Some of the programs I enjoy most on HGTV are the specials. We’ve featured really expensive homes, really extreme homes and really beautiful homes. One of the homes that falls in the last category is that of designer Michael Smith for his Montecito weekend residence. Featured on HGTV’s Top 10 Most Beautiful Homes, the Montecito home took five trips to Portugal to complete. No, they didn’t take a vacation — they were hunting down the very best materials for the Mission-turned-Portuguese manor.
One of the companies Smith turned to for reproduction tiles was Lascaux Tile Company. Lascaux offers custom tile to the trade, specializing in antique reproduction. The tiles are so gorgeous, it makes you wonder why we spend so much time designing things anew when there’s so much beauty in history.

Lenore custom made the second tile on the top row using colors I specifically choose according to my clients design scheme for two bathroom backsplashes. She was able to “get the colors right” on the first sample and ship without any problems. My client and I are extremely delighted with the result. The tiles are so unique and add such character to the small space.
Tthe reproduction tiles are beautiful. Remember, if you can’t afford a whole backsplash done in the tiles you can always accent behind the stove and use a cheaper tile elsewhere. In addition, you can always use the reproduction tiles as accents such as insets of diamonds. I have just finished production of reproduction tiles for Lenore. She paid the deposit although it was short by around $420.00 and now I am waiting for a check before I ship the tiles. She keeps telling me the funds are on there way. I will not ship the tiles until her check is cleared. I am shocked at all the complaints I am reading.
