Alice in Season One DS, lost to David, because she hung pictures on the glass wall that blocked the best view out of the room. I guess Micheal got to stay, because he didn't block the view, of that bill board, behind his sun room. The girls, too, ignored the view, and all three ignored the site itself. I was hoping the one of them , at least, would have had the design sense, to re-purpose the sun room, to work with the NYC site. But, I forgot, that none of the contestants were talented, creative or real designers.
The show is one big contradiction.
Alice lost because David's room was superior to hers. I remember that challenge. I liked Alice but was disappointed with her glass room. While the style of David's room is not to my taste, I have to admit that he did a great job on it. I remember his white room, too-the best until last year with Dan Vickery's brilliant take on it.
Season 1 was a win-win situation…both good designers! AND, guess what?
AMERICA got to CHOOSE! What an idea!
I can't believe we don't get to choose the winner anymore!
Am I the only one who thinks this show is as rigged as the Dream Home giveaway?…I'm sorry but the winner of this contest seems predetermined to me.
Isn't every "Reality Show," Fake?
Yes, except for maybe American Idol, since it's the audience that determines the winner, but who knows maybe that's even rigged too!
As Stalin correctly pointed out: It is not who is casting the votes that matters. What matters is, who is counting the votes." And, the casting of contestants, to begin with is out of the viewer's hands entirely. So, you are choosing, from the producer's choices, anyway.
True! I think they've been easy on Michael the entire show, and have eliminated numerous, better designers. Casey, Courtland…even Nina —all better than Michael. It's obviously rigged.
I strongly disagree. Michael has been consistent with his design efforts. He will be a great TV host. I truly hope he wins!
Michael has been consistently BAD in his design "efforts." His hosting was lousy. What have you been watching? Couldn't have been the same DS, that everyone else has been watching!
Susan, you're not alone. I'm there with you.
I must point out though, the obvious. This show was taped months ago and edited down to what we see. It looks rigged, but we really don't know because we are not seeing the same things we have seen in the past – budget limits, time crunches, pros/cons in each design or presentation. We see a very small picture of the whole thing. Plus, let's be honest with ourselves and everyone… those team challenges didn't show us ANYTHING that last night's episode did. Yeah he coasted through to the finale, you can make an argument for that, but it seems everyone else, from what i remember, had ups and downs throughout the contest. Think about the big picture before you start screaming, "RIGGED!" like a carnival game. Outer appearances won't tell the whole story – aka don't judge a book by its cover.
susan, I am in total agreement with you. We're the "black-sheep" bloggers, but i think Michael is going to change the face of design hosting. He's a charcter! And i'm sure all of us at home love watching him freak out and pull something crazy…ok who doesn't. I mean, being a good designer is great! But we've got David Bromstad, we don't need all that lovely, poppy, crazy perfect, innocent design host!!! We need someone we can get a crack from and show us how to be a make-doer. He's hilarious and he's such a drama queen! haha, i love him, and i'm sorry if y'all disagree with me, but he's straight out of a soap opera comic book and I love his emerging style of hosting. Good HOSTS!!! that's what we need on this Design Star. These judges are a little un-based in their "judging"…and what happened to Clide Pearce!!!???? Do we just love these shows, or do we (i don't want to say this) "fall in love" with the host….haha! look at Jay Leno!! Micheal's a b, but aren't we all? He's real, he's himself and his show will be…..very interesting.
I'm sick to death of drama queens! They're shoved down our throats on just about every show and it's tireing – it's boring and it's YESTERDAY.
agree!!
Amen! I have thought that too. And my thoughts were confirmed at the beginning of the season when Emily should have been gone for that terrible room debacle!
I think this new version of DS is a complete joke. You cant even tell what each designers personal style is. They have these lame challenges that are no where near as good as the previous season. Its not realistic. Atleast in the previous seasons there was a budget, a time limit, smaller teams. Mark Burnett Productions is an awesome production team but they seriously EFF'd up this show. Besides, after Antonio won over Dan last season I pretty much accepted that this entire show has become about image and not about who the best designer will be. Kinda like Project Runway.
lame.
I think I'm burnt out on HGTV…I used to watch it all the time, but now it doesn't matter to me anymore…I mean it's not like I'm missing much anyways, half of what's on is a repeat anyways!
Oh Goody…..ANOTHER gay man with a decorating show on HGTV. Sorry, but I was really hoping for a little more diversity….and this one is especially arrogant and annoying.
I totally agree!!!!!!
agree!!!
