Design Intervention: Add Color To Your Walls

Problem: I’m not allowed to paint my rental home, but I’m sick of the beige! How can I spruce up my walls?
When I first toured my new apartment, the white walls seemed crisp and clean. But after a few weeks of living in the space, it started to feel downright institutional. I didn’t want to hang the same unframed posters I’d had in my last apartment, or rush into a bad paint color, but I was — literally — whited out.
If you aren’t allowed to paint, or would rather leave your rooms neutral, never fear — there are several clever alternatives to paint. Here are some of my favorites:

Flickr member kbreenbo has got the whole world in her room — or her son’s room, to be exact. This oversized world map, available at 4 Corners Maps ($120), has a sticky back for easy mounting, comes in eight panels so you can feature your favorite parts of the world. With this hanging over my head, I’d be sure to have sweet dreams about all the places I’d like to travel — and I’d know how to find them all on the map.

Another Flickr member, runyon, used removable wallpaper strips to cover outdated wood paneling in her rental. Try shop twenty2 for a great selection of wallbands like these. Just make sure you keep the box to prove they’re removable — runyon’s landlord insisted that the wallpaper was a “structural change” to the apartment because it looks so permanent.
These Inhabit Wall Flats — peel and stick 3-D wall patterns — make white look anything but drab. They create a clean, modern look, and are made of eco-friendly bamboo pulp. Yummy!

What is Blik makes adorable wall decals, like these iron vines that HGTV Flickr group member eyesblewgoodbyes used in her living room. All the decals are removable, but only their Re-Stik line can be moved around as much as you’d like; the originals are for one-time use. They also have decals for floors, dishes and even cars and I’m ready to try them all to add a little pizazz to my place. I would probably stick one of these to my forehead in the right situation.

Go mod with do-it-yourself concentric circle wall art. Just paint, peel and stick these circles on the wall and voila — custom artwork! You can find these wooden circles at Chiasso ($48 for set of eight), or use slices of PVC pipe to create a similar look.
For wall art you can move whenever the mood strikes you, I love these classy wall hangings from Kenneth Wingard. With these prominent patterns in your home, no one will be looking at the wall color underneath!
