience in life before he starts making decisions that effect people's lives so much. There was no color in that kitchen. None other than the dark cabinets, and then all seeming white to the eye with a dash of gray in the granite.
A lot of real inappropriate, hateful comments from people that need to cover their backsides since they are showing them, big time. What happened to the old saw about "if you can't say something good, then don't say anything at all?"
But spewing all this craziness and threatening HGTV makes a sad statement to the state of mental health in the United States presently.
Get a grip, folks. This is not your playpen and the rest of us are adults. The children exhibiting the psychotic behavior can return to their rooms.
I find Antonio endearing and so does my mother who is 84 yrs old. He was fearless and relied on his own instincts when Dan copies everyone and failed when it didn't come together. Everything about Antonio's room came together and his colors were uplifting, where Dan copied Antonio's color from last week because Candace remarked that it was a hot color. Dan made a much better showing last week for cohesiveness.
Congrats, Antonio. You have the heart and passion and that led you to take the necessary risks to win this competition. You also were a gracious and inspiring winner, so warm and inclusive with Dan. You always exhibited such appreciation for your crews and that is a huge part of success. Dan left his carpenters waiting on him 5 hours. Huge waste of money.
Dan was also cavalier about being over budget and lacked the ability to accept responsibility for his errors. That is a character flaw and I hope a bit more maturity will take care of that. Best wishes for a wonderful to you, Dan. Your time will come and this was not it.
Antonio was clearly the winner and it disappoints me greatly to see such volatile behavior repleat with threats of boycotts and punishments from spoiled brats who didn't get their way. I can't wait to see Antonio's shows. Look forward with great anticipation and David B even counted Antonio the winner.
Don't bring politics into this!!!
Decisionmaking is political by nature.
You mentioned a lot of good points! Glad someone else on here see's the behavior that people are representing them selves with.
OF COURSE, HGTV PUT DAVID B. UP TO IT. I HAVE NOT WATCHED HGTV ALL DAY.
Ann Cummins wrote: "What happened to the old saw about 'if you can't say something good, then don't say anything at all'?"
Ann, then why are you posting? You say people who don't like that Antonio won are "spewing all this craziness" and are a "sad statement to the state of mental health in the United States presently." That doesn't sound like you are taking your own advice.
You then lecture the people who thought Dan should have won: "Get a grip, folks. This is not your playpen and the rest of us are adults. The children exhibiting the psychotic behavior can return to their rooms."
Sorry, but everyone has the right to post what they want. Even you. But your comments are no more "adult" than the people you refer to as "spoiled brats." Just because you disagree with people it doesn't mean they are "psychotic".
Thank you. Must acknowledge the accuracy of your comments. I have responded more in-kind than I realized and it was fair for you to point it out. But I am flabbergasted at the tenor of the commenting.
Sorry, I didn't mean to be singling you out. I agree that some of the comments have been insulting to Antonio. I don't think he should have won, but that doesn't mean that I think that it is OK to insult him.
PaintyKat and Ann Cummins are one in the same. I signed in at Intense Debate and it automatically inserted the PaintyKat and I didn't notice before I hit "submit comment."
Didn't mean to be confusing.
You're so cute trying to be so smart
Interesting that you are dismayed by the comments here on the blog but not by Antonio's over the top arrogance, lack of teamwork skills and general bully behavior. I never saw him exhibit a single moment of "gracious" behavior. You are certainly inconsistent in your observations.
Antonio helped Loni finish her white room. He connected with the little boy whose room he designed – I can tell he's probably been around a lot of kids. Dan, on the other hand, seemed a little awkward… and he lied to the judges. Come on, people… even Dan had a guilty look on his face when he told the judges the money screw up wasn't his fault. Antonio seemed to really care about the families he designed for. I like both Dan & Antonio's rooms… but Dan's seemed more decorated… and predictable… any of us could pick out pretty colors that go together. Antonio's rooms were his own designs, and unexpected… Antonio is more interesting than Dan. Either way, you guys are all being really childish by saying you'll never watch the show again. Grow up!
Your lengthy diatribe is inane. To talk down to others that have a differing viewpoint is childish; and to inject the conversation with politics makes no sense. This is a design show, not a campaign for governor.
To put it simply, based on the last challenge, Dan was clearly the winner. Dan's home was a cohesive, well thought out design. Antonio's was not. Even he admitted that he basically just comes up with stuff off the top of his head. In other words, there is no rhyme or reason to his choices. Take the living room for example: Slate blue walls, lime green curtains, red and white patterns chair, garage sale armoire. This is not the living room of a family that is just starting out. It's just an eclectic random choice of elements thrown together. Did any of Antonio's rooms relate to each other in any way? No. The kitchen couldn't have been more different than the living room. Aren't these spaces next to each other?
It was very clear that Antonio was chosen because of his hosting skills. Nothing more. Based on the reaction of the majority of posters here, you know what I'm saying is true.
While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think I am not alone in feeling that while Dan's designs were tasteful in a serene sort of way, many of us would not want to live in a house where the color palette was shades of purple with dashes of burgundy for accents in every single room. His home was harmonious, but predictable by the second or third room. I enjoyed the colors of Antonio's living room and loved the way the colors of the tv cabinet were utilized throughout the room in different ways. All ideas come off the top of our heads in some way; but that Antonio's were less predictable is one of the reasons it is fun to watch.
I think your character flaws are jumping to conclusions and thinking you're better than everyone
Why is it that when I post I am limited to a certain amount of length for the post?
I agree 100%! I really look forward to seeing Antonio's show. All of you guys spewing so much hate need to grow up.
Antonio winning was a BIG, BIG mistake! BIG! I've loved watching HGTV and thought you guys cared about who can design the best, but that isn't the case. You wanted someone with the look and actions of a rebel. Well, you got him and lost me. Dan's designs were hands down better than Antonio's. He was a little shy on camera but that just made him all the better to me. Dan always had something that was just enough different – and was thinking of what his clients might really like. His designs were much more professional and finished. I was looking forward to seeing more. Antonio was a bully, full of himself. rude to everyone around him, difficult, bossy, made life difficult for the rest of the group, and his designs lack the REALLY professional look that they should have had. Shame on HGTV for not picking the best designer. I don't watch HGTV for the personalities I watch for the ideas and the concepts. Antonio is terrible!!
Antonio, really? Dan's designs were superior from the get go. So dissapointed in my favorite designers Candice and Gen. Design Star fan no more!
Antonio is an awful designer. Dan should have won.. I hope Dan has a great career ahead of him. I won't watch Antonios show.
I have been a big HGTV fan for several years but it might be the end of the road for me. Why would they choose Antonio when throughout the competition he revealed that he was arrogant, beligerant, dishonest, and not to mention – NOT VERY GOOD. I am just disgusted with the choice. The judges, whose shows I've always enjoyed, have lost my respect for participating in this sham. Shame on you HGTV.
I am very disappointed that Antonio won last night. Dan's design was so superior in every imaginable way. Dan's hosting ability and personality is also more pleasing. Antonio is rude, abrasive and generally unpleasant to watch. While I will not boycott HGTV, I also will NOT WATCH any show hosted by Antonio or even one that he appears in. Dan was robbed of this opportunity and I don't know why. The judges have lost my respect and I was a huge Candice fan. I would relish the chance for Dan to design any room in my home. Dan, if you're out there reading these blogs, please know your efforts and design ability are appreciated! I wish Dan only the best in the future!!!
Me too. Now I'll have a nice 30 minutes to go do the chores that don't get done while I'm watching other HGTV shows.
No way will I watch Antonio's show EVER!!!!
Will never, ever, watch Antonio's show. My mom and our friends were so upset 2 weeks ago when he wasn't eliminated that they decided they weren't going to watch Genevieve, Vern, or Candace either. I thought they were going too far, but I now agree with them. The judges made the absolute wrong decision. Sure, he can be funny as a host and his crooked teeth give him character, but his designs and his ethics leave much to be desired. I will NOT be watching, even to be curious, because I don't care! He did not deserve it.
I'm trying to figure out why Antonio won and the only thing I can come up with is that Dan was too much like David (only better). I do think all the catty comments on David's blog revealed that he felt threatened. I feel insulted and upset that Dan didn't win. He was so much more qualified. Dan said that he felt it all came down to hosting. Antonio does have more confidence but he is an arrogant jerk, I will not watch his show. In fact I'm not watching HGTV anymore. Are you listening?
Antonio was more honest than Dan. Are you forgetting that Dan lied to the judges? Antonio helped Loni finish her white room. I didn't see Antonio as arrogant at all. Give him a chance – I think he'll do a great job.
