Glad it's over. This is the first Design Star I watched and probably the last. Judges comments were usually rude, esp Vern and Genevieve. With limited time and resources, this is really a challenge. I've watched the show that the hgtv designers compete on and just because they have their own show doesn't mean they can always pull together a great room – and they often run out of time. The fact that they eliminated Lonnie because her helpers couldn't get the headboard on in time is just stupid. Get over yourselves!
finisher on September 14, 2009 at 2:47 pm
I've watched Design Star every single year, every episode. Very was never rude and nasty like he was this year. I used to like him. This year has turned many people off and many of us will NOT watch it again, nor Antonio's show. I predict it won't last.
Virginia on September 16, 2009 at 3:03 pm
Antonio is as good as Kim Miles. Their designs look like they came from the dollar store.
Kim's personality and design aesthetic on the competition is VASTLY different from what you see on her show. I think they were trying to give her some "sass" and maybe over designed here show for her which has unfortunately driven me from being able to watch it. I voted for Kim in that challenge, and if she was the same person that had participated in that challenge I would probably still be watching her show (is it even still on; I'm not sure?). If HGTV had wanted edgy design they should have chosen Todd over Kim – at least people weren't DISGUSTED by Todd's personality and appearance although some of his design was as avante garde as some on this blog claim Antonio's to be (and isn't!). No color Todd ever chose made me want to throw up, and he had a few wild ones!
dee on September 14, 2009 at 11:51 pm
Amen. They should have a show together "Miles and miles of crap"
chris on September 14, 2009 at 11:59 pm
Absolutely correct!! Won't watch either.
Anne on September 15, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Agreed
Virginia on September 15, 2009 at 4:04 pm
I agree. Both of them have no education in interior design. Education matters! The only decent designers at HGTV maybe Candice, David, and the guy from "rate my space." There are bunch of other untalented designers such as Vern, Genevieve. Owning their own shows do not mean that they are good. I am learning it by watching HGTV. It's all about politics and money.
Doori on September 15, 2009 at 6:27 pm
I am forced to agree that many of Kim's design concepts end up a little tacky looking. Kim was a good team player and so likeable on her season of design star that I still watch her show occasionally just because I like her. I think she needs more of a design on a dime format for lighting. She does make some cool lighting fixtures.
josie on September 16, 2009 at 2:11 pm
David I love you but I don't believe you!
Antonio's "edge" and accent is so tiresome to watch. Sorry HGTV, I'll be turning the channel! I'm not a dude he hangs out with at the bar so I can't handle the "Yo dude" and the terrible grammer laced with f-bombs. If Antonio and Dan showed up at Vern or Candice's home for a design job who would they hire? The professional.

Well said.
Lindsay on September 14, 2009 at 5:56 pm
and who would that be ? pergola boy ?
hope on September 15, 2009 at 2:17 pm
I wish people would stop referring to the pergola incident. It was Antonio who told Dan that Torie had alloted 10K for the pergola, but he didn't man up and admit it when the judges asked who was responsible. Also, Dan & Antonio shopped for the pergola TOGETHER! They BOTH picked it out, so please stop placing all the blame on Dan's shoulders. At least, he was man enough to speak up and admit his mistake, which is more than you can say about Antonio! He completely wimped out and left Dan & Torie twisting in the wind, even though HE was the one who put the notion in Dan's head that they had 10K to spend on it. If you people would do your research and find out the real truth about what happened, you'd stop beating Dan up for a mistake that he AND Antonio made together. Editing cuts out a lot, so we didn't see the whole story, but what we did see was enough to convince me that Dan, Torie AND Antonio were ALL responsible for that mistake, but only Dan & Torie shouldered the blame for it. Besides, when Dan realized what had happened, he and Torie went back to the store and re-negotiated for a smaller, cheaper pergola which only cost $5,500, so again…only Dan & Torie rectified the mistake that ALL THREE of them made. Antonio skated away scott-free on that one and I think that was wrong on his part. He should have manned up and admitted that he was part of the mistake, too.
Cheryl on September 16, 2009 at 5:31 am
My feelings exactly … Antonio wouldn't get in my house much less design it!
Lin on September 16, 2009 at 3:57 am
You've got that right! HGTV is soon going to find themselves with a great lack of people watching Antonio's show, future Design Star shows and HGTV. It used to be my favorite network. Not anymore.