His sexuality should not matter. If he has good designs, a solid show concept, and friendly hosting abilities, he should win. I highly doubt he made it this far based on something so small as his sexual preference. If you don't like his lifestyle, that's one thing. But he doesn't base his designs off something so intangible. Grow up a little, please.
I agree with you Marie, his sexuality should NOT be the issue. Look he has made it ti the final Two, and my bet is on him to win, they all have been good desingers, but his in the final two for a reason. can't wait to see next weeks show, holding my breat for michael
I agree Darlene and Marie – the thing is: Michael makes his sexuality THE ISSUE — he has been doing so the entire contest. It's old, trite and quite frankly, IMMATURE and BORING.
No, his sexuality doesn't matter.
But this man is GAY!!!!
If he wins, his show should be called "Ooh Gurl!… I'm gonna decorate your house, and hit on your man.
I'm gay, and this guy is just so over the top.
tottaly disagree, he has made it this far for a reason, obviously the judges don't care if someone is gay, black, white, what ever race they are. I like michael, I don't think he is arrogant or annoying, he is confidant witgh his style and his sexuallty…all of them were great desingers, but my bet is on michael
Agree with Marie, a network like HGTV is neither impressed nor repulsed by diversity. Michael speaks to the judges, although I can't imagine what they see in him. Whoever they choose will get a shot at a show, and you can count on the network burying it into an unfindable time slot if they think it will bomb.
I think you'd be better off hoping for talent from whomever it comes……that a contestant is gay is irrelevant especially in the design industry…that a finalists in a design competition is a cipher should be much more disturbing.
Completely agree – I'm sick of "drama queens" as if they're the ONLY DESIGNERS in the world – they are not – they are "dated" as in YESTERDAY's "big deal" — the taboo has been broken repeatedly and it's BORING NOW. How about a Straight man in design — here's a novelty, how about a straight WOMAN for a change! Let's see some DIVERSITY HGTV!
Or even another "gay" man that doesn't feel the need to demonstrate his sexuality first and foremost. Now THAT would be a CONFIDENT gay man.
I AGREE 100 %
as a homosexual man and also a designer – I would LOVE to see a straight TALENTED designer win this ( not like ANTONIO – what is up with him? ) did you see that MESS he designed last week on his show?? AWFUL
anyway…
I am late to this blog, but I wonder if anyone else is extremely disappointed and more and more likely to give up on this show next season. It seems to me that this competition has gone downhill every season since the first one. Very few individual challenges; the judges seem to get meaner every time……I'm not against the crits just not telling the remaining designers to "get out of here" in a rude way. Vern needs to chill out, I think. I have less and less reason to watch HGTV these days as I am NOT in the market to buy or sell a house. I'd love to see more design shows for the regular viewer and we both definitely miss all the landscaping shows that used to be on. I wish we got DIY or Fine Living networks, but we don't.
I don't think there is a Fine Living Network anymore…it morphed into the Cooking Channel. I enjoy watching Food Network, but I loved some of the shows on Fine Living (where some of the design shows went to live after being booted off HGTV-Kenneth Brown, Christopher Lowell, the shows where they take expensive rooms and do them on a budget, shows like that. I miss the gardening shows, too. I liked "Gardening by the Yard", among others-that guy is a hoot! I liked "Designers Challenge" and "Designing for the Sexes". I actually really like "Divine Design" but I agree with others who mentioned budget…or the fact that the budget is never discussed on her show. Candace has some pretty high end stuff on there…way above the average person's means, I suspect. I was never a fan of Genevieve on "Trading Spaces"…liked Vern okay, but his taste is too modern for me (at least on TV; his home has some traditional elements and is quite elegant). I'm watching DIY more and more these days…too bad, too. I waited years to get HGTV, but it promptly went downhill when I did.
WORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After last years fiasco I almost didn't watch this year. Last year really turned me off on all three judges. I just had to tune in for the "White Box Challenge" though, and that got me hooked for another season. I never would have picked Emily to make it this far, and I honestly hope she wins. I do have to say that if I missed a show this year it didn't bother me at all.
Ditto
I agree with you Rose. I am not in the market to buy or sell a house so this channel just doesn't appeal to me anymore. Why can't we have more Color Splash, Sarah's House, Divine Design, etc? I work during the day and all that is offered for evening viewing, as you said, is House Hunters etc.