Totally agree and am looking forward to Antonio's show. Well done to the judges for appreciating the fact that diversity is important in programming- but he wouldm't have gotten so far without being talented as well as vastly entertaining.
You are right about that. He is definitely different, and not in a good way!!HE SHOULD BE HOSTING A SHOW ON RAW NOT on HGTV. Dan is a better designer anyway
YAY! YAY! -The best designer won! Dan is a good decorator, but often screwed up with the basic
plan: The kitchen counters that didn't matchup, the garage door that should have been replaced,
and the last challenge- the backsplash that wasn't finished.
Sorry 'bout all the sour grapes you guys.
I agree with you there. I see Dan as a decorator… but I see Antonio as a designer. Dan's rooms looked too much like every other room out there – like a JC Penney catalogue page… but Antonio seemed to be a little more edgy & tried some things that were unexpected. I'm going to LOVE watching Antonio's show – I think he's going to come up with some cool designs. And he's interesting to watch, and was by far the superior host of all the contestants.
Antonio's win over Dan is a travesty – clearly this program should fess up to tell viewers that the winner will not be the most talented design star with the best presenting skills, but a selection forced by the producers of HGTV aimed at getting a larger audience share from a younger demographic. They will soon discover that people who actually spend money with advertisers will not tune in to a program where mediocre design is presented by someone who can't even speak proper English. TURN OFF HGTV – don't let them dupe us any longer with rigged programs! And SHAME on you Candace and Vern, in particular – we know you know better than that! You sold yourself out to HGTV. SHAME!
I think Antonio deserved to win. His designs were good, his hosting was far superior to Dan… he helped Loni when she couldn't finish her room, he had integrity, unlike Dan – who lied to the judges about whose fault the money mix up was. We could all recreate Dan's rooms with a little help from a JC Penney catalogue. Dan's rooms were well decorated… but Antonio was superior as far as taking a chance and putting his own mark on the room. Plus, you guys posting this stuff, are pretty mean. Come on, it's a tv show!
Thank you for being fair, I personally look forward to watching a show that is different.
I try to add comments, but keep getting cut off. My long comments are not posted…how do others get the long posts included in favor of antonio? Anyways…I wanted to reply to who ever thought that next year, it should be ALL INDIVIDUAL challenges….I agree! I really enjoy seeing what each designer can do and the team challenges always get too dramatic. For the later contests, give designers a team of carpenters and painters. And please, make sure designers listen to homeowners wishes. That should be part of the criteria for staying week-to-week.
wrong, Dan was a much better designer, I will not be supporting Antonio, hope his ratings are bad and they end his show after it starts.
I disagree.
I agree. Dan did a good job, but his rooms were a little boring, like JC Penney catalog pages. Plus, I didn't like that he wasn't honest about the money mix up – he apologized in private & said it was his fault.. but in front of the judges, he blamed Tori. He even looked ashamed of himself when he said it, that it wasn't his fault. Antonio had better character – he helped Loni when she couldn't finish her white room.. and he really cared about the family in the last challenge. Dan kept taking off his shirt – come on! Please! that is such a copy cat! They both did a good job designing, but Antonio was just more interesting to watch. And I liked his personality better. He has a warm, confident attitude & isn't afraid to take charge of the design. Did any of you guys posting so much hate forget how Dan lied to the judges about whose fault the money mix up was? I like Antonio & think he's going to have a great show. I look forward to watching it.
Me too. Plus I liked him. Antonio had character. Dan lied… and giggled… and took off his shirt too much.
Yes, if the criteria for a show is "different" HGTV could find "different" in a carnival side show. What I thought the goal for this show was competance abd design ability. If the three judges are actually responsible for the final outcome, a lot of the blame is on Candice's doorstep. It was obvious from the git-go that she was gung ho and hot to trot for Antonio from the start. Vern, where's your back bone?
Do you mean that the shows on HGTV were all starting to look the same because they were all starting to look good? That is how most of the people saw Dan's work as really creative inspiring designs. They were the kind that made you want to see more, the kind of design that would keep you coming back for the next week's installment. An on-line site is not going to keep me on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next online posting.
It will be easy to not watch Antonio's show because his designs according to most of the blogs, (including mine), did not inspire, and were not going to entice me to watch his show.
Actions speak louder than words, Don't watch Antonio's show.
Vern Yip stated that they picked Antonio because he "has such a distinctive voice as a designer".
We fans do not believe that Antonio was chosen for his "distinctive voice as a designer" because he has little if any design skills and couldn't verbalize/explain any design work in the hosting reveal. The show was supposed to be for selecting a DESIGN STAR. Dan should have been the winner of Design Star and Lonni should have then been the winner of the online show. We want designs that we can use in our own homes, not some crazy mis-matched, mis-scaled junk. I will not watch Antonio's show but will definitely watch Dan's show.
Dear Betty,
Mine was the first comment. It said, "what a fix from the top down. I will never watch hgtv again. I intend to contact all the advertisers to tell them of my displeasure." I am happy to say I have done so. In what department of hgtv do you work, Betty? Know this won't last long. They take down all comments that disagree with them. Unfortunately for you Betty America seems to disagree with you.
Keep waiting for six pack joe to turn off the game and tune into your new pick. Eternity will be shorter.
My three grown daughters and I were delighted to see Antonio win the contest. We are die-hard HGTV fans, and this decision gives us a reason to turn it off and do something else.
Dan is a talented designer but too much like what HG already has in David Bromstad. Love the addition of Antonio to the network. Can't wait to see the funky, fun designs he brings to the table. Design diversity is something to be embraced.
like cereal in bowls as a design statement
AGAIN, THIS IS PROBABLY HGTV. DAN WAS AND IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If he could host he might have had a chance…"Dan was and is the best"…please he didnt win.. again he didnt win!!!
I do like Antonio's personality and will enjoy watching him build things. The funny thing about "Design Star," however, is that it wasn't really a design contest. On pure design, Dan won. Rather, it was a contest for a new television show. And Antonio is new and diffierent from HGTV's current line-up. I voted 10 times today for Dan to get the on-line show!!!
THIS I agree with… well said. I don't think ANY ill will should go towards Antonio for being a different design contestant and I wish people's opinions were nicer. BUT, there is no doubt in my mind after watching this season that Dan was the guy to beat, was well-rounded and multi-talented. I am a student pursuing a degree in design and what failed here wasn't the designers, it was the "drama" and "intrigue" that producers must feel we are after. As a student this was an opportunity to show what designers do and how they do it… and the gameshow/reality thing was NOT great!
Keep up your responsibility role HGTV. You are boldly in the public eye for presenting this genre of entertainment and information to TONS of viewers who look to you for perpetuating a better side of this industry than the edited catfights. Please please please make good decisions going forward.
So Dan didn't win because he's too much like David?????? Isn't the point of the show to find the most talented designer? Maybe if Dan would have dropped more F-bombs and spoke with horrible grammar he would have gotten the job.
As stated repeatedly, HGTV was asking who should get a design show on their network. They weren't asking who was the best designer. If that were the case, then Lonnie was a great designer but would have been another blond, beautiful women, which they have enough already.
Antonio brings something very refreshing and new and he didn't use the F-bomb so I can only guess, charitably, you might be attention challenged. The judges selected Antonio for his own HGTV show and I can't wait until next fall for it start. Using over punctuation on a blog is just as much of a flaw as using poor grammar.
Improve thyself before attacking others. When you can demonstrate perfection, then and only then can apply for the position of grammar police.
LOL!! That about sums it up!
Why is everyone saying Dan is like David Bromstad? All of his designs have been very different. I feel his last design was more along the lines of Candice Olson who does beautiful design. That's why I was so surprises that Candice liked Antonio's designs. The only good thing was how he moved the door to the bathroom, but everything else he did sucked.
Congrats to Antonio! He looked great at the final judging. I hope he keeps the classier look. Very handsome.
He's a people person and seems to want to please others whether some like it or not. You need an individualist like Antonio.
Van
Agreed. One David Bromstad is more than enough.
You are so right. David and Dan's designs are similar. They are both good. Something that makes me watch HGTV. Won't be watching Antonio though, hope the advertisers get the idea. My favorite design faux pas of Antonio's were those low stools in the child's room. They were not useful or attractive. I guess the functional seating was with the storage for the toys, which was not in his finished room. The room was barren.
You have got to be kidding-arrogant , horrible design skills and terrible hosting skills. Sandy you must be related to Antonio. Do you skip bathing, have bad teeth and have gross tatoos also?
You are so right! Bromstad and Dan's designs are both great!!! (and that is so different than Antonio's designs)
Finally someone so different on TV that will bring that extra edge to a design show. I love the fact he is a man whom loves design! My husband and I were cheering for him!
I am sure Dan will do well he is also very talented, best of luck to you.
