Challenge 9: Meet Your New Design Star, Part 2

We received over 3,000 comments (wow!) after last night’s big announcement that Antonio is the new Design Star!

option-2a

We’re experiencing some problems right now with last night’s post, but we’re working hard to fix them. In the meantime, we want everyone to have their say so feel free to continue the conversation here.

  1. They obviously switched the landscape show with the "final 3 show" – didn't even bother to edit the judge's comments in the final 3 show… the landscape show looked like a throw-away to cover someone (Torie) leaving… it did seem rigged, have never seen such obvious non-qualifiers in at the beginning, none of the challengers came back to assist, design quality took a HUGE backseat to hosting. why not just announce you have a new show coming on with Antonio instead of pretending there was a competition?

devinci on September 14, 2009 at 4:19 pm
    • I AGREE. I HAVE NOTHING PERSONAL AGAINST HIM BECAUSE I DON'T EVEN KNOW THE GUY, BUT HGTV MADE A TERRIBLE DECISION AND THEY SHOULD CORRECT IT IF THEY REALLY CARE ABOUT THEIR VIEWERS. DAN WAS THE REAL WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

beautyhasgrace on September 14, 2009 at 5:37 pm
      • Could you please stop yelling at us by usage of "all caps" When you type everything in Capital letters it is very hard to read, proving very hard on the eyes.

Nothing about it and nothing beautiful or graceful. It is considered quite rude.

Ann Cummins on September 14, 2009 at 11:37 pm
    • Exactly, Why did'nt you just give him a spot. You truly made a mistake HGTV. I have a very bad taste in my mouth now for your shows/channel. Cancel my package that includes your channel in the line up. Sad really…

Mtngrl on September 15, 2009 at 9:46 pm
  2. Huge disappointment. Dan is a brilliant designer. He should have won.

LindaS on September 14, 2009 at 4:20 pm
    • AGREE COMPLETELY!!!!

beautyhasgrace on September 14, 2009 at 5:08 pm
      • I was especting Dan to win. I am no longer a loyal viewer and will never watch Antonio's show.

Vislude on September 14, 2009 at 6:42 pm
    • I totally agree with you LindaS…..Dan is such a superior designer..and that's what I thought the show was about! The blonde judge had the hots for Antonio…so obvious, that I was afraid he would win.
I certainly hope Dan gets his business up and running…he's so dang talented!

Nancy on September 14, 2009 at 8:06 pm
    • I am throughly dissapointed in the finale. Dan was hands down the best designer. I will not be watching Antonio. He is not a good designer and futhermore, he has a bad attitude. Why did they not let the audience vote? Oh, I Know, because Dan would have won and this is what HGTV did not want.

      Early1 on September 14, 2009 at 10:42 pm
    • I will definitely not be watching Antonio's show.

Guest on September 15, 2009 at 1:01 am
  3. I read the other comments before the site went down. They were at least 20 to 1 in favor of Dan and surprised Antonio won with his inferior designs.

joanovarq on September 14, 2009 at 4:20 pm
    • I think it was more like 80 to 1

      bgs7 on September 14, 2009 at 4:22 pm
    • I agree. I read the blog and people are quite outraged. It was clearly not a fair competition and to continue to pretend it was must be against the law… FALSE ADVERTISING! Anyone out there a lawyer and want to bring a class action suit against HGTV?

DAN SHOULD WIN! on September 14, 2009 at 4:36 pm
  4. Well obviously HGTV wanted someone DIFFERENT, but you won't catch me watching Antonio's show! He may have come up with some interesting design items during the course of the show, but his hosting is so tacky, I could not stand to watch him. I guess I'll just stick to my past favorites and wait for next year….