Virginia on September 16, 2009 at 3:01 pm
DAvid…. your show is my favorite HGRV show… and I watch it most Saturdays.
I have to say with this vlog (which I notice they posted prominently…. where was thelast show vlog?) I feel like you are towing the company line.
There is no way Tony is a designer, or even a competent designer.
His living room was disgusting, and his master bedroom only a little less so.
Honestly, I could do better "design" than he did… I am still angry about the outcome.
I still say…. my challendge to you, Candace, Vern, Genevieve and Jim Sample is to have him remodel YOUR home.
I'd like to see how many of you would step up for that.
I find him offensive and boorish…. and I can say I defintely won't be watching hsi show… and probably not much HGTV since I feel lilke we were had on this "Set Design Star Competition."
Carol on September 14, 2009 at 2:50 pm
He may have to remodel the judges homes, after he runs through his friend and family's home. Then the board members and cast of HGTV. How long can that last? Gonna be a lot of disgruntled home owners employed by HGTV…
I guess the only way to get the judges for what they did ,is to have Antonio do a suprise makeover on each of their homes. I 'm sure they'd be singing he praises then . NOT!
guest on September 15, 2009 at 2:45 am
I agree! The judges were ordered to pick him. There's no way they would go for that awful design on their own.
ann on September 15, 2009 at 5:21 pm
You stated exactly how I feel…every word! And I ditto your last paragraph!!
Virginia on September 16, 2009 at 3:00 pm
I agree this would be a great challenge with HIGH Rartngs.
davidm on September 20, 2009 at 5:24 am
Get over it people, Antonio won. If you don't like it, don't watch his show! Simple. The pathetic whining and who lied and who said what and the pergola and the tan paint and blahblahblah? What good does that do? IT'S OVER!
It's like a bunch of spoiled bratty kids who stomp their feet and whine and pout because they didn't get their way! And now when David states his opinion it's still like some conspiracy as if he's toeing the party line and has no free will?! Are you kidding me? Get a grip – it's a tv show!
Antonio Won!!!!!! on September 14, 2009 at 2:51 pm
And you wouldn't be doing the same form of behavior or voicing your outraged displeasure had Antonio not won? I doubt it sincerely.
I'd understand if the the decision was based on talent of design, execution of vision, and hosting. It wasn't, in my opinion. Hands down, design-wise, Dan's was the best home, the best execution of design, and vast improvement in the hosting portion which placed him on equal footing with Antonio. So let's say two outta three, for those who like Antonio's hosting persona the best, and Antonio still won?
Where does "fair" come into this at all when it's HGTV's decision?! Sorry but even that perspective reminds me when my kids were little saying "but it's not FAIR"…foot stomp, pout.
HGTV picked Antonio as was their right. Just as everyone has a right to not watch any of it.
And no, I wouldn't be voicing my outraged displeasure if anyone else had won because really I don't care…I'll watch a show if I like it, otherwise, I don't watch.
My displeasure is with the way people, presumably grown adults?, behave on this comment board. I have never seen such ugly hateful commentary directed towards a human being just because the outcome in a reality tv show didn't go their way.
Antonio....still won on September 14, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Fair, as in the Design Star winner has ALWAYS been a triple threat. Meaning the best designer, the best one to execute their vision, and the best at hosting.
Hand's down, Dan had Antonio dead to rights. So what gives? Antonio's designed paled in comparison to Dan's, they were equally strong in making their 'vision' come to light, and Dan was the most overall improved in the hosting department.
Had America retained its right to vote in this year's new Design Star is anyone here in doubt that Dan would have been declared the winner? Really?
It's not like America has a given "right" to vote for competitors on a tv show design competition! Although I would love to see this much passion in people by using their true right to vote for the things that really matter like taking the time to vote for politicians who form our laws and public policy. The vote percentages are really disheartening when people in other countries don't have or die to have that right. But I digress.
And we're still on this "fair" thing? Just because the winner has ALWAYS been a triple threat doesn't mean HGTV can't shake things up – it's their show, their "right" and ultimately their decision this time. Just because you don't like the outcome still doesn't mean it's not "fair".
With design, as in art, there is something for everyone. Some like pretty landscapes that look perfect and realistic and some like the intense expression that goes down on an abstract. I'm open to appreciating (if not necessarily liking) all points of view and expressions of color and art and design. Even if I get one aspect of it gets me out of my comfort zone and forces me to go to another part of my brain to rethink something I'm all for it.