Yes!! I agree, my husband for once was interested in the show. Usually I watch by myself, he can identify with Antonio. His show will have an expanded audience, I can bet on that.
Dan should have won hands down!!! Antonio does not have the hosting skills, he spoke too fast and did not make any sense. His design elements in the little boys room were amature to say the least. The couple looked confused and a little upset after the reveal of their master bedroom when Antonio kept screaming, "Where's your bafroom" I can't believe Dan did not win. He made a home for the family he designed for. His white room challenge was totally artistic, and the bedroom he did for Jason Preistly's son blew Antonios little boys room out of the water.
Shame on you. Antonio was screaming anything
I thought I heard 2 people cheering when Antonio won.
Congratulations Antonio….I'll be watching!!!
YOU'LL BE THE ONLY ONE.
That is so rude!! You have no grace "beautyhasgrace" Didn't your momma ever tell you that if you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all????
What is up with these hostile Dan fans? This is really getting ugly. Dan is talented and is sure to be destined for a bright future. So he didn't get the show, but that doesn't mean bigger and better things aren't in his future. Let Antonio enjoy his victory and have a shot at success. Seriously now…let's be gracious.
I will be watching Antonio's shows too. I was so glad that the won, and my husband is glad too. Now maybe he will watch HGTV with me. Good work, designer judges
After reading only 3 pages of blogs, seems like you may be one of 30!
Hmmm…I wonder what the "problem" with the other blog is, HGTV? Oh, I know…98% of your viewers are furious at being taken by a rigged contest with a dirty no-talent carpenter as a winner. The comments show that your plan of getting an edgy Design Star totally backfired. If you wanted Antonio to have a show, why not just give it to him?
The "problem" was that the vast majority of comments were FOR Dan and AGAINST Antonio!!!
How do you know that?
Wow, literally thousands of messages were deleted from this blog – they deleted messages from people who were upset with the fact that Dan wasn't chosen the winner as he was CLEARLY the WINNER and we all know that fact. Other messages showing that WE know what they did with pre-choosing Antonio were also deleted and they will probably delete this one too. HGTV is totally corrupt and it SUCKS because it used to be my favorite channel. This is all totally disgusting!
How is it that some people are offended that Antonio got picked? Dan was a good designer with NO personality whatsoever. Most of his designs appealed to feminine sensibilities, which is probably why most of the complaints in this posts are from women who didn't get their way. GROW UP. You got a "freebie" last year.
Everbody knows that Matt was 10 times the designer that Jennifer was, certainly in the competition. He designed and built furniture while she painted things…. but because DESIGN STARS audience is like 90% female(or feminine), Jennifer got the vote. NOT FAIR. But this is not at all about being fair. It's about being equitable. Why not have an edgy, straight, non conventional designer win? When was the last time you saw one of those hosting a show on HGTV?
I wish the design snobs that write their elitist comments here would just find someone else to pick on. Antonio won and he'll do well because he's just bold enough to be himself.
Dan Lost Get Over IT!!!
Jimmy Carter said life is not fair. Probably a kinder comment to use in the future.
I think HGTV will realize that their pick was unwise if they look at the blogs.
Best thing to do is not watch his shows and email the advertisers for his show that we are not watching.
EXACTLY!!! My husband was so upset, he kept repeating it all night. DAN WAS THE BEST AND IT IS COMPLETELY UNFAIR THAT THEY GAVE TO ANTONIO. I WILL NOT BE WATCHING HIS SHOW BECAUSE HIS DESIGN IS POOR, AND HE IS VERY RUDE AND ARROGANT.
I never once saw him be rude or arrogant. It's called confidence people!! He wasn't going to risk his future for the cast of the show. It's fight or flight and instead of giving in he decided to fight!! Antonio won….get over it!!
Then, you weren't really watching. Because he has an ego the size of a house. UGH.
your handle makes a hypocrite out of you
I do think it is suspect that only last night's blog is have technical difficulties…something like that would usually take the ENTIRE blog down, not just one thread. And I think there was a reason this year's show wasn't up to a fan vote. Nothing against Antonio, HGTV is the one to blame here.
Most likely not hosted on the same server. Sounds like it wasn't much of a loss if the tantrums match those that are displayed here now.
Folks who are suggesting Antonio's behavior was crass are flat out showing their butts. A real shame.
Antonio won and Dan will have a blessed future. Some of the folks here, I am not sure.
More likely HGTV is embarrased (for Antonio) by the outrage and landslide comments for Dan. I agree this shouldn't be a personal attack on Antonio, but HGTV really owes him, Dan and their viewers an apology. If they really wanted to have the thread back up for viewing, they probably could by now…it has be almost 24 hours since it went down.
"flat out showing their butts"??!! I can tell you must be a friend or relative of Antonio's! Cut from the same cloth of class–NOT! Sorry, but HGTV viewers don't find it attractive or clever.
Amy – completely agree with you. Dan was clearly the better designer. What's the show about again? To find the next HGTV personality? I don't watch HGTV for a personality – I'm looking for actual design inspiration. Antonio's NOT a designer; he's a set designer. When did he actually step out of set design and do a real house. That cabinet he cut for the fireplace mantel…OMG. The couch that ended up being 3 feet away from the tv…he's not a designer for real life! Last time I was Design Star.
You may think he was the better designer, but fortunately the world doesn't run on your opinion. You seem to be forgetting that the rest of the world has their own opinions as well. And many of which feel that Antonio was the better designer. You can't say that Dan was clearly the better designer as if it were a fact because it's not, it's only an opinion!!
The opinion that Dan is the better designer is shared by many!! I will not be watching Antonio's show. His choice of color pallette is an assault on the eyes!! Dan's designs have mass appeal and style.
And so is your opinion about Antonio. The winner was definitely chosen by HGTV to give a little edge to their lackluster programming. The judges were most likely given their marching orders at the very beginning of the contest: bring HGTV something different. And that's exactly what HGTV got delivered to them on a silver platter. Now watch their tepid ratings take a dive.
If you google the results of the show, you will see that Antonio already has his show in progress and he is going to be making over his own house first. Hmmm. Didn't trust him with someone else's place???? I can see him making garages over into man caves but even THAT is stretching his ability to design anything of quality.
"[M]any of which…"?! Honey–er, I mean, Leslie–you seem to be the only one posting here whose in favor of Antonio!
By the way, it's apalling that they already had his first show in the bag, and ready to air, before "Design Star" was even finished airing! What the heck does THAT tell us?! The woman who won last year hasn't even had her show on yet!
I have to agree with you 100%. Dan and Antonio were two of my favorite. But I believe they did not let America choose the winner because it would have been Dan and they know it. Antonio did a great job josting, but that is NOT what the show is about. That fireplace mantel, the one small couch with a family with a small child, and nothing was done to the little boys room except putting stars on the wall – no storage for his toys. I am very disappointed and wish Dan all the best with his career!
I think you may be right, Amy, about the fury of the fans. I do think Antonio was picked based on his personality rather than on his work. I really wanted Dan to win and yes, he does remind me of some of the other designers on HGTV, but that's why I watch! My favorite solution would be for both Antonio and Dan to get their own show — both could be interesting (although, I think I would get a lot more useful information from Dan).
Fortunately, we can still, supposedly, vote for Dan to have his own online show; however, I see the real-time results are now being blocked so I guess that's being rigged, too!
You hit the nail on the head! This was the most unfair competition ever. Both Lonni and Dan were cheated out of what should have been theirs. Antonio is NOT a designer; he is a carpenter (maybe). I hate his personality and this design. I will not watch his show and may never watch future Design Star programs. Why would they do this?
I don’t think Antonio is a better designer than Dan. However, I lost all respect for Dan during the show after he threw several folks under the bus. As for Lonni, she never should have been in the top three anyway. She didn’t even complete the White Room. How was she able to remain after that? Also, don’t forget it was Antonio who came to her rescue…
Dan's dishonesty and inability to accept responsibility for his own actions during the yard makeover should have sent him home. That debacle with being $5,600 over budget was a real failure and he was so cavalier when he was addressing being $600 over budget. He simply stated it was a little over budget but that is OK. Clearly hasn't worked with many clients. If homeowners bust their own budgets, that is one thing but designers can't be cavalier about overspending someone else's money.
Antonio hit it out of the park and without any of the boo boos Dan had throughout the contest. Dan was also wishy-washy and always picked the losing position during the competition. But it didn't take him long to throw his compadres under the bus, as you mention, whenever the judges pointed out the error of the decision. He laid it off on the others team members then.
Antonio was never a part of a team that didn't complete an assignment. He brings the job in and under budget.
Antonio and Dan picked out the $10,000 pergola. They were given an estimate of $10,000 in the store, with exact price to be given on site. Antonio was OK with the $10,000 estimate.
