Paint Color Inspiration: Orange

Last time I posted about paint colors, I was inundated with questions about finding the perfect paint color for rooms I’ve never seen. Because color is highly subjective, and requires that you actually be in the space to determine which “green” or “yellow” will do, I can’t answer all your dilemmas. That said, feel free to fly me to your home for a free color consultation; I work for chocolate.

Otherwise, you’ll have to rely on these wonderful readers’ rooms from our Flickr decorating group. I’m going to highlight a new color each week, and encourage you to chime in if you’ve used the color in your home. Better yet, post your photo to our group!

Get ready for some Roy-G-Biv-style inspiration. We’re starting with orange, a stimulating color that’s full of excitement and perfect for fall.

  2. Heidi: I don’t have access to the specifics of Kim’s paint colors, but I can give you the link to products she used in her room.

  3. I painted one wall of my livingroom orange and I like to paint the others in a color that will match with orange, but I had bought two galons of paint that doee not match at all with the orange wall. My sofas a sack fabric and look very nice with the orange wall. I went home depot with a sofa pillow but it didn’t work, they gave me a color that doesn’t match. Can you tell me a color that will match with my sofa and my orange wall?

    Thanks in advance,

  5. Here’s my question. I’d like to choose a color for my living room, that well goes with everything, so that i can change out my accent colors every season. My couches are nubuck (totally neutral leather) and the wood is a mix, some cherry, some pine, i plan to change out my dark green carpet for hardwood soon, but my walls are white. I cant choose a color that will go with everything, except beige, and then my couches disappear into the walls!! help

  6. I have one wall of orginal knotty pine, tongue in groove paneling (real wood)in a Craftsman kitchen I am trying to remodel. I have fairly new white and black appliances. The floor is wood but we expect to cover it due to some black paper that was under the tile. The cabinets and counters tops and sink will all be new.

Anyway, the paneling is sort of an orangish brown. Any suggestions on how to blend that in with white & black appliances?

  7. I love the clean look of modern design, and I actually like the minimalism of it. But my question is how do you keep a modern room design minimalistic, but at the same time inviting and family friendly?

Fiona on October 12, 2007 at 10:50 AM
  8. Pat, I find that sage greens work well with orange knotty pine. If you would like to paint the paneling make sure that you prime with a shelic based primer so the knots will not bleed.

  9. We recently painted our bathroom a really pretty tangerine orange. The top third of the walls are this color and the rest of walls are white marble. Other than this, we don’t really know where to go with the design. We love the color and really want to make it stylish! Help!

  11. Boy, am I glad to know others are going orange.
I let my boyfriend pick the color (orange)for our new livingroom, since he’s in there alot (TV)and I thought he was crazy. We picked “orange blush” from Vaspar.
Thank you Carolynn Pease. Cranberry was the direction I was going to go with accents.
    Goodluck everyone.

  12. My main living area is open plan. Living room divided by half wall with family room and kitchen area on the other side. I painted my kitchen orange (the color of Home Depot’s sign) and the living areas a sage green. Sofa and love seat are sage also as are the sheer curtains on all four windows. I have a deep brown/earth color tile floors and stone, metal and glass accents.I want to add some throw pillows in orange, yellow, green and brown. Many people comment on my color choice for the kitchen as orange is not typically chosen. I have not had any negative comments . Sue Parker

  13. I painted my living room “Autum Glow” two years ago. At first my friends thought I was crazy but as soon as they saw it up they loved it! The room is huge (vaulted ceilings) but it feels very cozy. I have found that lots of colors work with it, from blues to browns and even orangy-reds.
I chose the color scheme for my entire house from my favorite oil painting. It is of trees with warm, fall-colored leaves. I have to say it really worked for me. Every room just seems to flow into the next (colorwise) and I feel like I’m in that painting year round!

  15. My kitchen is painted a burnt terra cotta color. I’m really tired of it, more so cause I get sunlight from the sliding glass doors in the family room across from the kitchen, but I don’t have a window in the kitchen. I feel the color is too dark…..I don’t have enough lighting coming in. Should I change the color completely, or is there a way to enhance and spice up the color I already have.

  16. I need HELP!! I love the color lime green. I want to use this in my bathroom. I bought the curtains, shower curtain, and accessories in this color. my lamp shades are also in lime green. I am confused on the wall color I don’t know wheter to go purple or that really pretty blue/turquoise color. My bathroom is med. size not really tiny by by no means large. I have med. wood trim in there. I just don’t know which way to go I love both of the colors. thanks

    • Try three colors, your lime green, a deeper green and the blue. They are all very relaxing colors for a spa like feel. Have a good day.