I think Dan would have fit a mold that was already very similar to what we have seen for a long time on HGTV. And I suspect he'll find a home at HGTV anyway, which would be great because he is very talented – I absolutely loved his white room transformation, it was amazing and incredible.
There is a place for everyone. But there shouldn't be any room in this world for the hateful ugly things people say on here.
Antonio..still won on September 14, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Yes, let's ignore the whole loser won thing and pull the old –quick, look what's that?–diversionary tactic, rather than address the point.
Antonio's designs were the bottom of the barrel in this challenge and he failed to improve in hosting. The least talented designs & hosting and therefore the least deserving person won a "design" competition and not for TALENT, oh no.
For so called 'freshness and personality'. BS, that's total bunk.
Actually I HAVE addressed the point. I just happen to disagree with you. Which last time I checked is not a diversionary tactic. That sounds way too complicated anyway. I think I'd need more coffee for that.
Antonio Fan on September 15, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Do you prefer a green nice decorated room by a Natural Talent Designer or an RV Mobile Home looking master room @ your house? LOL =) How old r U 5, 6 o r 7? Dan will be fine with a nice portfolio and a five star resume, but beign cute is not going to get you a show, he is good but Antonio is GREAT and that's what HGTV needs something else not more of the "same"… Like it or not Antonio have his own show now! Lmbo.
Actually, I would prefer Dan's elegant bedroom over Antonio's hideous green room. And when you keep asking people their age and making fun of them, you only make yourself look childish.
Cheryl on September 16, 2009 at 7:52 am
It is fair, and Antonio won. Enough of this crap.
AlllyK2 on September 16, 2009 at 2:16 am
People are simply stating their opinion as you did. Show a little class and allow people to vent their frustration if need be. And, you're right. Ultimately, they don't have to watch the show and they (and I) will not.
Chris on September 14, 2009 at 5:06 pm
People like you who say "Get over it" are just running their Antonio like mouth – "my way or not way" syndrom. If someone robbed your home or stold something valuable from you like HGTV stold two great designers from us, i.e. Dan and Lonni, then you would be complaining too. Obviously you don't know what good design is. We got RIPPED OFF and feel the need to voice our opinion; your opinion is not the only one that matters.
HAHAHAHA you like putting smiles on ppls faces dont you… no but really we are all wonder why is that antonio made so many design mistakes and dan loses design star? we arent being bratty just questioning why they chose him…
Andrea on September 15, 2009 at 2:33 am
Well the Dan Fan Club is an interesting bunch…that's for sure!
Maybe you're not being bratty, but I can't say the same about the members of the Antonio Hate Club here who are calling Antonio really awful names. The nasty personal attacks are vicious and sometimes disturbing in their level of hate. It has gone well beyond just questioning why they chose him.
Hatred and vile words directed at a human being don't have to go along with being outraged. I wish people would get this excited and jazzed and mad about things that really do affect all of us personally in this country. But that's America for you.
Antonio Fan on September 15, 2009 at 12:09 pm
I agree on the name calling and personal attacks, there really is no need for that. But Dan's fans are not the only ones doing it, some of Antonio's fans have said some pretty nasty things about Dan, too. It's just that there's an overwhelming majority of Dan fans commenting on the board so it seems that it's only one-sided. I'm a Dan fan, and I am questioning the validity of Antonio's win, but I see no need for name calling or personal attacks, either. People on both sides are letting their anger get the best of them and that's never a good thing. I hope HGTV executives realize how many people in their viewing audience love Dan and then give him a TV show, too. I think it would be the best solution. Antonio's fans get to watch their man on TV, Dan's fans get to watch their man on TV, and HGTV doesn't lose a lot of their loyal viewers. It's a win-win situation! HGTV, are you listening?
Cheryl on September 16, 2009 at 5:56 am
I totally agree! I think that he could be the " the Tony Soprano of design" as Candice stated. I enjoyed watching him and I believe that he can bring something different to HGTV. David is still the best ever Design Star winner. Love you David!
judy on September 15, 2009 at 3:46 am
Sadly, he didn't win!!! Not only were his designs mediocre the outcome reeks with the possibility of being pre-determined. Corporate America controls "ALL" these days. That's why the viewers' vote was removed from the equation. So be it ! I certainly won't watch the Antonio show, in fact I may not ever again watch Design Star…..it seems to be on a downhill slide.