When Lonni and Torie returned and found out the price, they all returned to the store and cancelled the $10,000 pergola and ordered a $5,500 one. Even after they exchanged the pergola they were $5,000 oever budget. Each person was responsible, either individually or in groups, for shopping for items. Lonni did not go over budget. Dan took responsiblity for the $500 budget overage for the pergola, but did not go over on anything else. Torie shopped for furniture, and Antonio shopped for fencing and concrete. Both went over budget and were responsible for the $4,500 budget overage not related to the pergola. Neither took responsibilty, and tried to make it look like it was all related to Dan and the pergola.
Being an a——- is not leadership. He is not well spoken & rude. Also he was done w/ the white room, then he knew cameras were rolling, coming over to help to show compassion ick.
I can't even get a chance to post my comment. Something keeps editing the posts. There is a editing scam going on, and starts with the editing of the show. Antonio was a favorite of the judges, that was obvious just in their facial expressions when the made their comments. He is talented, but this was a staged platform for his show. He is too much reality show host. The producers better research the demographic groups that are watching HGTV . I am all in favor of NO MORE DESIGN STAR – it has been a farce for the last 3 years!
"…this was a staged platform for his show." Wow, I think you hit the nail on the head. It's so obvious, and I'm really bummed about it. I bought into it being a genuine contest, but I guess I was naive and gullible because the results demonstrate it.
Haha, right on sister!! I'm furious about being ripped off by HGTV. I hope they continue to get inundated with hate mail. I for one, will never watch again …..unless we receive an apology from HGTV. AND the judges.
Yes, first on the list apologize to Tashica and then get rid of Vern Yip!!!
Get a life for goodness sakes. A wish that someone get "inundated with hate mail" is pretty sad.
And get over yourself. Why would the network owe you an apology.
Grow up and be real. The spoiled tantrums would be boring to your therapist and they are tanamont to insanity to the rest of the world that watches HGTV.
Buy your own network if you want apologies. Otherwise the rest of the viewers get to express input that is grownup and realistic.
Antonio won so you ought to get over it and stop wishing bad deeds on others. "What goes around, comes around" and you had better change your ways or be ducking.
I for one am not wishing Antonio ill will. I just think that he is a bully (that we have seen time and time again) and not a team player. His "Yo! Whassup" attitude is intollerable and if I want to see someone in messy clothes and tatoos, I'll go to the local bar.
I have seen crap in my time… but this HGTV sham takes the cake.
Antonio, your show has been cancelled.
AmyA – You may be "running on emotion," but your point is well taken. I viewed the blog before it went down. I don't have stats, so won't quote %'s, but it seemed the vast majority was upset at the outcome. No question; Dan was far and away the best designer; Antonio bills himself as a set designer, and that's what his stuff looks like — TV sets, not rooms in which people can live. Colors and decor are completely uninspired, coarse, and often off-point. His demeanor is gruff, abrasive, rude, arrogant, and he has no concept of team playing. It seems inconceivable that three incredible designer-judges could have seen things this way. Of course, I won't say i'll never watch HGTV again, but this has permanently tarnished the network's credibility.
"Antonio bills himself as a set designer, and that's what his stuff looks like — TV sets,…"
Hello. This is a television show and David B and the other judges repeatedly reminded them that they were designing for television and the colors were important.
Again, the medium is television
Maybe where you live, but those families don't live in the Brady Bunch house. That's the disconnect; people have to live. The mother who stretched out in the bedroom Dan designed for her said it all . . . "I'm home."
But Antonio will be designing rooms in people's homes, and they will have to live in them. The rooms will have to be functional first, and popping for the TV cameras comes second.
98% of viewer's? LOL you for real?, 3000 comments not all one sided maybe 60 to 70% at most, you know the viewers were in the millions so take 2900 for your claim out of 900,0000 views and what percent do we have? 0.3% Wow your right! that matches 98% !!!!
Come on people your running on emotions and not logic!
HAHA, your absolutely right!! People are freakin out about this and forgetting logic!
The show is called Design Star, not Design Host. Dan is the superior designer and was cheated out of a show that millions would have watched for his clever, innovative and fresh designs. I hope the STYLE NETWORK IS SMART ENOUGH TO SCOOP DAN UP!!!
THANKS ALOT HGTV!!! I couldn't be home in time to watch so I taped it. When I came home and turned on the tv, it was on HGTV and GUESS WHAT, they had a commercial on, with Antonio saying he just won Design Star and blah blah blah……I didn't even watch the show. THANKS HGTV FOR RUINING THE ENDING FOR ME!!!!! I'm getting sick of the UNREALISTIC CHALLENGES! I NEVER feel we really get to see what a designer is REALLY all about. The same thing with the FOOD Network challenges. I didn't vote for a fav designer, who cares!!!!!!!!
I totally agree. If they were wanting the BEST designer, they chose wrong. I feel like they covered for Antonio the whole time. They obviously had him picked regardless of the design.
Totally agree!! I feel used and abused…wasted my time watching.
Dan was definitely the better designer; however, he is a lot like David Bromstad (and I certainly mean that as a compliment). Antonio had some good ideas, could pull them off with his carpentery skills but I thought he was an overbearing bully. Also will someone tell Gen to stop gushing over the bad boys, she was drooling over Antonio from the first episode just like she does/did with the men on Dear Gen and Trading Spaces.
Amy, I agree with you that the network probably closed commenting here based on viewer outrage. Their PR managers must not be any smarter than the producers who forced the selection of Antonio. Bad decisions all around. I would like to encourage everyone to go vote 10 times a day for Dan until they close that as well. Ultimately the network only cares about ratings and surly they will pay attention to viewer feedback via their own online systems. Now they're presumably just in "damage control" mode. This is all very sad (for Dan especially) and those of us who watch the show for the DESIGN.
I totally agree. Dan was far superior on his designs. He was cheated and they picked Antonio because he is "different." Why did they not just strat with "different" people if that is the only reason to pick one. I am very disappointedin HGTV!
I absolutely agree. I don't feel he should have even been in the final 2! Candace played up his gangster voice, like it was so cute—not only did he sound like a thug, but he looks like one too! Big mistake in not choosing Dan. And why did the viewers not get to vote for the winner as in the past? sure sounds fishy to me.
I agree. If I wanted to see someone who looks like a rock star wanna be I would have tuned into MTV. Antonio is not easy to look at and I am sure you are looking for a new twist but the reason I watch HGTV is for profesional look in decorating as well as the designer. Bad choice this time, you just lost me as a loyal viewer .
I completely agree. Fan votes meant nothing.
AmyA….right on you are! We will not be watching 1 minute of Antonio the tatoo man. What about presentation….he failed on this with the designs on his body.
i agree totally!- this had to be rigged! the judges kept antonio in the running simply because hes got an edge- but he DOES NOT HAVE DESIGN!!! its great to have new "edgy" hosts- but shouldnt they have talent also??? antonio- your a nice guy- but you are no design star. shame on the judges for choosing him! maybe this is why america didnt get a vote! again you are right- it was rigged!!
I have to agree that it seems Antonio was their guy from the start. What a shame, as Dan's house is so beautiful and creative and well planned. I was shocked that his home didn't win. I would not have wanted my house to be like Antonios. And I would not be inclined to watch Antonios' show either, so I guess I'm not their targeted audience. They should have justs given Antonio his own show and had a real contest. I had a bad feeling when they were down to three and kept Antonio. I won't watch another season where the winner is pre-ordained.
I am convinced that the Network was going for an entirely new direction with the HOST this season and this was the overwhelming consideration in the end. They were seeking an "entertainment" factor (read personality) OVER the talent factor. The "entertainment" factor they will end up with is not something I will want to watch. A bit rough coupled by poor grammar and way too much exposed body art! I hope the network realizes that we the viewers primarily want excellent design not to be "entertained' by a "less-than" designer. Why go for the mediocre when you can have the best? Perhaps the Network will rethink their decision and offer Dan a substantial roll in another show or a series of "Specials" in the coming years.
I agree with AmyA. The contest was rigged. Maybe the next contest will be more fair. I am disappointed with HGTV because I thought they would be more honest.
I totally agree. Send him to HR and hire him, but don't call him a DesignStar. He seemed to have minor flaws in each of his designs, but I felt like the judges already knew who they wanted right from the beginning. Did anyone notice that Antonio took out a closet and a cut down the dual sinks to one in the master bedroom on this last challenge?? He made the home worse! Dan is the only who consistently put his rooms completely together. Honestly, I will watch Antonio b/c he is different, but I still would not call him a DesignStar.
Tottaly Agree!