Cindi on September 14, 2009 at 4:22 pm
    • HAHAHAHA…EXACTLY. KNOW I'M DISAPPOINTED ON CANDACE, WHO IS MY FAVORITE DESIGNER, BUT OBVIOUSLY NOT A GOOD JUDGE, UNLESS SHE WAS OUTVOTED OR REALLY HAD NO SAY IN THE MATTER.

beautyhasgrace on September 14, 2009 at 5:09 pm
      • I'm sure she voted for Antonio. She was gushing over him every episode–and it had little to do with his design.

        cp86 on September 15, 2009 at 10:14 pm
    • My disappointment for Dan is overwhelming. His designs were lovely, unique, clever use of carpentry to give the designs WOW, and nothing happens. I really couldn't believe it, except I should have known when Antonio had "contacts on" and was dressed up for the last show.

      Jenny W. on September 15, 2009 at 8:33 pm
    • So don't watch, who cares?

catapatric on September 15, 2009 at 9:20 pm
  5. I have been with Antonio since Day One. He is talented, passionate about his work, and different in his approach. Dan is an excellent designer, but he is a clone of David B. HGTV doesn't neet two of the same. I'm waiting for Antonio's show to air. He is a winner.

Carol in AZ on September 14, 2009 at 4:24 pm
    • HE IS NOT A CLONE; HE IS ORIGINAL. YOU ARE SAYING THAT THEY ARE TWO REALLY GREAT DESIGNERS, AND OF COURSE ANTONIO IS DIFFERENT BECAUSE HE IS THE WORST DESIGNER!

beautyhasgrace on September 14, 2009 at 5:38 pm
      • Please turn off your CAPS. It is considered YELLING at us when you use them all the time and it is nearly impossible to read.

Ann Cummins on September 14, 2009 at 11:40 pm
    • Why allow Dan on the show in the first place then? Was one of the requirements to be a great designer AND be different from David?

joy on September 14, 2009 at 8:18 pm
    • When my kids were little, we talked about "Letterman," as in "Letterman takes away the 'c' in 'cup,' and it becomes 'up.' Today I notice that H&G is trying to use Letterman to make 'boor,' as in synonym for Antonio, into 'bold'.

      We're not buying it, H&G.

StacyMom on September 14, 2009 at 10:16 pm
    • I am glad someone else noticed that Dan was a twin of David. What is so sad about all of this, is Antonio is being trashed just because he was attempting to make his dream come true. I guess it is true jealousy is a horrible thing. I would like to know this, if everyone feels that Dan is a better man then Antoinio then what would Dan say to his fans about trashing one of his fellow team mates.

Jennifer on September 15, 2009 at 8:32 pm
    • So , let me get this straight if you have more talent it doesn't matter. If you are a brute and "different" (hello if employers hired employees this way they would be in trouble!). Best person for the job should nail it.

Mtngrl on September 15, 2009 at 9:50 pm
    • He's also greasy and dirty looking. I make a point of keeping my home polished and sparkling clean. Just why would I invite this disgusting, dirty biker into my home? All I can say to you Carol is "Carol, get a life and upgrade your slum yard life!

Annie Stevens on September 16, 2009 at 5:01 pm
    • Right now a clone of David B. would be refreshing.

sodoit on September 18, 2009 at 2:36 am
  6. did anyone notice the switch in shows, the weird continuation of, seemingly, a single sentence with different backdrops, clothing, food, etc.? i don't know if they want to bother with another show, given the fact they couldn't even be bothered to do any decent editing in this one!

devinci on September 14, 2009 at 4:24 pm
    • Absolutely know what you are talking about. I thought the same exact thing when there were the last three left and they showed them eating back at the house. First Dan is eating Ice Cream, then he is eating a hot meal, and back to ice cream again. Come on people, be more careful with your editing.

      Lois V. on September 15, 2009 at 12:34 am
    • Disjointed comes to mind. I thought they switched cameras, but soon realized it was lousy editing. Hey, why not! the whole show was lousy!

dpisme on September 15, 2009 at 4:58 pm
  7. I am totally DISAPPOINTED with the results. Like most of you, I like Antonio's personality. He is funny and "in your face" in an endearing way, but he doesn't know how design works. That is a BIG problem for me. If he doesn't know why he is doing what he is doing in terms of design, how is HE going to TEACH me? Dan understands how design works. Room for room his designs were much better in the final challenge. Antonio made rookie mistakes with layout in the family room. The sofa was way too small for the family to entertain with and the additional seating (the chair) had no connection to the rest of the space, and don't even get me started on the joke of a babies room! Compared to Dan's nursery for the Priestly family it was laughable. While we are on comparisons, did anyone else notice last night when they were going back over Dan and Antonio's individual spaces that they didn't even show Antonio's white room makeover? What does that say about his design skills?

