The first Broadway play I ever saw was Proof by David Auburn (it was later turned into a movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Jake Gyllenhaal). Admittedly I loved the stage play more than the movie not just because of the way the play unfolded but because all the action took place on a back porch.
Don’t you just love the idea of a porch – sitting outside watching the world go by with the perfect snack and beverage on hand? Waving to those who pass by while swaying on a swing or a rocking chair? Okay maybe my imagination is getting away from me since this is the time of year when I forget what it’s like to be warm and start wondering if summer will ever return (happily it always does).
When that happens I think of porches and one of my favorite places to start is the book On the Porch: Creating Your Place to Watch the World Go By written by James M. Crisp and Sandra L. Mahoney. The photos are gorgeous, the descriptions interesting and the idea divine. I really do love a porch.
There are some amazing examples of porches straight from my dreams on Rate My Space.
My porch essentials include a comfy chair (perfect for naps), a rocking chair or a swing and a table big enough to hold snacks and drinks. What are your porch essentials?

i have watched hgtv from the begining it takes me away from all the news and sadness in this world i am 68 still work full time to make ends meet i love creating although i can only do so much. i would give anything to have my popcorn ceilings removed . can you help??? i dont know if this is the right site too do this…i love hgtv!!!!
Now I’m dreaming of new porch cushions and flowers in terra cotta pots. Spring, where are you?!
As an artist, I have always loved the idea of having a porch to get away to free the mind and get some fresh air. And being from the south, I have always loved the screened porch (we have to have them screened otherwise you would be eaten alive by mosquitos!!) I can’t image a house without one, or two! My grandparents house had 3, no really. A front porch with the concrete painted that metal gray, a small, side screened porch just off the living room, and a back screened porch looking over the back yard, just big enough for 2 large rocking chairs and I have wonderful memories sitting there, rocking away with my grandmother. A Porch would be an absolute must-have for the house I buy!!
oh, by the way, I have that book ‘On the Porch’. When I saw it I just had to have it! It has some wonderful photographs to dream on! I think HGTV could come up with a show just all about porches, ya know, the different kinds of porches, different styles for different people and different life styles, architectural styles, etc. I would watch a show about Porches!! Hey, that’s not a bad idea is it? Hey HGTV, are you reading this stuff??
LOVE LOVE LOVE Those porches! I live in a city, so I cant really have a porch but the idea of sitting on a rocking chair, looking out on my yard from my big wrap around porch…WHAT A DREAM!
Interesting blog, i have bookmarked it for future referrence.
Greetings from Tim.