I totally agree with Amy A. The show was rigged from the start. I will not watch the big mouth tattoed Italian because he is not a designer, and for Candice and Vern to pick him as one is so in your face. Idon't care about Jenevieve She is no designer either. What happened to letting the audience vote??
You could tell it was fixed since his show starts next week. It took daivd Bromstad over 6 months to get his show on the TV. I guess Antonio is a relative maby. Oh well – I wo't watch. Phyllis
You obviously didn't watch the show very closely. Why act like a spoiled child?
AmyA, I agree completely. Ridiculous choice to have chosen Antonio over Dan, or over Lonni. I have nothing personally against Antonio–his delivery style is immature and does nothing for me–but the fact that he is hack as a designer with no color sense that makes this a bad choice. Dan (or Lonni) will still get his/her own show because of the viewers voting and will go the distance because they are both very talented designers who have great taste and will only improve with time. Antonio show, on the other hand will have a very short life and will be cancelled after one season, if the viewers have anything to say for it.
I agree, the public should have been able to vote, Dan would have won!
Yep, I hust checked in and was shocked (not really to see that the blog was pulled. It doesn't take an idiot to get why. Just like you said, the results smelled like fish. It just was not right. HGTV knows this. Antonio's picture with all the negative comments just wasn't the truth they wanted to be reminded of.
AMEN!!!!! Antonio lost me when he refused to listen to the client about what color she wanted. SUCH A SNOB!! I WILL NOT BE WATCHING HIS SHOW. Dan should have won. I ALSO HAVE DECIDED I DO NOT CARE ANYMORE FOR VERN, CANDICE AND THE OTHER ONE. IT WAS RIGGED!!!!!
Exactly! Where is Jen's show???? Why does Antonio get an immediate show???? I cannot stand watching someone with tatoos that cover ever part of his body that we will see on TV. Gross! I want to see Jen's show! This season of Design Show was so rigged.
totally agree….wasnt kim myles selected too because she was different? well guess where that show is going. i am so not watching this show ever…i have a feeling they have an idea for a show and just needed to find someone to host it. in that case, they should have held a hosting contest…totally done with this bogus show
"dirty no-talent carpenter"… I must refrain from wording this how I want to. Lets see you build something. Sounds like you have a total lack of respect for folks that can actually build something. As to giving Antonio a show, looks like they did. Ohhh, once again I am having to bite my tongue.
I bet you watch Antonio's show though. Because it is going to be lots of fun. The freaks are going to start crawling in from under the baseboards now.
agree 100%, no 1000%….there isn't a bigger HGTV fan than me and I won't be watching Antonia…I want to watch someone who knows MORE than me, not someone feeling his way around…I can do that on my own!
98%?? Where did you get your numbers? Are you privy to the webstats that usually only administrators have access to? Don't quote facts unless you can back your words.
I agree! And what has happened to Jen, last year's winner? How come Antonio's show gets to premier first??? This season was "rigged". Not interested in looking at all the tatoos! So glad that Dan is getting the online show! He should have won Design Star!
Dan's designs were stellar. They were up there with Candice Olson's with creativity and originality. It was pretty obvious that HGTV wanted Antonio to have a show, as lack of any negativity towards him throughout the filming was very obvious. He reminds me of Guy on the Food network show, "Guy Bites". My husband liked him, unfortunately, he is not the one who watches HGTV.
Big disappointment HGTV. I was really looking forward to watching the amazing designs Dan would have on his show. Antonio just doesn't have that pull.
I am totally in your favour and do not understand how Antonio won…Dan was most definitely the best!! I think the judges had Antonio in mind from the start and it was definitely not a fair competition…so what can I say other than I will not be watching Antonio remodel his own house!!
OMG! You are SO the money girlfriend!
Dan's designs for the past 2 shows, as well as for the white room challenge were VASTLY superior to Antonio's. Dan's mirrored doors above the fireplace were brilliant. The child's room was also exceptional — Dan did what Jason tried to do with the teenage girls's room (sophisticated but feminine), except Dan pulled it off fantastically, from the couch, to the light fixture with the black ribbon, to the color palette. Antonio's colors were "OUCH" – from the green in the master bedroom to the purple on last week's challenge. Antonio's personality is different than that of other hosts on HGTV (rude, arrogant, not a team player, etc.) BUT so was Robb in a prior season and they ultimately eliminated him (correctly) after keeping him around for a few episodes to generate drama. If this were a personality contest, it should not be called "Design Start" — the name misleadingly suggests the winner is based on DESIGN! HGTV, I'm very disappointed that the best designer, DAN, did not win.
I agree….the judges wanted Antonio to win from the very first episode with the stupid pink ducks.Seriously, tell me Candice or Vern would actually EVER do something that stupid!
In many episodes, Antonio was rude, and clearly not a team player when he was supposed to be.His makeover on the last challenge was pathetic.I'll bet the homeowners are repainting right now!!
I agree with you 100%. I KNEW they were going to pick him (the girl from Divine Design gushed waaaay tooooo much). Dan's work was superior – Antonio's rooms were junky and plain whereas Dan's were lush and sophisticated. It was a setup.
I agree, Dan totally rocked and was completely robbed!! I was so disappointed to see Antonio win and I won't watch his shows at all! His design is weak and ugly. The paint was hideous!!
I thought Dan was going to win and I just kept saying please don't giggle!! That was the only thing I thought that would keep him from winning. It was rigged and unfair!
I absolutely agree. If America had voted, Dan would have been the winner. It should have been about design, not so-called personality. It is very unlikely I ever want to see Antonio's face again, but then HGTV has been making plenty of miserable programming decisions. DIY and FLN have been getting more and more of my viewing!
Me too!
You are absolutely right – change to a different channel.
I am very disa ppointed in the 3 judges. I expected a lot more from all 3 of them. They were not judiging design but some off the wall jerk who thinks he can host a design show. His hosting talents are gross and borish. Good luck HGTV as this is not a show I will be watching. Just like I can't stand the "Property Store" with the bitchy blond who thinks she is such a hot realator.
Amen! Who is making the programing decisions at HGTV? Whoever it is should be fired!
I've been saying this for two years. 2 1/2 hours of home buying. Who's buying right now? Give people shows on HOW to sell these homes if they get a chance. The Property Store is offensive. I talked with friends today and we all want to know what is going on with the programming at HGTV. Sure isn't the quality is was 10 or even 5 years ago. That's before they even decided to give us Antonio!
"Sure isn't the quality is was 10 or even 5 years ago….."
Ten years ago we were still watching the Old Yankee Carpenter and shows of that quality. Design on a Dime and Decorating Cents were the highest level of entertainment. Then came Designed to Sell and the network just kept getting better and better. Debbie Travis brought a lot to this network including Divine Design and other Canadian programming.
HGTV has come a long way since I started watching in 1999 so I take acception to your inaccurate comment suggesting that HGTV was better 5 or 10 years ago. They keep expanding and reaching out to more viewers and making their programing visually more modern and their designers more diversified.
The shows are not intended to appeal to every viewer so if Antonio's show doesn't appeal to you don't watch but it isn't necessary to use dishonesty to justify your decision.
It is bogus.
I agree. I watched that show last week with that Tatiana and yes, she comes across as so self-indulgent and self-absorbed, the whole episode turned me off. Even her clients were a turn off, but there must be an audience who likes that sort of thing. Just look at some of the reality shows on TV, somebody watches them. I can only assume that HGTV is going after this demographic.
Agree about the Property Shop. I've never watched it; just the commercials turned me off so I never bothered to watch.
I concur..!!
I agree and also think Dan should have won. HGTV is looking for edgy and I guess they THINK they found it in Antonio. BTW, they kept saying this was the 4th season for Design Star. Who were the three previous winner…I remember David and Kim Myles, who was the 3rd season winner?
Jennifer Bertrand was the Season 3 winner. She has a new show called "Paint Over."
I've only seen the show air once. I couldn't figure out what happened to her.
I totally agree with you. I was agast that Antonio won. I would never be interested in anything he "designs" ; I would never watch his show. Dan was the one who should have won. I am still in shock!
I agree with you, Dan should have been the winner, his designs blew me away! This was the first season I have watched Design Star and am very disappointed at the outcome. Don't know if I would watch it again, I don't feel like the best person won. Dan is a team player and had some amazing designs, I tuned in each week just to see what he would do…truth be told watching Antonio makes me cringe the only room he did that I even remotely liked was the kids dinosaur room. Dan's white room challenge was well thought out, inventive and beautiful as well as many of his other designs…I was looking forward to seeing more of his unique talents and am so dismayed the judges did not choose him, makes me rethink watching their programs as well. I realize they were looking for something different, it's just a shame that a true talent did not get his opportunity to shine.
omg…youre so right… antonio is such a jerk and dan totally deserved to win he always put in the most effort and really tried…antonio just threw something out there and hoped he got it right(for example in the white room challenge)… i will definitely not be watching antonios show
Joan, I agree! Antonio is a little old to always start his "Show" with "What's up…?" I don't think his designs were outstanding at all, and his personality will wear on me after a few episodes. David Bromstad is so good at his job partly because of his charm and graciousness. I don't love everything he does, but I do love watching him interact with crew and clients.