Why so jaded? HGTV is not on any kind of downhill slide. It has grown year after year.
I've watched since 1999 or late 1998. And the quality and sophistication of the shows has increased and the budgets for the shows have come from expanded programming on the channel
We have come a long way from "Ye Ole Yankee Workshop" and some of the other shows that I tuned into faithfully. That is exactly I am so proud of the growth and HGTV's concentration on extending their viewership and I think Antonio fits in perfectly.
In the beginning there were commercial breaks. Loved it but the real growth happened with the addition of sponsors.
As a working artist I have especially appreciated the fact that advertising on HGTV is the most realistic for small businesses and affordable for a decorative painting such as myself.
So, cut them some slack.
But, most importantly, the network is not on any kind of downhill slide. No way. Some commenter tried to say the programming was not as good as 10 years ago. NOPE. Not a fact.
Get a grip, I won't watch Antonio's show and neither will the thousands and thousands of others who are angry whiners. Call us what you want but the main thing is your "boy" may have won the contest but he didn't win the viewers and HGTV is the biggest loser. So you need to shut up already.
Bill on September 15, 2009 at 4:49 am
Guess time will tell if Antonio draws the viewers or not.
Telling me to "get a grip" (how original), calling Antonio a "boy" (does that make you feel better Bill?) and telling me to "shut up"………does that change the outcome?
Nope. Antonio still has his own show and you're still angry and all the Dan Fans continue to spew out hateful words and conspiracy theories.
Who comes out ahead in that one?
I find there a much bigger things in the world that merit the level of outrage that I see on here. Say, when someone gets behind the wheel of a car totally wasted and causes an accident that kills people……that's the kind of choice a person makes that REALLY ticks me off. Getting this angry about a HOME and GARDEN television show where the big decisions revolve around paint color and furniture? Not so much.
But I guess that's just me.
Antonio Fan on September 15, 2009 at 11:46 am
I wouldn't be so sure of that either. I think many will cool down and realize they got too over wrought and spoke out in haste.
We aren't likely to know but I have far more faith in humanity than to believe that a majority of the folks sounding off will actually stay mad. Bet they might peek in and keep peeking in until they realize how unfair they were in their initial reactions.
How is protesting an unfair decision (acutally a "rigged" one) against the obivous winner, Dan, being over wrought and hasty? It's all about being fair and honest! HGTV has opened a can of worms on this one in addition to quickly becoming one of the biggest "rerun" channels around. In fairness, I talking about shows pre-2009, not current shows repeated for convenient viewing.
These spoiled bratty kids opinions make a difference. We're the audience to whom the sponsors hope to sell product.
fancyn on September 15, 2009 at 5:57 am
Coming on here and shouting it's all a conspiracy and calling Antonio really hateful nasty things……those are not the kinds of opinions that make a difference because the ugliness is taking center stage. It's now one big lump of irrational overreaction. There is big a difference between insightful commentary and opinion….and EXCESSIVE spite and bitterness.
The most powerful thing….you hold right in your hand. It's called a remote control.
I agree… I also wish they would all give Antonio a chance to prove himself. David B is my favorite designer, but if you look back on his season of design star… he made a few boo boos. Even his first individual show season, there were a couple blunders. But look how much HE has grown! I think Antonio will do just like he says he will. Bring It.. and Rock It! If he doesn't… we don't have to watch. But at least give him a chance. I respect the judges and believe they chose correctly. IMHO
If it's just a TV show why are you writing on this blog along with the rest of us? I think the majority of us watch HGTV because we enjoy it. We found their selection of the Design Star offensive to our sense of style and just wanted to comment so that the executive management, shows producers would know how we feel as fans of the show. I guess if we don't have to watch his show, you wouldn't have to read our comments. It works both ways.
KC Fan on September 16, 2009 at 4:01 am
You're right, I don't have to read "your" comments. But you don't have to read mine (or comment on them) either! We could go back and forth on that one all day.
I'm on here writing because while you feel you have to take a stance against HGTV's "offensive" selection for Design Star, I felt the need to take a stance against those who offend my sense of reason and tolerance over yes, just a tv show.