  17. We have turned our sun-room into a master bedroom. the bottom of the walls were the original big bricks of a back porch. we put up walls and have papered them with a log style wallpaer. looks great but the top of the walls which are seperated from the bottom with shelves all the way around are acutally outdoor siding in gray. We want to paint these a chocolate brown (i think) not sure if you can paint siding it is vinyl. please help I really want this room to have a very rustic feel to it. wish I could afford to have someone from hgtv come in and redo a room for me. I also have a living room that is americana but is long 11×24 and very hard to put into order it also has two entryways to other rooms right in the middle which makes it almost impossible to arrange furniture correctly. please help me i am going nuts!

  19. I hired someone to paint my half bath and the color I picked was a warm orange, but it looks like a pumpkin exploded in there. I was aiming for an old world feel –decorating with light golds and reds. Does anyone have any ideas how to tone down the color without painting it all over again. I do plan on changing the light bulbs to soft white vs. the clear vanity lights.

  20. I painted a master bedroom Jack-o-Lantern by Hirshfields. It is striking with the white trim and fabrics in the room; and compliments the warm wood bedroom furniture. Definitely the place to be on a cold winter day!

  21. i just painted my kitchen and dine in area orange and am now want to start on the tiles. Can anyone suggest what color would be good? the Orange is quite bright so was looking for something neutral for the tiles..

  22. For all having trouble with colors for orange I suggest thinking of an autumn grove of sugar maple trees and fall fields. Creams, tans, umber’s and ochres, greyed and browned greens and grays, slatey blues are quieter colors to mix with orange. White, black, purple, cobalt blue and chrome yellow, true red etc will keep the energy level high. The intensity of the existing color will determine your best blends.

  23. I’m planning to paint a bedroom that measures 13′by 16′. On the two opposite walls that are furthers apart, I would like to paint them with strips using Benjamin Mooore electric orange (2015-10) and I’m not sure what other orange to use to create the stripe. I’m thinking an orange with more brown huges. But I don’t know?

I need some help on my ceiling color as well. I have a steeple ceiling in the room. I’m thinking I could use a light aqua color for the ceiling and other two walls.

It’s my first time painting and I’m not sure my colors will work well together. Please help!!!

    • Try using the same color one with a high gloss and the other with a low gloss that will give a good contrast. You can paint all the wall with the low gloss paint first then add your stripes with the high gloss paint. If you want the room to look shorter do horizontal stripes. If you want it to look taller do vertical stripes.

If you like four colors, use the color wheel and make a square that will give you four colors with your orange as a starting point. It might be something like this orange, red, blue and green. You can use the orange and blue as the dominant colors with the other two in the accessories. Have a mix of the colors in the bedding and window treatments. That will tie it all together.

What a lovely room that could be. Enjoy.

  26. I have a large living room with only one window, southern facing, that takes up one entire short wall of the room. I tiled the facing short wall in cork tiles. I painted the room orange (think Velveeta cheese) and have beige carpet and beige and black furniture in the room. The problem? I can’t find the right ceiling color. When the ceiling was white, the entire room glowed orange. I also tried a light beige and a dark beige, and I’m still not happy. Suggestions? I want the room to have a warm autumn feel.

  28. Once, after I resolved that I would not be my predictable self and pick white, I went off the deep end and tried a color called pumpkin spice. It was awful! It really was pumpkin orange. It was horribly overpowering.
I am hopefully buying a home soon and I have already started looking at paint colors. Again, as usual, I am drawn to fall colors. Spicey reds, oranges, and golds. Here I sit with various shades of the same colors but I already know that once I have chosen the ones I like, I will not know what in the world to do with them!!!! Especially the orange!!!

  29. NEED HELP BADDDDD…..

I painted my living room walls an orange. And its sort of a burnt orange the color is OR09. And I have dark brown furniture.. I Need to find another color to lighten up my living room or want to know if its possible to use four colors and what would the third and fourth color be. I like to get throw pillows, area rug and curtains to match the third and fourth.. Do you have any ideas for the last remaining colors… Thanks alot for the help..

Shanel on August 18, 2009 at 8:48 PM
    • Try using a butter yellow, blue and violet along with your burnt orange. Your dark brown furniture will be a contrast to it all. Use the other three colors as accents in the pillows, rug and curtains, art work. Have the colors mixed well though out the room. It will feel more tied together. ( The yellow and violet are complementary colors, as are the blue and the orange.) It might take some time to find the right colors in things, just keep looking. It sounds to be a very beautiful room. Have fun putting it all together.