So what will they call Antonio's show? "Badda Bling, Badda Boom"?
I am hoping that they call it…Cancelled!
I agree!!!!!
Hey Marielle thats great I also hope they call it ….CANCELLED!!!!
I so agree with you! Totally foul play on HGTV's part.
Pottery Barn is great but frankly — anyone can copy a page from a magazine. A true design expert thinks outside the box. You loved the mirrored doors above the fireplace (so did I) BUT the tv was place too high as was the bedroom tv — Talk about a kink in your neck. These are things a true designer thinks about before placing and maybe the two contestants needed more time — we no longer need to hide the sleek tv's. Antonio had a problem with accessorizing, scale and furniture placement — he is not a designer so he gets a pass. These are a few of the flaws from my stand point. They both had problems. Give Antonio a chance… I'm sure Dan has a great career ahead of him.
RIGHT ON!! YOU NAILED IT. Lonni's delivery, her designs were ones I would watch. Antonio, If he showed up at my home to design I would slam the door. He can't even shave or dress him self, Let along speak! Bad choice judges!
But this is not about you and Antonio won't be showing up at your door so you won't be slamming it in his face. Just change the station and you will be fine.
Tip: One who wries as poorly as you ought not to pick on anyone else's speaking abilities.
Just sayin…..
Tip: Before one criticizes another's writing style, one should learn the difference between "exception" and "acception".
Just sayin…
And in case you need some help figuring out what I'm talking about, I'm referring to your reply to Sam above.
Ouch. I had that coming.
"Tip: One who wries as poorly as you ought not to pick on anyone else's speaking abilities."
What's a "wries"?
Oops. That should be "writes"
Thanks for pointing out my typo.
OMG I thought I was the only one who felt that way!!!!
I agree with all those who were disappointed, if not appalled, by the result. I too feel like they wanted Antonio to win from the beginning – thought his show would add a dimension to the network, I guess. I really did not like what he did with the family's house, except for the kitchen. If that had been my house, I would have had trouble acting excited. And I did kind of think they were "acting" too. Previous episodes showed that Antonio did not take responsibility for any failures in the projects. (It was he who put the idea of $10K for the gazebo in Dan's mind, as the replay surely showed.) Dan's final project was outstanding – plus he always gives design tips during his hosting. Antonio says "Here's the stove", "Here's the bed", etc. I cannot imagine watching a whole show of his, unless he becomes the carpenter on someone else's show. My husband feels the same. Perhaps it is time to retire "Design Star" if this is the best they can do.
I'm so glad you brought that up about the gazebo. Antonio completely set up Dan and Tori and then wasn't honest enough to confess. He's the worst kind of competitor. This wasn't Survivor! This was about integrity and design talent. Or so I thought.
You want the truth, you can't handle the truth!
Dan in his own words, Dan and Torrie were responsible http://www.katu.com/amnw/segments/59047302.html I'm sick and tired of this railroading of Antonio on something he did not do!
Hey Mancave, take the blinders off, dude.
You'll see that ickle Antonio was the brown haired mustachiod bearded tattooed grungy guy right next to Dan in the pergola store, having made their selections and wanting the final total and not just the estimate. Episode 7, 11 minutes in.
Yes, Torie and Dan – and the others – corrected the budgetary mistake and the pergola was scaled way back from what the two men had originally ordered. Antonio accepted no responsibility for that original order. Dan accepted full responsibility for it. Two men shopped, one man owned up to it.
Yes, what we see is a $5000 pergola. The judges don't like it and they don't feel it reflects a $10000 high end product. They would be correct because we know it wasn't that over budget.
Flash forward to the green room…Torie's not accepting responsibility, is she? Despite that article, she's very clearly voicing the fact that she's not taking the blame. Nor would Antonio.
Antonio's statement was "good, then the girls will be there tomorrow and we can all discuss it." after Dan said the guy would be coming in the morning to measure etc.
It is you that can't deal with the facts. You dispute Dan's own words and think you have any integrity.
I agree with you 100%. I really suprised that Dan did not win. He is really talented. I think Dan skills much better than YIp. I won't watch the HGTV any program.
I absolutely agree with you. Dan's designs were just great. I could see myself living with his designs. But Antonio's I feel would get old very fast. That color green he used in the bedroon last not was horrible I would need to wear sunglassed. Very disappointed in the juding this year.
I completely agree, Antonio's layout, scale and color picks were way off. No wonder the judges chose
this year! I'm an artist and designer and almost fell off the couch when Antonio's name was called.
I'm sure his show will be fun and have good ideas but what a waste of a total star in not picking Dan.
The best aspects of what Antonio did was the carved cabinet over the fire place but because the tone of paint of his color choice there was no contrast therefore no POP. Did any of this have anything to do with last years winner Jen? Has anyone else noticed her show has just been aired and has recieved no advertising at all. Your fans are not children if there was a problem the truth would have been nice. It took 12 month's to air Jen's show and Antonio's will be ready to start next week, WOW. I suspect that
Jen's show will be cancelled with no fanfare very quickly, she is just not getting a fair shot. The same goes for Dan. If TLC was smart they scoop him us for a show right now.
so right so right so very disappointed with HGTV
I like Antonio personally and some of his ideas are good. No problem with his having made it to the final two, but the show is not called "new to the network 'Personality Star'." Dan was CLEARLY the "design star." I was SO EXCITED to hear at the season open that Candice, Vern, and Genevieve were supposed to have been making the final decision (as opposed to the American public), but ultimately some producer or group of producers clearly chose Antonio based on their conceptions of ratings. I regularly watch Color Splash. David is talented. Myles of Style and Paint Over (most boring and frankly "stoopid" title EVER) are lame. Again no issues with the ladies' personalities. They come across as very nice people. And, Jennifer produces some good ideas too once and a while. However, in those cases as well, the lesser talents won the seasons. The innovative, out-of-the-box thing would have been for HGTV to give BOTH Antonio and Dan their own shows. I intend to follow Dan's career no matter where he ends up (short of stalking him). I'll give Antonio's show a chance too, but I'll never watch it without feeling distaste for Candice, Vern, and Genevieve's spineless complicity in the results.
It was obvious to me that the fix was in for Antonio to win from the very beginning. Candace was giggling like a school girl every time Antonio opened his mouth. She thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Every negative comment made about Antonio by Vern or Genevieve was shot down by Candace. She was determined to declare Antonio the winner come hell or green walls. She was clearly enjoying her little power trip. Dan was clearly the best designer of the bunch!
I agree with you 100%. I am very disappointed in the winner. He has no talent. Dan was right on the money with each design. The judges could not find anything wrong at all to comment on. Now both of Antonio's challenges the past 2 weeks were very lacking & the judges commented ojn such, yet he won. That is beyond comprehension. I will not watch him. His design and personality do not keep up with HGTV's standards. Bottom line is that most people don't want that stuff in their home & don't want to watch someone else get it either. Especially from someone who is rude and arrogant. As far as the over budget challenge it was dan who said he 5000, Antonio in the car told him he thought it was 10,000. That's where Dan started it from. What a mistake. Sad for the show. Edgy is fine, but this guy is way out.
I completely agree. I was so angry that I wasted my time. This show has nothing to do with design, only personality, and not a great one at that. I will not be watching HGTV for a long time. I am so disappointed at this sad display. I refuse to contribute to the madness.
Dan's designs were vastly superior to Antonio's. How could they do this to him? Dan will be successful regardless of this set back – but it was so unfair of them to not give him the first place that he earned and deserves.
You hit the nail on the head. Dan was totally ripped off, a FAR superior designer and good camera presence. Antonio seems to have a humble side but I'd be humble too if I could design whatever I wanted and know I was getting a show anyway.
Agreed. You stated it well. Dan is a designer; Antonio is not.
I agree Dan's Last two rooms were superior to Antonio's Rooms. I' m disappointed with the judges
choice. Dan is a stronger designer than Antonio
you're so on! the show was a disappointment indeed. Dan was brilliant, creative, out of the box,and thoughtful at nearly every turn. Antonio is a personality, but more or less a carpenter, and there's nothing wrong with that, it's just that he's not a designer, period.