I agree and I don't even live in the U.S. The quality of programming is not as good as it used to be a few years ago. While I love the Design Challenge, the judging process needs to be reviewed. Vern I feel is not quite what the show needs…and quite frankly I don't like his work either. While we may not be trained and qualified designers, viewers like us having been watching consistently enough to know when the selection process is poor. And another judging criteria is the portfolio of work for each contestant that is on the website…so I am now watching less HGTV and more of Wealth TV…
I feel the same way–who cares about people looking for houses? I want design information & inspiration for real people. I don't think Vern or Genevieve really get it–I do love Divine Design but who in the real world has such an unlimited budget? I hate not to like HGTV but it's happening!
For the first time since Design Star first aired I am very disappointed with the decisions that the judges have made. The final 2 are just not what I would want to see on HGTV as a Designer. They do not impress me at all. Don't get me wrong I love the judges. I always watch their shows, but I just don't agree with the decisions they have made with this group of so called designers. The only one I thought had any talent was Courtland. Why they did not keep him is beyond me. Michael just does not have any talent. Sorry Michael, but you don't. Casey and Emily are okay, but not great. I just hope that something more comes out in the final show next week.
I would have never picked Michael and Emily as the last two standing…Michael is arrogant and Emily looks like a hillbilly mess. I haven't seen one positive post on here…if there was one, I must have missed it. Sure hope the corporate office for Design Star read all these posts and make the proper changes for next year. Otherwise, I doubt if anyone will be watching…..
I agree with Rose, tonight's (Monday) lineup on HGTV is House hunters International, House Hunters, Property Virgins, Property Virgins (again), House Hunters (again) Designed to Sell (At last a design show!), House Hunters (again for the third time) and ending at 10:30 guess what? House Hunters International. What happened to Over your Head? Hammer Heads? Give me more Lisa LaPorta who can make 2 grand go further than anyone!
I agree. Lisa is a real designer. What happened to Designed to Sell? They took it off at 6 p.m. and put "Holmes on Homes" on. Who wants to see him rebuild the same things every day. Where did all the good shows go? And don't even get me started on this seasons Design Star. It's a joke. No talent (except Courtland) and judges who are watching a different season. Give us talent like David Bromstad!
Yes, all the weekday evening shows (prime-time) are about buying or selling a house–I suspect this is because of advertising revenue. The real estate business is hurting and they are trying to get people to buy houses again, and they must have the deep pockets to pay for prime-time advertising–there must be some sort of connection. Some new and interesting design shows are now on during weekdays. If you aren't home then, try recording them. Weekday advertising is probably cheaper, is my guess. My favorite show right now is Colour Confidential, and I'm also enjoying First Time Design, Splurge and Save, and Destination Design, because they are creative and colorful and I can relate to them. Oh yes, I still love Design on a Dime–I've learned a lot from that show.
All of the "designers" showed a lack of talent. Producers could have done much better. The challenges were unrealistic. The judges appeared biased in many cases. Vern should go back to tworking in Atlanta. A decent show the first two seasons has been run into the ground by incompetence of all concerned. Don't bother scheduling next season if 2010 was the best you had to offer.
I just can't believe that the final two people that are left are Michael and Emily. Unbelievable. Ultimately I think Michael wins with a biased panel – Genevieve has had the hots for him the entire the show. There is kind of a novel original aspect to David Bromstad's show, but I think adding Michael will drag down David and infringe on his gay man designer turf. Two gay designers are too many for HGTV…it's going to bring down David's ratings and Michael won't get the kind of ratings he would if was the only gay male designer on the network. Perhaps a beneficial outcome as a result of the gay designer overload will be a shift by viewers to some of the other shows?
Are you kidding me, what an incredibly stupid, bigoted remark to make. What does being gay have to do with design? Do you really think that David is the only gay man on HGTV and having one more is going to spoil it for himself, HGTV or their audience? Who cares how many gay or straight designers are on a design show, it's what you are made of that counts. It doesn't matter what your sexual orientation is. There are a lot of straight designers on HGTV, do you see any of them infringing on the other's "Straight Designer's Turf"? To say that having too many gay designers on HGTV is going to be a benefit demise, for having too many gays and people will start tuning to other shows, only emphasizes you incredible ignorance and bigotry. You forget that the interior design world is full of not only gay men but straight designers and guess what…. they have not had a beneficial overload on society.
Vern should be crying! This is the worst season there has been, David Bromstadt set the standard and all seasons have failed to be as creative. Finally with the sunroom challenge they put forth thier "best " efforts..a litle improvement over the last 7 weeks
