Make Mine Melamine (Dinnerware)

Hello, my name is Caren, and I admit to dining on melamine plates… by choice!

Luckily, melamine is no longer seen as cheap, even though it is budget-friendly. Melamine is a mainstay for picnics and parties, but I’ve always thought of melamine first as an insurance policy; I drop things — a lot — in the kitchen. And it’s way more eco-friendly than paper plates.

My fellow decorating editor, Chelsey, and I are obsessed with the pretty patterns popping up on melamine dinnerware and couldn’t wait to share them with you. Perfect timing to stock up, considering holiday season is now upon us!

  1. You’re not alone! I suffer from a related disease – namely one that attracts me to all types of melamine…

  2. Melamine! Not just for those outdated “Eurostyle” cabinets any longer! This is a Great selection shown here – they work on so many levels — they mix up a dinner party with each plate being as individual as the guests, they’re child friendly, picnic friendly….the possibilities are endless. While china , even mismatched sets, still get our vote for a special adult occasion, these are definitely a fun and fashionable alternative to the gauche set of harvest gold correll dinnerware one may have inherited from grandma…

  4. I was lucky enough to find my everyday stoneware dishes in a matching melamine set. Now, the kids can have the “same” dishes as the adults, and they love it! Mom loves it too! Melamine rocks!

  8. I love melamine too – especially with 6 kids. I have been reading alot recently about FDA recycling codes and environmentally friendly plastics. Do you know how melamine fits into this? And what is the difference between melamine and melacore? Thanks so much!!!

  9. Does anyone know where Vern Yip got the melamine plates used on a Deserving Design episode? They had a beautiful blue and white pattern. Thanks!