I am so happy others have my same thoughts. I am almost ready to stop watching HGTV over this one. What happened to the viewers picking the winner? Dan was a true Design Star and I would move right into the rooms he designed. Antonio was only selected for ratings — and you won't get mine. He has bad color choices, bad design choices and a bad attitude. Didn't the judges see his rooms on the final show? That TV cabinet in the living room was terrible — it was missing slats on the front and the colors were out of control. Would you see that on Devine Design??? I think not!
I agree whole heartedly. Antonio's designs were unattractive. I do think he has a lot of on-screen charisma but this is a design show and the best designer did not win.
Agreed! Antonio put 4*6 photos on a newly built wall for the bathroom. That's a hugh blank wall, no sane designer would put such a small artwork on the big wall.
The kid's room was super pathetic…. IT's so blank. You don't need a designer to pull that off.
The TV cabinet, not sure what that was… so so ugly.
No way should Antonio have won this! He doesn't seem to get along with others and always needs to be in charge. He clearly states he doesn't have any formal design training and it shows! HGTV's judges really dropped the ball naming him the winner. I, for one, will not be watching his show. His whole attitude, demeanor, and appearance rub me the wrong way. I really hope that Dan wins the online voting, but wonder about it because they've closed off the results for awhile and who can say what results they are skewing in the meantime? There's no accountablility!
I completely agree with you.
I am very disappointed that Dan didn't win. His designs for the home were just great. Antonio was ok,
his designs are just too funky for my taste. His personality will be a breath of something new and
interesting I am sure, however it is a shame they didn;t choose them both one for us regular people
and one for people with the funky.
Antonio's personality is different than that of other hosts on HGTV — rude, arrogant, not a team player — BUT so was Robb in a prior season and they ultimately eliminated him (correctly) after keeping him around for a few episodes to generate drama. If this were a personality contest, it should not be called "Design Start" — the name misleadingly suggests the winner is based on DESIGN! HGTV, I'm very disappointed that the best designer, DAN, did not win.
I was screaming and cheering in my house last night that my entire family thought I was going mad. I am so happy for Antonio, I thought he deserved it and my reasoning is simple, he's different, he's funny, and he makes me laugh and cry at the same time, how awesome is that! There is just something about him that just makes you feel cushy inside and i believe thats what won the hearts of the judges especially the women ( you could see it in both Candice and Genevieve). Thanks HGTV for someone new and fresh, you really needed it. Dan I think you are a very good designer and I do wish you all the best but Antonio had the wow factor, that was key and I am so proud of the Judges. Love ya Antonio.
HE IS DIFFERENT, BUT THIS IS A design COMPETITION, NOT A PERSONALITY ONE! DAN WAS THE BEST, AND THE JUDGES KNEW IT.
I just dont understand why we even had design challenges if the decision was based on personality. The show is called "design star" for a reason…Dan was the better designer. Thats why people are upset.
But, it's a DESIGN show, not a personality show.
My daughter and I were both cheering last night, too, Diana! It was wild! I'm glad Antonio won…HGTV needed a breath of fresh air.
Sorry but Antonio struck me as a very rude bully. In all the team challenges he behaved like a total jerk. I do think he has some talent, but I will definately not watch him.
Diana if you're looking for personality on a design show as a priority your watching DESIGN SHOWS for the wrong reason. I am currently remodeling my home and I watch these shows for inspiration — NOT personality of which Antonio has none. As far as his designs they suck just as much as his personality. If I wanted to watch a neanderthal try to design a room I'd rather read Nation Geographic or watch the History channel and watch them move rocks around a cave which is about all Antonio can do.
Same thing here Diana!! A bunch of my friends and I started celebrating…Dan wasn't bad but Antonio is the real deal!!!!
If Antonio is so talented as a designer, why hasn't he designed his own house already? How many times has he tried to do it, and failed?
he flips houses and sells them so he's constantly moving…
To get away for his "creations!"
Yeah right, I saw how cushy he was with his teamates he was working with. A rude person with construction/staging talent is what he is. I opt OUT! The should have just given him a show and kept him out of the design show.
Yes, he is funny and different, but he did not deserve to win. You said he had the WOW factor, wow only in wow that he was allowed to continue. His designs were just plain junk and it seems HGTV is hearing about how upset America is over this contest. There is no doubt, Dan should have won, and we should be awaiting his next show. The judges, especially Vern Yip should speak out publicly about how they came to there determination.
Diana,
I guess you like a chauvinistic pig, did you not hear Antonio talk about the women?? This first show he was asking about Genevieve-was she married? ? "I hope not " he said she was HOT!!! someone told him she had just had a baby. He also commented about Kathy Griffin, walking up to her house he made another piggish comment, hoping she did not have anybody in her life??? I'd be afraid to be a women around him. He was a carpenter not a designer!!!!! they probably bleeped out all of his other piggish comments!!!! I'd stay away from him!!! HGTV I'm dissapointed.
I hear you sister! He disgusting and spits when he talks….. Creep! He's ghetto, just like his design talent. I wonder if HGTV will only give him clients who are uneducated wannabe gangsters like him. HIs "about me" says it all….. he's trash. Seeing clips from his upcoming first episode only confirms the fact he should not have won and shame on HGTV for assuming their viewers don't know what is and is not good design by giving him the win!
Your ugly comments actually tell us all more about yourself than Antonio and your "gangster" comments are really dispicable since he is an Italian American.
Your capacity for rude, filthy comments is really sad.
Antonio has a lot more class than you are exhibiting in this forum.
so rude..nobody's stopping you from praising Dan but don't spread slander about Antonio. Only uneducated people can stoop to this level..
WOW people say its not a whine fest yet this post is negative 27
and this:
"If I wanted to watch a neanderthal try to design a room I'd rather read Nation Geographic or watch the History channel and watch them move rocks around a cave which is about all Antonio can do"
I have been challenged where's the ugly whining? read the above quote for a sample.
Uncalled for and bad form really.
.
There is more mock outrage and whining than anything else.
I don't wish Antonio any ill will. But Ihis designs are quite lacking in creativity and ways to solve real problems. I am an HGTV fan, except I don't think Antonio designs the type of room I want to copy. Brondstadt and Dan are similar. They are both excellent designers. Face it HGTV, that is why we watch your shows. Good thing is when Antonio is on, the tv will be off in our house, and I will be working on my own rooms, dreaming of Dan's wonderful designs we will never get to see. Hope everyone who is complaining does the same thing. Advertisers will eventually catch on and maybe make the suggestion to bring Dan on board. One can always hope.
But the three judges are not going to give him good ratings! They are employed by HGTV. The people seem to be voting on this site, and it doesn't seem to be for Antonio.
I completely agree… I am just so sorry so many of the Dan fans are so ugly and hateful about the win. In past season I would not have been so angry and vicious about the other person winning who was not my pick. What's up with these mean people? They have a choice: don't watch. No one cares how mad they are! I am happy you wrote you fine comment. Ha! we share a last name!
the reason there are 3000 comments is because people are outraged and disappointed that the best designer (DAN) did not win!
I agree. Let's flood them again with our opinion!!! Will not watch Antonio and feel sorry that he feels he is a good designer. He really has good capentry skills, but that does not make him a designer. That poor Starr family had a great home before he came. Wonder what they have done to make their house functional again!
THAT'S WHAT I PLAN ON DOING! KIM, JENNIFER AND NOW ANTONIO ARE BAD AND I HAVE NOT AND WILL NOT WATCH THEIR SHOWS. I'M JUST ONE PERSON, BUT WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?!
You can't say he was the best designer!! That is only your opinion, your opinion doesn't count!!
I can say antonio is NOT a designer. Which is more than just my opinion, it's my professional opinion.
and since this blog is to post our opinion, then I guess it does count.
OUR OPINION DOES COUNT!! Haven't you ever heard of LOW RATINGS from viewers as the reason for a show being canceled? It's only a matter of time–a very short time–before the Antonio Project gets canceled. Clearly you'll be the only one watching his show—HOW SAD!!
OMG!!! Grow up!! Who freakin cares??? Your getting your self so worked up over a show that none of us have control over!! The only people that care about your opinion, or any of these posts for that matter, are the few hundred that are reading them right now. The rest of the world doesn't even know you exist. It's sad that your getting so offended! Do you really think you opinion counts with a national televised show?? That your opinion is so important that it's getting documented? It's a reality tv show!!! HGTV may want you to think that but I highly doubt our votes are the defining factor to who wins.
Isn't the Nielson still the only rating system? If so, how do you plan to have your displeasure recorded and transmitted to the network?
totally agree with you. Dan IS the best. Antonioe is a bully. I disliked him from the moments in the green room when he kept telling Jason "you're next, you're leaving." I have NO intention of watching his show. Management hired him, they can watch him and enjoy his "refreshing attitude."