Katie Van Dyke on September 14, 2009 at 4:27 pm
    • Antonio made over not one but 2 boys' rooms and they both were not functional or inspiring when compared to Dan's nursery makeover. What is HGTV thinking!! The public demands great design not cheesy, tacky hosting from Antonio!! Best of luck to Dan!!

olgasn on September 14, 2009 at 7:54 pm
    • Yes right on Katie. Dan's babies room was far superior to Antonio's. Also the white room challenge – Dan's was great, they never even show Antonio's. He doesn't have any design skill, his space didn't have any storage or function. It was a mis match of stuff. Dan's space had class and great design. Dan was able to explain the reason for his decisions. Antonio won on points that others got sent home on.

annielou on September 15, 2009 at 2:14 am
    • I totally agree! Antonio does not know real design. He admitted it out loud in the white room makeover, he didn't know what he was doing or why!! Dan will be missed…

twel on September 15, 2009 at 4:09 am
  8. The judges got it wrong. I could have done a better job on the little boy's bedroom than Antonio did. I'm sure that Mom wants to sit on a little stuffed cube to read to her son – NOT!! And if a designer pulled out my 2-sink bathroom for a 1-sink bathroom I sure would be ticked….hello, just close in the wall and put in a pocket door! DUH. Oh yes….and putting that wooden structure right above the fireplace opening is a fire hazzard!!

Dan's design was cohesive, and the mirrored sliding door above the fireplace was brilliant. Dan listened to his clients and they felt he turned their house into a HOME. Isn't that what it's supposed to be all about? MY TV is generally tuned to HGTV when I'm puttering about the house. You can bet I will change the station quickly when Antonio shows up. He's a set designer and it shows. He know nothing about personalizing a space for his clients.

ZZTop on September 14, 2009 at 4:28 pm
    • There were two stuffed cube chairs in that room – completely ridiculous and uncomfortable looking!

Katrina on September 14, 2009 at 6:14 pm
    • REALLY WAIT TILL THAT KID POKES HIS HEAD ON ONE OF THOSE STARS SOMETHING A PERSON DESIGN BACKGROUND OR EVEN A PARENT WOULD KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

JACK on September 14, 2009 at 6:28 pm
    • I totally agree with everything you're saying..!!

Judy on September 14, 2009 at 8:14 pm
    • Most people WANT two sinks in a master bath – so, will HGTV FIX the master bathroom back to it's previous level of function? This is another area that in previous eps, the judges have censured the designers for DOWNGRADING the function of an area.

      ked5 on September 14, 2009 at 10:00 pm
    • agreed. Antonio's designs were definitely not user friendly and trading two sinks for one is equally absurd to the people I see turning an extra bedroom into a closet. NOT an intelligent thing to do. I hope those people are okay with the value of their house going down due to the tasteless and low quality decorating they became victims of.

      grking1985 on September 14, 2009 at 10:24 pm
      • I'm in total agreement with you & the other comments above yours !!!

Guest on September 15, 2009 at 1:02 am
    • I also noticed the fire hazard. That surround is a code violation and the judges should have know that.

letmeout on September 15, 2009 at 2:56 am
    • Totally with this one. And that blank wall that he kept banging on to show the door was gone. What was with the lack of design asthetics? It looked like there were 4 8×10 frames. Who uses those anymore? I think they had made up there mind when Candice called him the Tony Seprano of Designers. They wanted something different. How bout find a rough designer that knows how to design?

      lancer72 on September 15, 2009 at 12:30 pm
    • ZZTop nailed all my objections – how many HGTV shows have we all seen that said that double sink in the master bath is a must! And that kid's room had what, 3 pieces of furniture (including that bed which will work for about 6 months! and the piece the homeowners supplied). What a waste. Antonio had the worst design last week – only Lonnie's failure with the headboard saved Antonio then.
I agree with all the folks who've said that the judges had already decided that Antonio would be a fresh addition to their host lineup – but I won't be watching his show until he brings in a real designer to help!