I'm all for standing up for something….but there's a big difference between telling executive management you're unhappy with their selection vs. carrying on about things that can't be changed (the paint color and pergolas), accusing HGTV of conspiracy, and worst of all, calling their selection (the person) offensive, hateful, ugly, disparaging things.
I do enjoy HGTV….. but the outraged hateful "fans" as they represent themselves on this comment board? Not so much.
Antonio Won!!!! on September 16, 2009 at 1:18 pm
I absolutely agree and that has been my perception all along about the foot stomping. Reminds me of precocious children who didn't get their way.
Fools, insulting Kim Myles and now David B and accusing him taking the party line just because he is not parroting what they want him to say.
The last thing I would accuse David of doing is spouting the party. He has always been an individual and his designs are honest and I believe his opinions are as well.
David also has humility and that is what is so lacking with these children who would accuse him of being dishonest without even meeting him in person. They don't know him at all.
Wonder what these folks would post if they were posting in their own names without hiding behind a mask , being able to post anonymously so they don't have to suffer any repercussions or accept the consequences of their immature insults.
Those claiming to be designers. Wonder just how many folks would be interested in hiring such prime donas. Many would not. I wouldn't because I have worked with some who act like this and shut down a whole project because the contractor tells them it impossible structurally to replicate the little picture they have cut out of a magazine.
I am a decorative painter and I interview designers just as carefully as they me before we come to any agreement about my being hired.
If you are unfortunate enough to be working for a prima dona and they offend the other trades on the job, it is going to be a rocky road. If the designer can't have respect for everyone else on the job and believes they are the only ones who know.
And then there are those who have caused so much trouble on a job site that the homeowners are now wanting to hire you out from under the designer and you can't commit ethical suicide like that.
So, folks get over it. Designers can be some of the most self-centered and unrealistic you will ever meet and then there are others who can work with anyone on a job site and bring the job in under budget and finish it on time, even including the homeowners wishes.
So I tend to dismiss some of the nasty, immature, judgmentalism that has been posted here and passes for communication..
That is the easy part. The hard part is to have to be exposed to those who call Antonio trashy, dirty, Neanderthal, gangster and the rest of the ugliness, suggesting that because he doesn't have a professional degree in design he must be "less than" or the "other" which shouldn't happen in a public forum and I still think it is because they don't have to affix their names or the names of their firms to the screeds here.
This is art and sometimes it is all in the eye of the beholder.
And for those fortunate to read the interview with Antonio done by "fu for thought" You will learn that Antonio learned right at his parents knees. His father designed windows for Macy's and many other high end retailers and that is almost a lost artform. He grew up in his father's studio and had his own small area where he did his art projects.
So, Antonio has a lot of experience in real life and he also benefited from the loving example of both of his parents.
I make my living as an artist, yet I have a MA in Public Administration.
Education teaches us how to learn. And I maintain Antonio already knows that and was taught by his parents first and life's experiences secondly.
So some folks need to step back some and hand the decision-making back to those who had a first row seat and stop trying to think you are better than any of the contestants because you weren't placed in the same situations.
David knows how fast and furious the whole thing goes and just how important it is to think on your feet and Antonio was very good at just that. He was much more sure of himself and Dan a bit more unsure. Antonio relied on his own designs and instincts and I really sensed that Dan copied those of others. I don't doubt Dan has the skills but I think he can gain from a bit more maturity.
From Dan's interview I got the impression he has so many skills and opportunities, he needs to step back and decide what it is he wants to do and can do best. What is his real dream?
He will do well at most anything he decides.
But I hope folks can move on soon and stop thinking there is some kind of conspiracy and stop thinking everyone is telling lies or is acting in bath faith. Those things come more from inside the folks spewing them out than they have anything to do with Dan or Antonio.
Anyone who liked Antonio and picked him, did so NOT for any talent whatsoever. They chose him because of his personality…one that I find VERY offiensive. YOU get over it!
Virginia on September 16, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Actually I was rooting for Antonio all along because of his stellar fashion sense!
Antonio Won!!!! on September 16, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Antonio Fan/Won: it seems to me like you're just as angry as everyone else. If this meant nothing to you, I don't think you would post so many comments. Your insistence in defending Antonion/HGTV strongly supports the notion that you would, in fact, be 'whining' as you say if the decision went the other way
amanda on September 16, 2009 at 10:34 pm
No, not angry.