HGTV put out a survey last week asking the fans to vote on which room we liked the best. Antonioe scored less than 20% with Kathy Griffin's office!!! How does this qualify him for the job? I am just disgusted. (loved the comment on the pink geese.)
That survey disappeared pretty fast too!
Now look at the numbers for these rooms. Dan 4.5 Antonio 2.2. Doesn't that tell you something?
Yes, it does. The servers should be programmed so that only one response can be accepted from each MAC number on a machine. Not even good enough to use IP numbers. Lots of multiple voting
So Dan's fans are engaging in repetitive voting and posting while Antonio's are not? Please. If Antonio had more than a handful of fans, they could do the same thing. Fact is, multiple voting by Antonio's smattering of fans would not be sufficient because there aren't enough of them to outweigh the overwhelming majority of viewers who thought DAN should have been the next Design Star!
I agree. Sorry judges, but you got it wrong and I for one will not be turning in to Antonio's new show. I had enough of him after three episodes of "Design Star". Overall, Dan did the best design of all the challenges and clearly was the best designer from beginning to end.
exactly right joanovarq
I totally agree!
I think there are many comments coming from the people who wanted Dan to win. There is more urgency to write in if you are upset than if you are content with the decision. I can bet there are many happy and content viewers who are not writing in. Glad Antonio won!!!
Exactly. If those comments were somehow deleted as a trick to silence us, or to make Antonio's victory seem more deserved (as if), then I'm very disappointed.
I agree 100% Dan's was far better than Mr Yo.
I totally agree I am sure his show will not last more than the 1 season they have to give him. I will not watch
I am hoping that the people that were unhappy with the Design Star winning decision put their money where their mouth is, don't watch Antonio's show, contact advertisers by email, and don't click on any Antonio show website material. Actions speak louder than words!! Dan should be given his own show because he had the superior creative designs.
You are so right joanovarq. I am also outraged that the judges would pick Antonio over Dan. I will never watch a show that he hosts. He's a bully, as said by many, and not a team player. He himself admitted that he never went to design school, but was so how full of talent because he came from an "artsy" family. Give me a break! His designs were awful. Good luck to HGTV, with Antonio as the newest disaster waiting to happen.
Give you a break come on now, Little Dan had several big mistakes. I got it let him decorate your room and go over budget i bet I would see you on a court tv show crying then too
I think people are disappointed that Dan (or Lonni) didn't win but I think they are more disappointed that the competition seemed to be predetermined. Perhaps HGTV executives think that their viewers are stupid and won't notice that the judges were skewed in Antonio's favor. Just as the show was edited to show what they wanted it to show, are the posts now being 'edited' to show that viewers are pleased with the coronation of Antonio? I'm sure Antonio is talented but it was quite apparent that he is a bully and didn't play well with others. Look at the tape from the final show. He tried to initiate a group hug with his carpenters and workers and they all just stood there unresponsive.
If HGTV wanted edgy, they should have created a show for Todd Davis who lost to Kim Myles in Season Two. Talk about creative. That guy came up with ideas that were unique.
I think you have a good point when it comes to this comment, "If HGTV wanted edgy, they should have created a show for Todd Davis who lost to Kim Myles in Season Two. Talk about creative. That guy came up with ideas that were unique."
So answer this where was Dans unique ideals, outside of the White room I didnt see it, to be honest I didnt really see a good selection to pick from. Many times I felt it should have been scraped new contestants found and start all over. As for Lonnie, come on she couldnt finish anything she started. As for the bully title you have it wrong, I didnt see Dan after finishing the white room helping Lonnie to finish her room which could have cost him winning. I did see Antinio, and so what to everyone Dan didnt win, so what why are you mad at Antinio for winning he was true to himself and didnt seem to change as many others did as the show went on.
Todd is a better skydiver than designer. He was an incredibly fun and interesting person but didn't win and he obviously has moved on to bigger and better things just as it sounds like Dan is doing.
I believe that most of the 3000 comments received after the contest ended are based on what I felt. The best designer DID NOT win! Dan demonstrated his talent and leadership from the beginning. Early on I was convinced that Dan showed the most potential with his “WHITE ROOM” challenge. It was a spectacular demonstration of his talent/creativity/inventiveness/thinking-outside-the-box. I have never seen anything better and I have watched all of the previous Design Star competitions!
In my opinion, Dan WON the final challenge and he was not rewarded with this year's "Design Star" contract. Antonio’s living room and child’s bedroom was so poor in comparison to Dan’s work. The whole Network should be ashamed of what they did. I just cannot believe the esteemed judging panel allowed this to happen, but they are also Network employees too!
I hate that people keep saying he was the best, not every room he worked in turned out good. When that happend he was all to ready to point fingers at anyone but himself. Where do you people get this from. Maybe the reason the comments are only 3000 is because the rest of us watching felt it was great to have a fresh point of view.
True, not every room Dan worked on turned out well. Helena's room was his low point in my opinion. Nor did every one of Antonio's rooms turn out good. In my view, however, and apparently in the view of most who watched, Dan had more rooms that turned out well AND Dan's best rooms were really outstanding. Just look at this season's "Top Rated" designs; Dan's white room is the highest rated design of the season, followed by his design of the Goldman house for the last season, with his design of Jason Priestley's nursery not too much farther behind. Antonio's individual rooms (Connor's room, Kathy Griffin's Office, Starr Remodel, white room challenge etc.) barely even crack 3 stars according to the viewers.
Are you trying to say none of Antonio's fans have computers?
Do I feel Dan had some wonderful rooms yes, but I seem to be able to look at it from a different point of view. I didnt like the way he treated his team mates, I hate two face people and I really dont like it when you place blame on someone else and throw them to the dogs. I watched Dan do this several times, but what no one is looking at is the back yard. Dan ended Torries dream of winning, he made a mistake that would cost who ever he worked for. He was given a budget, he was never given permission to make a descisson that would place them over budget not a hundred dolloars but 5,000.00. If he had his own show he would be a risk to cost a large amount of money, if you are a home owner it would be a hugh mistake. Forgive me but budgets are a rule as a homeowner it idoesnt matter how great the design the price and the design have to work. Dan came across fake to me, I work hard for my money I dont like to deal with people I dont trust. I dont want to watch them either. As for Antoinos fans maybe they feel their time is better spent waiting for the next show, also I am a fan of Antonios I think he will bring a little spice to HGTV.
Antonio's individual rooms (Connor's room, Kathy Griffin's Office, Starr Remodel, white room challenge etc.) barely even crack 3 stars according to the viewers.
Are you trying to say none of Antonio's fans have computers?
I totally agree, I have no desire to see his show, he was picked because they liked his "edgy personality". That was the only reason he won, I was disappointed in Vern and Candice, not Genevieve, she's as annoying as he is.
Sorry HGTV, you missed the boat on this one.
SO NOT TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GET OVER IT..
I agree 100% with joanovarq. Antonio is rude, crude and looks like a refugee from the Hell's Angels.
I think Antonios designs were terrible, beginning with the pink birds over the fireplace and ending with the bright green bedroom. His new show should be titled "Gypsy Designs". Give Dan a show and I will watch. I won't watch anything that Antonio is on.
Why would you want someone like david on the show??? Dan does have talent but another show like that would have been boring. Look at Antonio. His show is different and fun.
I'm so happy Antonio won!!!! I was cheering for him since day one. He definitely has something different to offer. He is such a character… I think people will love his show. Dan also did great and has much to offer but there can only be one winner. Can't wait to see Antonio's show.
I would like to see the other 3,000 comments, but not get on….
I saw up to the first 2500 comments and over 80% were for Dan. Antonio is becoming the villian here (unfairly) and it is really HGTV's fault. They are doing a disservice to Antonio even though I don't think he should have won.
I never realized there were so many people interested in BAD design(decorating)!!! HGTV needs to change the name of this show from Design Star to the Next Decorating Host because once again someone without a degree, formal training and experience. I don't know why I wasted 4 years of college to study interior design when apparently anyone "with a flare for decorating" can be a "Design Star"!! I too will not watch his show, the judges obviously felt threatened by Lonni & Dan especially Vern. Lonni was called out for her repitious design statements, HELLO has anyone not seen Vern's wall o' candles or wall o' birdhouses!! this was rigged the people would not have voted for him.
If you want to watch a character, watch Over Your Head. That guy has character, good design and he actually helps people with what THEY LIKE. If HGTV is looking for something new, I don't think they will find it in Antonio. Antonio looks like a biker, not a designer. I want to see good design for inspiration, not some Jerk with tats. Go watch LA INK and you'll see all the character you want, as for me I'll never watch Antonio's show.
Sometimes different isn't a good thing.