VTMom on September 15, 2009 at 6:04 pm
    • Totally agree! With that little bathroom vanity, there wasn't even any room to store anything! Two sinks to one sink with no cabinets…hmmm…designers should know how to INCREASE home values, not decrease home values.

jade on September 15, 2009 at 9:49 pm
    • I totally agree. This show was a sham. I am disappointed with the judges they KNOW better. I will
not watch Antonio's show. It is an insult to me. Design Star needs to take a permanent vacation
      break!

Lively on September 16, 2009 at 4:02 am
  9. I won't be watching Antonio's show. He's a rude, boorish jerk and his designs are tacky and far inferior to both Dan and Lonni.

Dana Jeanne on September 14, 2009 at 4:30 pm
    • AGREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

beautyhasgrace on September 14, 2009 at 5:38 pm
    • I totally agree.

    • I agree 100%!!!

Barbara on September 14, 2009 at 11:35 pm
    • I agree!!! Can not figure out what the judges saw in him. I would NEVER watch someone like him, and honestly, can you imagine having a bedroom that color????? And what's with that tacky grouping of small pictures spread out on the bedroom wall? Not only does he need design help, but a vocabulary lesson wouldn't hurt either! Yo, indeed!

      k dee on September 15, 2009 at 1:00 am
    • Thank You I couldn't put it any better!!!

    • I Ditto Dana!

pink on September 15, 2009 at 9:52 pm
  10. Yes, Antonio is funky and “different” but why didn’t you just give him a funky show to begin with. Since he has been associated with Candice’s show, this would have taken care of the conflict of interest in having both of them involved. I see something really different and fresh in Dan’s home last night. He wasn’t afraid to create what that mother and daughter loved. Isn’t that what design is all about, designing for the people who live in the house day after day. I would hire Dan in a heartbeat to create for me if I could afford it. Just the same way I would love for Candice to come to my home–Candice you can’t agree with Antonio’s designs. I also didn’t appreciate the way Antonio jumped around in his presentation. The most upsetting thing about last night besides Dan not winning was the way Antonio completed that little boy’s room. What was he thinking? He pushed a bed in the corner and had the mother sitting on a little store that looked like it came right off Walmart’s bargain shelf.

Sorry, HGTV, please listen to your viewers. There may be room for both in your lineup, but you lost an exceptional designer. Even if he wins the online show, that is not the same as seeing him create. It’s all about create–create! I’ll let Antonio’s fan watch his show. I need to turn HGTV off some anyway.

Sandra - Illinois on September 14, 2009 at 12:31 pm
    • What makes you think he was involved with Candice's show? I don't think that is correct.

srossi on September 14, 2009 at 4:57 pm
    • I agree, Antonio's hyper presentation was awful. Last week's presentation was so hyper as to be close to violent. Antonio speaks of and treats women badly. By that I mean he shows no respect. Look how he laughed in Torrie's face over the beige paint. And in the first episode in the green room wondering about Genevieve's availability also wondering about Kathy Griffin's availability as if all women were just waiting for him to pay them attention. Well, in Genevieve's case he might be right. Because he certainly didn't win on hosting or design talent.

SusanS on September 14, 2009 at 5:06 pm
    • I totally agree – The best "designer" did not win last night. I love Antonio and his personality but his design skills were lacking. I was intrigued by Antonio and his colorful, edgy personality, etc. – he is interesting and different but…and this is a huge but…Dan's designs were undoubtedly better. They were brilliant, polished and extremely creative! Dan deserved to win the contest hands down. That being said, HGTV discovered an interesting raw talent in Antonio, so capitalize on that too and why not offer him a show also…just not as the winner with the title of "Design Star" – Dan deserved that!