But do I think all the talk of conspiracy and calling the winner vile things and rehashing every little detail or thing said on the show and going on and on and on about it like a bunch of whining sore losers because "their" favorite was not chosen for a tv show…. is kinda pathetic? Yes.
And regarding your notion… If you have read what I have said throughout you will see that for me, my issue or "cause" (for lack of a better word) is not about the decision or "defending" the winner. It's about the reaction to the decision.
I would have the same opinion no matter who won, if the reaction was what has been (and continues to be) the ugliness and desperation exhibited here.
Overall I'm really shocked at the level of anger and hatred. I've always loved HGTV and will continue to love HGTV. But I will forever have a tainted and different view of the type of person that makes up their fan base. I really just don't get it. In the end, nobody could ever defend or justify this kind of ugly discourse. Over a tv show no less.
If someone wants to comment in response to what I've said, I will stand behind my opinion and defend it, not run and hide (I would have created a username so I could be a "real" person" and not hide behind a guest name but I just threw my initial comment/reaction out there without thinking about it,)
That's why I've posted so many comments And that's why I've responded to you.
But this is it for me. I'm spent, done, worn out. I can't read another hateful negative thing on here.
I look forward to seeing Dan and Antonio as they join the HGTV family!!
Antonio WON on September 17, 2009 at 2:01 am
I so agree with you. What makes it worse is when someone steps up and tries to say anything nice about antonio they get jumped on. It especially bothers me when people question the integrity of the designers just because they don't agree with them. Thats really low.
David makes some good points about the challenge but the green bedroom could not have won. It was ugly and offensive. I bet those homeowners repaint that awful room. That's not eclaptic, it's called bad taste! The living room design was not put together well, and actually they could be on the HGTV show which rearranges the furniture to create a better space. The kitchen was nice but he had to paint that twice to make it right. I don't think it would have mattered what color he painted, they didn't choose him for design abilities. Obviously, C and G found him amusing but I feel his arrogant and abrasive.
Katsy on September 14, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Um, what exactly is "eclaptic"? I get the little red typo underline when I type that word, but then I type eclectic and guess what? No red underline! Wonder what that's all about? Hmmmmm.
I kinda like that new word though – sounds like something you'd tell your doc – doc I need help, I think I got the eclaptic. Sorry to be mean but this made my day!
Eclaptic? on September 14, 2009 at 3:04 pm
On the other hand, Katsy was exactly right! That was NOT eclaptic/eclectic – whatever – it's called BAD TASTE! I got the point, and I agree totally!

Sounds like a social disease you get when you spent to much time thinking of conspiracy theories involving Reality TV shows. When you guys figure out who really shot Kennedy, then we'll stand us and take notice. Until then, stop the rudeness. I think half the stuff they do on 'Design on a Dime' look like kindergarten crafts, but I don't go nuts over it…

Can we call Antonio Eclaptic? his new show "Eclaptic Tantrum"
Peggy on September 16, 2009 at 10:33 pm
I'm glad someone else didn't like that awful green color. I thought I was the only one with bad taste, all the judges and David think that was a beautiful color. I guess I'll never be a design star, because I thought that green color was UGLY.
No Design Star on September 14, 2009 at 3:21 pm
I hated that green color too. It was not a peaceful and restful color for a bedroom and all the judges plus you David should know that. Plus the stupid spread out pictures on the green wall can not be called design. Jason was put down for his "chotchkie" and yet Antonio was not put down for that stupid layout. Thus, more proof of tampering with the programing.
Guest on September 14, 2009 at 5:36 pm
I don't know about you, but many times I have picked a color in the store and really liked it from that small paint chip, painted my project only to find it just wasn't right. Watch HGTV, they recommend that you paint a small section and live with it for a while. Why do you think so many stores are now selling small jars of paint? Antonio said that many times when paint dries it looks different, and that is why he didn't like the color and changed it. I personally don't see that as a mistake. For all we know Dan might have had the same problem.

Yup, I agree. I did not enjoy watching Antonio or feel his designs were anything special. Infact, his design skills were not as good as you see on the RATE MY SPACE page. Dan clearly has talent. Hope HGTV realizes they are the laughing stock of the design community at this point. Loved Dan's use of light and mirros and the kitchen with the cabintry and stacked waasher/dryer…lovely staged table setting and chandilier, great bedrooms and living spaces. I could go on but HGTV is only going to delete this eventually!
