I thought Casey and Micheal were pretty much equal with their boring rooms last night. However, I was shocked they sent Casey home when week after week they chose her to win the individual challenges and Michael was never once chosen.
I agree, Casey has continously shown the judges that she has vision, talent and motivation, Michael is a crybaby and needs to go, but I think Vern has a special place in his heart for Michael cuz Michael should have gone last week, I am not watching the show anymore and my HGTV days are OVER….. It's not what the people who watch want it's what the people who run the show want….. Not a tearful goodbye HGTV……
I too was shocked. Besides his annoying and MEAN SPIRITED personality he has a very limited audience he will be playing to – recent college grads??? And the hubcap table base (didn't he see "when Harry met Sally" and the wagon wheel table base episode. The murphy bed has already been done this season, hasn't it?
Should have been Casey and Emily as final two or Casey and Alex or possible Dan – Michael should have been done a while back.
I agree, Jodi. This is the worst Design Star ever. The format is horrid. Last night we had the final three, and I had no sense of their individual design esthetic before orafter the show. There were far too many group designs, and we weren't allowed a true view of the rooms before the judges made their decisions. The judges' role this season has been downgraded to rudeness, self-importance, and nitpicking, while the audience has no sense of what is truly happening on the show. We weren't allowed the opportunity to get to KNOW the contestants. Please DO NOT repeat this format. It wasn't worth the effort to watch this season, and that is a pity, as well as being grossly unfair to both the audience and also the contestants as .
I was very disappointed that Casey went home. She seemed to be the most consistent at performing better than her competitors. However, I have to say that I liked Emily's idea for a show the best. The whole re-use, re-purpose idea is old.
I'm also very disappointed in how HGTV advertised for the last show during the on-line version of this show. I can't stay up to watch it live, so I've been watching it on-line. I was very upset to see the commercials for the final challenge with only Michael and Emily standing there before I knew who went home. Talk about ruining the suspense. I love alot of the shows on this network and find myself watching it more than any other. However, I think there have been some poor programming choices lately. For example, I've been waiting to watch Antonio's show, and you're putting it in the 10pm slot on a Sunday? Do you want it to fail? Get rid of House Hunters and put your Design Stars in prime time.
You know what? It's not just about talent, but having a personality that translates well over television. And while Casey has been consistently good, her overall presence on camera hasn't improved. She's very stale and stiff. You have to strike a balance between both to have your own tv show.
Emily ran away with last night's show! I really liked her room. Michael and Casey's rooms were good.
So for me, it came down to: who's show would I watch? Casey or Michael? The runaway choice was CASEY! So who do they send home????? So disappointing.
Casey was/is a solid designer, but I think it came down to her appeal on TV. Sure, she is sweet, but she wouldn't be the most exciting person to watch.
Well I for one, loved last nights show. And thank you David for the compliments, i love you, by the way. My room was slightly nuts, just like me and i loved it.
Check my blog for my behind the scenes, people.

– Emily
It's great to see you here Emily- and I have enjoyed watching you all season. I enjoy your quirkiness so much! I know that YOU know who the winner is already… but good luck next week!
Well, the glass room challenge sealed the deal for me. I absolutely loved your room, love your design instinct, I Know you will win, and am putting in my humble request and to plead with you, your future show and the HGTV people who decide who the worthy and lucky guinea pig (homeowner) will be, to pleeese come down to my little tiny house in key largo where you can prove that function, fashion, and quirky can all be in the same sentence. (Or maybe not, sorry about all the commas!) Thanks for a great season and good luck next week!
Emily, I love your room from last night's challenge because I can feel someone living in it! I mean everyone has chaotic collection that stored memories; however, I often found those awesome collection be missing after a designer makeover the room. But you did it! You keep the personal collection in the room and make the room comes alive.
Hi Emily,
I agree with David. (Not just because I live in Miami, I love David too.) You had the best room. You weren't afraid to be yourself. When you came up with the theme of your show last night, I thought…hmm…design like you dress? I looked around my house and realized that's exactly how I have designed my home; clean, neat, with a hint of casual and limited accessories. I would love to see more of your quirkiness and sense of adventure on a show like this, so I hope you are the WINNER!
Emily, loved, loved, LOVED your room last night, and your blog with all the photos is so great! You just hit all my buttons with your style and TV presence; you deserve a show soooo much! Thanks also for your list of shops, wish more of them were in the SF Bay Area, but online works pretty well too. Can't wait for next Sunday – !
Emily, I thought for sure you would be in the finals and be the winner. You are such a beautiful presence , and your designs were refreshing and very real. I would have watched your show but doubt if either of the other two's will last one season. Don't know what the judges were thinking, other than they weren't. I think you acted so gracefully when you were eliminated and knew the judges made a huge mistake. Thank you for giving me ideas while you were there this year, as I have already used some and love the idea of refurbishing old to new. I know you will have a great future no matter what direction you go.
Emily is in the finals… I think you're referring to Casey.
Emily was the winner, Jude, Casey went home!
Emily, I absolutely LOVE your show concept!! I will most definitely watch if you win. Best of luck. You have a sweet spirit and gentle way that comes across on camera.
Emily, I love your style. Your room looked beautiful!
Emily, once again I have to disagree with you. Your room was extremely dated…from your dress, which was not at all modern, to your poor choice of accessories. And the pattern on the wall…didn't it go out with the 90's? I wouldn't trust someone who dressed like you and couldn't use a comb. Ruffled silk, with a leather belt and messy hair for national TV? Definitely does reflect your design style, but yuck. And you can't host your way out of a paper bag.
I like your designs as our styles are similar….not for everybody….I hope there time has come but not becoming trendy.
Emily, you are adorable. I would totally watch your show. Good luck! (belated, I know!)
I so agree with you. I thought the runner up last year was far better then Antonio. I, like you, have never watched on of his shows. I will also not watch next year as I don't think any of these people deserve a design show.
I agree completely! Antonio should NOT have been chosen the winner. I've watched him once and if he did a room for me I would be hard pressed to not cry for the cameras!
Not fair! I'm deaf and as much as I like to watch David talk, I can't read his lips. He thought Michael and Casey's rooms were boring and?
He was very enthused about Emily saying she did her best work this week (saying at last). I think he favored Casey over Michael but never was that specific…liked Casey alot called her "consistent" liked her bright colored wall, said little good about Michael, that I recall.
He said that Casey should have had a bigger rug with a pattern to tie the vignettes together. The frames were a good idea but unoriginal. He like Michael's couch, but there was no other WOW factor. He thought Michael has always been consistent AND inspiring, and Casey was consistent.
TY 2!!
He was also excited to see the twist on the designs…that they were to do the work with their shows concept in mind. He thought that was exceptionally challenging because of working with the production companies and television companies…how ultimately it boils down to what the designer could do or bring which others could find inspiration from.
Last year was such a disappointment with Antonio winning, I have never watched his show and never will, also what ever happened to the design star winner the year before. I can't remember her name but never saw a show for her. If Michael wins this year, I would never watch his show either. It was a mistake sending Casey home. Both she and Emily should be the final two. The judges need to rethink their choices. Nancy
Jennifer Bertrand won Design Star Season 3. She was pregnant, unbeknowst to her at the time, at the end of the show. Her child was born with severe birth defects and she has been spending her time taking care of the baby. So, she had to pass up doing the show.
Nancy, I think the design star two seasons ago gave birth to a sweet little boy. Then, if I understand correctly, the baby has had some serious health issues, if I am right in my understanding — her work with design star has had to take a backseat to her son's health (good for her!). I think though that she has done something in the area of color…but what I am not sure. They should have follow-ups on the final 2 over the seasons —–
what ever happened to Kim Miles (Miles of Style????
Nancy, I agree that the two girls should have been the final two, when Casey won several challenges and Michael never did. He was so cattie and bitchie with the other contestants along the way, that really turned me off. Vern was correct in that all along the way he would focus on one piece to the dtriment of the rest of the design. The best thing he did was the mirror. I agree with Serge, it was a Sun Room, that seem to be totally forgotten. Emily did win this one. I do disagree about Antonio, he is exciting, fresh, totally different approach, maybe being raised in southern Cal helps me get the Theatrics of his work. I loved The Cupcake Shop. He is a true Artist. D.S. this season is such a yawn in comparison, none of the designers can hold a candle to his innovative, rich in artistic expression ideas. He is so much fun to watch.
Thank you, Barbara, for your comments about Antonio's show. If a viewer hasn't seen it, they're missing a gem. I love his crew of misfits that have so much talent. Each one brings a different prospective of what home design means. I can't wait until he finishes the rest of his house. To be honest, after last season's final with Dan, this year is boring.
He's also still incrediably arrogant and flip. Sorry, but I find him unwatchable.