Dan should have WON! on September 14, 2009 at 5:40 pm
Oooh the wall of mirrors was the worst! (The mirrored sliding tv cabinet was great, should have quit while he was ahead.) I guess if you like having a purple house, "stock" design and a bedroom that looks like the big bedroom in the back of a motor home (funny David said that because it was my thought exactly) it works for you….but not me.
So g'head everyone give me the big THUMBS DOWN!!!!! I can't wait!
boo on September 14, 2009 at 7:26 pm
You weren't watching – the wall of mirrors was not put up for design, but for function. The teenage daughter needs it for dance practice. It's actually commendable that Dan didn't just put up a large mirror, but put up beveled mirrors pieced together. The mirrors on the TV was an afterthought, to match the wall of mirrors.
Dan V My Design Star on September 14, 2009 at 8:11 pm
I totally agree! (And I am not usually a fan of mirrored walls!)

omg thank you but i actually liked that bright green and i was shocked at first but after seeing all off the softer tones around the room it made it better. i have to say i was pissed to see antonio win, not that i have anything against him, but i wanted dan to win before they even had the first episode of this season in design star. i knew he had it in him when he said "im the best" in his little clip. i actually threw my remote across the room when i saw that clive said antonio's name, i wanted dan to win before i even knew his name ( i used to think it was tim for some reason lol) but they mostly picked antonio because they have no one like him and dan pretty much reminds me of david… but not as good. over all i think that antonio really put out his feeling and passion for design and i can see where he comes from considering im only 14 and i grew up with a passion for it as well, and he really brought it out of him so that may also be another reason why they picked antonio.
Andrea on September 15, 2009 at 2:21 am
AMEN to that!!!

David-
Thank you for your candid comments. I think you're so wonderful.
iheartdb on September 14, 2009 at 2:53 pm
sorry David but that green bedroom was an absolute train wreck!!!!!!!!!! I love your shows, but cannot watch Antonio create another eyesore and call creative. The man has litte taste and if I wish to here someone talk like he does I can go down to some good old boys bar!!!!!!
dcr on September 15, 2009 at 4:50 am
I think that Dan's home makeover was better overall than Antonio's. Antonio is a great handyman but not so good as a designer. I agree with David that he uses too many little vignettes and does not focus enough on the big picture. I also agree with David and Vern that the living room floor plan was poor. And the green bedroom — that color would give me nightmares, or nausea, or both! I really liked Dan's idea of using the seasons as design inspiration — maybe he will develop this idea more when he wins the online show!

Funny-I couldn't tie in Dan's 'Spring' theme to the color palettes at all. Other than the lilac, he used all dark colors. I didn't mind them, but don't sell your design as having a theme it doesn't have, because the judges wil grade you accordingly. It's like entitling a book, "great themes in baseball" then writing about tennis…

Spring starts to happen after WINTER is over. Guess that is what he was referring to with the pops of color.

I don't know where you live, but here in the South when I look outside in the spring, I see a lot of dark tree trunks and shrub branches contrasting with pale green new leaves, mostly white, pink, and lavender flowers along with a few brights like yellow daffodils and forsythia, lots of young green plants, pale blue sky — I guess my view of spring colors here is just different from yours!

When I think about Vern's remark the week before about not installing the headboard I get very upset with Antonios room. Where the headboard was not installed because of time, Antonio's wood piece over the mantel should not have been installed because of FIRE DANGER! It left no 6, 8 or whatever inches clearance around the firebox. To me Antonio created a fire hazard for the people living in the home. HGTV should be aware of this since the same senario was created for people on TRADING SPACES and they had a fire in their home. All designers know that they need to have a non-burning material surrounding the fireplace. How can you design if you don't know the rules! I would FLUNK Antonio no matter how good a design would be since it created a FIRE DANGER for the client!
Barbara says on September 15, 2009 at 5:57 pm
Good point — I would hate to think of that poor young family losing their home to a design flaw fire! Hopefully the HGTV powers-that-be corrected the problem.

I will not watch Antonio's show, and I am a big HGTV fan. I thought Dan's design work was classy and elegant. The use of color was fantastic and rich, but also new and fresh. Antonio's use of color was harsh and not realistic. You would get so tired of that green in the bedroom so quickly. The child's room was a joke…the little boy will out grow the bed in a year. There was too little storage for a child, and I know because I have two of them. There wasn't anything in any of his room design that I could use in my home. There was so much in Dan's design that I could integrate into my home. Anthonio is just too harsh and the tatoo's are a real turn off. I am so disappointed as I was really looking forward to seeing more of Dan's design work and learning more from him on his new how.
Sheri on September 14, 2009 at 2:56 pm
I agree with you totally. Dan's design were professional, elegant and classy. I really admire his style of designs and I'm considering using some of his ideals in the remodeling of some rooms in my home. I really did not like that color green Antonio used in the bedroom. I was not impressed with his designs. I feel Dan should have won his own show, I watch HGTV all the time and they could use some of Dan's classy and fresh new looks.
Cathy on September 14, 2009 at 6:43 pm
What a disappointment. I would have watched Dan’s show in a heartbeat. I’m not at all interested in seeing more of Antonio or his designs.
I've watched Design Star every single year, every episode. Very was never rude and nasty like he was this year. I used to like him. This year has turned many people off and many of us will NOT watch it again, nor Antonio's show. I predict it won't last.
Antonio is as good as Kim Miles. Their designs look like they came from the dollar store.
Short, simple and TRUE!!!
I'm not a big Kim fan but she was picked by the fans. Just another example of how the producing of design star when south.
Amen!!
Amen. They should have a show together "Miles and miles of crap"
Absolutely correct!! Won't watch either.
Agreed
I am forced to agree that many of Kim's design concepts end up a little tacky looking. Kim was a good team player and so likeable on her season of design star that I still watch her show occasionally just because I like her. I think she needs more of a design on a dime format for lighting. She does make some cool lighting fixtures.
Well said.
and who would that be ? pergola boy ?
My feelings exactly … Antonio wouldn't get in my house much less design it!
You've got that right! HGTV is soon going to find themselves with a great lack of people watching Antonio's show, future Design Star shows and HGTV. It used to be my favorite network. Not anymore.
DAvid…. your show is my favorite HGRV show… and I watch it most Saturdays.
NOT!
I agree! The judges were ordered to pick him. There's no way they would go for that awful design on their own.
You stated exactly how I feel…every word! And I ditto your last paragraph!!
I agree this would be a great challenge with HIGH Rartngs.
How is that right? Or fair? It's not.
It is fair, and Antonio won. Enough of this crap.
People are simply stating their opinion as you did. Show a little class and allow people to vent their frustration if need be. And, you're right. Ultimately, they don't have to watch the show and they (and I) will not.
We got RIPPED OFF and feel the need to voice our opinion; your opinion is not the only one that matters.
gee, would your name indicate why you have no design sense either?
HAHAHAHA you like putting smiles on ppls faces dont you… no but really we are all wonder why is that antonio made so many design mistakes and dan loses design star? we arent being bratty just questioning why they chose him…
Well the Dan Fan Club is an interesting bunch…that's for sure!
I totally agree! I think that he could be the " the Tony Soprano of design" as Candice stated. I enjoyed watching him and I believe that he can bring something different to HGTV. David is still the best ever Design Star winner. Love you David!
AMEN!
Go David. Love your show.
Anyone who liked Antonio and picked him, did so NOT for any talent whatsoever. They chose him because of his personality…one that I find VERY offiensive. YOU get over it!
Actually I was rooting for Antonio all along because of his stellar fashion sense!
Antonio Fan/Won: it seems to me like you're just as angry as everyone else. If this meant nothing to you, I don't think you would post so many comments. Your insistence in defending Antonion/HGTV strongly supports the notion that you would, in fact, be 'whining' as you say if the decision went the other way
No, not angry.

I'm glad someone else didn't like that awful green color. I thought I was the only one with bad taste, all the judges and David think that was a beautiful color. I guess I'll never be a design star, because I thought that green color was UGLY.
"Eclaptic" ????!!!! Turn off the t.v. & read a book….please.
Better those mirrors than puke green walls. Yuck!
AMEN to that!!!
David-
Thank you for your candid comments. I think you're so wonderful.
sorry David but that green bedroom was an absolute train wreck!!!!!!!!!! I love your shows, but cannot watch Antonio create another eyesore and call creative. The man has litte taste and if I wish to here someone talk like he does I can go down to some good old boys bar!!!!!!

What a disappointment. I would have watched Dan’s show in a heartbeat. I’m not at all interested in seeing more of Antonio or his designs.