Can't agree with you on Casey or Emily. I think no one should get a show.
Did anyone remember that this was suppose to be a "SUN ROOM". I don't know about you. but sun rooms are suppose to be wimsical, different then the rest of the house. They are composed of wicker, rattan, bamboo, cotton fabric, grass shades, tropical motives and fabrics, everything that the rest of the house isn't. They should evoke an outdoorsy or tropical feeling not someone's den. Micheal, a murphy bed…really? Has anyone ever seen a murphy bed in a sun room, and sooooooo poorly made? Once again these people have proven that they know nothing of interior design. The only good thing is that we FINALLY got to see them working by themselves and not as a team. We now know we have been right about them….they can't design themselves out of a "glass house". If I had to choose the best of the worse, I guess I would have to say it was Casey, and she was sent home! Not one of those designers gave us the feeling of a true sun room, they were all more like living rooms, dens and bedrooms with murphy beds in them. Also the judges had to keep to their scrip and say wonderful things about their designs. God I wish they could be honest and really say how bad those rooms really were.
Go watch the show again…they weren't asked to design a sunroom, they were asked to design a ROOM in a glass house. Yes, some people refer to them as sunrooms, but in this case the reason the show was having them design in a glass house was so they could film them working easily.
They definitely called it a "sunroom". And I throughly dislike this season!!
I agree, I also understood "Sunroom". And, in that respect, I don't think any of them met the challenge. And I also agree with Serge that a sunroom would typically not have a Murphy Bed.
And, finally, I agree with most of the comments that Michael should have gone home.
Overall, a very disappointing season of Design Stars.
Caroline, YOU go and watch the show again! They did say……SUN ROOM. Read all the other replys, everyone also heard SUN ROOM because they did say… "sun room" not design a room in a glass house! Besides they could film them working just as easily inside a regular space. It doesn't matter if they are in a glass house or not, they still would be able to be filmed and seen.
Did you notice how Michael struggled with the weight of the bed as he lowered it!!! A funny moment that seemed to go unnoticed by the judges. If a strong fairly young male can not control the lowering of such a piece – who can?
hahaha i know i thought he was going to break his arms!!
I agree. I was expecting a fun sunroom – they did say the word "sunroom" – I LOVE sunrooms! They just scream relaxation to me. None of the rooms really read 'sunroom' to me either. I will say I agree with David's comments. I loved Emily's room, as it came together I really wanted to be IN the room (first time this season). I'm honestly not attached to any of the designers though, because I really haven't been able to get a sense of any of their design styles so far. Like everyone else said, not enough individual challenges! I'm glad Casey went home though, as much as Vern loved her, both of her video presentations were bland and boring to me. I could never watch a full show of just her, no matter how pretty she is!
Hurray, but you stole all my comments!
Michael should have been gone a long time ago- I won't watch any more. Please let Emily win – I really wanted to see more of Cortland.
i agree..I really cannot stand Michael's arrogance….so lame.
So very sorry to see Casey leave. I wanted "more". Not much more, but something in the frames, or a few of the frames, something to push it on over the top. It felt too safe. And Michael, I'm not a fan. Have tried, just don't like the way you have been presented on the show, either through your own efforts, via tacky comments or via editing. Emily, it helped to read your blog and understand the challenges, especially trying to be true to yourself and what I would call a sense of being "burned" after the first challenge. And, honestly, I love tchotchkes. Understand that less is more, but there are lots of us who want to keep our tchotchkes on display; they don't match, there's not enough to group, but we love our "stuff". Your style is permission giving, which isn't possible with most designers. As for certain things that are not your strength at this point in time, you are teachable… you can learn to slow down in speaking. Your heart shows in your design, and I was so glad to finally see it. Thank you. David, thanks for your comments, too. As always, right on, gracious, and helpful.
Can only disagree with you about Emily…she's so far out of style, she may as well be in another galaxy or time zone.
I ALSO thought the runner-up last year was far better then Antonio. And I also have never watched on of his shows.
Two points about last night — why was the judging of a "sun room" at night? It was wierd. (and I SO agree with Serge above). Had they been judged in the daylight hours, I think Casey would have been the clear winner — she was the only one that dealt with the sun. Also I thought she was the best anyway.
I definitely agree. I also thought it weird that they referred to it as a "Sunroom", then judged at night.
Perhaps someone should be judging the "judges"
Thanks Philip. I also agree, judging a "sun room" at night……WHY?
